How to Stop Your Smartphone from Secretly Wasting Data in the Background

How to Stop Your Smartphone from Secretly Wasting Data in the BackgroundUnlimited data plans are an endangered species nowadays, so most of us have to watch our limits in order to avoid excess charges on our bill. That's easy enough when we know how much cellular data we're using on our smartphones, but becomes problematic when our smartphones eat up our precious megabytes in the background. This doesn't just happen on Android, but iPhone, too. Here's how to stop it.

Recently, a friend asked me for help when he reached 90% of his data usage despite barely using any data. I thought this was surprising because he has an iPhone and iPhones aren't allowed to do a whole lot in the background. Despite these limitations, apps can still do a fair amount of downloading when they're not open and regardless of how they're connected to the internet. In short, you could end up going over your data limits easily without even knowing it, regardless of whether you're on Android or iPhone. In this post we're going to look at how to figure out which apps are eating your data unnecessarily and how to stop them. On Android it's pretty simple, but for iPhone you need to do a little detective work.

How to Stop Your Smartphone from Secretly Wasting Data in the Background

Android

Tracking which apps use your data is pretty simple. Just install My Data Manager (Free) and allow it to track the data your apps use. At any time, you can open up Data Manager and take a look at how many megabytes (or gigabytes) any app is using. If anything is sucking your data plan dry, make sure that app isn't running in the background (or just delete it from your phone altogether). Solving the problem is easy so long as you know which app is using up all of your data.

iPhone

On an iPhone, you can't track exactly which apps are using your data unless you're jailbroken. If you are, you can grab iNetUsage ($2) from Cydia and monitor the breakdown. If not, you need to conduct an investigation and find the culprit(s) with some trial and error. Let's go over a few methods.

Ensure Wi-Fi Is Actually Enabled

How to Stop Your Smartphone from Secretly Wasting Data in the BackgroundSometimes high data usage happens because you turned off Wi-Fi and just forgot. When my internet access goes down, I often do this and forget to turn it back on for a week. Fortunately I just don't use that much data in general, but if I did it could turn into a major problem. Before you spend a bunch of your time investigating the problem, make sure your data settings are actually correct.

Look at the Apps that Use the Most Battery

How to Stop Your Smartphone from Secretly Wasting Data in the BackgroundOn an iPhone, if an app is draining your battery it has a better chance of eating up your data plan as well. Battery-sucking apps run in the background, and there are only a few things background apps can do on an iPhone: use the GPS, play music, and download files. While apps that download files might seem like guilty party, iOS only allows background downloading for a short amount of time. If the app isn't open on your phone, iOS will shut off its download privileges after about 10 minutes. As a result, you're probably aware of when an app is downloading something in the background.

You're more likely to run into wasted data when you leave a music or location-aware app open in the background. Music apps can play indefinitely, and if they're streaming that music you can use a lot of data simply by forgetting to stop playback. Location-aware apps use your GPS and may need to download data relevant to that GPS. While it's unlikely that they're constantly grabbing new data (e.g. maps or location-based photos), you want to be sure these kind of apps aren't accessing your location without your knowledge. Fortunately, this is very easy to do. Simply go into the Settings app on your iPhone, tap Privacy (in iOS 6, Location Services in earlier versions), then tap Location Services, and peruse the list of apps. Most apps will just have an ON and OFF switch, but some will have a purple solid, purple outline, or gray solid arrow next to them. A purple arrow means the app has used your location recently, a gray arrow indicates the app has used your location in the last 24 hours, and a purple outline arrow indicates the app is using a geofence (meaning that it's waiting to carry out an event when you're in a certain location, like when the Reminders app provides a location-based reminder). The purple solid and outline arrows are the ones that cause the most trouble, so if you see them, try quitting those apps to see if your data usage decreases.

Check Your Bill

How to Stop Your Smartphone from Secretly Wasting Data in the BackgroundMost cellular providers keep detailed records of your data usage, even if it's only temporary. Whether or not your bill will retain enough detail to tell you what you were doing with that data is another story, but it will tell you how much you used on a specific day and time. In the event you forgot about a large download, or you retrieved a lot of data that you thought was over Wi-Fi, you may be able to pinpoint the cause by knowing exactly when it happened.

