Susan Rice Withdrawal: How Obama's Likely Secretary Of State Pick Fell Apart

WASHINGTON -- In a phone call with the president on Thursday, U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice formally withdrew her name from consideration as the next Secretary of State, putting an abrupt end to a political drama that had unfolded on the Senate floor and television airwaves for months.

Rice made her decision, administration officials told The Huffington Post, "during the last couple days," after considering the heated battle that would have ensued had she been tapped to replace departing Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

?If nominated, I am now convinced that the confirmation process would be lengthy, disruptive and costly ? to you and to our most pressing national and international priorities,? Rice wrote in her letter to President Barack Obama. ?That trade-off is simply not worth it to our country.?

?Her decision demonstrates the strength of her character, and an admirable commitment to rise above the politics of the moment to put our national interests first,? the president said in a statement shortly thereafter. He will meet with Rice in person on Friday.

For all the high-minded niceties offered publicly, a genuine frustration could be felt below the surface. Not just from Rice's defenders, who had spent weeks yearning for the White House to push back more forcefully against her critics, or from Democrats, who wanted Obama to go forward with the nomination and make an example out of those pledging to block her appointment. It also came from within the administration itself, which felt that a few dogmatic lawmakers, aided by a sympathetic press, had had a damaging effect on the course and conduct of foreign policy.

"She has been overwhelmingly confirmed for two different jobs in two different administrations and any fair reading of her record was exceptional," said Tommy Vietor, a White House spokesman. "We are confident she could have been confirmed."

The state of play on the Hill seemed to confirm that Rice's withdrawal wasn't related to congressional vote counts. Top Democrats have said for some time that Rice was likely to secure the support needed to win confirmation. A Senate Democratic aide told the Huffington Post Thursday that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) hadn't whipped his caucus -- that is, taken a tally of his members -- so there was no reason to think that calculus had changed. The aide added that Reid felt confident he could have held the Democrats in line, making it so that only five Republican senators were needed to confirm her.

Rice's nomination would certainly have been in the majority leader's interest. He had warned the White House against nominating Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass) to the Foggy Bottom post because doing so would create an open Senate seat in Massachusetts. Kerry now appears to be the frontrunner for the nomination.

In a show of defiance, Vietor notably declined to rule out a future post for Rice.

"She is going to go to the UN and down the road she could be Secretary of State, National Security Advisor, any number of things," he said.

And yet, the White House will inevitably be painted as partially to blame for Rice's failed bid.

For weeks, Rice was accused of having intentionally misled the American people about the cause and nature of the September attack on an American diplomatic post in Benghazi, Libya. Two senators in particular, John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), charged that Rice?s role in conveying the administration?s early understanding of the events -- that they had been inspired by an anti-Islam video and were not an act of terror -- was enough to disqualify her from a cabinet position.

There was, at one point, genuine disagreement within the administration over how much the president and his staff needed to push back on the criticism. Obama forcefully defended Rice during his first post-election press conference, telling reporters that the critics were directing their barbs at the wrong person. For a short time, it appeared, the "come-at-me" approach would suffice.

But the attacks didn't fade, and the White House struggled to come up with the right way to publicly respond.

Soon enough, Rice was angling for the opportunity to defend herself. She proposed heading to the Hill for direct talks with some of her Senate detractors. It was a gamble: she would be creating the perception that she and the administration were laying the groundwork for her nomination while lending presidential legitimacy to a line of attack that the administration didn't want legitimized. An administration official confirmed routine talks had taken place between the White House and Rice's staff over how best to respond. She ended up going.

The talks backfired. Graham, McCain, and Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.) left their meeting insisting that it had raised more questions than it answered. Soon, another voice of dissent joined the chorus. Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), typically a centrist Republican, dug into the past to suggest that Rice may somehow have been responsible for security failures ahead of the terrorist bombings of two U.S. embassies in Africa in the late 1990s.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney offered some cover during his daily briefings, but Democrats widely panned his efforts as insufficient. Left unaddressed, the controversy over Rice's appearance on the Sunday shows had metastasized beyond control, and the perception that Rice would be a lightening rod was cemented. She apparently lost the will for the battle.

