Writer Hunting for Viewers with MTV's Teen Wolf - VFS Blog

Teen Wolf?has been something of a breakout hit since debuting on MTV in the summer of 2011. Based on the 1985 film, the show premiered to good critical response and steadily growing ratings, capturing a key female demographic for the network. Season two ran this past summer, and season three is already on the horizon for 2013.

Film Production?alum?Angela Harvey?isn?t the first alum of the program to begin a writing career but she?s one of the latest. Although screenwriting isn?t one of the key disciplines in the VFS Film curriculum, storytelling and script development are still big parts of what makes the program tick.

Angela, whose affinity for the craft goes back years, has been on Teen Wolf?since nearly the beginning, first as an assistant and now, for season three, as a staff writer. She was the writer assigned to the Teen Wolf: The Hunt, a game that ran on Facebook throughout season two. The response to the interactive ?two-screen? component was huge. Consider this:?An MTV rep told Mashable this summer that ?the success of the game, along with the show?s ratings, has ?definitely played a role? in Teen Wolf getting renewed for a third season.?

We caught up with Angela, now based in LA and a staff writer on the show, to hear more about her path to Teen Wolf and, especially, her role in shaping The Hunt.

Hi, Angela! Tell us the story of how you came to be working on Teen Wolf. You?ve been on the show since season one, right?

Angela:?I got on the show when season one was in prep. It was pretty random, actually. After VFS, I moved back to Atlanta, where there is fortunately a lot of production happening. After a while, I landed a job as an office PA on the action-comedy Killers. I became good friends with the production secretary on that movie and we stayed in touch after wrap.

Several months later, she called me to see if I wanted to take over her job as assistant to a producer at Tyler Perry Studios. I interviewed with that producer and got the job. While we were wrapping up the Tyler Perry movie, [the producer] was also gearing up to produce the first season of Teen Wolf. I continued with him as his assistant for seasons one and two of Teen Wolf before getting promoted to staff writer in season three. I was also writers? assistant for season two.

When we last spoke, you said that one of the things you liked about screenwriting was that ?writing is the foundation on which everything else is built.? And TV is definitely a writer?s medium. Did you imagine yourself working in TV or did it just work out that way?

Angela:?Looking back on the path that brought me here, I could say that I just ended up in television, but it doesn?t feel that way. Once I realized that writing for television was what I wanted, I went after it with all I had. Before I started working on Teen Wolf, I?d actually put writing itself on the back burner in terms of career options. I?ve always loved writing and I was still writing my own movie scripts with a mind to produce them. But somehow in my mind, it seemed more practical to pursue a career in producing than in writing. When I started working closely with a very talented and successful producer, I began to realize that I didn?t love the work of practical producing enough to throw myself into it whole-heartedly. What I really loved was writing and creative producing, and I needed to go for that.

It was during season one of Teen Wolf that I really started to understand the benefits of working in television. In television, the story can go into a much deeper level of nuance and detail than in film. The characters get a lot more time to grow and develop ? or devolve ? as necessary. And viewers really get a chance to enter the world that?s been created for them.

Before Teen Wolf, I knew in theory that television was a writer?s medium, but it wasn?t until I saw it unfold before me in real life that I truly got that. I learned a lot of it from watching Teen Wolf showrunner Jeff Davis. He?s an amazing visionary. And watching him guide his vision to life was incredible. Of course production is always a collaborative effort. But at the end of the day, a symphony is only as good as the conductor.

The Hunt was a huge success and part of that seems to be the integration, that it?s not just pop-up video style trivia or behind-the-scenes content. It doesn?t feel tacked on. It feels like it?s part of the world of the show. What went into creating that integration?

Angela:?I?m particularly proud of The Hunt! The concept itself was pretty groundbreaking. We were in the thick of production on season two when the network and Social Samba presented the idea to the show team.

Essentially, Teen Wolf: The Hunt is an app that?s run through Facebook. The viewers who want to participate log in through Facebook and then go into simulated instant message sessions where they interact with characters from the show. The concept was so new at the time, no one really had a clear definition or explanation for what the experience actually was. We left that initial meeting thinking of it as a game that viewers could play to enhance the content of the show.