Additionally, you may be able to find out more detailed information by calling your cellular provider directly. They may have access to more information than you, and they may be able to add something called "detailed billing" to your plan. This service often costs money but provides additional information about your data usage so you know what's going on. That said, signing up for this service means you're paying your provider to keep a record of what you do on your smartphone that they may retain longer than the data they already keep about you. Consider whether that matters to you before signing up.

Employ a Data Monitoring App and Use It Strategically

How to Stop Your Smartphone from Secretly Wasting Data in the BackgroundIf you'd prefer to avoid your cellular provider, you can also use a data monitoring app to keep an eye on your overall usage. This won't tell you which app is causing trouble, but it will tell you when a lot of data was used. Just like you can with your bill (as discussed in the previous section), you can use the date and time information to try and pinpoint what happened when large amounts of data was consumed. Sure, this isn't a definitive method but it might help you zero in on the culprit(s).

Call Your Cellular Provider

Wasted data may not be your fault?it may be an error on the part of your provider. Don't just assume it's your fault. Chances are you did use the data, but sometimes mistakes happen (nobody's perfect, after all). If you've looked around and something seems a little fishy, call your provider and ask. There may be an error and you may be in the clear.

Sugar Bowl in New Orleans to host Big 12-SEC game

NEW YORK (AP) ? The Superdome in New Orleans will be the site of the new marquee bowl matching the Southeastern Conference and Big 12, and the game will still be called the Sugar Bowl.

The conferences made the announcement Tuesday. The agreement between the leagues and the bowl is for 12 years, and ESPN will hold the TV rights.

The SEC has a long history with the Sugar Bowl. Seventy-one times an SEC team has played in the game, far more than any other league. The very first Sugar Bowl in 1935 matched Tulane, then of the SEC, against Temple.

"New Orleans and the Sugar Bowl are synonymous with post-season college football. For many years, fans have enjoyed the color and pageantry that New Orleans offers," SEC Commissioner Mike Slive said in a statement. "We look forward to competing against the Big 12 as a new championship tradition begins on New Year's Day."

The agreement was first reported by ESPN.com, which also reported that ESPN will pay $80 million per year to televise the game.

Several sites were vying to host the game, including Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Atlanta, Houston and San Antonio also submitted bids, but it came down to the Cotton Bowl in Arlington and the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans.

"It was a very difficult decision," Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby told the AP in a phone interview Tuesday night.

He declined to parse the decision, but did say many factors were considered, from facilities to hotel space. He said despite the SEC's long relationship with the Sugar Bowl, Texas got strong consideration.

"If think if it would have gone to Dallas, the SEC would have been fine with it," he said.

The new college football playoff begins after the 2014 season and the first Sugar Bowl in the new format will be played Jan. 1, 2015. It will match the champions from the SEC and Big 12, unless those teams are selected to the national semifinals. In that case, two other highly rated teams from those conferences will be paired up.

"We're pleased to have been selected to host this great game," Sugar Bowl Chief Executive Officer Paul Hoolahan said. "This gives us the chance to extend the Sugar Bowl's long-standing relationship with the Southeastern Conference and to develop a new relationship with the Big 12 Conference."

The game will be part of the semifinal rotation for the new playoff system, along with the Rose Bowl and the Orange Bowl. The Big Ten and Pac-12 will continue their longtime relationship with the Rose Bowl, and the Atlantic Coast Conference has a deal to send its champion or another highly ranked team to the Orange Bowl.

Another deal is being worked on that will send a team from either an SEC team, a Big Ten team, or Notre Dame to the Orange Bowl to face the ACC in years the Miami-based bowl does not host a national semifinal.

At least three more sites need to be picked, and the Cotton Bowl is likely to be one of them.

"Regardless of which site we chose, the other city is likely to host an access bowl, to host semifinals and will be considered to host the championship game," Bowlsby said.

The Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Ariz., is expected to be in the playoff rotation, and Atlanta, which hosts the Chick-fil-A Bowl, is the other leading candidate to be part of the new postseason system. How often each site hosts a semifinal has yet to be determined.

There is also a plan being considered to add a seventh game to the rotation that would match either a Pac-12 or Big 12 team against the best team from the five other FBS conferences, including the Big East.

"Both a seven-game and a six-game model are still in play," Bowlsby said.

EU: Eurozone recession to be worse, rebound slower

(AP) ? Europe's economy is still reeling and unemployment could remain high for years despite the progress made in solving the debt crisis, the European Union warned Wednesday, as it downgraded next year's forecasts for the 27-country bloc.

The European Commission, the executive arm of the EU, on Wednesday revised down its forecast for the region's gross domestic product, which it now expects to grow by just 0.4 percent in 2013, compared to its expectations this spring of 1.3 percent growth.

The commission had previously expected the 17 countries that use the euro to find its footing next year, with 1 percent growth. Now it predicts only a 0.1 percent uptick.

The report also suggests that unemployment won't start falling until 2014 ? and then only slightly.

"Europe is going through a difficult process of macroeconomic rebalancing and adjustment, which will last for some time still," Olli Rehn, the EU's economic and monetary affairs commissioner, told reporters. "Market stress has been reduced but there is certainly no room for complacency."

The downbeat forecast helped erase an initial euphoria in markets over President Barack Obama's re-election, with France's CAC-40 stock index and the DAX in Germany both down 1.5 percent in afternoon trading Wednesday.

The eurozone has made progress this year toward resolving its debt crisis, which has been dragging down economies throughout the EU and beyond. Countries that use the euro have slashed spending and promised to keep their deficits in check; they've vowed to better protect their banks by improving how they're regulated and supervised; and the European Central Bank has put in place a plan to help countries struggling with high borrowing costs, the hallmark of the crisis and the reason some have sought bailouts.

But those measures have not yet been felt in the real economy. The unemployment rate across the eurozone is at a record high of 11.6 percent, and it is 10.6 percent in the wider EU. In the latest in a steady stream of job cuts, Danish wind turbine maker Vestas, Swedish wireless equipment group LM Ericsson, and Dutch bank ING announced a total of almost 7,000 layoffs Wednesday. Eurostat, the EU's statistics agency, also said retail sales in the eurozone shrank 0.2 percent in September.

This commission's predictions for this year reflect that grim reality. It expects the EU's economy to contract by 0.3 percent, rather than remaining flat as it forecast in the spring. It also predicts that the eurozone GDP will fall 0.4 percent, against a previous expectation of a 0.3 percent drop.

Official third-quarter GDP figures ? which will show whether the eurozone has entered recession as economists suspect it has ? are due to be released on Nov. 15. A recession is defined as two quarters in a row with negative growth.

Many economists have argued that, in solving one crisis by cutting government spending and raising taxes, politicians have exacerbated another ? slow or negative growth. Meanwhile, tighter banking rules have hurt lending, the fuel economies need to grow.

The commission's report also confirms that the crisis is not sparing even Germany, Europe's largest economy and the traditional motor for growth.

It predicted that Germany would eke out just 0.8 percent growth in 2012, compared with its earlier forecast of 1.7 percent. ECB President Mario Draghi warned Wednesday that "the latest data suggest that these developments are now starting to affect" the German economy.

In a speech given in Frankfurt, Draghi called on governments to back up the ECB's plans to help countries with their borrowing costs by cutting debt and improving growth through cutting excessive red tape.

"Across the whole euro area, governments are making determined efforts to reverse economic imbalances," he said. "They are implementing reforms to redress the misguided policies of the past and to create sustainable long-term growth. It is a difficult road and there is still a long way to go. But the early signs are encouraging."

"Financial developments in Germany are the mirror-image of financial developments in the rest of the euro area," Draghi added. "And this means that measures to ensure the stability of the euro area as a whole will also be to the benefit of Germany."