"It was her decision," said one official close to the administration, "but my sense is no one tried to change her mind."

By the time the withdrawal announcement was made, even Rice's allies were caught off guard. The conventional wisdom had been that the criticism of Rice would only make Obama more eager to fight for her appointment. One friend of Rice expressed confusion over why the decision was suddenly made to not have that fight at all. But administration officials stressed that the decision was hers alone.

"I know people are going to write that [we ducked the issue] but the important thing is she made this decision ... she wanted to rise above this absurd political theater," said Vietor. "As it became clear that this could be a partisan food fight she decided it wouldn't be true to who she is to be a distraction to the priorities of the president's agenda."

Former President George H.W. Bush is seen in March 2012.

By Elizabeth Chuck, NBC News

Former President George H.W. Bush is improving after being hospitalized for bronchitis, and he should be home in time to celebrate Christmas with his family, the hospital said Thursday.

"[I]nstead of battling the lingering effects of bronchitis, the focus of his treatment now centers on a physical therapy program designed to increase his strength in advance of his eventual discharge,"?The Methodist Hospital in the Texas Medical Center said in a statement.

Bush, 88, was admitted?Nov. 29 for complications related to bronchitis.

"Given his current pace of progress, doctors expect that President Bush will be able to celebrate Christmas at home with his family -- though no release date has been set at this time," the hospital added.

Bronchitis is a common condition in which the bronchial tubes in the lungs become inflamed and produce mucus, which creates the need to cough, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It can turn serious in people with weak immune systems, including children and the elderly. Symptoms such as chest pain, weakness and coughing typically last two weeks, but can linger for as long as two months.?

Bush served as the 41st?president of the United States from 1989-1993, the capstone of a long career of public service. He lost his first bid for the Republican nomination for the presidency in 1980, at which time Ronald Reagan chose him to be his running mate. He went on to serve two terms as Reagan?s vice president.

Bush had been a Texas Republican member of the House of Representatives in the 1960s and 1970s and head of the CIA from 1976-1977.?The organization?s headquarters in Langley, Va., was later?renamed the ?George Bush Center for Intelligence.?

Before moving to Texas, where made money in oil and petroleum,?Bush?served?as a combat pilot during World War II and attended Yale University. He got married in 1945.

Bush and his wife, Barbara, had six children; one, Robin, died as a child, according to his official?WhiteHouse.gov biography. His son George W. Bush became the 43rd president of the United States; another son, Jeb Bush, was governor of Florida for nearly a decade, and is considered a?top contender for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination.

Just this week, Bush's granddaughter, Jenna Bush Hager, announced she was pregnant with her first child.

In late 2004, Bush teamed up with Bill Clinton to raise money for the victims of the Asian tsunami. That effort was so successful, the two former presidents did the same for Katrina victims in 2005.?

ANALYSIS: Egypt military keeps close eye on politics

Egyptian army tanks are deployed outside the presidential palace in Cairo on Thursday.

By Ayman Mohyeldin, NBC News

News analysis

Editor's note: This story includes a correction.

Updated at 7:25 a.m. ET: CAIRO -- Many hailed the emergence of civilian rule in Egypt when then recently elected Islamist President Mohammed Morsi ordered the country?s armed forces back to their barracks in August, after they had led the county for close to a year and a half.

But within months, the same military was functioning as the country's auxiliary police force, ensuring the safety and integrity of the upcoming constitutional referendum, and protecting the presidency ? both physically by guarding the palace and politically by acting as an intermediary to diffuse political tensions between Islamists and the opposition.

Meanwhile, the newly drafted and disputed constitution that will be up for a vote on Saturday changes little about the military's role in the state. In fact, it preserves the ability of the military to try civilians in military courts. It also maintains the secretive budget of the armed forces, which eats up a sizable chunk of the state?s coffers.

