Skating: an often overlooked Breck activity | Breck Connection

I entertain two winter loves: skiing and ice skating. Breckenridge Ski Resort attracts a ton of skiers and riders, but I can?t help but notice how few people ice skate, relatively speaking.

When I was a competitive ice skater in Chicago, I daydreamed of being the only skater on a clean sheet of ice for more than 2 or so minutes; my perfect imagined date involved my boyfriend surprising me by renting out our local rink for a half hour ??even if it were at 1 a.m., when rates dropped (never happened). Almost every day, as the Zamboni cleared the ice, I?d rush down the stairs to the rink door, trying to be the first one to step onto the ice (at least 10 other girls had the same desire, so maybe once every two weeks, I?d snag the virgin step). I would cherish those 30 seconds, when I stroked a quarter-way around the rink without anyone else in sight ? until literally 30 other girls swarmed the ice, carving it with jumps and spins.

Kimberly Nicoletti (yeah, that?d be me) skating at one of Stephen C. West Ice Arena?s winter shows.

Breckenridge skating

Here in Breckenridge, I?ve skated my dream without even having to rent the Stephen C. West Ice Arena; while some public skating sessions are rockin? (especially on don?t-miss disco nights ? silver ball and all), other public sessions allow skaters to glide along smooth ice with relatively few people (usually morning sessions?? wait, did I say that? No ? no, go in the evenings when it?s more crowded ? I mean, more ?exciting?).

Skating without crowds is akin to making powder turns through quiet trees ??it?s exhilarating.

Some kids, and adults, get hooked beyond public skating sessions and take either group or private lessons. Then, they practice during ?freestyle sessions? dedicated completely to them. And therein lies another beauty of skating in Breckenridge: A fraction of skaters take the ice at the Stephen C. West Ice Arena, compared to city rinks. It?s not because there?s something wrong with high-elevation ice (though you will get a great cardio workout when you really learn how to skate) or Breck?s rink; it?s simply that with so much winter recreation available, people sometimes overlook the magic of figure skating.

(Of course, hockey still lures guys ? and women ? into the rink, even at ungodly early hours of the morning, but I cannot speak unbiasedly about this breed of skaters. As a figure skater, I had one of those love/hate relationships with hockey players: I ?hated? them, because their sharp blades hacked up ice, but, as a young, TEENAGE skater, I had to admit, most hockey guys were pretty cute ? and they could Skate. I digress, but it?s only to make this point: Hockey tends to be strong at any rink, and Stephen C. West is no different.)

Chelsea Dymond, who learned to skate at Stephen C. West Ice Arena, snagged first at a recent World ISI competition. Photo by Bonnie Kirchoff.

But figure skating?s popularity waxes and wanes. No one educates parents about the valuable life skills skating teaches kids: Most people don?t realize the level of confidence it instills in students as they learn to compete and express themselves in shows; one Denver coach I know (Amy Schneider) says her students possess great public speaking skills because they?ve gained confidence through shows and competitions.

Skating also requires incredible discipline; it takes commitment and hard work to learn edge work, jumps and spins. Beyond emotional and social benefits, skating keeps bodies limber and strong and instills a sense of balance and kinesthesia that lasts a lifetime.

Plus, it?s a blast. Few other sports combine strength, grace, artistry, balance, cardio ability, performance and playfulness like skating does.

Breckenridge?s Ice Show Dec. 15

If you want to see some of the local skaters in action, head over to the rink at 7 p.m. Dec. 15. That evening, the figure skaters at Stephen C. West Ice Arena present their winter ice show, ?Winter Wonderland.?

The 90-minute show features more than 25 skaters, ranging in age from 3 to over 50. The show includes routines by beginners to advanced skaters, and it also showcases the coaches.

A medley of ?Winter Wonderland/Let It Snow? opens the show with a group number. In the end, 15 skaters dressed as penguins dance to a 7-minute medley of ?Happy Feet.? Tickets are $9 for adults and $7 for kids (3 and younger are free).

Sometimes seeing a skating show is all it takes for a kid (or young-at-heart adult) to feel ice skating?s creative sparks.

Breck?s Learn To Skate

Stephen C. West Ice Arena?s Learn-To-Skate program offers group lessons for all ages ? and it?s also where those little-rascal, future hockey players start out.

