Unusual???

One of my first coral purchase was some GSP. For several months it didn?t do a lot. Then it started to grow but not crazy. Last couple months it has grown big time. About two months ago I noticed something I thought was growing out of it. I kept an eye on it as it continued to grow and then noticed a second one. Finally remembered to get a picture of it tonight only to find an emerald crab scaling it. LOL So, all the polyps are pulled in on these pics but normally the polyps are fully extended on all of it. Is it normal for GSP to grow vertical tubes like this?

South Africa labor turmoil hitting growth

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Two months of crippling labor turmoil are likely to force South Africa to look again at its economic growth forecasts, the central bank's deputy governor said on Sunday.

Wildcat strikes that started in the platinum mines have left more than 50 dead and spilled to other industries, undermining investor confidence in Africa's biggest economy and tarnishing President Jacob Zuma's government.

Violent clashes between police and protesters continued over the weekend and more than 70 miners were arrested.

"Growth forecasts will most likely need to be revisited," Reserve Bank Deputy Governor Daniel Mminele said in a speech to a JP Morgan investor seminar in Tokyo that was posted on the central bank's website.

The Reserve Bank's latest economic growth forecasts were for an average 2.6 percent this year and 3.4 percent next - still far short of the rate South Africa reckons it needs to cut unemployment accounting for a quarter of the labor force.

It was not immediately clear whether those growth forecasts, given in September, were the ones Mminele was referring to.

In another knock for South Africa, Standard and Poor's cut its credit rating on Friday, citing the strikes and social tensions. Moody's downgraded South Africa in September.

Reacting to the downgrades, Mminele said they were disappointing, but some of the criticism was valid.

IMPACT OF WAGES

Financial analysts are not only worried by the turmoil, but also by the possible impact on inflation of wage rises that some of the strikers have won - up to 22 percent in the case of Lonmin Plc miners.

The central bank had yet to see evidence that hefty wage increases were becoming the norm, but would have to keep a close eye on them in case they had a spillover in pushing up prices or expectations of price rises, Mminele said.

Clashes continued over the weekend, nearly two months after police shot dead 34 strikers at Lonmin's Marikana mine on August16, the bloodiest security incident in South Africa's post-apartheid history.

Police broke up a sit-in by nearly 600 miners from a Gold Fields mine demanding the release of colleagues at a police station, about 45 km (30 miles) west of Johannesburg. Seventy-two miners were arrested.

Near Rustenburg, in the "platinum belt" about 120 km (75 miles) northwest of Johannesburg, police fired tear gas and rubber bullets after a march on an Anglo American Platinum mine turned violent. Four protesters were arrested.

President Zuma's government has been criticized for allowing the strikes to spread, as well as failure to address yawning class divisions and grinding poverty that still characterize South Africa 18 years after the end of apartheid.

Zuma faces a significant threat from members of the ruling African national Congress who are lobbying for his removal as head of the party at a scheduled leadership election in December. He held a "social dialogue meeting" on Friday with union and business leaders and some cabinet ministers to discuss the economy.

But the meeting appeared to deliver little new: Zuma's office released a statement pushing the need for improved industrial relations and condemning the violent strikes.

Separately, Mines Minister Susan Shabangu was quoted by local media on the need for the ANC to drop talk of nationalization. Some members of the party have lobbied for increased state intervention in the industry.

Charges dropped against banker in NYC cab fare dispute

STAMFORD, Connecticut (Reuters) - Connecticut prosecutors on Monday dropped charges against a former high-ranking Morgan Stanley banker accused of stabbing a New York City cab driver in a dispute over a fare, saying the driver had concealed evidence.

William Bryan Jennings, of Darien, Connecticut, had been charged with intimidation as a hate crime, theft and assault against cab driver Mohamed Ammar after they argued last December. Jennings had pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Ammar drove Jennings to Connecticut from a holiday party in Manhattan, but when they arrived at Jennings' driveway, a fight broke out over the fare, which the driver said had been agreed at $204.

In a brief hearing in Connecticut Superior Court in Stamford, about 40 miles northeast of New York, prosecutor Steven Weiss said he would not proceed with the case because Ammar had for five months concealed from authorities the knife allegedly used to assault him.

"I can't go forward with a case where the victim concealed evidence," Weiss said.

Neither the cab driver, Ammar, of the New York City borough of Queens, nor his attorney, Hassan Ahmad, appeared in court. Advocates of Ammar planned a press conference for later on Monday.

Two of Ammar's supporters, who arrived at the Stamford courthouse after the hearing, complained about the prosecutor's decision.

"We thought there was plenty of evidence to go forward," said Mongi Dhaouadi, a representative of the Connecticut Council of Masajid, a Muslim community organization. "We just wanted a judge and a jury to decide. To drop the case, it sends the wrong message."