So, as Egypt lurches through a crisis pitting the country's president and his Islamist supporters against opposition forces, observers are working to figure out what exactly the country?s powerful military will do next.

Egyptian leader told: 'Fear God... postpone the referendum'

The dispute over a controversial decree giving Morsi near absolute powers reached a crescendo on Dec. 11, when protesters opposing the president's decision circled the presidential palace. Morsi supporters, mainly from the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamist parties, took to the streets in counter protests. They, too headed to the palace, only this time to confront the president?s opponents. What ensued were deadly clashes that left at least eight people dead and more than 700 injured.

NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin is outside the presidential palace in Cairo where hundreds of thousands are protesting what they say is an unjust constitution. They want to delay a vote on the current draft of the constitution now scheduled for December 15.?

Amid the turmoil and after standing on the sidelines, the powerful armed forces weighed in and issued their first political statement since Morsi was elected on June 24.

ANALYSIS: Egypt is rapidly approaching its own 'cliff'

?Anything other than [dialogue] will force us into a dark tunnel with disastrous consequences, something which we won't allow to happen,? the statement read. The call for dialogue may have struck some as a surprise because it came from an institution that served as the backbone of the country's authoritarian regimes for six decades.

Then late?Sunday night, Morsi issued a decree granting the country's military law enforcement powers, essentially giving the armed forces the legal authority to act as the country's police force. The military was allowed to arrest and detain civilians in the run up to the key constitutional referendum starting Saturday. It was also tasked with securing the thousands of polling stations around the country, meaning its job was to secure the integrity and safety of the voting process and the voters.

The move has drawn sharp criticism from Human Rights Watch, an international organization, which said the military's emergence as a law enforcement authority raises serious human rights concerns.

Egypt army gets temporary power to arrest civilians ahead of referendum

Islamist forces, however, remain skeptical of the military. After all, for decades it was the country's senior internal security leadership in conjunction with the military that hunted down Islamist leaders, jailing them and torturing them under strongman Hosni Mubarak and his predecessors.

Opponents of Egypt President Morsi say he's betraying the revolution, but his supporters say he wants to guarantee human rights with a controversial referendum on a new constitution. NBC's John Ray went onto the streets of Cairo to hear from both sides of the deepening divide.

What Egypt's military wants
The military, which had recoiled back to its bases after it led the country for nearly 18 months following the revolution that toppled Mubarak, remains skeptical, too.

?They have not been neutral. While appearing to be sympathetic to the protesters' demands, they remain suspicious of popular mobilization's ability to induce change that goes beyond their control,? said Joshua Stacher, a fellow at the Woodrow Wilson Center and author of "Adaptable Autocrats."

Google+ Hangout with NBC News' Ayman Mohyeldin

The military is also not standing on the sidelines and will likely remain the last arbiter of Egypt?s politics. Any appearance to the contrary is a result of the armed forces being ?intentionally opaque,? Stacher said.?

?I don't believe that they have a plan worked out. Rather, they are waiting to see how the situation evolves before deciding what is the best course of action,? he added.

Egyptian soldiers stand in line as anti-Morsi protesters stand on top of a barricade erected by the army to protect the Presidential Palace in Cairo on Tuesday.

The best course of action may just be revealing itself. The proposed constitution also stipulates that future defense ministers must be officers.

But the real test of power, Stacher and others argue, will be whether the military retains control over its vast economic empire and secretive budget under a new constitution.

External link: English translation of Egypt's draft constitution

?The military prefers to remain behind the curtain influencing events,? he said. ?They also have the constitution that they want in terms of securing their interests. They would prefer that the constitution pass, they stay formally out of politics, and the protesters go home.?

jugindarsharma8: Shopping and Product Reviews: Will Traditional ...

