PFT: Cutler won't play Monday vs. 49ers

Bill O'BrienAP

Bill O?Brien, who quit his job as the Patriots? offensive coordinator to become the head coach at Penn State this year, is a strong candidate for the national coach of the year award in college football. The Penn State team, which could have fallen apart in the wake of NCAA sanctions for the Jerry Sandusky scandal, has actually played impressive football and compiled a 7-4 record.

Unfortunately for Penn State fans, that impressive season has people talking about the possibility that NFL teams could offer head-coaching positions to O?Brien. And even more unfortunately for Penn State fans, O?Brien is refusing to rule that possibility out.

After Penn State beat Indiana today, the Harrisburg Patriot-News reported that O?Brien will not commit to being at Penn State in 2013. Instead, O?Brien is simply saying that all of his focus is on Penn State?s season-ending game against Wisconsin.

?That?s not something that I even think about,? O?Brien said when asked if he?ll return in 2013. ?I think about that I?m the head football coach at Penn State. And I?m looking forward to getting this team ready for Wisconsin. I mean, we give legs to a story that?s not even there.?

When Jason La Canfora of CBS reported this week that O?Brien is expected to be pursued by NFL teams, what Penn State fans hoped to hear was a direct answer along the lines of, ?I will remain at Penn State next year and will not consider any other job offers.? That?s not what he said, and that has people in Pennsylvania wondering if O?Brien wants to leave.

But the reality is that even if O?Brien had answered directly and clearly and said he will absolutely, positively coach Penn State next year, that still wouldn?t put to rest any speculation about his future. Everyone in the coaching business can thank Alabama coach Nick Saban, who famously said ?I?m not going to be the Alabama coach? shortly before he took the job, for the fact that no one believes anything any coach says about his future anymore.

What we know for sure about O?Brien is that he?s been the offensive coordinator of an excellent offensive team that got to the Super Bowl, and he?s been a college head coach who pulled his team together and got them playing well under tough circumstances. That?s the kind of resume NFL owners will love. So no one should be surprised to see him back in the NFL.

Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9" Video Unboxing

To be totally honest, when the doorbell rang earlier today and the UPS man handed me an Amazon package, I could not for the life of me recall what I had ordered. It was only when I opened the package and saw the box within for the Kindle Fire HD 8.9" that I remembered pre-ordering one the day it was initially announced over two months ago.

Phil's Fire HD 8.9" should arrive on Monday and team will take it from there, but in the spirit of the unnecessary yet mandatory unboxing, I fired up the video camera to get one done. Check out the video above to see what's in the box, the Epic Mickey ad on the start screen, and how the HD 8.9" sizes up to Apple's iPad. For more information and to order, you can jump over to Amazon.

'Unprecedented' protests escalate in Jordan

Protesters from the Islamic Action Front and other opposition parties shout slogans during a demonstration after Friday prayers in Amman.

By NBC News wire services

Updated at 11:33 a.m. ET: AMMAN, Jordan -- Around 2,000 people called for the removal Jordan's King Abdullah at a rally in downtown Amman on Friday in protest at fuel price hikes, in a marked escalation of street anger in the third day of demonstrations in the Western-backed kingdom.

One person was killed during demonstrations on Thursday.

PhotoBlog: Jordan protesters call for 'downfall of the regime'

"Go down Abdullah, go down," the protesters Friday chanted as police, some in riot gear, largely stayed away from crowd, near the main Husseini Mosque.

The crowed also chanted "The people want the downfall of the regime," the rallying cry of the Arab Spring uprisings that have shaken the Middle East and toppled leaders in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and Yemen.

"Shame. Shame. Prices are spiking and Abdullah gambles," people shouted.

Criticizing the king in public is forbidden in Jordan and is punishable by up to three years in jail.

Thousands of Jordanian protesters rallied against the government's hiking of fuel and gas prices in Amman today. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

The Muslim Brotherhood, the country's largest opposition group, had called on people to take to the streets, but top officials from the group choose not to participate in the rally.

The 50-year-old king has ruled since 1999.

On Thursday, the protester was killed and scores were injured during an attack on a police station overnight in Jordan's second-largest city of Irbid, witnesses told Reuters. Police said they used tear gas to disperse masked youths who attacked government property.

