Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) is no ordinary archeologist. When we first see him, he is somewhere in the Peruvian jungle in 1936, running a booby-trapped gauntlet (complete with an over-sized rolling boulder) to fetch a solid-gold idol. He loses this artifact to his chief rival, a French archeologist named Belloq (Paul Freeman), who then prepares to kill our hero. In the first of many serial-like escapes, Indy eludes Belloq by hopping into a convenient plane. So, then: is Indiana Jones afraid of anything? Yes, snakes. The next time we see Jones, he's a soft-spoken, bespectacled professor. He is then summoned from his ivy-covered environs by Marcus Brody (Denholm Elliott) to find the long-lost Ark of the Covenant. The Nazis, it seems, are already searching for the Ark, which the mystical-minded Hitler hopes to use to make his stormtroopers invincible. But to find the Ark, Indy must first secure a medallion kept under the protection of Indy's old friend Abner Ravenwood, whose daughter, Marion (Karen Allen), evidently has a "history" with Jones. Whatever their personal differences, Indy and Marion become partners in one action-packed adventure after another, ranging from wandering the snake pits of the Well of Souls to surviving the pyrotechnic unearthing of the sacred Ark. A joint project of Hollywood prodigies George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, with a script co-written by Lawrence Kasdan and Philip Kaufman, among others, Raiders of the Lost Ark is not so much a movie as a 115-minute thrill ride. Costing 22 million dollars (nearly three times the original estimate), Raiders of the Lost Ark reaped 200 million dollars during its first run. It was followed by Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1985) and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), as well as a short-lived TV-series "prequel." ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

African Union reinstates Mali ahead of military action

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - The African Union (AU) lifted Mali's suspension from the bloc on Wednesday, saying an African plan to intervene militarily to help the country claw back territory from Islamist militants would be ready within weeks.

The pan-African body also laid out a political road map which foresees elections in the beleaguered West African country by April even as it is still grappling with the fallout from a coup in March this year.

Armed Islamist groups control the northern two-thirds of Mali and have stirred global outrage by meting out executions and desecrating ancient religious sites under their own strict interpretation of sharia law. The United Nations says they have systematically violated human rights, particularly of women.

Mali's Foreign Minister Tieman Hubert Coulibaly told state-owned television late on Wednesday that he was "happy and satisfied" with the lifting of the suspension.

He said it was the result of Mali's "respect of signed agreements and the creation of a government of national union conforming to the demands of the international community."

It was not immediately clear, however, whether Mali had agreed to the AU's poll deadline. The government in Bamako does not have a seat at the AU's Peace and Security Council (PSC), which is comprised of a rotating body of members.

Nor was it clearly stated whether the vote would come before or after any military intervention against rebels in the north of the country where Bamako now has no control.

"We are working ... to finalize the joint planning for the early deployment of an African-led international military force to help Mali recover the occupied territories in the North," Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, chairwoman of the AU Commission, told ministers at the opening of Wednesday's PSC meeting.

"At the same time, we will leave the door of dialogue open to those Malian rebel groups willing to negotiate," she said.

When the meeting concluded, Ramtane Lamamra, the AU's peace and security commissioner, told reporters the council had voted to reinstate Mali.

The AU suspended Mali's membership days after mutinous soldiers staged a coup against then President Amadou Toumani Toure. In April, an interim president, Dioncounda Traore, was sworn in but there remain doubts about who really holds the reins of power even in the government-controlled south of Mali.

MILITARY CAPACITY DOUBTS

Mali remains crippled by twin crises. The leadership in Bamako is still divided after the coup and the north of the country is occupied by Islamic militants.

The proposed path to elections was part of a "strategic concept" endorsed by the council that outlined measures including defense and security reforms to help end the turmoil in Mali.

"The road map provides for elections to be held 12 months after the return to constitutional order, meaning April," Lamamra told Reuters after the meeting.

Before then, Lamamra said, Mali's authorities would have to come up with their own plan for holding elections.

The document said Mali's return to the AU fold would help establish an inclusive political authority.

Regional and international efforts to deal with the situation, which has created a safe haven for Islamists and international criminal gangs, have been hampered by divisions over how to help.

Foreign envoys have voiced concern that the AU's request for U.N. backing in June lacked the necessary details, while others have spoken of serious reservations about the ability of the ECOWAS regional grouping to tackle the northern Islamists anytime soon.

Some envoys predict it could be months before any military operation is put in motion.

Germany's Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said on Tuesday Europe must help restore security in Mali and could lend support through military training to an African-led mission.

D.C. sniper Malvo: I was sexually abused by my accomplice

By Ian Sager, TODAY

In an exclusive television interview with TODAY?s Matt Lauer, D.C. sniper Lee Boyd Malvo claims that he was sexually abused by John Allen Muhammad, the mastermind behind the sniper attacks that terrorized the nation?s capital in 2002.