The popularity of online shopping has been seen by many as a threat to the existence of traditional shopping. Their argument is based on the recent widespread closure of established brands like Sears and Best Buy. But can we really say that traditional shopping is dying?

In 2011, even though the U.S economy was sluggish, shopping grew by 15% over the previous year. In addition, about 35% of Americans now have smartphones which enable them to purchase goods and services over the internet and this figure is expected to rise significantly in subsequent years. In actual fact, about half of smartphone users have used their phones for one purchase or the other. On Christmas day of 2011 alone, about 6.8 million iOs and Android smartphones were activated. Top internet retailer, Amazon, recorded a whooping net sale of $48.08 billion in 2011 which represents 40.6% increase over $32.20 billion recorded in 2010. This figure is expected to rise in 2012 and subsequent years. What then is the implication of all these to physical retailing?

Since many people now decide to shop over the internet due to the benefits derivable in doing so like convenience, easy access to market, price comparison, avoidance of crowd, better prices and so on, can we really say that that the traditional way of shopping is being threatened? In my own opinion, technology will enhance the traditional method and not kill it. The popularity of video cassette recorder (VCR) in the 80?s was seen by many as a threat to movie theaters then, but today, the film industry has been strengthened by the new technology and the demand for films has increased.

Moreover, when the email became very popular, a lot people thought that the traditional postal service would die, but today, it is waxing stronger. The point I?m driving at here is that, if traditional shop owners can embrace new technology, shopping on the internet would not be a threat to them but a blessing.

If physical retailers can monitor shopping behavior through the use of Wi-Fi signals from smartphones, they would be able to compete favorably in a fast-changing world. They can use technology to measure loyalty, make better staffing decisions, improve store layouts, reduce wait times in checkout lines and so on. Online shopping has come to stay but it is not a threat to traditional shopping because many consumers still value some of its features like quality of customer service, the experience of trying and buying products, how products are displayed and so on.

Researchers demonstrate a new kind of quantum entanglement

Physicists at the University of Calgary and at the Institute for Quantum Computing in Waterloo have published new research in Nature Physics which builds on the original ideas of Einstein and adds a new ingredient: a third entangled particle.

Quantum entanglement is one of the central principles of quantum physics, which is the science of sub-atomic particles. Multiple particles, such as photons, are connected with each other even when they are very far apart and what happens to one particle can have an effect on the other one at the same moment, even though these effects can not be used to send information faster than light.

The new form of three-particle entanglement demonstrated in this experiment, which is based on the position and momentum properties of photons, may prove to be a valuable part of future communications networks that operate on the rules of quantum mechanics, and could lead to new fundamental tests of quantum theory that deepen our understanding of the world around us.

"This work opens up a rich area of exploration that combines fundamental questions in quantum mechanics and quantum technologies," says Christoph Simon, paper co-author and researcher at the University of Calgary.

This research extends the theories of Einstein, seventy-seven years later. In 1935, Albert Einstein, Boris Podolsky, and Nathan Rosen, commonly referred to as EPR, published a thought experiment designed to show that quantum mechanics, by itself, is not sufficient to describe reality.

Using two entangled particles EPR tried to demonstrate that there must be some hidden parameters that quantum mechanics does not account for. Later John Bell and others showed that the kind of hidden parameters EPR had in mind are incompatible with our observations. The mystery at the heart of quantum mechanics thus remains intact. But the entanglement first proposed by EPR is now a valuable resource in emerging quantum technologies like quantum computing, quantum cryptography, and quantum precision measurements.

"It is exciting, after all this time, to be able to finally create, control, and entangle, quantum particles in this new way. Using these new states of light it may be possible to interact with and entangle distant quantum computer memories based on exotic atomic gases, " says Thomas Jennewein, whose group at the University of Waterloo carried out the experiment.

The next step for the researchers is to try to combine the position and momentum entanglement between their three photons with more traditional types of entanglement based on angular momentum. This will allow the creation of hybrid quantum systems that combine multiple unique properties of light at the same time.

