Obama's Inauguration Might Have Trouble Paying Its Bills

MELBOURNE, Jan 12 (Reuters) - Short of tournament sharpness in the build-up to the Australian Open because of injury, Maria Sharapova has found a novel way of playing herself into form - roughing up the local boys. The Russian world number two has been getting into the groove by beating up on Australia's top young players, having pulled out of Brisbane with a neck injury last week. Sharapova has found some willing opponents in a couple of Australians, including Luke Saville, last year's junior champion at Melbourne Park. ...

US called on to lead in Israel-Palestine peace efforts

Jerusalem. Credit: Marianne Medlin/CNA.

.- Religious leaders from across the United States asked the Obama administration to make peace efforts between Israel and Palestine a priority over the next four years.

?American political leadership is needed now more than ever to support both Israelis and Palestinians in creating a resilient and just peace,? said representatives of 35 Christian denominations.

In a Jan. 7 letter to U.S. President Barack Obama, they warned that allowing the status quo to continue could prolong the conflict and bring greater violence to the region.

?As you embark upon your second term, there is an unprecedented opportunity for your Administration to play a catalytic role in the resolution of this conflict,? they told the president.

Bishop Richard E. Pates of Des Moines, who chairs the U.S. bishops? Committee on International Justice and Peace, was one of the signatories of the letter. Other signers included representatives of Episcopalian, Baptist, Greek Orthodox, Lutheran and other religious communities in the United States.

?As faith leaders deeply committed to peace and reconciliation in this land held sacred by so many, we write to ask that you now bring the full energies of your Administration to bear toward facilitating a just, durable, and final negotiated agreement to end the Arab-Israeli-Palestinian conflict,? they said.

The signatories acknowledged the challenges and cost associated with peace efforts, as well as the opposition faced from those on both sides.

An environment of fear and lack of trust make negotiations difficult, they said, ?but another generation cannot wait as prospects for peace grow dimmer.?

Offering prayers that the president may be guided with courage and wisdom, the religious leaders urged the U.S. to place ?the full weight of its support behind the long-term well-being of Israelis and Palestinians.?

?Proposals put forward must be feasible and convincingly address their separate national aspirations for security and justice,? they stressed.

Leaders of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops have also spoken out on the importance of American leadership in the region.

Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan of New York, president of the bishops? conference, joined Bishop Pates in calling for ?a high profile envoy? to work for peace and justice in the area.

In a Jan. 9 letter to President Obama, the two bishops observed that ?our nation has a special obligation to exercise vigorous leadership for Israeli-Palestinian peace.?

Echoing the Holy Father?s calls for peace in the region, they encouraged efforts towards a two-state solution, comprised of ?a secure and recognized Israel living in peace alongside a viable and independent Palestinian state.?

The bishops acknowledged that actions by both Palestinians and Israelis ?perpetuate an unsustainable status quo? that endangers the entire region.

Recent rocket attacks from Gaza into southern Israel are ?morally unjustifiable uses of indiscriminate force against civilians? that undermine the trust needed for negotiations, they said, while Israeli occupation and expansion in the West Bank ?compromise the territorial viability of a future Palestinian state.?

At the same time, they emphasized that the lack of peace is taking ?a heavy toll on both Israelis and Palestinians, and especially on the indigenous ancient Christian community of the Holy Land that is emigrating at alarming rates.?

?What is urgently needed is indefatigable and insistent leadership,? the bishops said. ?The United States, as a consequence of its relationships and potentially significant influence, is poised, in our estimation, to be the most effective arbiter in this tangled situation that portends enormous risk for the world.?

Pledging their support to the U.S. government?s efforts for peace, Cardinal Dolan and Bishop Pates urged leadership that gives both Israelis and Palestinians ?hope for a different future free of the shadows of violence and open to the light of peace.?

Serbia loosens grip over Kosovo

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) ? Serbia on Sunday adopted a set of guidelines for reconciliation talks with the leaders of Kosovo, in a strong first signal it is loosening its claim to its former province in hopes of getting closer to European Union membership.

In a resolution adopted by an overwhelming majority in Parliament, Serbia maintained it will never recognize Kosovo's 2008 declaration of independence. But in a big shift in policy, the document called for wide autonomy for minority Serbs within Kosovo's borders, indirectly recognizing Kosovo's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

While outlining a government plan for the talks with Kosovo's ethnic Albanian leaders, Serbia's Prime Minister Ivica Dacic said "Serbia's sovereignty over Kosovo practically does not exist" since NATO's 1999 bombing campaign chased Serbian troops out of the region.