Susan Walsh / AP file

Malvo (pictured above) tells Matt Lauer there are more victims than the ones he and sniper mastermind John Allen Muhammad had previously admitted to.

?For the entire period when I was almost 15 until I got arrested, I was sexually abused by John Muhammad,? Malvo said.

?I felt a sense of shame, and I just said, ?That's just something that I'd never tell anyone.? And to a certain extent, up until that point, I really couldn't handle it.?

It has been ten years since Malvo and Muhammad went on a rampage that killed 10 and wounded three. Muhammad was executed by lethal injection in 2009. Malvo, who is serving a life sentence at a southwest Virginia prison, said it took years for him to come to terms with the abuse.

?The main reason I'm coming forward now is because I am more mature. As far as the guilt that I carried around for several years, I dealt with that to a large extent for years. And now, I can handle this. In here, there's no therapy. Rehabilitation is just a word. In solitary confinement, in a cell by yourself, I am priest, doctor, therapist. So, it just worked out that?I just took it off piece by piece. That I could handle it.?

Malvo also told Lauer that there are victims of his shooting spree that have not been identified ? and that he has contacted the families of some of those victims.

?Without anyone contacting me two and a half years ago, I reached out and I did that. In five different instances in different states. But there was a point in time where psychologically, I couldn't handle it?I cannot afford to break down psychologically in here, because there will be no help,? Malvo explained.

See more from the interview Thursday, October 25 on TODAY.?

We will post an extended cut from Matt's interview with D.C. sniper Lee Boyd Malvo when available.?

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) -- An animal advocate has been named to the Nevada Wildlife Commission -- a board that critics say is unfairly stacked with hunters.

Karen Summers Layne is president of the Las Vegas Valley Humane Society. She was appointed to the nine-member policy board on Oct.3 by Gov. Brian Sandoval. Her appointment follows that of former Clark County Sheriff Bill Young in July.

Layne opposed establishing a black bear hunting season in Nevada two years ago and has worked on trapping regulations for the Mount Charleston region outside Las Vegas.

She holds a doctorate degree in public administration, and is retired from both UNLV and the Las Vegas Police Department, where she worked as planning director.

She becomes only the sixth woman to serve on the commission.

Dumb Bank Robber Returns to Scene of Crime, Says He Didn't Get Enough Money

You'd think this would be bank-robbing 101: If you get away with it, don't return to the scene of the crime. And definitely don't go back to the bank if you're going to complain that the money you just stole wasn't quite enough.

That's what Arthur Bundrage did in Syracuse, New York, on Monday, the Huffington Post tells us.

Bundrage went into a bank at around 9 a.m. and demanded the tellers give him $20,000. He left to count his cash but realized he had been shortchanged. So he did what any angry customer would do and marched right back to demand his cash.

He was knocking on the bank's doors for a while when police caught and arrested him.

Bundrage is far from the first careless and just plain stupid bank robber.

In 2010, a Connecticut bank robber tried to save some time by calling ahead to make sure the tellers would have cash on hand when he arrived, according to NBCNews.com.

The scheming criminals weren't even shy about their intentions. They simply told the bank to have a bag of cash at the ready because they were coming to steal it.

Ten minutes later, when the 27-year-old and 16-year-old heisters arrived, the police were on their way to arrest the two.

One 2002 bank robbery in Iran might top them all.

A sorcerer told a robber he was invisible-and the burglar believed it, then went to try and rob a bank, Metro tells us.

He walked into the bank and started just grabbing money from customers. Of course, the customers were well aware that there was a very visible and identifiable person swiping their cash, so they fought back and held onto their money.

The poor criminal, however, lost out big-time: He paid the con-artist wizard about $625 for the fake invisibility services.

No Exception

149813169 Mitt Romney with Richard Mourdock in August

First it was Todd Akin. Then Steve King. Then Joe Walsh. Then Richard Mourdock. One after another, Republican congressional nominees opened their mouths, inserted their feet, and embarrassed their party. Akin, a congressman running for U.S. Senate in Missouri, said rape survivors don?t need abortions because ?if it?s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.? King, an Iowa congressman up for re-election, deflected a question about abortions for 12-year-old rape victims by saying, "I just haven't heard of that being a circumstance that's been brought to me in any personal way.? Walsh, a House incumbent in Illinois, asserted that ?with modern technology and science, you can't find one instance? where abortion is necessary to protect a woman?s life or health. ?There is no such exception as life of the mother,? Walsh concluded. ?And as far as health of the mother, same thing.? Mourdock, the Indiana state treasurer and Republican nominee for U.S. Senate, opined that ?even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen."