Greece has suffered the most from the vicious slow growth cycle and is now in its fifth year of recession. Many say it's unclear how the country will ever manage to reduce its debts, spark growth and break the cycle. The new forecast expects Greece's economy to contract 6 percent this year and another 4.2 percent next year. In the spring, the commission had hoped growth would be flat in 2013.

Because low or negative growth reduces the amount of money governments receive in taxes, stagnation also threatens to throw countries off their deficit targets. According to the report, both Greece and Spain won't meet their goal of reducing their deficits to 3 percent by 2014. It predicts Greece's will be 4.5 percent at that point and Spain's 6.4 percent.

In Greece's case, that could mean jeopardizing the rescue loans it is using to fund itself. Greece has asked its international creditors for more time to reach its goal. Rehn said Wednesday that the country's debt levels look increasingly unsustainable and that something must be done, but he stopped short of saying what.

Showing Value: How HR Needs to Rethink Itself for a Changing World

Here?s another example of how HR just can?t get any respect.

A new global survey of more than 400 senior executives from?from audit, tax and advisory firm KPMG International, titled Rethinking Human Resources in a Changing World,?seems to be yet another opportunity for business leadership to bash HR for what they?re not adding to the organization.

The survey found that ?only 17 percent of respondents said HR does a good job of demonstrating its value to the business, and even fewer ? 15 percent ? viewed HR as providing insightful and predictive workforce analytics.?

Relegated to a ?transaction-based organization?

In fact, the opening paragraph of the Executive Summary pretty much tells you where this survey is going:

The value of the Human Resources (HR) function elicits sharply contradictory views within organizations. On the one hand, in today?s competitive global markets, the ?war for talent? is understood to be crucial to almost every business. On the other hand, the HR function is often dismissed as non-essential or ineffective. Respondents to the study commissioned by KPMG International, give similarly mixed messages. About eight in ten (81 percent) respondents say that putting in place the most effective talent management strategy will be key to competitive success. Some six in ten (59 percent) believe that HR will grow in strategic importance. But just 17 percent maintain that HR does a good job of demonstrating its value to the business.?

Yes, it?s getting to sound like a broken record hearing executives give a mixed message about the value of HR, but that?s what we keep hearing all too often these days. The difference with this survey is that it not only focuses on what HR is doing wrong, but more importantly, what it needs to change to get back on track.

?Human Resources is often relegated to a transaction-based organization lacking strategic insight and contribution,? said Claudia Saran, a KPMG principal and the U.S. leader of the firm?s People and Change business, in a press release about the survey. ??HR executives must determine how to adapt their organization, including both its technology and people, to connect more explicitly with their respective companies? business strategy.?

?HR is struggling? to manage a ?global, flexible workforce?

The survey also found that 55 percent of survey respondents believe the metrics that define success in HR today will fundamentally change over the next three years, and Rethinking Human Resources in a Changing World examines the nature of the challenges facing the HR function and its future direction.

The report?s main findings include the following:

  • HR is struggling with the challenges of managing a global, flexible workforce.?From the report: ?The global workforce has become increasingly integrated across borders while simultaneously growing more virtual and flexible. These developments have made the retention of key talent and building workforces in new markets the top priorities of HR departments over the last three (3) years. Survey respondents expect little change in the next three (3) years.?Yet only about one in four respondents say that HR at their company excels at core issues such as sourcing and retaining key talent globally; supporting a virtual and flexible workforce; and supporting the greater globalization of the business.?
  • Finding ways to engage with workers will help address the challenges of this global, flexible and remote workforce. From the report:??Insights from interviewees for this report point toward improved employee engagement as the way to address many of these problems. This will involve creative solutions, such as the development of HR policies and approaches that have global application but can be made relevant to local conditions. It will?also require new ways to engage meaningfully with a workforce that is less committed to the organization.?
  • Technology has already transformed HR and the application of data analytics will foster even more profound change. From the report:??Sixty-nine percent of companies surveyed say it is more common for the HR function to provide web-based and/or mobile HR platforms (e.g. benefits, payroll) than it was three (3) years ago; only 3 percent of respondents have cut back on these technology enhancements. These have already enabled HR to do its basic, administrative work faster and more efficiently. They have also provided employees with more flexible and tailored training opportunities while creating a positive culture for communication.?