Local skaters from the Stephen C. West Ice Arena placed at the 2010 World ISI Championships.

The next session starts the week of Jan. 15, with 6 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. classes every Tuesday and 6:45 p.m. classes every Friday. Lessons are $10 a class with advanced registration, or $13.50 for drop ins. Private lessons are also available.

Skating parties

The rink also throws great birthday parties, where the birthday boy or girl and friends get the whole rink to themselves ? along with cake and pizza (yes, I want a 10-year-old birthday party DO OVER).

For more information, call (970) 547-9974. To invite me to an exclusive rink birthday party, email me; I promise I?ll behave myself as a guest and try not to be the first one to step onto the ice.

Loss for overmatched BJ Penn doesn?t take away from career

B.J. Penn will turn 34 on Thursday. The man who is nicknamed "Prodigy" and "Baby Jay" is up against his mid-30s. In his loss to Rory MacDonald, he looked downright ... old.

Gone was the man who frantically paced while waiting to fight Diego Sanchez before the fifth round of their championship bout. The Penn who choked out Kenny Florian and Joe Stevenson and Jens Pulver was nowhere to be found. The "Prodigy" who burst onto the MMA scene in 2001 by with three straight knockout wins was not in the Octagon.

Instead, it was a Penn who looked overmatched and small next to the young and strong MacDonald, who represents the next wave of MMA. Unlike most of the fighters in the UFC, MacDonald didn't start with one discipline -- like wrestling, jiu-jitsu or kickboxing -- and then add in others to try MMA. MacDonald trained in mixed martial arts since he was 14. MacDonald looked like the next big thing. Penn looked like an also-ran.

But this is the way things go in combat sports. Fighters always think they have one more win in them. Heading into Saturday night, Penn was 1-3-1 in his last five bouts. Still, fighters are convinced they're just one good punch away from staging a comeback. Against MacDonald, if that was true, Penn couldn't find that punch.

[Also: Benson Henderson beats up on Nate Diaz, retains lightweight title]

Penn, a legend in MMA whose first fight was at UFC 31 in 2001, had no answers for MacDonald. Penn was wobbled by a left late in the first round. He survived just to take such a beating in the second round that the fight doctor came in between the second and third to check and see if Penn could continue.

In the third round, MacDonald continued to land strikes, but added taunting to his arsenal. He dropped his hands and made faces at Penn, which the crowd in Seattle didn't appreciate. After the bout, MacDonald said he Penn was his hero, but he had to treat him like every opponent.

"Like I said to BJ after the fight, he was the one guy I really really looked up to growing up. He's a hero to me," MacDonald said to UFC commentator Joe Rogan.

During the post-fight press conference, UFC president Dana White said he would like to see Penn retire. After his showing on Saturday night, it's likely White isn't alone in these wishes. While Penn's had a rough showing of late, the disappointing end to his career doesn't take away what he did throughout it. If, like all legends, he fades away, his career will be remembered for the brilliance at its height, not the fizzling at the end.

Tight race in Ghana election as votes are counted

ACCRA, Ghana (AP) ? Preliminary results from Ghana's presidential poll indicate a tight race between President John Dramani Mahama and opposition leader Nana Akufo-Addo.

Results published Sunday by Ghana's electoral body show Akufo-Addo in the lead by about 2 percent, but only 117 out of 275 constituencies had been officially reported by noon on Sunday.

People in Ghana's capital have been glued to their radios since Friday night as local media announce results from polling stations. One private radio station has already predicted a win for Mahama, and people have celebrated in the streets, but official results could be days away.

International observers endorsed Ghana's presidential and parliamentary elections despite delays at polling stations that pushed voting into a second day Saturday.

"All of Africa was looking at Ghana to make sure that they live up to their reputation and their name of being a mature democracy," said Ahmed Issak Hassan, head of an observer mission from the South Africa-based Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa. "I think so far the people of Ghana, the political leadership have lived up to that expectation," said Hassan on Saturday.

"The people of Ghana and the leadership need to be commended," he said in a preliminary assessment of the election. Hassan is also the chairman of Kenya's electoral commission.

On Friday ballot materials arrived hours late to polling stations and many of the biometric voter verification machines broke down, causing long delays.