Because the showrunner and the head writer were totally swamped with production by the time the idea for The Hunt was presented, I was tapped to tackle the new project. I had been in the writer?s room as an assistant when season two?s story was being broken, and Jeff had actually let me participate in that process. Because of that experience, I was intimately familiar with the show and I was able to craft a new but deeply intertwined story.

I had several meetings with the digital producer from MTV where we wrestled with the concept of what we were truly trying to create. It turned out that thinking of it as a game was actually very limiting for me as I was writing. In a game, the world is entirely self-contained and it?s the player?s job to figure out how to conquer that world. Usually the player is seen as some sort of intruder in a dangerous place. With a near-infinite series of choices to make and actions to take, the player tries to change that world in order to win the game. With Teen Wolf: The Hunt, the choices are very limited, there?s no world to conquer, and there?s really no way to ?win.?

When it finally clicked for me was when I stopped thinking of it as a literal game and started thinking about how to make the user feel like an unseen character in the show. My goal became to craft an experience that would make the users feel like their participation was directly connected to the narrative they saw on TV each week. Sometimes that meant getting a show character to open up a little more about their motivations in intimate conversation. Other times it meant giving the player a task within the experience that would seemingly change the course of the next episode to air. The fans really engaged with it and had a great time, so I feel like that strategy worked out really well for us.

Do you think that kind of social engagement with viewers is with us to stay?

Angela:?Absolutely. Fans take a much more active and personal role in the viewing experience now. They don?t just watch a show and then forget about it until it?s time to watch the next episode. They dissect it and re-shape it into elaborate fan fiction, creative videos, and intricate art work. They want to be heard and even to be treated as participants in the creative process. ?I think maybe these flexible interactive pieces in which fans can feel like real story participants could go a long way toward meeting those emerging needs.

What?s the status of season three?

Angela:?The writers? room is in full swing for season three and production is gearing up to begin before the end of the year. I?ll be writing episode five this season. As a staff writer now, I won?t necessarily be on set very often, which will be a very different experience for me. I?m not saying that I?m going to miss those long, cold overnight shoots in the woods. But really, I just might miss those long, cold overnight shoots in the woods. I see a few set-crashing experiences in my near future.

Thanks, Angela. Readers can check out The Hunt on the official Teen Wolf Facebook page. Want to know more about the show? Americans, roll on over to MTV.com, while viewers in Canada should check out the show?s section on MuchMusic.com.?

Sarah Harding Girls Alouds Sarah Harding in skin cancer scare

Girls Aloud?s Sarah Harding is reportedly in the grips of a skin cancer scare.

Harding had three potentially cancerous moles removed from her back last Wednesday (October 17) ? just two days before reuniting with Girls Aloud at a press conference in London.

According to The Sun, Harding will find out this week whether or not she has the disease, but doctors are said to be ?very hopeful? that they have removed the moles in time. Phew.

A source told The Sun that Harding is understandably ?stressing? about the situation:

??This is an incredibly stressful time for her. It?s early days and the doctors are very positive ? but the word ?cancer? is terrifying to hear and Sarah is naturally stressing about it.?

Harding?s band mates ? Cheryl Cole, Kimberley Walsh, Nadine Coyle and Nicola Roberts ? are fully supporting her during this tough time, the source added:

??The girls are completely behind her. Some of the fans have suggested she hasn?t been enthusiastic about the tour, but the girls have told her not to stress because she?ll only run herself down and make herself sick.?

We hope everything is okay, that way we can all get back to being super excited about Girls Aloud?s big return.

The band reunited in London on Friday (October 19) to announce a brand new greatest hits collection, Ten ? out November 26 ? and a 12-date arena tour in 2013.

The girls also unveiled the sassy official video for their comeback single, ?Something New. Check it out below!

(AP Photo/Ted S. Warren)

SEATTLE (AP) ? Michael Henrichsen has ideas about how he might celebrate his 26th birthday this week.

