Considering Ultima Online was, and will be until Ultima Forever sees the light, a subscription-based online game, it's quite the statement to make. But Koster had an anecdotal--and, judging from the lack of resistance by co-panelists Rich Vogel Starr Long, and accurate--explanation. His argument lies in a bug within the early days of Ultima Online: rares.
Flashing way back to 1997, rares were items that appeared to due server glitches in the game, Koster said during his panel. As soon as a server maintenance period was over, artifacts were created in the game world, such as blocks of water that players were able to pick up and place into their bags, for instance. Given the classic laws of supply and demand, these items were highly sought after.
Hey, if you were a denizen of Felucca or Trammel and you could get your hands on a chunk of water that you could fish from within your backpack, you'd want a piece of that too. Koster then went into the fact that a sort of meta-economy sprouted up around these rare items through eBay. By extension, similar things happened around the Asian communities based around the MMO that were unbeknown to Koster at the time.
Paraphrasing from Koster's summary, companies like Nexon in Korea formed soon after, looking to offer such "rare" in-game items to players directly, cutting out the middle men like eBay and similar e-commerce services. Thus, the free-to-play games market was born. The Asian gaming market had quite a time with free-to-play games, with releases like MapleStory and Ragnorok Online acting as poster children for the free-to-play scene in Asia.
So, do Facebook game giants like Zynga and Wooga have Ultima Online to thank for their existence? It's certainly possible. I could easily argue that social games would have never happened if Asian gamers in the late '90s didn't latch onto Ultima Online and its rares-creating bug, which arguably helped birth companies like Nexon that encroached on the West.
But if you ask one of the mighty minds behind one of the greatest , forward-thinking online games ever created, Ultima Online at least sparked the number one trend in gaming today. And for that, Origin Systems, we thank you.
Do you believe that Ultima Online is partly responsible for the social games revolution? If not, what or who is? Sound off in the comments. Add Comment.

Q: Can a Realtor fill out the documents to add a name to a deed or does it have to be done by an attorney? We purchased the home in my name and credit score only, about nine years ago. We want to possibly try to refinance the property in his name through the VA. This may be redundant since we?re somewhat under water on the original mortgage. I?ve heard that I can fill out the paperwork by myself, but prefer to have a professional handle it. Thanks for your attention.

A: In most states, there is more than ?paperwork? involved in transferring title to real estate. You would need to use an approved form of deed, it would need to be recorded and there might be a tax payments required (although usually a transfer to a spouse is not taxable). This would not be something a real estate agent would want to take on. Also, you might want to remain an owner for other reasons. Best of luck!

APThrough a string of recent comeback attempts that didn?t pay off, Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning kept talking about working through the adversity.
The work paid off Monday, as the Broncos took advantage of a hailstorm of turnovers by the Chargers to score 35 unanswered points in the second half for a huge win.
According to Mike Klis of the Denver Post, it was Manning?s 47th game winning drive in the fourth quarter, tying him with Dan Marino for most in NFL history.
?I?ve been a part of some comebacks and you have to have all three phases contribute,? Manning said. ?You?ve got to have a tipped ball or a bounce go your way.?
The Broncos got some breaks, with fumbles and interceptions returned for touchdowns. But this was about Manning too, after he went 24-of-30 passing for 309 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. But you couldn?t tell it from his muted reaction, which amazed teammates.
?I?ve never been part of a comeback like that,? tight end Joel Dreessen said. ?Peyton, that guy is so humble. I tried to get him fired up about this. I was shaking him, and saying, ?What do you think about this, man??
?All he said was, ?Good job. Good job.? ?
Those who?ve known him longer aren?t surprised. Wide receiver Brandon Stokley, whose touchdown gave then the lead for good, said he?s come to expect such things.
?You never can count that guy out,? Stokley said. ?I?ve seen it too many times. Everybody in this locker room knows, and we all believe, that when you have him behind the center we can come back from any deficit.?
It helps when the Chargers make it easy, but that shouldn?t take away from Manning?s role in it either.