Immediately after the incident came to light, Morgan Stanley put Jennings on leave. He is no longer with the firm.

Eugene Riccio, Jennings' lawyer, said: "This is a lesson in the unfortunate circumstance when someone of prominence gets arrested and the public and press jump to the wrong conclusion."

Jennings, who appeared in court wearing a charcoal suit, blue shirt and blue tie, told reporters after the hearing: "The outcome speaks for itself."

First Titan Corp. acquires working interest in a new Louisiana oil and gas well

Monday, October 15, 2012

First Titan Corp. (OTCBB: FTTN) announced today that it has completed its acquisition of a working interest in a Lake Boeuf Field oil and gas well in Southeast Louisiana.

The Lake Boeuf Field prospect covers more than 300 leasehold acres in Lafourche Parish. It is the fifth working interest in a prospective U.S. oil and gas well that FTTN has acquired in the past year.

'The preliminary data on this well is very promising, and we expect that it will become a profitable addition to our growing list of energy assets,' said FTTN CEO Robert Federowicz. 'Now that we've got oil flowing in Alabama, this is the next one of many new acquisitions to come.'

FTTN is aggressively pursuing potentially lucrative oil and gas leases along the Gulf Coast. With the Louisiana acquisition now complete, the company will turn its focus to bringing more of its working interests online in the coming months as well as acquiring more promising drilling sites in the U.S.

China's inflation eases, giving room for stimulus

(AP) ? China's inflation eased further in September, giving the government more room to stimulate the country's slowing economy.

Consumer inflation fell to 1.9 percent from August's 2 percent rate, data showed Monday. Politically sensitive food prices rose 2.5 percent, down from the previous month's 3.4 percent.

The decline gives Beijing more room to cut interest rates or boost spending to reverse the country's deepest slowdown since the 2008 global crisis.

"There's no argument about it, the economy is yet to stabilize," said IHS Global Insight economist Alistair Thornton in a report.

"Fears surrounding the inflationary impact of monetary loosening on consumer prices are misplaced ? the onus remains on growth stabilization."

Producer prices contracted 3.6 percent compared with a year earlier, a striking sign of slack demand despite two interest rate cuts since the start of June and higher government spending on building airports and other public works.

Chinese leaders have been moving cautiously in response to the slowdown after their huge stimulus in 2008 ignited inflation and a wasteful building boom. Economic growth fell to a three-year low of 7.6 percent in the quarter ending in June and officials including President Hu Jintao have warned it may decline further before recovering.

Analysts expect growth to decline further to about 7.3 percent when the latest quarter's figures are reported this week. Last week, the World Bank cut its annual growth forecast for China to 7.7 percent from its May outlook of 8.2 percent.

Forecasters expect a recovery to start late this year or in early 2013 but say it likely will be too weak to drive global demand without improvement in the United States and Europe.

Trade data released Saturday showed Chinese imports revived slightly from the previous month's contraction but grew by only 2.4 percent, suggesting a recovery has yet to take hold.

The slowdown is due partly to government curbs imposed to cool an overheated economy. Chinese leaders are trying to make their economy more efficient and resilient by reducing reliance on imports and investment and promoting domestic consumption and technology-based industries, but domestic consumption is growing slowly.

"There is little convincing evidence that spending growth is doing anything better than standing still," said Mark Williams and Qinwei Wang of Capital Economics in a report.

The government has pumped money into the economy by approving a multibillion-dollar wave of investments by state companies and spending on subways, airports and other public facilities.

Analysts expect no major new initiatives until a once-a-decade handover of power to younger Communist Party leaders begins at a meeting in November.

"We do not expect the government to come up with any major new stimulus, either during the leadership transition or after, unless the economy takes a turn for the much worse," said UBS economist Tao Wang in a report.

Why the iPad mini? One word: Textbooks | TUAW - The Unofficial ...

I was at the dentist the other day, where I was talking to Laura-the-receptionist about tablets. "I'm sick of paying for rebinding [my kids' textbooks] every year," she told me. "My kid's teacher suggested we buy a tablet and purchase textbooks from Amazon instead of fixing them. Which tablet should I buy?"

Although schools pay a nominal fee per rebinding, parents often have to cough up a significant amount more. Cherry Creek High School charges $28 to rebind a single book. The eBook text costs just $14.99. It's a bargain until you start considering the tablet overhead.

The base Kindle sells for $70; the Fire for $200 -- although you can now buy used models for significantly less. The base iPad 2 starts at $399 and refurbished units are scarce on the ground at the online Apple Store. The Apple experience, it's clear, comes at a premium.

