China helps shares stabilize but U.S., Greek woes persist

LONDON (Reuters) - World shares stabilized on Monday after three straight sessions of losses as firmer Chinese data helped to offset concerns about a possible U.S. fiscal crisis and delays to an installment of Greek aid.

The data showing Chinese exports picked up sharply in October, signaling the giant economy was gathering strength, gave investors some encouragement. However, this was partly undermined by Japan, which reported its economy had shrunk 0.9 percent in third quarter, and was heading into a mild recession.

The MSCI world equity index was down just 0.04 percent at 322.15 points by 1300 GMT following the three days of losses last week, and U.S. stock index futures pointed to a modestly firmer start on Wall Street.

"Any bit of positive news from China will swing things upward here," said Oliver Purshe, president at Gary Goldberg Financial Services in Suffern, New York. "There's a little bit of pent-up desire to bounce back today."

The S&P 500 futures contract and the Nasdaq 100 futures were up 0.35 percent, while the Dow Jones futures were up 0.3 percent.

However, gains were likely to be limited due to the looming budget crisis in Washington. "Investors remain consumed by U.S. fiscal cliff consequences, and this is capping market enthusiasm," said Tim Waterer, senior trader at CMC Markets.

With the U.S. bond market closed for the Veterans Day holiday and euro zone finance ministers gathering in Brussels to discuss the Greek bailout programme, activity for the remainder of the day was expected to be light.

In Europe the FTSEurofirst 300 Index was flat at 1,096.80 by the midsession, steadying after last week's 1.6 percent drop. London's FTSE 100 , Paris's CAC-40 and Frankfurt's DAX traded between 0.1 percent up and 0.3 percent higher.

The foreign exchange market was focused on the Eurogroup meeting which will not be authorizing another installment of money for Greece on Monday, but could agree to give Athens two more years to meet the goals needed to release the funds.

Pressure for a deal on Greece is growing because Athens has to redeem 5 billion euros' ($6.35 billion) worth of treasury bills this week and had been counting on cash from the next aid tranche to help cover that.

The euro was virtually flat at $1.2715 before the meeting, near a two-month low of $1.2690 struck on Friday, with little gain seen coming from Sunday's approval by the Greek parliament of a tough 2013 budget.

"The key issue will be what comes out of the Eurogroup meeting. If the tranche is released, it is positive for risk and we should see a reasonable bounce in the euro, given the pessimism that's been built into the markets about the euro area," said Raghav Subbarao, FX strategist at Barclays.

However, many people in the market had low expectations for what could emerge from the meeting. "I think we've seen too many finance ministers' meetings over the course of the last two or three years to have any great expectations," Peter Dixon, global equities economist at Commerzbank, said.

Any rise in the common currency could be short-lived as data this week is expected to show a slowdown in German economic growth and France slipping into recession.

The uncertainty over the Greek aid talks and the U.S. budget supported German government bonds, with 10-year yields steady at 1.35 percent.

European credit markets were also flat with the iTraxx main index, made up of 125 investment-grade bonds, 0.4 basis points wider at 131 basis points.

CLIFF FACE

Since the U.S. elections, investors have worried that the return of the status quo in Washington will make it difficult for lawmakers to reach the compromises needed to avoid the "fiscal cliff" at the end of the year, when nearly $600 billion worth of spending cuts and tax increases begin.

President Barack Obama was due to begin meetings with labor, business and civic leaders to find support for his plans to resolve the crisis this week, before talks with Congressional leaders who return to Washington after the holiday weekend.

The dollar pushed up to near a two-month high against a basket of currencies as the concerns about the budget dispute encouraged investors to move into the safe-haven currency. Speculators favored the dollar in the latest week for the first time since early September, according to data from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.

But the yen took its share of the demand and one dollar bought 79.44 yen on Monday, unchanged from Friday when the U.S. currency fell to its weakest in nearly three weeks.

In the oil market worries about the danger of the United States, the world's top oil consumer, tipping into recession as a result of the fiscal cliff and the weak Japanese data were checked by the strong Chinese trade numbers.

Brent crude oil futures rose 5 cents to $109.45 by 1230 GMT, after gaining more than 2 percent on Friday. U.S. oil was up 7 cents at $86.14 after finishing up more than 1 percent last week to end a three-week slide.

Gold added 0.29 percent to $1,736.01, holding near a 3-week high around $1,738 on Friday and well above a 2-month low around $1,672 hit last week.

Celgene rises on Abraxane pancreatic cancer data

NEW YORK (AP) ? Celgene Corp. shares rose Monday after the company said its cancer drug Abraxane improved survival for patients with advanced pancreatic cancer.