Kosovo, which is recognized by some 90 countries including the United States and most EU states, is considered by Serbian nationalist the medieval cradle of the Serbian state and the Orthodox religion ? something like Jerusalem for the Jews ? and they have pledged never to give it up.

But, Dacic warned against "myths and fairytales" over Kosovo and said "we have to create a strong basis to save something."

"If Serbia keeps its head in the sand, it will have nothing to negotiate about," Dacic, who was former President Slobodan Milosevic's spokesman during the Kosovo war, said. "People need results and responsibility, not a policy of honorable failures and lost battles."

The more pragmatic approach to the ongoing talks indicates Serbian desire to get closer to EU membership. The EU said a progress in the talks is crucial for Belgrade to get a starting date for accession negotiations.

Hard-line nationalist lawmakers denounced the resolution, saying it represents "treason" and "a selloff" to the EU.

Serbia's nationalist President Tomislav Nikolic, who initiated the text of the original, more expansive resolution, praised the adoption of the document.

"This was a typical Serbian day in the parliament," Nikolic said, referring to the deep divisions in Serbia over Kosovo and other issues. "We did not reach a complete consensus, but it is clear that there is will to help find a solution to this problem."

After the media hype, clergy members remain to aid Superstorm victims

A group of clergy members in New Jersey are working with local agencies and organizations to better address victims of Superstorm Sandy who show signs of emotional distress.

By Bob Vosseller,?Asbury Park Press / January 13, 2013

Theresa and Paul Wade collect Superstorm Sandy relief funds at a school auditorium in the Rockaways section of New York, Jan. 10. In New Jersey, as the media coverage of the Superstorm fades, clergy members are working with local organizations to help victims of the storm facing emotional distress, or depression.

Long after the media leaves and the federal agencies move out, the emotional and spiritual needs of the superstorm victims could remain.

A group of clergy members recently organized two events designed to help inspire and prepare local volunteers to address those needs.

"We really believe it is important to come and empower the local organization and agencies who know their communities better and have a heart for their community," the Rev. Doug Stringer, founder and president of Houston-based Somebody Cares America/International, told the Asbury Park Press of Neptune.

Stringer spoke to about 30 local clergy and volunteers Wednesday at the Hope Cathedral Church in Jackson about how they can help people impacted by Superstorm Sandy.

Stringer said typically people impacted by events such as?Sandy?show signs of emotional distress, which includes an inability to sleep, depression and restlessness.

"In trying to help them, we try and stress that there is no shame in seeking out help and that they are not going through this alone," he said.

Stringer was among the special guests who came out for a?Sandy?healing service held at the Hope Cathedral on Wednesday night and took part in Thursday's workshops, which centered on topics such as verbal first aid and caring for the caregiver.

Chaplain Edward Smith, a counselor at the event from Victim?Relief?Ministries, spoke about having visited Haiti following a major storm.

"The Haitian pastors felt distress themselves," he said.

Stringer said representatives of area church groups in Ocean, Monmouth, areas of southern New Jersey and New York attended the program.

"We found in 20-plus years working in disasters, the first phase of any crisis is food and shelter and medical attention and short- and long-term housing. One area that is neglected is grief and trauma, which is a long-term process," he said.

In addition to the Jackson visit, Stringer and other volunteers will hold services, grief counseling and mentoring workshops this week in Queens and Staten Island.

Gene Grounds, another counselor from Victim?Relief?Ministries, said during Wednesday's healing service that "our ministry is designed to recruit, train and deploy volunteers to work with people in crisis."

He said the grief counseling workshops also assist local clergy and volunteers to help people suffering from a personal crisis and not just major events such as?Sandy.

"There is always life beyond our circumstances," Stringer said. Catastrophic events such as?Sandy?allow for people "from preachers to politicians to have a revival of character and to get back to basics of what we're supposed to do, which is helping people."

Lawmaker wants federal weapons ban illegal in Texas

THE WOODLANDS -- A Republican lawmaker from The Woodlands says he's trying to make sure the federal government doesn't take away our gun rights.

Don't mess with Texans or their guns. That?s how state Rep. Steve Toth (R-Woodlands) sees it.

Toth wants to make any new federal weapons ban illegal in the state of Texas.