Some protesters torched part of Irbid's municipal headquarters later on Thursday to vent their anger at officials who said the dead young man had been armed, the witnesses said.

Protesters throw rocks at police during a demonstration at al-Baqaa Palestinian Refugee Camp north of Amman, Jordan, on Thursday.

Elswhere, hundreds of people blocked roads, set government buildings alight and trashed shops in the towns of Maan, Tafila, Salt and Karak.

Thousands chant 'revolution' in rare protest against Jordan's king

"The country has risen up from north to south and this state of popular tension is unprecedented," said Murad Adailah, a senior member of the Islamic Action Front, the political arm of the Muslim Brotherhood.

'Political crisis'
A staunch U.S. ally with the longest border with Israel, Jordan has not seen the kind of mass revolts that swept other Arab countries. The coming days will be crucial in testing whether the relative calm can continue.

Jordanians have held occasional protests inspired by the Arab Spring uprisings, demanding democratic reforms and curbs on corruption. But those gatherings were peaceful and the security forces did not use weapons.

Latest news on fighting in Israel and Gaza

Demonstrators sometimes chant against Abdullah but there seems to be little enthusiasm for revolution. The monarchy is seen as a guarantor of stability, balancing the interests of tribes native to the east of the Jordan river with those of the majority of citizens, who are of Palestinian origin.

But the price rises announced on Tuesday could boost the popularity of the Islamist opposition, emboldened by the successes of its ideological brethren in Egypt and Tunisia.

The government has warned Islamists not to take advantage of the tension caused by the price rises but they have never sounded more confident.

A Jordanian police officer fires tear gas at protesters during a demonstration in Amman on Thursday.

"This is a huge political crisis and it has become clear that there is no more room to delay real and comprehensive reforms," said Jamil Abu Bakr, a Muslim Brotherhood leader.

Most of the civil unrest is in outlying areas inhabited by powerful tribes who are the original inhabitants of the country. They supply the army and security forces with recruits and form the backbone of support for the ruling Hashemite dynasty.

Economic pinch
Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour said lifting hefty subsidies that cost at least $2 billion annually was unavoidable to avert economic collapse caused by a ballooning budget deficit and minimal foreign aid that normally keeps the economy afloat.

As a result of the changes, cooking gas will jump 54 percent, he said. Many low-income Jordanians use the gas for heating.

Some politicians say the monarch has been forced to take only cautious steps toward economic reforms, constrained by his tribal power base, which sees such measures as a threat to its political and economic privileges.

The palace has traditionally contained discontent by offering patronage, state jobs and other perks. Critics say that policy of placating constituents was not sustainable in a country that no longer enjoys large infusions of foreign aid.

The fuel price increase is aimed at securing a $2 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund.

PRE-SHABBAT ROCKET BLAST IN TEL AVIV. City under siege as ground troops prep for invasion

image

?

by KleinOnline

TEL AVIV ? Three hours before the start of Shabbat here, air raid sirens were blasted in Tel Aviv and an explosion could be heard.

Defense sources said a missile landed in an open area and that it did not strike ground.

No injuries or damage were reported in Tel Aviv.

Hamas?s so-called military wing immediately took responsibility for the blast, saying it fired at missile at Tel Aviv.

An hour before the rocket was launched, Hamas released a statement claiming it had ?a surprise? for Israel.

Sixty-seven rockets fired from the Gaza Strip struck Israel today. The country?s Iron Dome system intercepted 55 more rockets today

In all, 335 rockets have struck Israel since Operation Pillar of Defense began two days ago.

Earlier today, three Israeli civilians were lightly injured when a rocket hit the Eshkol Regional Council region near Gaza.

Yesterday, three Israelis were killed by a direct rocket hit on their family home in the Gaza border town of Kiryat Malakhi. A four year old Israeli boy and an infant were moderately wounded in separate rocket attacks.

Meanwhile, Israel today took preparations for a possible ground operation into Gaza. The Israel Defense Forces said over 16,000 reservists have been mobilized, out of the 30,000 approved by the Israeli government

The IDF told KleinOnline the Paratrooper and Givati Infantry brigades have completed what they say are final preparations for a potential ground operation. The forces are currently outside Gaza on standby awaiting orders.