Although the Fire represents an outlay of nearly 3x more than the Kindle, many parents like the idea that their kid can surf the web, read email, and even run graphing calculator apps. As a point of reference, the TI NSpire sells for "just" $150 on Amazon (MSRP is $175.)

iPads are even more desirable, with their well-designed interface, expansive app store and broad support ecosystem. But they fail to compete on the basis of their price tag compared to a base Kindle + a TI calculator.

Between text books, research-related web access, calculator features, and e-mail contact with teachers, more parents than ever are on the hunt for inexpensive tablets, with the emphasis on inexpensive.

So why go tablet? Apple laid out many of the reasons in its education event early this year. The iPad, as Apple reminded us, communicates with the world. Apple has built an education business based on "teaching, learning, and student achievement" with over 20,000 iPad apps specific to education.

Apple's education-centric iBooks Author initiative focused on recreating the textbook. It attempted to engage students and expand the learning experience. The problem with that initiative is that Apple's bottom-line hardware starts at a price that's double that of the competition.

To make the iPad a real choice in the education marketplace, Apple needs an entry that competes with the bargain-basement tablets. iPads may be on every teen's Christmas wishlist, but parents are hard-pressed not to compare bottom lines.

That's why there's going to be the iPad mini. On October 23, Apple will likely launch a scaled-down iPad with basic features and a consumer-ready price. This is the event that parents like Laura have been waiting for.

For many, the iPad mini means that Apple will be a choice in a market where formerly parents might have felt priced out of buying. A smaller screen size and fewer options may allow students and their parents -- whether middle school, high school, or college -- to buy into the Apple ecosystem, where they formerly could not.

In the end, Apple's entire drive towards re-inventing the textbook doesn't matter if there aren't enough eyeballs and fingers to appreciate those titles with their rich tapestry of interactive design. An iPad mini will open the education market to a much broader range of customers and allow Apple to grow a customer base by investing in the future.

Obama plans more assertive debate, cites great' prep

WILLIAMSBURG, Virginia (Reuters) - President Barack Obama said on Sunday his debate preparation was "going great" and aides said the Democrat would be more aggressive in his next face off with Mitt Romney after their last encounter gave the Republican challenger a boost.

Since that first debate in Denver on October 3, polls indicate Romney has erased Obama's lead heading into the November 6 election. Obama and Romney debate again on Tuesday at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York. The third and final presidential debate will take place on October 22 in Florida.

Obama is spending the days ahead of the second debate at a resort in Williamsburg, Virginia, a battleground state that both candidates want to win in order to be victorious on November 6.

During a quick stop at a local campaign office, where he delivered pizzas to volunteers and called supporters by phone, Obama had an enthusiastic take on his practice sessions.

"It is going great," Obama told reporters.

Before his debate in Denver, Obama held a similar "debate camp" in the swing state of Nevada. During a visit to a campaign office there, he called the practice sessions "a drag."

That attitude may have shown through on stage. His performance was widely panned as passive, and Romney's energetic showing gave his campaign a significant lift.

"The president is his own harshest critic and he knows Mitt Romney had a better night at the first debate," campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki said on Sunday.

"The American people should expect to see a much more energized President Obama making a passionate case for why he is a better choice for the middle class."

Obama started debate preparation around 10 a.m. on Sunday before breaking for the campaign office stop. He joked with volunteers that he was able to use the traditional landline phones because he had them at home.

"We actually still have old style phones...at the White House," he said.

SHOWDOWN

On Sunday's talk shows, Obama's advisers said he was preparing for a stepped-up performance, but the Romney team sounded unimpressed.

"Well, the president can change his style. He can change his tactics. He can't change his record. And he can't change his policies. And that's what this election is about," Romney campaign adviser Ed Gillespie told CNN.

"I think the race is very close. I think the wind is at Governor Romney's back, and there's clearly momentum. You can see it on the trail, you can see it in the data," Gillespie said in a separate appearance on "Fox News Sunday."

In contrast to Obama's listless debate performance, Vice President Joe Biden was far more assertive in his debate on Thursday night with Romney's running mate Paul Ryan in Danville, Kentucky.

The next presidential debate is a "town hall" format, allowing audience members to pose questions. CNN anchor Candy Crowley will moderate the debate.

Former White House communications director Anita Dunn, a longtime Obama adviser, was playing the role of Crowley in the president's mock sessions, a campaign aide said.

Obama's chief campaign strategist David Axelrod told the "Fox News Sunday" program the president would be aggressive in making his case on Tuesday.

"But the other thing he's going to certainly do - I mean, we saw Governor Romney sort of serially walk away from his own proposals - certainly the president is going to be willing to challenge him on it as we saw the vice president challenge Paul Ryan," Axelrod said.