Product Launch 101 - Knowing The Importance Of Creating A Good ...

What is a product launch? Quite simply, it is a systematic roll out of a product. This can either be a new product or re-introducing an existing product. This will create buzz and excitement in a market place that'll bring you new customers, you can send this product launch out to current customers, competitors will take notice and you might even get some affiliate marketers to sell your products for you as well.

As far as from a marketplace stand point, this builds a lot of good will with your prospective customers. In the process of the product launch, you'll give away a lot of valuable information for free, potentially giving them results in advance. Which is information that they can use and put into action right away that will help them get closer to their end goals of business. This will build up trust and good will with your prospective customers. The ultimate result of a good product launch process is that, your prospects will be eagerly waiting the launch and the release of your new product.

Will this work in your business? The short answer is YES! It works for products, it works for services and it's a rock solid process for giving your market what they want and what they need. Ultimately, it creates prospects who want to buy your product.

The first step is the Pre- Pre Launch. This starts with a new product or a new service. The first question you need to ask is, what does your market want? Or what does your market need? Chances are you already have all the information in marketing research all around you. You need to just look at what your current customers are currently asking you for or if you're a consumer in that market, what do wish was available and ultimately what would make a positive impact on the market that you've selected. That's pretty much the product research that we do that ensures that your product launch will be successful.

The next step would be the Pre Launch. This is where you're going to produce 3 valuable pieces of content that will be given away to your market. This can either be videos, PDFs, articles, audio presentation, a complimentary product, a cheat sheet, a seminar recording or a webinar with valuable information.

The key to this section is to distribute this content in the proper sequence and you want to space this launch out over a period of about 7 to 10 days. This will help you build an excitement to help your anticipation with your market. If you go any longer that 10 days, you'll risk losing the momentum that you've built up with each success of piece of content that you're giving out.

Something to remember is that each of your content needs to build upon the previous piece of content. Here's what a lot of people fail miserably, to be completely honest with you, they forget that in the third piece of content, this is the one right before your self presentation that needs to tease the upcoming products just a little bit. Just mention it! Mention that something new is coming available and that's a very important step. But unfortunately, a lot of people missed that and when they go and launch the product. They'll fail and they don't know why. We'll that's usually the reason.

When you're trying to consider which type of content to give away, a good rule of thumb is to give away a what to do and you charge for the how to do it. That's basically the rule thumb, give away the "what" to do and charge for the specifics on "how" to do it.

Finally, we've come to the actual Launch of the Product. This is a sales video or sales letter that announces the availability of a product or in internet marketing that the cart is open. That's the term that is used in internet marketing. You really want to keep the cart open for about 4 to 7 days depending on sales. Any longer than 7 days and you can appear desperate for sales, so that's not what you're looking for. But there needs to be a deadline for when the cart closes and as the old adage says, "An offer without a deadline isn't an offer".

The majority of the sales will be on the first and last days because this is where the urgency of the buyers as the highest. As you're closing in on the end of that open cart phase, you want to contact prospects 24 hours before the cart closes. This is to warn them of the limited availability. This will lead to that little bit of urgency and again it'll give you a little bump in sales on the last day.

Now if your product launch didn't go exactly as you planned, you can always re-open the cart or re-launch the product if necessary. Just make sure that you give a good reason. That could be you came across more supply, there was an increase demand, popular customer feedback, and it can be really anything. You just need to make sure that you're giving the reason so that way you won't take off an early customer you've told it's only available for a short period of time. Again, the re-open or the re-launch must have a deadline as well and hope this will help you with your next product launch.

Adele's "21" is top-selling U.S. iTunes album of 2012

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - British singer Adele notched another accolade on Thursday as iTunes announced that her Grammy-winning album "21" was the top-selling record of 2012 in its U.S. store, extending the disc's successful run almost two years after it was released.

Adele, 24, who last year became the first artist to secure three iTunes milestones with top-selling album, single and artist of the year, came in ahead of country-pop star Taylor Swift's "Red" and British folk band Mumford & Sons' "Babel."