?This is a hardened state. This isn't a good place for a criminal to show up and start shooting,? said Rep. Toth.

So, he?s proposing legislation that would make any federal law banning semiautomatic firearms or limiting the size of gun magazines unenforceable in the Lone Star State.

?We want to make sure this legislation protects the Second Amendment gun rights and the Tenth Amendment which is state sovereignty rights of Texans

This controversial idea comes on the heels of another state lawmaker, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, and his views about gun training for Texas teachers.

?In case we've got school personnel with a concealed handgun permit that are in that school and there's an active shooter, we don't want the children harmed we don't want the teacher harmed,? said Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst.

Under his plan, the state would foot the bill for gun training. The decision to allow for concealed weapons on campus would be made district by district.

?You're not turning the schools into an armed camp with a lot of police officers,? said Dewhurst. ?At the same time, you're sending a message if you publicize it to bad people, stay away from our children.?

But the lieutenant governor's idea isn't exactly sitting well with some parents.

?I don't believe in guns, so I believe in ban gun period,? said parent Tina Swangphol.

?Maybe there could be another way,? said parent Patricia Pittman. ?I know they need to be trained, but it shouldn't come out of taxpayer money.?

The debate over teachers and guns will no doubt be a hot topic in Austin, but Rep. Toth believes his proposed Firearm Protection Act will easily pass.

Under his plan, anyone trying to enforce a federal gun ban could be charged with a felony in Texas.

On women priests: ?If you really loved the church, you?d be a little broken up about being excommunicated??

You no doubt remember the video ?Ordain a Lady? that set jaws dropping around the blogosphere.

Now, a good response from blogger Kathleen Burke:?(A grateful diaconal bow to Deacon Scott Dodge for this!)

If you really loved the Church, and valued your membership in the Church as the Body of Christ, you?d be a little broken up about being excommunicated . . . you wouldn?t be glowing. And while St. Paul is the king of the run-on-sentence that?s no reason to throw him out of the Bible; the fact that he writes things you find inconvenient is an equally bad reason to ignore what he says. That?s basically like saying ignore any part of Scripture that you disagree with. Oh, wait, that?s exactly what they?re saying.

If you go to the Women?s Ordination Conference?s website and flip through it you?ll glean some interesting information. They think the Church is racist, sexist, and, of course, homophobic. They?signed onto?a press release from Catholics for Choice supporting the HHS mandate, indicating their support for not only abortion and contraception but for making the Church pay for it. They support married clergy. They support gay marriage. So basically, they disagree with almost every teaching of the Church in regard to gender, sexuality, and family (how convenient) and think it?s institutionally horrible. I don?t understand why anyone would voluntarily associate themselves with people they think so poorly of . . . but they say they deeply love the Church. I mean, hey, they were baptized . . . but so was Henry VIII, so I?m not really sure what that?s supposed to mean.

Don?t get me wrong, I looked into the St. Therese quote and I?m kind of ambivalent about it. Here?s the passage often cited by Womyn Priest advocates:

?I feel as if I were called to be a fighter, a priest, an apostle, a doctor, a martyr; as if I could never satisfy the needs of my nature without performing, for Your sake, every kind of heroic action at once. I feel as if I?d got the courage to be a Crusader, a Pontifical Zouave, dying on the battlefield in defence of the Church. And at the same time I want to be a priest; how lovingly I?d carry You in my hands when you came down from heaven at my call; how lovingly I?d bestow You on men?s souls! And yet, with all this desire to be a priest, I?ve nothing but admiration and envy for the humility of St. Francis; I?d willingly imitate him in refusing the honour of the priesthood.?Of course they cite it out of context, but I?ve learned that is to be expected. They cite the fact that she?s a saint as proof for their position. I?m going to cite another saint for them, one they might want to emulate: St. Pio. The Church wrongly cracked down on Padre Pio; in his canonization he was exonerated. A true calling would call you to obedience, and it may be a horrible struggle, but it would be one you would undertake for love of God and Church.

Read it all.?

landing pages vs blog posts

Hi all,

Where do you direct traffic to? Do you favour specific landing pages, or blog posts? Are blog posts easier to rank in google?

The pages I have in mind advertise specific areas a service can be performed, and as there are multiple areas in the overall catchment area, I want to create multiple landing pages to capture traffic for all these areas. Does it matter if its a blog or a specific landing page?

