Three youths to be charged after fatal soccer attack ? Sports ...

THE HAGUE, Netherlands ? Richard Nieuwenhuizen was doing what he loved: watching his son play soccer and volunteering as a linesman.

On Monday, the 41-year-old father?s passion for the sport cost him his life.

Prosecutors announced Tuesday they are charging three players, two 15-year-olds and a 16-year-old, in the attack on Nieuwenhuizen after a youth match between local clubs ? Buitenboys and Nieuw Sloten.

The players, whose identities have not been released, are to be charged with manslaughter, assault and public violence. They will be arraigned Thursday at a closed hearing.

Prosecutors have released no details of a possible motive, and Buitenboys club chairman Marcel Oost said the reason for the attack was not certain.

?We still don?t have a clear picture yet,? prosecution spokeswoman Brigit Haan told The Associated Press.

The deadly assault sent shock waves through the Netherlands, a country where soccer is king. The sports minister, soccer federation and coach of the nation?s most storied club, Ajax, expressed disbelief.

The Royal Netherlands Football Association on Tuesday said it was canceling all amateur soccer games this weekend as a mark of respect for Nieuwenhuizen. Professional matches will proceed, but players and officials will wear black armbands and observe a minute?s silence before kickoff.

The attack hit at one of the foundations of Dutch youth sport ? the participation of parents.

?It is unbelievable that something like this could happen on a football pitch,? said Bert van Oostveen, the association?s director of professional soccer. ?These are the volunteers on which our sport is built. Without them we cannot go on.?

On any given weekend, at thousands of games across the Netherlands, parents are the engine powering youth soccer. They volunteer for everything from brewing tea to marking out lines on fields and wielding whistles and flags as referees and linesmen.

In the overwhelming majority of matches, players and parents enjoy the game and then have a drink together in the clubhouse.

But sometimes frustrations boil over into violence after the final whistle.

Amsterdam alderman Eric van der Burg, whose responsibilities in the city cover sports, said the team from Nieuw Sloten had been in trouble twice before, once for verbally abusing a referee and once when a player fought with a spectator. The player involved in the fight was suspended by the club, Van der Burg told the AP in an email.

He said the city already has an agreement from four-time European champion Ajax at the top all the way down to small local clubs to prevent aggression on and around fields.

?It?s important that parents but also the professional players give good examples how to behave,? Van der Burg said. ?Sports should be fun.?

FIFA President Sepp Blatter weighed in on the national debate about how such an attack could happen.

?Football is a mirror of society and sadly, the same ills that afflict society ? in this case violence ? also manifest themselves in our game,? Blatter said Tuesday in a statement. ?Nevertheless, I remain convinced that football ? through the example set by the tireless efforts of people like Mr. Nieuwenhuizen ? is a force for good, and we must continue to use its positive example to educate people against these wrongs.?

Prosecutors say a group of Nieuw Sloten players surrounded Nieuwenhuizen after the match Sunday, kicking and punching him.

Nieuwenhuizen initially appeared to have recovered from the assault at the club whose fields are squeezed into an industrial neighborhood of Almere, a fast-growing commuter city just outside Amsterdam. He went home and lay down, but returned later to watch another game. It was then that he collapsed and was rushed to the hospital.

A day later, with his family surrounding his hospital bed, he died.

A few hours later, decorations marking Wednesday?s St. Nicholas day ? a national celebration similar to Christmas ? were still hanging at the Buitenboys clubhouse as team members wept and consoled one another.

Nieuw Sloten immediately banned the players involved and scrapped their team from the league as well as canceling all matches for the coming weekend.

As a wave of grief swept over the soccer community, another Amsterdam club, TOS-Actief, said on its website it was canceling all matches for the weekend.

?By doing this, TOS-Actief is taking a clear stance against excesses in football,? the club said. ?We say stop violence on and around the pitch.?

Van der Burg proposed calling off all amateur matches nationwide for the weekend.

A delegation from the Royal Netherlands Football Association visited Buitenboys on Tuesday to discuss a ?fitting way to pay tribute? to Nieuwenhuizen and express support for the club.

Nieuwenhuizen?s death came almost exactly a year after a Dutch amateur soccer player fatally kicked a 77-year-old fan following a match.

Amsterdam District Court last week sentenced the player, identified only as Silvester M. in line with Dutch privacy law, to three years in prison for kicking the fan so hard in the chest his spleen ruptured. He died of his injuries a month later.

