Strong energy, miners lead UK stocks higher

Britain's top share index pushed higher on Tuesday, tracking

gains on Wall Street and in Asia as investors turned more

positively on the outlook for equities following recent

better-than-expected U.S. corporate results and macroeconomic

data.

Gains by heavyweight energy, mining, and banking stocks

provided the main strength for the blue chips as investors'

appetite for riskier assets continued to improve.

At 0710 GMT, the FTSE 100 index was up 27.04 points,

or 0.5 percent at 5,832.65, having ended 0.2 percent higher on

Monday.

But although there seemed to be more optimism on the outlook

for third-quarter earnings and global growth, there remained

pockets of caution.

GKN was the biggest blue chip faller, shedding 2.5

percent as the car and plane parts maker GKN said a sluggish

European automotive market weighed on third quarter profit and

that a continued slump could impact the group for the remainder

of the year.

Drugs, Firearms Found on Trains from Pakistan to India Despite Crackdown

Frequent seizures of heroin, arms and ammunition, and fake currency from goods train as well as Samjhauta Express coming from Pakistan have thrown up serious security challenges for India. Despite regular protest letters from India and meetings of customs officials of both sides, things haven't changed but only gone bad.

The recent seizure of 105-kg heroin has baffled the security agencies. Not only heroin, many a time, the customs and other agencies have seized firearms and ammunition and even the fake currency in big numbers.

Since past sometime, both India and Pakistani customs officials have started to hold meetings with each other to discuss key issues, including smuggling.

In the seven meetings till now, every time Pakistan assured of adopting a strict stance, news of consignment being found from the goods train or Samjhauta Express coming from Pakistan followed.

Perturbed with the recoveries, traders had stopped cement import for 25 days a couple of months ago. Though the import started after an assurance of a strict vigil, nothing has changed. Earlier, the drug consignments were hidden under the goods train, but now the recent three seizures have shown that that the drug was placed inside the wagon.

Now the Indian Customs had taken up the issue with the union finance ministry and apprised them of the situation.

Deputy commissioner (customs) Vijay Bahadur Singh said, "We are keeping a close eye on goods train coming from Pakistan. We were always alert; but after the seizure of 105-kg heroin, we have further stepped up the checking."

He further said the department had taken up with the railways about sprucing up the facilities at the rail cargo and also time that train takes between Attari and the Amritsar station. "Talks are on in this regard at a higher level," he added.

Recent seizures
October 8: 105-kg heroin, 500 cartridges (goods train)
July 16: 7-kg heroin (goods train)
June 2: 5-kg heroin (goods train)
May 26: 10-kg heroin, Rs. 15.83 lakh (a bag was found near the rail track)
May 19, 2011: Two pistols, 3 magazines, 50 cartridges (goods train)
August 2010: 1-kg heroin, Rs. 9.5-kg heroin (goods train)
January 2009: 14.3-kg heroin (Samjhauta Express)
May 2009: Rs. 10-lakh fake currency (Samjhauta Express)
?
No scanners at ICP
The Indian government has spent more than Rs. 100 crore to erect a new integrated check post with all modern facilities but as far as the security is concerned, truck scanners are still not installed.

Despite then home minister P Chidambaram's assurance in April that truck scanners would be installed soon, import coming from Pakistan in trucks is being checked manually.
?
Rail cargo in a mess
At the Amritsar rail cargo, trains coming from Pakistan halt and goods are unloaded. The facilities at rail cargo do not meet the required standards. Besides, basic facilities are absent and security is always under question. Fences are broken from various places, sheds are leaking, goods are stored in open at times and there is hardly a check on the entrants.

The customs department claims that it has written to the railways many times to upgrade the facility but nothing has happened. Even the local traders have taken up the issue with authorities, but without success.

Todd Akin Gets Boost from Reality TV?s Duggar Family

The Duggar family of Arkansas will campaign for Rep. Todd Akin in Missouri. The popular reality television family famous for having 19 children will stump for the embattled conservative Republican in southern Missouri on Tuesday and Wednesday. The move tries to get Christian voters on board for Akin's fight against Democratic incumbent Sen. Claire McCaskill.

    * The Washington Times reports the family met Akin at a Patriot Day rally. Jim Bob Duggar , the family patriarch, told the news media outlet, "Todd Akin is a true-blood conservative. He's somebody we believe in."

    * Akin and the Duggar family have homeschooling in common. Both families educated children at home, away from public and private schools. The Duggar family is deeply Christian and espouse their conservative values regularly on their reality show.

    * Duggar believes Missouri is a key state for Republicans to win. He also told the Times that GOP supporters "need to give money directly to the candidate."

    * The first stop for the Duggar family is a women's lunch rally beginning at noon Tuesday in Springfield, Mo. Michelle Duggar, the mother of 19 children, will appear alongside Janet Huckabee, wife of former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee. Admission is $20.

    * A rally will be held at 5 p.m. Tuesday in Osage Beach, Mo., at the Main Street Music Hall. As with many appearances for the Duggar clan, some of the children will play music while Akin rallies supporters.