Carp fishing is a fun and challenging sport. Because the?carp fish?can grow into giants, it can be satisfying to catch one. The sport has always been popular in some places in Europe, particularly in the United Kingdom. In many states in the Unites States, local anglers are also enjoying catching these non-native fish. If you want to go to a?carp fishing?escapade, make sure that you bring two types of things: your personal needs and your angling needs.
Things to bring for comfort:
Your fishing outfit is something you should really think about. There are some outfits though that you must consider depending on some factors like the weather conditions. If the area where you will fish has strong wind, you may want to bring a windbreaker. If the weather forecast suggests rain, bring extra clothes and specialized clothing for rain.
Another thing to bring for comfort is food. For the trip to be fun, you must have plenty of food. You may bring alcoholic beverages but you must drink moderately to avoid accidents.? Don?t bring hard drinks just to be safe.
Overnight equipments such as tents and sleeping bags are also important if you are planning to camp out. There are some fishing spots around Europe where there are hotels or cabins nearby if you prefer to stay indoors. Make sure to make a reservation weeks or months before the trip.
The fishing gear
Bring your own?carp rigs?so that you will be able to make adjustments on it unlike with rented tackles. If you don?t have a tackle, you could either buy one or find a place where they do rent tackles.
Baits and carp rigs are also essential. Baits and rigs come in many shapes and sizes. Use multiple types of bait to test out which ones are more effective in attracting carps. For beginners, boilies are usually the bait of choice. You may also bring homemade baits if you feel like experimenting. Just have some extra commercial bait just to be safe.
Together with the usual tackle also bring tools that will keep the fish safe such as unhooking mats and nets if you are going to fish in a catch and release lake or river.

High-tech battery-maker A123 Systems, which under Obama got $250 million in federal energy grants, filed for bankruptcy Tuesday. Mitt Romney may look to capitalize in future presidential debates, but he'll need to tread carefully.
A123 Systems Inc. President and CEO David Vieau is shown after a 2009 news conference in Livonia, Mich. On Oct. 16, 2012, the Waltham, Mass.-based maker of advanced car batteries announced it was filing for bankruptcy and was selling its assets to Johnson Controls.

EnlargeAnother failed piece of the Obama administration's renewable energy plan ? Massachusetts battery-maker A123 Systems, which just filed for bankruptcy ? could come up in Tuesday night's presidential debate, and if it does, here's the skinny on what happened and what it means.