Signal Mountain Considers Lifting Ban On Rock Climbing

Twenty years after a spate of climbing accidents led Signal Mountain officials to prohibit rock climbing in the community, aficionados of the sport are asking that the ban be rescinded.

?The town is rightly proud that its residents enjoy extensive opportunities for outdoor recreation,? climbers Britt Reynolds and Michael Worzel said in a letter requesting the change, ?yet one of those opportunities is singled out and prohibited. We propose that the town remove (the 1992 ordinance prohibiting rock climbing) from the town statutes, or create a new ordinance that reverses it.?

A similar request was made in 2009, at which time council members voted to continue the prohibition.

Friday, during its regular monthly work session, the council held a lengthy discussion with Mr. Reynolds and Mr. Worzel about possible impacts of lifting the ban.

The two enthusiasts cited a number of reasons in favor of the change, including:

? Rock climbing offers health and economic benefits to the community of Signal Mountain . . . Given the proven mainstream nature of rock climbing, it is now counter-intuitive and misplaced for the town to prohibit the safe and healthy use of this resource.

? Rock climbing is safer than hiking, and rock climbing injuries are rare. Thus, the town?s emergency and safety departments will not be unduly burdened or overextended in responding to climbing injuries or emergencies.

? The town is legally protected from any potential liability of a climbing-related injury by the Tennessee Recreational Use Statute.

? The town?s parks and recreation department will not be unduly burdened by climbing management, or by costs and labor associated with trails and infrastructure . . . The SCC pledges to be a partner in climbing management in Signal Mountain, and can offer considerable resources in the way of funding, volunteers and stewardship. SCC volunteers put in thousands of hours of work each year . . . In addition, trash pickup, tree plantings, invasive species removal, vegetation management . . . and general and/or necessary conservation work are done in relationship with land managers who allow climbing.

Mr. Reynolds, a Signal Mountain resident, said many people either are unaware of or ignore the current ban and go rock climbing inside the town anyway. He chooses not to do that, he added, because he wants to be able to climb ? legally ? with his children.

Mr. Worzel, who serves as executive director of the Southeastern Climbing Coalition, noted that climbing is one of the fastest growing sports in the nation and counts more than a few Signal Mountain residents among its enthusiasts.

?Many local towns and municipal areas across the country allow rock climbing,? he and Mr. Reynolds noted in their letter. ?From Lookout Mountain, Tennessee to Boulder, Colorado . . . climbing is recognized for its health and economic benefits. . . . We hope that you see how the benefits of climbing for residents and visitors significantly outweigh the costs, and we hope you will consider removing the ordinance which bans rock climbing in this great town.?

COMCOM-SI-OppNets 2013 : Elsevier - Computer Communications ...

The widespread availability of mobile portable devices enriched with a variety of sensing capabilities, coupled with the impelling need of communication anytime and anywhere, has rapidly raised the interest towards new approaches to communications between users. Opportunistic networks are an instance of the delay tolerant paradigm applied to networks made up of users' portable devices (such as smartphones and tablets). As such, they are able to cope with challenged network conditions that are often present in real life, such as high node mobility, variable connectivity, and disconnections, which would impair communications in traditional Mobile Ad Hoc Networks. In this scenario, user mobility becomes one of the main drivers to enable message delivery. In fact, according to the store-carry-and-forward paradigm, user devices store messages and carry them around while they move in the network, exchanging them upon encounter with other nodes, and eventually delivering them to their destination or to interested users. This new communication paradigm enables legacy applications in challenged scenarios, as well as it paves the way to innovative solutions. While opportunistic networks initially received attention to support communication where an infrastructure is not available (for disaster recovery or in rural areas), nowadays a number of applications can be envisaged ranging from content sharing, through mobile social networking, to participatory and urban sensing. All these applications rely on data forwarding amongst devices. As a consequence, two aspects become relevant, that is, the need for mechanisms guaranteeing trusted and secure communications while preserving users' privacy (in the absence of infrastructure and sometimes even end-to-end connectivity), and incentive mechanisms able to boost the participation in the network.