    * On Wednesday, the Duggar family is in Farmington, Mo., at the Farmington Civic Center beginning at 12:15 p.m. Another rally will be held later in the day in Poplar Bluff at 6:30 p.m.

    * Akin participated in a forum in Kansas City on Saturday to preview the coming week of campaign stops with the Duggars. The Kansas City Star reports Akin was a keynote speaker at a forum called "Bringing America Back to God."

    * The forum was held at Kansas City's National World War I Museum and around 60 people attended for $20 each. The Star reveals Akin said at the gathering, "God himself granted us life and liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Those things don't come from the Supreme Court, nor the president, nor Congress. Those things come directly from God."

    * Akin was not allowed to make a campaign speech at the forum. However, the Star reports the candidate alluded to his election fight by saying, "Count me on the right side."

    * Later on Saturday, Akin reiterated his belief in God at a campaign stop in Sedalia. The Sedalia Democrat reports Akin told locals at a rally, "This is a very unique country, but we are unique because ... God himself blessed us with life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."

    * Jim Bob Duggar was once a politician himself and campaigning for Akin is a natural fit. The Duggar patriarch served in the Arkansas House of Representatives from 1999 to 2003 and ran for U.S. Senate in 2002.

PFT: Lions, not Eagles, overcome mistakes to win

    Robert Griffin IIIAP

The Vikings proved they were mortal, Robert Griffin III proved he had no complications from last week?s concussion, and the Redskins proved they could win at home.

An early interception was nearly the only mistake Griffin made, leading the Redskins to a 38-26 win over the Vikings, snapping an eight-game home losing streak that dated back to September 2011 and pushing them to 3-3.

Griffin finished the game in style, turning a four-minute offense scramble into a 76-yard touchdown, capping a brilliant final three quarters.

He finished the game with 13 carries for 138 yards and two touchdowns, with another 182 passing yards and a score.

For the Vikings (4-2), the problem was clear. Their first four trips to the red zone yielded four Blair Walsh field goals, and their defense had no answers for Griffin once the first quarter ended.

There was a moment when Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder looked nothing like the efficient guy who didn?t throw a single pick in the first four games. He now has four in the last two games, including one Sunday returned for a touchdown by Madieu Williams, and one in the last minute which didn?t matter all that much.

But after the pick-six, he responded with a pair of touchdown drives, giving the Vikings a shot after they trailed by 19.

Percy Harvin was brilliant (11 catches for 133 yards) and Adrian Peterson was good (17 carries for 79 yards).

But in the end, Griffin was back, and he was the difference.

24-mile skydive a boon for YouTube, social media

Felix Baumgartner's 24-mile skydive from the stratosphere on Sunday was a boon for social networks as millions of users shared in the wonder of the moment from their computers, tablets and phones.

Here's a look at how the world, through the Internet, watched the jump.

    YOUTUBE:

As Baumgartner ascended in the balloon, so did the number of viewers watching YouTube's live stream of the event. Its popularity grew as the moment of the jump drew closer, as people kept sharing links on Twitter and Facebook and websites embedded the stream. YouTube officials said Baumgartner's jump set a record prompting 8 million concurrent streams.

In the United States, the opportunity to watch the jump on TV was limited to the Discovery Channel, though more than 40 television networks in 50 total countries carried the lived feed, organizers said. It was streamed by more than 130 digital outlets.

    FACEBOOK:

After Baumgartner landed, sponsor Red Bull posted a picture of the daredevil on his knees to Facebook. In less than 40 minutes, the picture was shared more than 29,000 times and generated nearly 216,000 likes and more than 10,000 comments. Immediately after the jump, Red Bull solicited questions for Baumgartner through Facebook and Twitter, promising to answer three at a post-jump news conference.

    TWITTER:

During the jump and the moments after Baumgartner safely landed, half the worldwide trending topics on Twitter had something to do with the jump ? pushing past tweets about Justin Bieber and seven NFL football games being played at the same time. Celebrities of all kinds weighed in, including athletes, actors and high-profile corporate executives.

"It's pretty amazing that I can watch, live on my computer, a man riding a balloon to the edge of space so he can jump out of it. (hashtag)TheFuture," tweeted Wil Wheaton, who acted in the iconic science-fiction series "Star Trek: The Next Generation."

"Felix Baumgartner is a boss," tweeted Jozy Altidore, a soccer player for the U.S. men's national team.

    REDDIT:

Two threads related to the jump made the front page of Reddit. Users quickly upvoted a request for Baumgartner to participate in an "Ask Me Anything" on the site, where users pepper someone on the site with questions about anything they want. President Barack Obama held court as the subject of a similar thread in August.

Nearly 29,000 users weighed in on a separate thread about the jump itself, voting it up and down and robustly commenting.

Hack a Putty Knife Into a Vegetable Peeler That Also Slices Potato Chips [Kitchen Hacks]

Hack a Putty Knife Into a Vegetable Peeler That Also Slices Potato ChipsIf you've cut your finger with traditional vegetable peelers over the years you may want to invest a few minutes and a new putty knife into making a hand peeler where the peeler strikes the product and not vice-versa which means there is less chance of cutting yourself.