HR?s 3 core challenges

The report also identifies these three (3) ?core challenges? that HR executives are focusing on:

  1. Balancing the global and the local ? managing, hiring and identifying talent globally while retaining important local insights
  2. Managing a flexible and virtual workforce ? but not at the cost of loyalty and career development;
  3. Retaining the best talent ? maintaining employee engagement in the face of a less committed, more flexible workforce.

Although ?Balancing the global and the local? may not be high on your agenda if you are a smaller, U.S.-only organization, ?managing a flexible and virtual workforce? and ?retaining the best talent? sure jumped out at me as key challenges that HR and talent managers are facing (some would say struggling with) today.

When asked what their HR functions focused on most frequently over the past two years, the largest number of U.S. respondents, 29 percent, reported it was ?retaining crucial skills and experience within the business.? An even larger 41 percent said this area would receive the most focus over the coming three years.

Increasing the proportion of virtual/flexible workers

In other survey findings from U.S. respondents:

  • Over the next two years, 69 percent said they believed their companies would increase their proportion of virtual/flexible workers.
  • Nearly half (49 percent) said they had outsourced core business activities to external vendors over the past two years.
  • Social networking sites had given their organizations access to significant new sources of talent, according to 37 percent, and 41 percent said the social networking sites made it easier for competitors to poach talent.
  • Over the next two years, 63 percent agreed that coming up with the best talent management practices would be a key tool in their ability to compete in a more competitive global marketplace.

Much of the focus of Rethinking Human Resources in a Changing World?is about how technology and data will transform businesses and HR, and it is worth spending some time reading since it is likely this is an issue right now for you and your own organization.

But, the survey is also a road map for?the steps HR professionals should be taking ?to improve the function?s contribution and its image? given how, as the Executive Summary puts it, ?It is practically a business truism that the HR function is not well respected at many organizations.?Whether deserved or not, this stigma is clearly evident in our survey results.?

Steps that HR should be taking

Thankfully, the survey also lists?a number of steps executives should take, ?to improve the function?s contribution and its image.?

  • Make the value of HR more prominent and understood.
  • Think, understand and communicate in the language of business.
  • Move from administration to higher-value-added activities.
  • Transfer appropriate responsibilities to line managers.

Some may find KPMG?s?Rethinking Human Resources in a Changing World?just more of the same HR bashing that has been going around for years, but to my eye, this is a reasoned and thoughtful survey and analysis of where HR stands, and more importantly, what HR needs to do to get itself back on a meaningful and value-enhancing track within most organizations. The study?s Conclusion could not make this any more clearly:

Many of the challenges identified in this report are long standing. But they are no less urgent for that. Indeed, there is no escaping the prospect of a shrinking and weakened HR function in the coming years. Quite simply, HR has to break out of the trap it has been stuck in for far too long.

Unfortunately, there are no simple solutions, no generic approaches or best practices that will suddenly enable the HR function to become more effective and respected. HR needs to focus on delivering unique talent solutions tailored to each company?s circumstances and requirements.?

Stock futures drop after Obama reelection, Draghi gloom on economy

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stock index futures were set for a lower open on Wednesday in the wake of Barack Obama's reelection as U.S. president as comments by European Central Bank President Mario Draghi underscored the weakness in Europe's economy.

With political uncertainty removed, investors will turn their focus back to the looming "fiscal cliff" of some $600 billion in spending cuts and tax increases that are due to kick in next year and could derail the U.S. economic recovery.

Europe will also garner attention as Greece's ruling coalition hopes to overcome its own divisions and defy protesters Wednesday to push through an austerity package needed to secure aid and avert bankruptcy.

ECB President Draghi said the bank expects the euro zone economy to remain weak "in the near term" and euro zone governments must press ahead with efforts to forge closer financial, fiscal, economic and political union.