What are your thoughts and experiences, I'd love to hear!

Landing pages are generally used on paid advertising campaigns, be it PPC, media or whatever - that way you can funnel the visitors directly to the specific offer and cut the chit chat.

A blog post would probably be easier to rank, and if you have your page layout done correctly then the visitors should still flow to where you want them to go.

If you look at;

http://www.searchenginejournal.com/p...in-2013/57148/

In SEJ case they are advertising the subscribe, social and banner ads which are layered throughout the page - but that could be anything including lead gen etc.

as above ^^^^ landing pages are really a PPC/Adwords concept.

A good landing page is specifically designed to maximise conversion (and quality score) for specific Ad campaigns.

Awesome, so you guys would say blog posts would be fine to attract traffic for different location based keywords?

In terms of the good old 'duplicated content', the majority of the blog posts will say roughly the same thing, with only the area changed. How much content can be replicated in each one, and how much needs to be completely fresh?

I'm just testing the water here.

Use geo location, the same post will simply insert the town or city the visitor viewing from.It is used frequently on landing pages and works with a blog just fine.

Saves alot of pages, and besides having mutiples pages saying the same thing will attract unwanted google attention.

Sounds interesting, excuse my ignorance, but is this a wordpress plugin or something? Also, how does this help me target specific areas? For example I would want to offer the service in Manchester, but not Liverpool, so would visitors from Liverpool see the service as being available to them in Liverpool?

Would I not be better just creating similar pages targeting the places I want to target?

My question is really how much duplicate/similar content can I get away with, and how much of each page needs to be 100% unique?

Blog posts are a great way of squeezing in long tail keywords/phrases as well as geo specific ones. They would enable you to discuss the product/service in detail, as it relates to a particular location, without keyword stuffing your main brochure site full of city related pages.

Blog pages are meant to be the bait which attracts visitors to the site, where you then either direct them onward to the products/services they should buy, or capture their contact information so that you can market to them via email.

In my opinion, you don't want to have blog posts which say the same thing except the location, in my opinion that wouldn't help you much (I am guessing your objective is to win organic traffic on a local basis).

Geo-location won't help you with organic local searches as it presents a different location based on the users location. So the Google BOt would see 'Mountain View - California'.

Geo-location is best used for specific landing pages, e.g. you can alter the text to say 'Special Offer this week for people near xxxxxtown'
I would see 'Special Offer this week for people near Staines' webgeek may see 'Special Offer this week for people near Glasgow' baring in mind the geo-location limitation of generally being dependent on the users ISP location, not their actual location . (I put generally in bold as there are exceptions).

Yes the idea is to win local traffic, be it through blog posts or pages. Just looking for any advice on if there is any specific advice either way, or if its much of a muchness? I know the old adage is to test out what works best, was just hoping someone had tested it out already

Leadership and effective communication ? Lead on Purpose

Posted on by Michael Ray Hopkin

Effective communication is one of the most challenging aspects in life. Regardless of your role in any organization (company, family, church, etc.), understanding the intentions of others and communicating your objectives is trying at times, and occasionally downright frustrating. However, if you want to build strong relationships of trust, effective communication is absolutely critical. Here are five key considerations:

  1. Recognize the issue. In the majority of cases where poor communication is the problem, the primary issue is not recognizing poor communication. Too often it seems the problem lies with the other person, or they don?t listen, or they are just stubborn. More often they don?t understand your intentions. Step back and look at the bigger picture; you might be surprised by what you see.
  2. Look for solutions. Never try to pin the problem on the other person. Talk through the issues and look for signs of misunderstanding. Take the approach that you want to solve problems and the answers will follow.
  3. Exercise patience. It?s easy to get frustrated when you disagree with another person?s actions or behavior. Exercising (literally having or working out) patience is key to solving problems. Lead out in making things happen to improve your relationships. Be humble and open to things you did wrong.
  4. Forgive. Holding grudges and acting out of pride has brought down many companies, families and even nations. The simple solution is to forgive and move forward without holding grudges.
  5. Don?t wait. When you recognize an issue, don?t hesitate to act. The longer you wait the harder it is to approach the person and have the conversation. Act quickly and you will be surprised how much easier it is to resolve the problem.

Every relationship is worth the effort it takes to communicate effectively. Leaders, regardless of their role, need to focus constantly on assuring they communicate effectively and listen intently. Make it a habit; it will save you from having to face much bigger problems.