ITunes did not reveal its sales or download figures.

British boy band One Direction's debut album "Up All Night" and current Grammy nominees fun.'s debut "Some Nights" rounded out the five top-selling albums on iTunes in the United States.

"21," released in February 2011, has performed strongly in the U.S. music charts this year following the singer's Grammy-sweeping win in six categories in February 2012.

Adele also landed Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globe nominations for her sultry James Bond theme song "Skyfall" this week, becoming a strong contender in the best song category for Hollywood's awards season.

"Thank you so much for the honor of being included in something as brilliant as the Golden Globes! Never in a million years did I ever think I'd come close to such a thing! Truly wonderful ... thank you to the Bond family for giving me the opportunity," the singer said in a statement on Thursday.

ITunes U.S. compiled their Best of 2012 list by looking at the most downloaded items from the Apple iTunes store.

Canadian pop star Carly Rae Jepsen had the top-selling track for her infectious breakthrough summer single "Call Me Maybe."

Post-apocalyptic action film "The Hunger Games" was the best-selling movie while the second season of British aristocratic period drama "Downton Abbey," another Hollywood awards favorite, was iTunes' top-selling television series.

What Is Native Advertising and Why Should I Care About It ... - IMGrind

(3:13 AM at the IMGrind Offices ? Coffee Brewing)?Gooooooooooood Early Morning Grinders! Preston here and since I woke up on the office couch after watching back to back episodes of Amish Mafia (don?t judge me), I felt inclined to grind some beans, make some coffee and start blogging.

Each and every day, myself, Ruck and Ryan hold discussions about the changes (good and bad) within the realm of online marketing and advertising. As you know, what is here today is gone tomorrow and the evolution of our world morphs and changes at break-neck speed. Recognizing this, let?s take a look at Native Advertising.

Native advertising is the incorporation of high quality content into the experience of a given platform or website. This advertising content does not detract from the user?s experience on the website or platform on which it is being used ? hence its suggested power.

With native advertising you are paying to be a part of the conversation within the subject matter of the content, where in display your are paying to interrupt the experience. Native advertising is not an advertorial on the latest pill-form diet solution or how you can sell back energy and get off the grid with some obscure solar energy motor. It is also not an automated form of advertising, nor will you find it inside of an ad box. Remember, it is instream ? organic content.

Banner advertising has been around since the beginning of the graphical web experience and through that time, these ads have largely lost their effectiveness as they offer no value.?Many users of the web are jaded when it comes to this type of ?in your face? advertising.

While banner ads can be relevant if they mirror the intentions of the consumable content, the media is losing steam. Translation ? banner ads are largely being ignored (rich media banners probably stand the best chance of getting clicks among static and gif). While we don?t expect banner inventory sales to take a massive crash or go away completely, we are suggesting that content based/driven advertisements could start appearing more across the web.

More Info on Native Advertising at Mashable Media Summit

The most recognizable versions of native advertising that exist today are Facebook sponsored stories, promoted tweets and paid discovery (stumbleupon). Undoubtedly, you have seen these forms during your sessions on these sites. The success of this new form advertising is highly dependent upon the user experience. If there is true value within the content, it is the hope and aspiration of native advertising adopters that consumers will be more inclined to click through for more information.

Why You Should Care About Native Advertising:

  • 57% of venture capitalists, angel donors and private equity firms have stated that they are likely to invest in companies that sell native advertising
  • 34% of publishers mention that they are likely to add native advertising options to their menus.
  • In a poll of more than 200 media buyers, the average increase in expected native ad spending will hover around 12.6% in 2013
  • Banner ad click through rates are steadily declining
  • Today?s web user is looking for a beautiful, streamlined experience and native advertising works well within it.
  • As a publisher, if you are concerned about giving your visitors an awesome user experience, and you care not to bombard your audience with banners, you may want to consider this form of advertising.