For Mitt Romney, these episodes have been a two-month headache. First, he had to override Paul Ryan?s opposition to abortions for rape victims. Then he had to apologize for Akin?s comment. Then he had to apologize for Mourdock?s. And the apology tour might be just getting started, because Akin and Mourdock are hardly alone. Their view?that abortion should be prohibited even in cases of sexual assault?isn?t just the party?s official position. It?s the most commonly held position among new Republican nominees for the U.S. Senate.

Thirty-three Senate seats are at stake in this election. Five of them are held by Republican incumbents whose nominations were never seriously contested. In the remaining 28 states, three nominations (Connecticut, Hawaii, and Rhode Island) were won by pro-choice candidates. Maine Republicans nominated a guy who said he?s ?pro-choice specifically for three reasons: rape, incest, life of the mother.? New Jersey Republicans picked a state senator who advocated ?pro-life initiatives? and ?reasonable restraints? but said abortion should be legal early in pregnancy and for rape victims. Eight nominations (Arizona, California, Florida, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Virginia, and Wisconsin) went to candidates who said abortion should be outlawed except in cases of rape or incest. Three (Delaware, Maryland, and Minnesota) went to pro-lifers who haven?t clarified their stance on exceptions. The rest?12 nominations?went to candidates who would ban abortion even for survivors of sexual assault. That?s a plurality of the party?s primaries.

Akin and Mourdock are the best-known cases. But Ted Cruz, the former solicitor general of Texas, also opposes a rape exception.* So does Pennsylvania nominee Tom Smith. So does West Virginia nominee John Raese: ?I will proudly stand against the destruction of innocent human life unless the life of the mother is in jeopardy.? In Vermont, the state right-to-life committee certified Republican nominee John MacGovern as ?fully pro-life.? When MacGovern was asked whether ?a woman should be forced by the government to give birth to a rapist?s baby,? he answered: ?I?ve always in my career and to this day been loyal to the principle of life. I?m pro-life. I?m profoundly pro-life. I?m pro-life to my core.?

In Nebraska, state Rep. Deb Fischer was pressed for her position on the Republican platform?s call for ?a constitutional amendment banning all abortions with no exception for rape or incest.? She responded: ?I am pro-life, and I believe in the sanctity of life. I do believe that there should be an exception made for the life of the mother.? In Ohio, state treasurer Josh Mandel rejected a rape exception and declared, ?I?ll do everything I can to protect innocent life.? In Michigan, Rep. Pete Hoekstra was asked whether a woman should have to bear her rapist?s child. Hoekstra, who was already on record against a rape exception, replied: "I believe life is a gift.?

In New York, Wendy Long, a member of Romney's Justice Advisory Committee, boasted during her primary that she was ?100 percent pro-life,? whereas her opponents would grant ?exceptions? to an abortion ban. In Washington, state Sen. Michael Baumgartner admitted that ?rape is a tragedy? but concluded: "I still believe life begins at conception. That is consistent with my Catholic beliefs. And I believe we must protect life." In North Dakota, a reporter asked Rep. Rick Berg: ?You would not make an exception for rape?? Berg replied: ?No.? The reporter asked about punishment for a woman who has such an abortion: ?Should we put her in jail? Should we fine her?? Berg answered: ?Those are things that need to be worked out through the legislative process.?

Three of the party?s candidates seem not to have addressed the rape question. Kevin Wade, the nominee in Delaware, has repeatedly said he opposes ?taking human life.? Dan Bongino, the nominee in Maryland, opposes federal funding of embryonic stem-cell research and believes ?life begins at conception and should be protected.? Kurt Bills, the nominee in Minnesota, reportedly sidestepped a rape question but opposes embryonic stem-cell research and boasts that he?s been a ?co-author on every ? bill? backed by Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life. Late Wednesday, Slate reached out to these three candidates to ask about the rape scenario. We haven?t heard back yet. But given what they?ve said already, it?s a good bet that at least one of them would refuse the exception.

Judging by polls, most Republican voters don?t share this view. And I haven?t tried to nail down where the party?s hundreds of House nominees stand. But the Senate numbers are striking. Of the 28 nonincumbent nominees, 12 to 15 share the view of Akin, Mourdock, and the party platform. They believe a rape victim should be forbidden to terminate her pregnancy. This is no longer a fringe position. It isn?t a couple of gaffes by renegade crackpots. It?s the predominant view among Republican nominees for the nation?s highest legislative body. It?s what the Republican Party is.

Clarification, Oct. 25, 2012: This sentence was revised to make clear that Ted Cruz is the former solicitor general of Texas. (Return to the revised sentence.)