THE SPARK: On Friday, the Summit, N.J., company said patients who took a combination of Abraxane and Eli Lilly and Co.'s drug Gemzar lived longer than patients who took only Gemzar. The results come from a late-stage clinical trial of 861 patients with pancreatic cancer that had metastasized.

Celgene said it will report more data from the trial at a medical conference in January.

THE BIG PICTURE: Pancreatic cancer is one of the most lethal cancers because even though it is relatively uncommon, long-term survival is poor. Only about 5 percent of patients are still alive 5 years after diagnosis.

Abraxane was first approved as a treatment for breast cancer. In October, the Food and Drug Administration approved it as a primary treatment for non-small cell lung cancer, and Celgene is also studying the drug as a treatment for melanoma.

U.S. sales of Abraxane in the first half of the year, prior to the lung cancer approval, totaled $168 million.

THE ANALYSIS: Stifel Nicolaus analyst Joel Sendek said the patients treated with only Gemzar probably survived for about six months after the study began, and an improvement of six weeks or more for the Abraxane patients would be meaningful. Sendek said he expects the FDA to approve Abraxane as a treatment for pancreatic cancer in 2014. He said sales of the drug in pancreatic cancer should be around $92 million in 2014 and $241 million in 2015.

Citi Investment Research analyst Yaron Weber gave a similar forecast, saying he expects the data will show patients lived 1.5 to 2 months longer based on other studies. Both analysts kept "Buy" ratings on Celgene shares.

SHARE ACTION: Celgene stock picked up $3.80, or 5.3 percent, to $75.30 in afternoon trading. The shares are up more than 20 percent since June 21. That day the stock took a tumble because Celgene announced it was slowing down its plans to seek more marketing approvals for Revlimid, a different cancer drug.

Iran VP: We will break Obama's 'grasping hands'

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran's vice president said Monday that Tehran will break the 'grasping hands' of newly re-elected President Barack Obama, the official IRNA news agency reported.

Mohammad Reza Rahimi also said Iran will overcome U.S.-led sanctions against the country.

"We will break grasping hands of Obama and we will be successful in bypassing the sanctions," Rahimi was quoted as saying during a research and scientific exhibition at Tehran University.

Iranian officials dismiss the impact of last week's U.S. elections, suggesting it will have little impact on Washington's Iran policy. On Thursday President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad mocked the cost of campaigning, dubbing the vote a "battleground for capitalists"

Rahimi is known for hardline anti-Western statements. In June, he blamed global drug use on the teachings of Jewish holy texts.

The sanctions have hit Iran's economy hard in the past months. They are imposed over Iran's nuclear program, which the West suspects is aimed at weapons development. Iran denies the charge, saying its program is for peaceful purposes like power generation and cancer treatment.

Ahmadinejad and allies like Rahimi are anxious to play up Iran's confrontation with the West. Conservatives who used to back him, but who turned against him last year over his perceived challenge to the clerical establishment, say he has mismanaged the economy and contributed to the country's woes.

Iran's parliament plans to question Ahmadinejad over the economy, and in the past has accused Rahimi of misusing public funds. The vice president denies the allegations.

Victims testify about details of Afghan massacre

JOINT BASE LEWIS-McCHORD, Wash. (AP) ? Stories of the massacre came, one by one, over a live video link from Afghanistan into a military courtroom outside Seattle: torched bodies, a son finding his wounded father, boys cowering behind a curtain while others screamed "We are children! We are children!"

As the Afghans recounted the horror that left 16 dead in the darkness early on March 11, the U.S. soldier accused of carrying out the rampage sat quietly in the courtroom.

At one point, Staff Sgt. Robert Bales moved closer to a large monitor showing the testimony. At other times, he watched as it played on a laptop screen in front of him. Either way, he gave no discernible reaction to the stories he heard.

Speaking through an interpreter, one Afghan closed his remarks with the words: "My request is to get justice."

The hearing at Joint Base Lewis-McChord is meant to help determine whether Bales, 39, will face a court-martial in the deaths of the seven adults and nine children. He could face the death penalty if he is convicted.

Bales, an Ohio native and father of two from Lake Tapps, Wash., has not entered a plea and was not expected to testify. His attorneys have not discussed the evidence, but say he has post-traumatic stress disorder and suffered a concussive head injury while serving in Iraq.

The hearing, which began last Monday, was held overnight Friday to accommodate the Afghan witnesses.

They recounted the villagers who lived in the attacked compounds and listed the names of those killed, to provide a record of the lives lost. The bodies were buried quickly under Islamic custom, and no forensic evidence was available to prove the number of victims.