First, Billy Idol rolls up in a limo and tells him to hop in. There are women everywhere. And later, when the British rock icon takes the stage and rips into "Rebel Yell," bras start flying and 1,800 of his closest friends go wild.

Far-fetched? Maybe not. After a two-year campaign that was part resume stunt, part charity drive and part heartfelt effort to get his far-flung friends together for a great time, the irrepressible Seattle man has actually persuaded Idol to play his birthday party Friday night.

"This is surreal," Henrichsen says. "It should not be happening."

So why is it? In his bedroom, surrounded by Cyndi Lauper and Madonna records, a drumstick he picked up at an Idol show two years ago, and rock posters, Henrichsen explains:

In October 2010, he had just turned 24 and was having an early life crisis. Friends were getting married and moving away. He was working three jobs and making little progress paying off $40,000 in college loans.

Salvation came over the stereo at the Bellevue Square Mall's Billabong clothing store, where he worked. It was "White Wedding." Henrichsen turned to a coworker: "Wouldn't it be cool if we got Billy Idol to play at my birthday party?"

She laughed. He laughed. No way, right?

But he went home and thought about it. He loved the way Idol blended pop and rock. Idol seemed like a fun guy. Henrichsen loves other music from the '80s, but he couldn't see Prince or Duran Duran agreeing. Idol, who lives in Los Angeles, wouldn't even have to leave his time zone.

Scoring Idol could also be a major coup for his resume. Henrichsen isn't sure what he wants to do for a career ? something in entertainment or event planning or PR, maybe ? but he thought this could get it started.

"I'm like, how feasible is it?" he says. "I realized it would cost a lot of money, something I don't have, so that's where the creativity came into play. How do you network to convince Billy Idol that it would be a good idea for him to come play a show on a specific date in Seattle?"

The first step was getting a friend, Jim Stamper, to build him a website, www.playmybirthdaybillyidol.com . "I thought it was never gonna work," Stamper says.

The next step was to get people to look at the website. Henrichsen hauled a boom box through a deserted Pike Place Market at night, dancing as "Mony Mony" blared, then posted a video of it. He and friends held a banner over Interstate 5.

But the site didn't start getting much attention until he decided to collect some celebrity endorsements. Comedian Kevin Nealon came to town to do standup, and Henrichsen got him on a 12-second video, telling Idol, "You gotta come to Seattle next October to do ..."

"Michael," Henrichsen prompts.

"... Michael's birthday. It's gonna be awesome."

Endorsements from other B- and C-listers followed: musician Rick Springfield, former Seattle Mariner Jay Buhner, porn star Ron Jeremy. Hanging out at book signings and other celebrity appearances became a fourth job. Only Nikki Sixx from Motley Crue and comedian Tom Green turned him down.

Local media outlets started to notice. And the Google news alerts made their way to Idol's people. They called Henrichsen and told him the campaign was cool, but that they couldn't promise anything.

"When we first became aware of Michael's project we were inclined to see it as just another extreme idea from a well-meaning fan," said Idol's manager, Tony Dimitriades. "But as Michael's campaign continued, his persistence and resourcefulness won Billy over."

It took a while, though.

In the meantime Henrichsen, who sings, plays guitar and does a passable Idol impersonation, put together an '80s cover band, Nite Wave. They began playing a series of charity concerts dubbed Billy Idol Aid and raised more than $10,000 for the American Red Cross and Northwest Harvest, which supplies meals to food banks.

But when October 2011 came around, Idol didn't show. Instead, he sent a video, saying he was sorry he couldn't make it ? but there was always next year.

Though some friends and family were a bit tired of the project, Henrichsen decided to give it one more year. He had bimonthly chats with Idol's people to update them on his status. Eventually, the Showbox, a Seattle venue that hosted some of the Billy Idol Aid events, made an offer to host the event at its location south of downtown.

Finally, last August, Idol's people called from Japan, where he was touring, and said Idol was in, with his band. Henrichsen says he started screaming and running laps around the mall.

And when 900-plus people showed up for Billy Idol Aid IV, they were treated to an official video announcement from the man himself.

