Like Atkins and The Zone Diet, the South Beach Diet also focuses on controlling insulin levels for effective weight loss. The South Beach Diet was created by cardiologist Dr. Agatson in the early 90s as a response to the low-fat, high-carb diet proposed by the American Heart Association. Research he conducted found that low-fat diets were not at all effective in the long run when large amounts of carbohydrates were consumed.