The youngest witness was Sadiquallah, a slight boy of about 13 or 14 whose head rose just above the back of the seat he was sitting in. With his ears sticking out from beneath a white cap, he described being awakened by a neighbor screaming that an American had "killed our men."

He said he and another boy ran to hide in a storage room and ducked behind a curtain. It provided no protection from the bullet that grazed his head and fractured his skull. Sadiquallah said the shooter had a gun and a light, but he could not identify the man.

The other child was hit in the thigh and also survived. He is scheduled to testify Saturday night.

As those two were hiding, Sadiquallah's older brother, Quadratullah, sought refuge with other children in a different part of the house. When the gunman found them, Quadratullah testified, the children scrambled, yelling "We are children! We are children!"

The boys' father, Haji Mohammed Naim, was the first person shot at the home. He testified that he was awoken by shots and dogs barking. He asked his wife to light a lantern, and saw the shooter climb over a compound wall.

"He jumped from the wall, and I just saw the light on his head," Naim said. "He just started shooting me."

Asked how close the gunman was to him when he was shot, the thick-bearded Naim gestured toward a water bottle on the table in front of him, less than an arm's length away: "He was as close as this bottle."

One older son, Faizullah, recalled being awoken by someone telling him there had been a shooting at his father's compound. He rushed there to find him with a gunshot wound to the throat. One of Naim's daughters was also wounded, as were two neighbor siblings.

Faizullah said he loaded the wounded into a car, using a blanket to lift some of them. They were treated at a nearby base, then flown to a bigger military hospital in Kandahar. All five survived.

Khamal Adin, who had a beard and was wearing a turban, sat at the witness table with his arms folded, his head tilted to the left. He described the carnage at the second village, Najiban.

The morning after the rampage, Adin said he arrived at a compound belonging to his cousin, Mohammed Wazir. Wazir had been away on a trip, and he found Wazir's mother lying dead in a doorway, a gunshot to her head.

Further inside, Adin said, he found the bodies of six of his cousin's seven children, the man's wife, and other relatives. The fire that burned the bodies was out, but he said he could still smell smoke.

When Adin began to testify, Bales moved from his seat to be closer to the courtroom monitor.

Adin was asked if he could say he personally saw the bodies. He answered: "Yes. I have seen each individual and took them out by myself." Asked to describe the injuries, he said: "Everybody was shot on the head. ... I didn't pay attention to the rest of the wounds."

Prosecutors say Bales broke his shooting rampage into two episodes, attacking one village, returning to the base and then departing again to raid another.

In between his attacks, he woke a fellow soldier, reported what he'd done and said he was headed out to kill more, the soldier testified. But the soldier didn't believe what Bales said, and went back to sleep.

Dressed in green fatigues, two Afghan National Army guards recounted what they had seen in the pre-dawn darkness outside the base the night of the killings.

One guard recounted that a man had arrived at the base and did not stop even after he asked him three times to do so. Later in the night, the second guard said, he saw a soldier leave the base ? laughing as he went.

They did not say the soldier was the same person nor did they identify him as Bales.

On Saturday, Criminal Investigations Command Special Agent Leona Mansapit testified that one of the witnesses to the massacre claimed that at least two American soldiers were involved.

Mansapit said a woman whose husband was shot named Masoma Dawood recalled seeing two soldiers. Every other eyewitness has indicated that only one U.S. soldier was involved, and a surveillance video showed only one soldier returning to the American's base after the killings.

Interviewed months later, Dawood reported having seen two soldiers in her room, and that one of them held her back as the other shot her husband.

Sen. Chambliss 'Confident' Petraeus Was Truthful During Confirmation Hearing

Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss of Georgia said this morning on "This Week" that he is "confident" that David Petraeus, the former CIA director who resigned Friday following an alleged extramarital affair with his biographer, was truthful during his confirmation hearings for his post in the Obama administration.

"I don't know (the) exact date of when all of this process began and what took place there, but we're - we're confident that David Petraeus was very straight up with us during the confirmation hearings," said Chambliss, the vice chair of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, who said he learned of the FBI investigation that uncovered the alleged affair on Friday.

Chambliss called Petraeus - who led the surge in Iraq under former President Bush and also led U.S. troops in Afghanistan before being named head of the CIA - a "great leader" and "a great patriot," but said it was appropriate for him to resign.

"David Petraeus is a great leader, a great patriot, and he is a guy who has probably contributed more to the safety of the United States of America over the last decade than any one single individual. And he's a good leader. And what leaders do when they're put in a difficult position is, they lead," Chambliss said. "And he led here by doing what he thought was the right thing. And I think he did do the right thing. I don't think there's any question."

Democratic Sen. Patty Murray of Washington also praised Petraeus this morning on "This Week."