"The people of the world have spoken!" Idol thundered. "The dream will become reality ..."

"It's gonna be pretty much the coolest night ever," says Henrichsen, whose birthday was Monday. "We'll have as much fun as possible before we get to the 9-5 part of my life."

Breakfast Cookie Dough! - Chocolate Covered Katie

Cookie dough you eat for breakfast!

Good Monday morning.

Cookie dough for breakfast: finally, a reason to love Mondays.

Breakfast Cookie Dough!

When I was little, I saw commercials for a cereal called ?Cookie Crisps? that claimed to taste just like cookies for breakfast. Obviously my 7-year-old self begged and begged until my mom finally relented and bought it, cautioning me the entire time it wouldn?t really taste like cookies.

She was right, of course.

Cookie Crisps tasted not like cookies, but like a different c word: cardboard. (Sadly, I didn?t learn my lesson. The next year I made her buy Count Chocula, another cardboard-esque breakfast cereal.)

With today?s recipe,?you can?finally have a cereal that really does taste like chocolate-chip cookies and milk all blended together.

Cookie dough for breakfast!

Breakfast Cookie Dough

?

Breakfast Cookie Dough

(serves 1)

  • 1 cup flake cereal (bran flakes, cornflakes, spelt flakes, etc.) (35g)
  • 1/3 cup Mori-Nu tofu, or yogurt of choice (80g)
  • 3/4 cup milk of choice (180g)
  • 1/4 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • sweetener of choice (such as stevia, sugar, or even maple syrup)
  • handful of chocolate chips
  • optional:1 tbsp peanut butter, or 2 tsp?coconut or veg oil (or sub another nut butter for the peanut)

Blend together all ingredients, except chips. (I use a Magic Bullet.) Stir in chips. The cereal will have a thin consistency at first, but if you leave it in the fridge (after blending) for even just 10 minutes, it starts to get really thick. Good cold or hot.

Growing up, did you have a favorite breakfast cereal?

I took turns with Frosted Flakes, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Kix, and Life. But my all-time favorite was Apple Cinnamon Cheerios. When I was going through?a growth spurt in 7th grade, I?d routinely come home from school and polish off an entire box!

By the way, one of the Cookie Crisp slogans is, ?You can?t have cookies for breakfast, but you can have Cookie Crisp.? Ummm wait a second? who says you can?t have cookies for breakfast?!

Tats might present a professional stumbling block.

Although the U.S. corporate market has changed in many ways ? shifting from internal labor to outsourcing, extending more extreme dress code policies ? tattoos and piercings in the workplace seem to remain a divided issue. Forty percent of 26-40 year olds and 36% of 18-25 year olds have tattoos, and 22% of 26-40 year olds and 30% of 18-25 year olds have at least one body piercing, according to the Pew Research Center via Forbes Magazine.

There is no consensus among employers on how to address body modifications, according to Forbes. Most corporations and small businesses generally do not have formal policies against tattoos and piercings but this does not mean potential employees should not be careful about the placement of their body art, said Assistant Director of the Insalaco Center for Career Development Carolyn Yencharis Corcoran.

?Just like everything else with a job search, when you?re searching for a job, I want to say you want to go in with kind of a clean slate. So whatever environment you?re going into, you want to think about ?What is the uniform for that environment?? We always recommend in the Career Center, whenever we speak to students about appearance, we always recommend if you have any tattoos that are visible, cover them up, wear long sleeves. Or if you have a piercing on your face or an unusual piercing in your ear, take that out, and interview with the organizations. Let your experience be the thing that shines through. You don?t want to be judged by one tattoo.?

Freshman nursing major Kelsey Swoyer, sophomore English major Celsi Illiano, and senior communications major Matt Wiegopolski also believe tattoos and piercings can play a role in the kinds of jobs that can be available to people who flaunt their art.