Electoral chairman Kwadwo Afari-Gyan said no incidents of fraud or violence have been confirmed. Yet rumors of misconduct have been rife.

Police fired water cannons and tear gas on hundreds of opposition party supporters Saturday who were protesting outside a building in northern Accra where they suspected ballots from the presidential and parliamentary election were being counted by a private company.

"They had some young supporters of political parties demanding to know what was going on in a particular house," said Ghana police spokesman Arthur Cephas. "Police came in to restore order. We brought all our management to get youth off the facility, to calm them down."

An AP reporter at the scene heard warning shots fired by police at the crowd.

Cephas said no one was arrested and there were no injuries.

The accusations of improper vote counting were unfounded, said electoral commission spokesman Christian Owusu-Parry. "The electoral commission receives the results directly from the polling stations. The ballot boxes go from the regional offices to the headquarters; there are no intermediaries," said Owusu-Parry.

This nation of 25 million is deeply attached to its tradition of democracy, and voters were urging each other to remain calm while they waited their turn to choose from one of eight presidential contenders.

Ghana was once a troubled nation that suffered five coups and decades of stagnation, before turning a corner in the 1990s. It is now a pacesetter for the continent's efforts to become democratic. No other West African country has had so many elections deemed free and fair, a reputation that voters hold close to their hearts.

The incumbent Mahama, a former vice president, was catapulted into office in July after the unexpected death of President John Atta Mills. Before becoming vice president in 2009, the 54-year-old Mahama served as a minister and a member of parliament. He's also written an acclaimed biography, recalling Ghana's troubled past, called "My First Coup d'Etat."

Akufo-Addo is a former foreign minister and the son of one of Ghana's previous presidents. In 2008, Akufo-Addo lost the last presidential election to Mills by less than 1 percent during a runoff vote. Both candidates are trying to make the case that they will use the nation's oil riches to help the poor.

Besides being one of the few established democracies in the region, Ghana also has the fastest-growing economy. Oil was discovered in 2007 and the country began producing it in December 2010. But a deep divide still exists between those benefiting from the country's oil, cocoa and mineral wealth and those left behind financially.

SEC wrestles with Internet age in Netflix case

10 hrs.

A U.S. regulatory probe of Netflix over disclosures made on its chief executive's Facebook page could prove an important test of whether a rule designed to prevent leaks to analysts can translate to the social media age.?

The movie and TV streaming service revealed on Thursday that it may face action from the Securities and Exchange Commission if the agency determines the comments from CEO Reed Hastings violate a rule that requires information to be disclosed to investors at the same time.?

Hastings' Facebook page had more than 200,000 subscribers, including reporters and analysts, when he told them on July 3 that the company had hit 1 billion hours viewed in June.?

But the case may not hinge on whether or not his page qualifies as a public dissemination.?

Instead, it may come down to two other issues.?

One, whether the information was material to investors.?

And two, if it was material, whether investors knew that Hastings' Facebook page was a venue to release important company news.?

As evidence of materiality, the SEC could point to statements Hastings made earlier in the year highlighting milestones, including hours streamed, as metrics investors should watch.?

But the company contends the July 3 comments were not material. It says that the company posted a blog entry a few weeks earlier that said the company was approaching that milestone.?

Also, Netflix General Counsel David Hyman testified before a U.S. House of Representatives committee on June 27, and said at the beginning of his testimony that Netflix "delivers close to a billion hours of streaming movies and TV shows to its consumers every month."?

Such prior disclosure could hurt any SEC case. "Whether what he said is materially different from what the company has already disseminated, that may be a real challenge for the commission to maintain that position in court," said former SEC lawyer Eugene Goldman who is now with McDermott Will & Emery.?

But movements of the company's stock price could bolster an SEC case if the agency can prove the stock jumped on the news. Netflix attributed the jump in its stock price to a positive analyst report released the night prior to Hastings' Facebook post.?

The stock closed at $67.85 on July 2, and opened one percent higher the next day at $68.49, on a positive report from Citigroup.?

The stock closed at $72.04 on July 3, a six percent jump that would be unusual from an analyst report alone.?

The second issue of whether Hastings' Facebook page was a known source of material company news goes to the heart of whether the SEC's rules - and its interpretation of them - are outdated.?

