Romney Camp Hits Back at Criticism Regarding Abortion Stance
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is under fire again, this time in regards to comments he made on Tuesday to the Des Moines Register's editorial board regarding abortion. Romney told the board that there was "no legislation with regards to abortion that I'm familiar with that would become part of my agenda."
On Wednesday, Stephanie Cutter, a deputy campaign manager for President Barack Obama, charged that Romney was attempting to "soften his image" with his remarks in an attempt to court women voters. Romney's campaign dismissed the criticism later that day, and alleged that Obama was trying to turn the conversation away from his record, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Here is some of the key information to emerge regarding Romney's remarks to the Des Moines Register about abortion and abortion legislation.
* Romney stated in the Des Moines Register interview that as president he would issue an executive order to revive a U.S. policy that was previously in place, known as the "Mexico City" policy, that prevented money that the government gives other nations in foreign aid from being used to fund abortions in those nations.
* Romney also reiterated his stance on abortion in general, stating that he was against it unless the situation involved a case of rape, incest, or a threat to the mother's life.
* Romney did not say at the time what he would do if presented with anti-abortion legislation, a question that spokeswoman Andrea Saul sought to put to rest late Tuesday. Saul told the Associated Press and other media outlets that "Gov. Romney would of course support legislation aimed at providing greater protections for life," and that he "will be a pro-life president."
* Obama campaign spokeswoman Lis Smith issued a statement on Tuesday in which she said that it was "troubling" that Romney is "willing to play politics with such important issues," and that "women simply can't trust him," as quoted by Politico.
* Cutter herself issued further statements on Wednesday, in which she maintained that Romney was "trying to cynically and dishonestly hide his true positions" on issues, including his stance on abortion, as quoted by NBC News.