?Tattoos and piercings can definitely affect your job placement,? said Illiano, who has a total of fifteen piercings including her rook, scaffold, tongue, lip and navel, as well as four tattoos. ?If you?re looking to go into a more professional field, you have to be very selective with your placement of your tattoos. All of mine you can?t show unless I?m making it known ? like if I?m wearing more provocative clothing, I should say, you can see my tattoos. And with my piercings, they?re all things that you can take out and you can?t see them. They?re more easily hidden. But if you?re going into more open industries like writing, or store management of clothing, or tattooing, or personal retail like items that you make yourself, you can be more expressionistic with your body.?

Wiegopolski, who has six tattoos including and a Freddy Kreuger portrait in progress on his ribs, has had many thoughts about the kinds of professions he believes would be accepting of body modifications.

?Obviously the white collar jobs are going to be more strict than blue collar. If you?re a maintenance man, I don?t think they?re going to say anything if you have tattoos but more professional-wise, like a teacher, you?re now in the public eye, or like high up in a business corporation. I don?t see, if you?re typing up articles for a newspaper, why you can?t have tattoos on your hands.?

Wiegopolski also remains mindful of his future and how certain placement decisions can limit his career choices. He said he needs to find a steady job before he would feel comfortable enough to expose his art or add another tattoo to his body. In the future he wants to cover himself in ink: he mentioned having ?sleeves? on his arms.

?I?m able to cover the tattoos I have now so it?s not like people are looking at me differently,? he said. ?I don?t get that honestly ? someone looking at you differently because you have tattoos.?

Swoyer, who has tattoos on her wrist, lip and back as well as dermal hip piercings, distinguishes the kinds of professionals that make her uncomfortable when they sport ink and piercings.

?If my mechanic has tattoos all over, I don?t really care. As long as you fix my car I don?t care. But if someone who?s taking my blood or putting something into my body and looks kind of sketchy, I don?t really want them to be doing that,? said Swoyer.

Corcoran said notions about tolerant professions can be inaccurate.

?It really depends on where you are, what type of organization you?re in, and what you?re doing. And, I think this comes back to that whole, obviously the culture in the organization,? said Corcoran. ?I mean, you may go into an advertising firm where you have all of these creative folks ? graphic designers and writers ? and maybe they don?t want you to show your tattoos and piercings because maybe they deal with high level corporate clients from Japan and Japan?s a very conservative country. So, I wouldn?t even say depending on the environment whether it?s creative or writing based compared to healthcare, it doesn?t matter. You really need to gauge the culture within the organization and what their attitude is about that.?

13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display unveiled

10 hrs.

Apple unveiled its smallest notebook that uses its highly regarded Retina display, a 13-inch MacBook Pro weighing "just over 3.5 pounds, almost a pound lighter than the previous generation," said Phil Schiller at the company's San Jose event Tuesday.

The laptop, available immediately, starts at $1,699 with a 2.5 GHz, dual-core Intel Core i5 processor, 8 GB RAM and 128 GB of flash storage; with?256GB of flash storage, it starts at $1,999.?

The regular 13-inch MacBook Pro, without a Retina display, starts at $1,199.?

Schiller said that Apple's best-selling notebook is the 13-inch MacBook Pro, "in fact it's our No. 1 selling Mac." The new model, with the Retina display is .75-inch thin, "a full one-fifth?thinner than the old model."

The display itself 2,560-by-1,600 pixels???"four times the number of pixels of the previous generation???that makes it the world's second-highest resolution notebook computer" he said, adding that "our 15-inch" MacBook Pro with Retina display "is the first."?

As NBC's Technology & Science editor Wilson Rothman?wrote, "Consider that the average HDTV has a 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution. This means that the new MacBook Pro has almost double the pixels of an HDTV."

The Retina display will bring a "29 percent higher contrast ratio, and a 75 percent reduction in reflection or glare," said Schiller,?Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing.

Apple calls its?Retina display by that name because its high resolution and pixel density of more than 300 pixels per inch creates a display so realistic that the human eye can't distinguish individual pixels at a normal viewing distance.?

The 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display was introduced in June.

The new 13-inch model has 7 hours of battery life, Schiller?said, and the new "Power Nap" feature lets the MacBook Pro with Retina display?do software updates when it's plugged in, as well as back up the computer using Time Machine.?