This Special Issue of Computer Communications seeks contributions pushing the state of the art in Opportunistic Networking. Topics of interest include (but are not limited to) the following:

- Mobility measurements and models, mobility trace analysis
- Measurements, models, and analysis for user behaviors on mobile devices
- Unicast and multicast routing
- Transport, congestion control, and reliability issues
- Content dissemination, content caching, service composition, opportunistic computing
- Trust, security & privacy in opportunistic forwarding, incentive mechanisms, reputation systems, and key management
- Application support and middleware for opportunistic networks
- New applications and services relying on opportunistic networking
- Systems and experience for real-world deployments

(AP) ? As investigators search for a motive to help explain why Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher killed his girlfriend and then himself, a discordant picture of the couple began to emerge.

Belcher and his girlfriend, 22-year-old Kasandra M. Perkins, had lived apart briefly earlier in the year but had gotten back together by Thanksgiving, according to a friend of Perkins.

Brianne York, 21, said Sunday the couple, who had a 3-month-old daughter, Zoey, argued about "normal couple stuff" but that her friend was "really happy about being a mom."

When she learned Saturday that Belcher had fatally shot Perkins at the couples' home, York said, she thought someone must have been mistaken.

Afterward, Belcher drove about five miles to Arrowhead Stadium, where he thanked general manager Scott Pioli and coach Romeo Crennel for all they'd done for him. Belcher then fatally shot himself in the practice facility's parking lot, police said.

Sunday found Crennel on the sidelines, bravely holding together a team in turmoil. The Chiefs rallied to a 27-21 victory over the Carolina Panthers, breaking an eight-game losing streak.

"It was tough," said quarterback Brady Quinn. "It was an eerie feeling after a win, because you don't think you can really win in this situation."

York, who met Perkins while taking classes at the Blue River campus of Metropolitan Community College, said the women bonded during their pregnancies. York has a baby boy who was born months before Perkins gave birth to Zoey.

"It doesn't seem that that would be the end of their story," York said. "It just seems like if things didn't work out, they would have gone their separate ways. I would never have thought that this would be how it ended."

York said that sometime after Halloween Perkins had gone to visit her family in Texas. Perkins also briefly stayed with her cousin, who is married to Chiefs player Jamaal Charles. Belcher and Perkins met through Charles, York said.

A message left for Charles and his wife through an assistant was not immediately returned.

York said the root of the argument was that Belcher, "sometimes he would just be down in his man cave or whatever," and Perkins wanted to spend more time together as a family.

"They ended up wanting to try to work it out," York said, "and the next time I went over and visited she told me everything was good and things were better, so I thought everything was fine."

Kansas City police spokesman Darin Snapp reiterated Sunday that the couple had argued recently but he could provide no additional details.

At the couple's former home, people could be seen coming and going Sunday. "Can you all respect grieving?" said a man who answered the door at the couple's home. A short time later, at the same time the Chiefs were playing, two men loaded bags into a car, and two women drove away.

Attempts to reach various members of Perkins' family in Austin, Texas, were unsuccessful.

Neighbors in the newly built Kansas City subdivision where the couple had lived since April were stunned by Saturday's violent events.

Kristen VanMeter, 31, lives near the couple and said also she had taken community-college courses with Perkins. VanMeter said the couple threw "a lot of parties" but said she heard nothing unusual the morning of the killing.

"It's a surprise," she said. "There had to of been something that triggered it."

Belcher's mother, who was staying with the couple, called 911 after her son shot Perkins. Snapp said 911 tapes are not public records in Missouri.

Shawn Martin, vice president of the neighborhood homeowners association, said she wasn't aware of any problems that preceded the shooting.

She described the parties at the home Belcher and Perkins shared as "nothing more than any other young couple" would have.

After having the baby, Perkins was taking the fall semester off school. York said Perkins planned to return in January and wanted to become a teacher.

Police said Belcher's mother was living with the couple, but York said she just made frequent visits, sometimes lasting a couple weeks at a time. She doesn't know who will care for the baby now.

"They just seemed really happy around each other, and I just don't understand where things went wrong," York said.

York said the only other stress Perkins mentioned was whether Belcher would stay with the Chiefs.

"She was a really good person to be around and a lot of fun," York said. "She was somebody you could call when you were down and she would talk you through it. She would lift you back up and make you feel happy again if you were sad or upset."

What we'll be watching tonight: Rubio and Ryan both address Jack Kemp foundation.