Instructables user bartolo gives simple instructions on how to make the transformation?draw a wide U-section on the blade of the putty knife, cut it out with a rotary tool cutting wheel, fold down the cutting edge a bit with pliers, and sharpen the cutting edge with the rotary tool.

The resulting tool not only peels vegetables with ease but can also make thin slices for potato chips and carrot or cheese slices for salads. As long as you take care when modifying and sharpening the tool you should have much less of cutting yourself when using the finished putty peeler.

    95% Searching for Sugar Man

    All Critics (96) | Top Critics (28) | Fresh (91) | Rotten (5)

The search for a long-lost pop icon has an unexpected payoff.

    [A] moving, lyrical account ...

Director Malik Bendjelloul's engaging, cleverly structured documentary about the legendary folk singer Rodriguez is shaped like a mystery.

If you like music, a good mystery or, better yet, a combination of both, you won't be disappointed.

An electrifying illustration of music's power to inspire and change lives on both sides of the footlights.

Submitted for your approval: one Sixto Rodriguez, a Mexican-American singer/songwriter whom Rod Serling would surely embrace, in or out of the Twilight Zone.

There's a fascinating story in the rise and fall of singer-songwriter Sixto Rodriguez, "the Latin Bob Dylan," and it's too bad that the documentary "Searching for Sugar Man" doesn't tell enough of it.

A soulful, lip-tremblingly joyous movie that's one of the more affecting experiences I've had in a cinema this year.

Engrossing even when it's a little unfocused.

One of the most bizarre pop music documentaries ever...a singularly fascinating true-life tale that many of its participants still find difficult to believe.

...it isn't merely the content that makes Searching for Sugar Man so affecting: it's the way that Swedish filmmaker Malik Bendjelloul sets up the story and peels away the mystery of Rodriguez, one layer at time.

A mystery as compelling as any fictional detective story.

The first half of this film is mysterious whereas the second half is wonderfully inspiring. It's proof that truth really is stranger than fiction.

This is a fine documentary; insightful and entertaining with a genteel approach to uncovering a figure so close to the hearts of an unexpected fan base.

A celebration of an artist and the power of art to transcend time and place

Much credit to director Malik Bendjelloul for surprising this cynical and desensitised film watcher.

For those familiar with the story of Rodriguez, this engaging documentary on his substantial success in South Africa will prove both illuminating and bemusing.

I was instantly hooked by this unique documentary...If you are a traveller on the road of life, don't miss this unforgettable treasure of a film

This is not only the best documentary I've seen this year, it's one that shows other documentaries how to do it.

Searching for Sugar Man reminds us that a wise man knows lasting riches are never the result of record sales.

Searching for Sugar Man" is a saga about the power of music, living life on one's own terms and the joy of second chances.

Two fans, Stephen Segerman and Craig Bertholomew, made it their business to find out exactly what happened to the singer Rodriguez. And, "Searching for Sugar Man" is the fruits of their labor. The fruit is tasting pretty sweet.

It starts as a bittersweet parable about the cruelty of commerce, but the wonder of "Searching for Sugar Man" will not soon slip away.

Great Ideas On Dorm Room Decoration : Home Improvement

You are here: Home / General / Great Ideas On Dorm Room Decoration

One of the best things you can do in the beginning to feel more comfortable in your surroundings is to make your dorm room feel more like home. The dorm room is where students spend most of their time outside of class. Decorations will help make your place more comfortable and will let students feel at home even if their hometowns are miles away. One can also visit http://www.reidtechnology.co.nz/ for the related information.

Walls are one area of the room where students can do a lot of things to please the eyes or even make over the entire room. While painting and wallpaper aren?t usually allowed in dorm rooms or rentals, you can put up things like mosaic pictures, picture frames, and movie or music posters to help make the space more your own. Check the homestoreonline for more home decoration materials.

A mirror is another great choice because you don?t have to wait for the bathroom and it also has the effect of making the room seem bigger. Any wall hanging is a clever way to cover dirty spots or holes on the walls. Another idea is a cork board or white board. Having cork boards or white boards are helpful to remind students about schedules and project deadlines but they are also great ways to express yourself with photos of friends and fun times.

Multi-purpose decorations are also great. Items that are useful for more than one purpose help you save a lot of space. One example is a multi-purpose table where you can either eat your meal or study at night. Bonus points if it has drawers or a shelf underneath for storing your belongings. Another useful piece is a small plastic filing cabinet or box where you can put your books or video game or CDs. Some of these even lock if you have some private or valuable possessions that you don?t want subjected to your roommate?s prying eyes.

What?s more, a curtain is another item which is a must-have in every dorm room. It?ll help manipulate the light entering your room. College students often have erratic schedules. If you need to take a nap during the day or plan to sleep in after a long night out, you?ll want to block the sun?s rays from entering your room and disturbing your slumber. You can find many decorative items that match your d?cor and this is something that even the most different of roommates can reach an agreement about. For more tips on home decoration, you can click here.