"Unfortunately, the honeymoon doesn't last very long in real time and we knew that regardless of the outcome of the election, our focus would immediately be shifted to the fiscal cliff, which is going to be difficult in and of itself," said Art Hogan, managing director of Lazard Capital Markets in New York.

"Away from that, we had moved European concerns to the backburner in the near term, and we are going to get back to focusing on them as well - we haven't changed the makeup of a global economy with an election in the United States, and like it or not, we have to shift our focus back to that."

Energy shares may come under pressure, as companies in the sector will likely see more regulation in Obama's second term, with less access to federal lands and water, even as the administration promotes energy independence.

Alpha Natural Resources Inc dropped 7.5 percent to $8.90, Arch Coal Inc lost 9.4 percent to $7.85 and James River Coal Co tumbled 17 percent to $3.90 in premarket trading.

Healthcare stocks may also see some volatility, as President Obama's reelection rules out the possibility of a wholesale repeal of his healthcare reform law, but questions remain as to what parts of the domestic policy will be implemented.

S&P 500 futures fell 12.2 points and were below fair value, a formula that evaluates pricing by taking into account interest rates, dividends and time to expiration on the contract. Dow Jones industrial average futures lost 113 points, and Nasdaq 100 futures declined 16.75 points.

Pfizer Inc's Xeljanz treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, one of the company's potentially most lucrative experimental drugs, was approved by U.S. regulators late Tuesday and is now poised to compete with Abbott Laboratories Inc's top-selling Humira. Pfizer shares edged up 0.2 percent to $24.75 in premarket trading.

Macy's Inc gained 0.5 percent to $41.58 in premarket after the department store retailer reported a higher third-quarter profit, helped by sales gains, and raised its full-year profit outlook.

Other S&P 500 companies scheduled to post earnings include Mondelez International Inc , Monster Beverage Corp , Whole Foods Market Inc and Qualcomm Inc .

European stocks pared early gains and briefly turned flat around midday on Wednesday, as nagging worries over the euro zone crisis eclipsed an initial relief over U.S. President Barack Obama's reelection.

Asian shares rose amid relief that the U.S. election result was clear cut. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan gained 0.9 percent to an eight-month high, after spending much of the session in and out of negative territory.

Use Your Words: A Writing Guide for Mothers is a guide to the art of creative nonfiction for women who want to give written expression to their lives as mothers. The book includes excerpts of quality writing about motherhood and teaches readers how to find the heart of their writing, learn to use motherhood as a lens through which to write the world, and turn their motherhood stories into art. Use Your Words is a book for both beginning mother writers and more advanced writers who want to improve their writing ability as they process the gritty, mundane, often-funny, and sometimes heartbreaking nature of parenthood.

Kate Hopper has an MFA in creative writing from the University of Minnesota, where I taught literature and creative writing. I currently teach a variety of classes at The Loft Literary Centerin Minneapolis, including Motherhood & Words?, a class for women interested in writing about motherhood. I also teach an online version of Motherhood & .

Her writings have appeared in Brevity, Literary Mama, mamazine, Minnesota Parent, MotherVerse, Preemie Magazine, nytimes.com, and the Minneapolis StarTribune. My first book, Use Your Words: A Writing Guide for Mothers, has just been published by Viva Editions.

Interview with Joanne Elder, author of - The Writer's Life

Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4
Joanne Elder is a member of the Professional Engineers of Ontario. She received her Bachelor?s and Master?s degrees in Engineering Science at the University of Western Ontario. During her professional career, she spent several years in the aeronautical and nuclear industries, published numerous technical papers in the field of Metallurgical Engineering and presented at international conferences. She now resides in King City, Ontario with her two teen-aged children and husband. Spectra, Elder?s debut novel, and the sequel, Entity, were published by MuseItUp Publishing.
You can visit Joanne Elder?s website at www.sciencefictionthrillers.com.

Q: Welcome to The Writer's Life!? Now that your book has been published, we?d love to find out more about the process.? Can we begin by having you take us at the beginning?? Where did you come up with the idea to write your book?

Often science fiction plots involve extraterrestrials carrying out ruthless experiments on humans. I loved the idea of switching it up and stirring in some deadly consequences for those immoral enough to exploit a newly discovered, peaceful and intelligent life form.