Until Monday, A123 Systems made lithium-ion batteries for next-generation plug-in hybrid and all-electric battery-powered cars. It built a factory in Livonia, Mich., with about $250 million in federal grants, expecting to create 38,000 jobs. Now the company is closing its doors. (Its aim, however, is to sell its factory and many key assets to another US battery maker, Johnson Controls, which could yet continue making batteries there.)
At Tuesday's debate, "I fully expect the Romney campaign will try to cite another business bankruptcy and the economic investment of the recovery plan as a failure," says David Foster, executive director of the BlueGreen Alliance, a collaboration of unions and environmentalists promoting green jobs.
Mr. Romney could, indeed. A123's bankruptcy filing seems a ready-made sound bite for Romney to highlight President Obama's role in promoting green-energy companies that later flopped. But there's also reason to believe it might also lead to some snarling over Romney's investing record, too.
At a 2010 event, Mr. Obama spoke by phone hookup with workers and managers at the plant, touting the federal grant that helped build the plant.
Over the weekend I followed a march to Waziristan. Not in person, unfortunately. Instead I followed the historic anti-drones peace march all the way from Islamabad to Waziristan and back again...via Twitter.
On Saturday morning Reprieve's Director Clive Stafford Smith sent me the first of 182 text messages. Bit-by-bit, over the following two days, I posted these messages on Twitter to the organisation's 9000+ 'followers'.
After months of complicated preparation, Clive's first text was jubilant: "Massive crowds huge media discourse project already a success." Punctuation, it seemed, was a luxury to be jettisoned in favour of expediency. I typed it up and we were off.
Quickly I was hooked: to my phone as the messages from Clive flooded through, and to Twitter as I watched the same messages reverberate around the universe, sometimes to hundreds of thousands of people (via Imran Khan's retweets) and sometimes just to tens of people (via retweets from my personal account).
I followed as the march made its way through Talagang...buzz..."Hard to get through this small town as the goodwill among locals for our solidarity is astounding"...then wound slowly to Dhulli...buzz..."more loud cheers and trumpets. Poverty all around now donkeys rest in the midday head the cost of a hell fire missile could do much good here"... and on the way to DI Khan...buzz..."Biggest crowd yet but speeches over back on road to di khan. News of car bomb in peshawar far away but sad."
Twitter works in the same way as most other things in life. The more you give out, the more you get back. As an ever-greater number of Clive's messages flew out into the ether, and as news of the march spread across the wider media, I sat and watched people's reactions streaming onto the screen in front of me. It was extremely - and somewhat surprisingly - moving.
"@ReprieveUK we appreciate your efforts", said one person, "@ReprieveUK thank you for being a part of Imran Khan's rally. Deep respect for you guys" said another. "@ReprieveUK from being Pakistani I am really thankful to you people you came so far for us really admiring thanks."
As I watched the reaction online, Clive watched it along the roadside in Pakistan...buzz..."Sign: We believe in Islam Pakistan warmly welcomes foreigners participating in this sacred act saving bloodshed."
Those on the march were several hours ahead of the UK so while they ate dinner in DI Khan... buzz..."Now eating buffalo quail at dinner several years in purgatory for me..." and then went to sleep, I made my way to West London for Pizza.
6am on Sunday morning and the text messages from Clive began flooding my inbox once more. We were off again...buzz..."Yes there are threats in the air but we all hope it will be safe and locals so grateful we care."
News of the march had spread overnight and the Reprieve account had amassed several hundred new Twitter followers - our own little virtual anti-drones peace march. We were all thousands of miles apart, but completely connected. As Clive neared Tunk, Pakistan, he sent word saying he was missing his son - who had just text messaged him en route from Dorset to the London Science Museum. I Tweeted this while visiting my sister in Brighton, and watched as it was reTweeted by people as far and wide as the US and across Pakistan.
The march continued, the messages continued...buzz..."Hard for us to get to Tank ourselves there are so many people here"...buzz..."Nobody noticed but we already passed where we were going to be stopped"...buzz... "ISI Agent says Tank attack threat was fake".
There were moments of humour...buzz..."Gosh that was the hardest fought trip to the toilet ever IK and I had to get through a crowd rougher than the Kop"...and the inevitable organisational tribulations that come with such an ambitious project...buzz... "Just need to set up sound system first...Ooops! Sound system way back in the convoy how will it get through?"
Following the march virtually on Twitter rather than literally in a Corolla was striking in its symbolism. Such interconnectedness was, after all, the whole point of the anti-drones march. As we are all constantly reminded: the world is more connected than ever. People in the West may be thousands of miles apart, of different religions, and ethnicities, and political allegiances to those in Waziristan, but as always there is far more that unites us than divides us.
A US operator at Creech airforce base in Nevada can press some buttons and send a drone to the other side of the world to kill people. The US would like this inconvenient truth to be kept secret. Unfortunately for them, advances in technology which allow unmanned vehicles to terrorise an entire population in the so-called 'war on terror' also mean that now the rest of the world can watch while they do it.
Waziristan is pretty inaccessible. Yet on the 6th and 7th of October, 2012, a convoy 9 miles long composed of brave activists made their way towards the region to draw attention to the plight of those who live there; of those who can not turn around and leave.
Local people, international journalists, lawyers, and activists accompanied the march. Clive was one person sending technologically humble text messages through to one other person. But via laptops and smart phones from London to the USA, to Pakistan and back again, thousands upon thousands of people followed their progress spreading the message of the march loud and clear: no more lethal drones.