SEC adopted the rule at issue, Regulation Fair Disclosure, or Reg FD, in 2000 over concerns that companies were meeting with small groups of analysts or institutional investors and disclosing material information to them.?

The concern was that "shortly after these types of meetings, trading would take place on the basis of such information," Goldman said. "This seems a lot different from that."?

The new potential action raises questions about whether the rule was designed to address disclosures like the one made by Hastings.?

"There's a huge divide between CEOs living in the real world and the financial industry, which lives behind regulatory walls. Reg FD is built for the old way of communicating from behind these walls," said Howard Lindzon, a hedge fund manager and founder and CEO of StockTwits, a social network for traders and investors to share real-time ideas and information about stocks.?

Reg FD does not delve into the use of social media for disclosing information to investors. But the SEC issued guidance on the subject in August 2008.?

That guidance states that companies can use websites to disclose information as long as they are a "recognized channel of distribution."?

To determine that threshold, the SEC lists factors companies should weigh, including whether their site is "posted and accessible" and also whether "the company has made investors and the markets aware that it will post important information" on the website.?

Netflix may have hurt itself on this point, if the SEC is able to prove that the information was material.?

Hastings acknowledged in a blog posting on Thursday that the company does not "use Facebook and other social media to get material information to investors."?

The SEC is likely to home in on that comment as it continues its case against the company.?

But Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla Motors who has posted company-related developments on his Twitter feed, said it is hard to believe that the SEC could consider a CEO's Facebook post to be a narrow release. He noted that reporters regularly follow companies' and executives' social media posts.?

"To consider a press release to be a more public venue than a Facebook or Twitter account where someone is followed by hundreds of thousands of people, including the press themselves, is simply untrue," Musk said in an email.?

St. Nick The Grinch: Nasty Santa Fired From Mall After Parents Complained On Facebook

video

Turns out, everyone?s susceptible to the holiday blues: a mall Santa was fired in Maine for being a downright grinch. Parents complained and fa-la-la-la-la, he lost his job.

Taking to Facebook, the angry parents voiced their irritation with the Scrooge Santa. The mother of 6-year-old Chantel Mailhiot told WGME 13 that the Santa wouldn?t allow her daughter to sit on his lap simply because she didn?t purchase a $20 photo package. Apparently, though, it gets worse: even after little Chantel told Santa she wanted an American girl doll, he told her that instead, she?d get an ?American football.?

After Chantel?s mom went on Facebook to lodge her complaint, she found a sea of complaints from other parents regarding the callous Santa, as well. Janelle Bavota wrote, ?The Santa here is extremely rude, abrupt, and has no holiday spirit whatsoever. I was very disappointed.? Others complained of ?dirty looks? from the Santa to their children.

Another mom, Ka Judice, said,

?We had the same experience today. He made my 11 year old son cry [sic] ? basically told him he was being greedy ? my son who has neurological problems and very much believes was so confused!!! I don?t know what to do now. If I take him to a new Santa elsewhere my kids might notice the difference. They have always believed the mall had the real Santa.?

Apparently, bad Santa?s predecessor was better: Vanadu Van commented, ?You should have the Santa you have had in years past! He is a great Santa and I really enjoyed him. He?s great with the kids! You can tell he really loves what he does and passes the true spirit and joy of Christmas along.?

The Maine Mall responded to the complaints, telling customers they had fired the bad Santa and cleared up mall policy:

?We expect Santa to treat all children equally, always have. There are no codes, slanted policies, or exceptions. This is something we have been crystal clear about with Santa every year. ANY person (kids, teens, adults? even pets on Monday nights!) can sit on his lap, talk to him, get a candy cane or whatever souvenir he?s handing out if he hasn?t run out that day (which can happen). ALL, whether you buy pictures or not. It?s an OPTION, not a requirement, to buy photography packages. Many parents? issues result when they take out their cell phone to snap a quick shot, ignoring the posted ?No personal photography signs.??

The mall also told customers to speak up about any problems they face, saying, ?We encourage families to call us personally when there are issues so that we can relay the stories to the staff involved, insist on changes when possible, and continue improving the percentage of families who are happy.?

The Santa was unavailable for comment.