Bush Calls for 'Benevolent Spirit' in Immigration Reform - Univision's Emily Deruy reports - Former President George W. Bush called on lawmakers to tackle immigration reform with a "benevolent spirit" during a conference on immigration and economic growth Tuesday morning. The conference was intended to spotlight immigrants who have contributed meaningfully to the economic growth and culture of the country. "Immigrants come with new skills and new ideas," Bush said. "They fill a critical gap in the labor market." http://abcn.ws/QFz3z2

Daily Cliff Dive - Devin Dwyer wrapped all the cliff news. The lede is President Obama's interview earlier with Blooomberg, where he again insisted rates on the top 2 percent must go up. But he said he sees "potential" for averting the "fiscal cliff."

"We're going to have to see the rates on the top 2 percent go up and we're not going to be able to get a deal without it," Obama told Bloomberg TV in his first televised interview since the Nov. 6 election.

He argued the two sides are talking.

"Speaker Boehner and I speak frequently," he said. "I don't think the issue right now has to do with sitting in a room."

"Unfortunately, the speaker's proposal right now is still out of balance," Obama added, referring to the GOP plan unveiled Monday that would extend all income tax rates at current levels while imposing changes to Medicare and Social Security.

The full wrap is here - http://abcn.ws/Ud1wZ1

McConnell Won't Endorse Boehner Counter-Offer - Sunlen Miller Reports: Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-KY., would not say definitively if he supports Speaker of the House John Boehner's proposal to avoid the fiscal cliff.

"It's important that the House Republican leadership is trying to move the process forward," McConnell said today following his party's weekly caucus lunch, "Frankly I had hoped we would be accomplishing more in the real talks that are going on privately. But I can tell you being aware of those, there's nothing going on privately that's not going on publically."

Tapper Points Out - President Obama during LAST YEAR's budget stand-off said: "What we said was give us $1.2 trillion in additional revenues, which could be accomplished without hiking taxes - tax rates, but could simply be accomplished by eliminating loopholes, eliminating some deductions and engaging in a tax reform process that could have lowered rates generally while broadening the base." ( Remarks, 7/22/11)

Today, however, he says the math doesn't work and the rates need to be raised.

Tapper asked this of Jay Carney today - Just a second ago you referred to - when talking about - how the debt ceiling, taking it off the table needs to be part of this deal, you referred to the economy being held hostage by an ideological few. You're aware that when he was a senator, President Obama voted against raising the debt ceiling? Answer here - http://abcn.ws/UEssW0

The Senate and Susan Rice and Angry Mobs in Benghazi - Jon Karl has this pop quiz: Who said this about the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, shortly after it happened? "The violence in Benghazi coincided with an attack on the United States Embassy in Cairo, Egypt, which was also swarmed by an angry mob of protestors on September 11, 2012." Was it U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice? No, it was the United States Senate. The Senate passed a resolution the day after the attack in Benghazi, on Sept. 12, S. Res. 551. The resolution was updated and passed again Sept. 22 to add the names of those who had died. The original resolution and the update were approved by "Unanimous Consent," meaning that all 100 senators were officially listed as sponsors or co-sponsors. Neither resolution uses the words "terrorist" or "extremist" or "al-Qaeda." Both resolutions use the phrase "swarmed by an angry mob of protestors" to describe the attacks in Cairo and Benghazi. http://abcn.ws/YvQp61 White House Changes Tune on Puerto Rico - Univision's Jordan Fabian reports - The White House said Tuesday that a majority of Puerto Ricans backed statehood on a November ballot referendum on the island's political status, a change from its suggestion Monday that the result of the vote was unclear. "To clarify, the results were clear, the people of Puerto Rico want the issue of status resolved, and majority chose statehood in the second question," White House spokesman Luis Miranda said in a statement. "Now it is time for Congress to act and the administration will work with them on that effort, so that the people of Puerto Rico can determine their own future." http://abcn.ws/Svs1vc

The Back-Room Deal that Almost Produced Candidate Petraeus - Greg Krieg reports: David Petraeus running for president, with Fox News chief Roger Ailes as his campaign manager and News Corporation boss Rupert Murdoch "bankrolling" the whole operation. That, as first reported in today's Washington Post story by Bob Woodward, was the broad strokes of an offer delivered by a Fox News contributor, on Ailes' behalf, during a meeting with the future, and now former, CIA director in the spring of 2011. The messenger was Kathleen T. McFarland, a Reagan administration veteran now on the Fox News payroll. She told Petraeus that the proposal came straight from Ailes' desk. Petraeus was uncomfortable from the start, clearly anxious about their discussion going public. He asked McFarland to confirm that their conversation was off the record and asked if anyone else was present when Ailes communicated his plan. She is heard on the tape confirming that it's all hush-hush. http://abcn.ws/YM5Cia