"I think that General Petraeus has served our country incredibly well in many different forms and fashions. And like all men and women who serve our country - have served our country - we owe him a debt of gratitude," Murray said. "And I hope this moves forward quickly for him and his family to resolve."

Chambliss also noted that Petraeus, who was scheduled to testify this week to the House and Senate intelligence committees regarding the attack on the U.S. consulate in Libya, could still be called.

"But at the end of the day, I would not rule out General Petraeus being called to testify. That still could happen at some point in time," Chambliss said.

Real estate priced in gold ? SGTreport ? The Corporate Propaganda ...

from Gold Money:

Throughout history many fortunes have been made and lost in real estate. Luck has of course played a part in these outcomes, but the main reason for changing fortunes is the decisions that were made, whether good or bad. Often the bad decisions were made because of the misunderstanding of some basic elements needed to choose real estate wisely.

For example, returning from a business trip not too long ago I got into a conversation with the driver of a car that I had arranged to meet me at the airport and take me home. This gentleman was in his late 60s and in a very jovial mood because it turns out, he had just sold his house in the outskirts of London. Thus, he was now ready to retire and was excited about the prospect of moving to the southwest of England where he planned to buy a cottage to enjoy his retirement. But as it turns out, that wasn?t the only reason that made him happy.

He crowed about how well he had done on his ?investment?. Apparently, he bought the house in 1964 for ?3,100, and was now quite delighted by the ?212,000 selling price it had achieved.

Crews Out Rescuing Pets Left Behind During Superstorm Sandy ...

Pet Rescue

Laurie Molinaro is reunited with her cat after Superstorm Sandy. (Credit: CBS 2)

SEASIDE HEIGHTS, N.J. (CBSNewYork) ? Many of those who fled as Superstorm Sandy approached had no choice but to leave behind their beloved pets.

But as CBS 2?s Vanessa Murdock reported, now, thanks to the hard work of animal rescue crews, those pets have been reunited with their families. Murdock rode along with the New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The sun was shining on Seaside Heights this week, but the sadness was overwhelming for Laurie Molinaro.

?I don?t care about the house. I don?t care about what we lost. All I care about is that the animals are OK,? Molinaro told an animal rescue officer.

Molinaro only had four hours to gather whatever she could from her home, but her cats ? Stash and Paulie ? were her priority

?They?re scared. They don?t know what happened. They don?t understand,? she said. ?All they know is their lives were turned upside down like the rest of us.?

She called the New Jersey SPCA to take and shelter the cats until she could bring them home again.

The New Jersey SPCA typically typically tackles the problem of animal abuse, But Sandy?s devastation meant a new set of responsibilities and a lot more phone calls.

?We have changed our mission in the last two weeks,? said NJSPCA Chief Officer Col. Frank Rizzo. ?These people need our help and their animals need to be rescued.?

For more than a week, NJSPCA crews have been working round the clock, most often going from empty house to empty house in search of stranded animals.

?People have been calling, sending their keys,? Rizzo said.

They returned to one home where a kitten earlier escaped them, Thankfully, the second time, he was perched near the window and Detective Larry Donato was able to scoop him up.

He was scrawny, but will survive. So will two turtles who went more than a week without food.

With all five little creatures safely stored inside ? the crews head to the nearest shelter. There, rescued cats and dogs are cared for until their owners come to claim them.

Kristina Stromblad hoped her cat, Chloe, was here.

?I left her enough food and water for four days ? who knew,? said Stromblad, of Lavallette.

After two weeks apart they were finally reunited.

The NJSPCA has rescued hundreds of animals over the past week and a half. If you have had to leave your pet and live along the shore, go to NJSPCA online for more information.

Also, on Nov. 13, comics will ?stand up? for homeless animals and put on a benefit for Sandy pets.

Futuristic Roleplay in need of males and females!

Image

4099 is the current year and planet Earth is no longer home to humans. The world was bursting at the seams with people being born every single second and no one dying. Not one person in the entire planet had died since 4050. At first everyone saw this as a blessing, something that was a ray of light in the dark times. But within a few months everything changed for the worse. People started to give birth at a rapid rate and over the years Earth's population had nearly hit a life threatening high. The government tried everything in their power to stop women giving birth. They tried birth control pills which would be given to any female who had "became a woman", they even tried hysterectomy's when women reached the young age of twenty. Whatever they tried though never worked. After years of drowning in the sea which was the human race, the government came up with a brand new plan which was sure to reduce the amount of human beings on planet Earth.

Come find out more and join in! http://www.roleplaygateway.com/roleplay/trinity-the-new-earth/ We will be starting soon! In need of both males and females.