The Big Military Story No One Wants to Talk About Right Now: Rape

gender_icon_012911.jpg

Salacious details of Gen. David Petraus?s adulterous relationship with biographer Paula Broadwell?and all of the attendant sexist framing?have eclipsed a much more important military story.

Yesterday, the Air Force imposed what it calls a ?wingman policy? requiring its trainees at the Lackland base in San Antonio, Texas, to be with at least one classmate at all times. The move comes in response to an Air Training and Command investigation that identified 23 instructors on the base who had allegedly raped, sexually harassed or had ?unprofessional relationships? with 48 trainees.

Lackland trains all Air Force recruits, [Bloomberg reports.] (http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-11-14/wingman-rule-to-curb-sex-abuse-is-adopted-by-air-force.html) So far, five officials have been convicted in court martials on charges ranging from adultery to rape and others could face criminal charges.

Of course the epidemic of unpunished rape within the U.S. military?and the routine silencing of and retaliation against enlisted survivors who dare to report it?isn?t new. Due in large part to the release of the Academy Award-nominated ?Invisible War? documentary, the sustained activism of Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.), and several high-profile class action civil suits filed against former and current Defense Secretaries Donald Rumsfeld and Leon Panetta, the issue has captured headlines. In April, the Pentagon made several changes to its dysfunctional sexual assault protocol, such as extending evidence retention for 50 years and granting service-people who have been assaulted immediate transfers so that they don?t have to report to or interact with their attackers while the crime is being investigated.

These shifts are the bare minimum.

In 2010 alone, there were at least 19,000 intra-military sexual assaults, according to the Defense Department. Further enhancing the trauma, there remains a ban on military insurance coverage of abortions even in the case of rape and incest.

I haven?t seen sexual assault reports broken down by race. What I can say is that a disproportionate number of servicewomen on active duty are black. They make up a whopping 31 percent of the active-duty population compared to the 15 percent they comprise in the general population. (Fifty three percent of women on active duty are white, compared to 78 percent of female civilians.)

In the coming days or weeks, Congress will take up the National Defense Authorization Act and it has the opportunity to lift the ban on military insurance coverage of abortion in the case of sexual assault. It?s way past time to get rid of class-based restrictions on abortion access, including those for military women and Medicaid recipients via the Hyde Amendment. Now that ?women?s issues? are all the electoral rage, we should make that demand, straight no chaser.

Extras:

Consider using the Center for Reproductive Rights?s handy letter to your Congressperson urging him or her to lift the cruel, backwards ban on military insurance coverage of abortion in the case of rape or incest.

Michelle Chen?s still-relevant, excellent 2008 Colorlines feature ?Home from the Military? explores some of the contours of military service and sexual assault for women of color living on low incomes.

For more context, read the (potentially triggering) September 2011 class action suit filed by 28 very brave female and male sexual assault survivors against former defense secretaries Donald Rumsfeld and Robert Gates.

NIMBYs Strike in Adams-Morgan, Arguing That Church-to-Hotel Conversion Will Displace Local Businesses

Here's an odd one from the NIMBY files. Neighborhood groups claim that a plan to convert a church building into a hotel structure should be blocked because it "will displace local businesses and has been planned without sufficient input from the community."

Yesterday afternoon, the neighborhood groups staged a small protest in front of the church that's set to become the hotel's lobby. "Businesses that have been here for generations are threatened by this capital flow," organizer Chris Otten said into a microphone to the dozen or so neighbors gathered. "The wealthy customers step out of the hotel and see the small community businesses on Columbia Road, and see the fancy restaurants on 18th Street. Where do you think they go?"

This would make some kind of sense if we were talking about replacing an apartment building with a hotel, but even if nobody who stays at the hotel ever patronizes a Columbia Road small business they'll still have just as many customers as before.

But the bigger picture question is why should public policy be promoting the interests of incumbent business owners? There's a Korean restaurant on my block that's pretty good and offers a great happy hour bargain. But there's definitely better Korean food out there, much of it just inconveniently far away in Annandale. If the proprietor of a top-notch Korean restaurant in Virginia wants to open a DC location across the street, should the city step in to block that lest the restaurant that's already there be "displaced" by competition? That doesn't sound like a good idea.