The Syria 'Red Line' - "We have made our views very clear. This is a red line for the United States. I'm not going to telegraph in any specifics what we would do in the event of credible evidence that the Assad regime has resorted to using chemical weapons against his own people, but suffice to say we are certainly planning to take action if that eventuality were to occur," Clinton said at a press conference in Prague. A U.S. official confirmed to ABC News that late last week U.S. intelligence determined that Syria, in addition to moving some of its chemical stockpiles, had taken preparatory steps with regards to some of the stockpile. http://abcn.ws/SDVq7P (Parnass and Hughes and Martinez)

Advertising Your Marketing Ideas And Earning Big Money | Effective ...

Article marketing can help just about any type of business, no matter what size. Even businesses that aren?t actually online are benefiting from the process of article marketing. If you wish to start utilizing this kind of marketing for your company, but aren?t sure where you can start, the tips that follow are going to get you pointed in the right direction.

When writing articles, make them simple and well-written. Keep them on subjects that a wide audience will find interesting. No one wants to read content that has been rehashed time and time again.

You want to reach a large audience. You don?t have to aim for a large group of readers to be successful. It?s much better to have thousands of customers that are interested than millions that aren?t. Always cater to the group that you have previously identified as being your target.

Make sure that your headlines grasp your readers attention immediately, but don?t go overboard. Using bombastic titles that promise the moon will make people distrust you. Give real value and try using some numbers in your titles, like ?Ten big ideas to help?? This works every time.

Only write in the language you are fluent in. Unless you can fluently write in a second language, do not try to market to those who speak another language. You could be missing on many of the subtle intricacies of the language that only natives may know. Besides, each culture reacts differently to marketing techniques and what works with an English-speaking audience might not convey a positive image of your business to another audience.

Keep your readership happy. Be open to researching new arenas so you can develop articles in fields of special interest to your readers. If you can bring in readers, you will be successful.

Try using tools to boost visibility. You could, for instance, send your articles to different article directories. Some tools are fee-based, though certain ones are free. Hunt these down for an inexpensive way to gain readers.

Make sure to entertain readers by showing your personality. This can be done in many ways. For instance, you could write about your goals, share a journey you are on like losing weight, share an opinion, or share experiences you have went through. This personal touch can make you more relatable to readers.

Submit your articles after they have already been posted on your website and indexed by the search engines. Doing so ensures that the original article is visible on search engine results pages. At the same time, older articles will continue to generate back-end traffic.

Always remember that nobody is perfect, not even you. Nobody?s perfect. Learn from your mistakes and use them to create better articles and better overall writing. Use mistakes to inspire articles when you can. This lets your readers learn from your mistakes, so they don?t make the same ones.

Come up with your very own logo! It is a common misconception that easily recognized logos are the exclusive domain of large companies. Frequent visitors to your site will begin to recognize your logo, and trust the symbol. A logo is great to use for all types of consumers, even when using article marketing.

When seeking information from many sources on article marketing, make sure to save a copy somewhere of any post, e-mail reply, or comment that you write. You can later use this information in your articles. This is called ?PLR? or ?Private Label Rights.? This information is easy to add to your articles.

You will find within no time that article marketing can be quite a tool online. More people will view your site, and you can also get the word out about things that you are interested in. Writing it yourself or hiring someone to do it, whichever you use, you will find this article?s advice will help you do it successfully.

Google employee hints at Key Lime Pie as the future of Android

In case you haven?t caught on yet, the different versions of the Android operating system are named?in alphabetical order after desserts. So far there has been Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean. It has been previously rumored that Google (GOOG) is planning on calling its next software version Key Lime Pie, however there had been no evidence to back this claim. Manu Cornet, a cartoonist and Google software engineer, on Monday shared an image on his Google+ page that?demonstrates?the evolution of the Android operating system.

The clever image highlights various stages in Android?s life cycle, from its rocky beginnings to the force it has become today.?The most recent stage in the platform?s evolution shows the Android robot eating none other than a piece of key lime pie. Cornet notes that the image was ?just for fun? and there isn?t much to ?read into,? although he welcomed interpretations.