In my writing, I like to explore the unknown and science fiction is the perfect avenue to do that with. Past experience has shown that today?s speculative fiction may become tomorrow?s scientific fact. A subplot in Spectra narrows in on the human soul and what it is. Scientifically speaking, if it exists, it has to be something. So does God for that matter. Perhaps I was inspired to explore this particular unknown after losing my father and questioning the scientific rational behind an ever-after.

Q: How hard was it to write a book like this and do you have any tips that you could pass on which would make the journey easier for other writers?

When writing Spectra, I carried out research into the human energy field. In particular, a study done at UCLA where it was actually measured, thus proving that we have an energy aura surrounding our body. I also researched plasma theory to model the energy-based life forms in Spectra as plasma life, which, interestingly, could well exist. The challenge was to take this research and convey it in a completely non-technical manner so it would be merely thought provoking for the reader. To take science down to an understandable level that is entertaining requires a clear and total understanding of it. I would encourage any author wanting to include some real science in their science fiction to do their research very thoroughly.

Q: Who is your publisher and how did you find them or did you self-publish?

No doubt all debut authors follow the same path I did. Once Spectra was complete, I queried literary agents and large presses to find a home for it. Although it?s not impossible for a debut author to land a contract in this manner, it?s very difficult and the waiting time for responses can be painstakingly long. After all, agents get bombarded with queries on mass. Ultimately, patience got the better of me and I started to submit the manuscript to smaller presses. For submissions, many smaller presses allow you to send in your entire manuscript rather than just a few chapters, which I feel serves to the author?s advantage. I very quickly signed a contract with MuseItUp Publishing and I?ve found them to be excellent.

Q: Is there anything that surprised you about getting your first book published?

I was surprised at how many authors are out there trying to get their manuscript published and how hard it is to get published, even with a small press. Additionally, I have developed a great appreciation for the professional editing process that each book goes through prior to its release. Editors are dedicated people and are instrumental to the quality of the end product.

Q: Can you describe the feeling when you saw your published book for the first time?

It took almost a year to write Spectra, five months to land a publishing contract and another year of waiting for the release during which the final editing was done. After all that work, finally holding the book in my hands gave me an unbelievable feeling of satisfaction. I was elated.

Q: What other books (if any) are you working on and when will they be published?

The sequel to Spectra, Entity, was just released by MuseItUp Publishing. Right now, I?m writing another science fiction thriller. I have yet to give the book a title, but it centers on nanobots, which are tiny machines injected into the body to treat disease.

Q: Fun question: How does your book contribute to making this world a better place?

Set in a backdrop of murder, mystery and betrayal, Spectra is a science fiction thriller that dares to attempt to bridge the gap between science and spirituality. My technical mind, trained in engineering, had me questioning whether there is actual science to support religious beliefs. After carrying out the research for Spectra I came to the conclusion that, yes, there is. When reading Spectra, it?s important to not lose sight of the fact that real science does support the existence of energy-based life as portrayed in the book, despite the fact that it?s never been discovered. Perhaps one day we will be able to scientifically prove the existence of a soul, and God, uniting all religions. For now, it gives me piece of mind to think that there is a little more than faith telling me that there is an ever-after.

Q: Finally, what message (if any) are you trying to get across with your book?

In Spectra, one man?s life crumbles as he struggles to stop the genocide of newly discovered energy-based life forms so unique they cause humans to acquire extraordinary intelligence for a brief period following exposure to them. Flirting with genius is too intoxicating for the chief antagonist in the story, and he decides to exploit the power of the entities with little regard for the fact that he?s killing them in the process. Spectra explores the fact that human greed doesn?t necessarily come with a dollar sign, but can be manifested as something entirely different. In this case, power and control come with extreme intellect.

Q: Thank you again for this interview!? Do you have any final words?

My father passed away in 2008 after suffering with Alzheimer?s disease. Spectra is dedicated to my father and in his memory half the ebook royalties are being donated to Alzheimer?s research.?
