Team Boid will cease future development of its Twitter client

Boid Beta

Graham Macphee, one of the members of Team Boid, announced today on his personal blog that the group would cease future development of its popular Twitter client, Boid. When the group set out to create Boid, the intention was to show the development world how well Twitter clients could look and work. They wanted to be the "Tweetbot for Android," and they surely made a splash. Well regarded as an example of Google's new "holo" design guidelines, Boid was extremely popular.

Unfortunately, now without ever exiting "beta," Boid will no longer be developed by the group. Macphee explains that the Boid app wasn't meant to be an achievement for the team, but rather a tool that helped in the achievement of their true goals. They believe that what they accomplished while working on Boid is a positive result for them. The overall result, as they see it, was that other apps followed their lead and started to use design in ways that helped the overall user experience.

Macphee reiterated via Twitter after the post went up that this is not an official announcement -- and there was no mention of the moves Twitter's making that's driving other clients out of business -- but that this is what they intend to make official very soon. If there was any silver lining in this, it's that their intention going forward is to make Boid open-sourced for anyone to continue to work with it in the future. We'll be excited to see how Boid does as the community takes on the development effort.

coffee vending - Business Directory listings

Coffee vending services are popular with office workers and visitors. They insert a few coins, and press a button to make their selection and receive their hot drink almost instantly. These types of machines have come a long way from the first model, designed to dispense holy water, by an individual who worked as an engineer and mathematician hundreds of years ago.

Prior to the installation of drink machines in a workplace, individuals relied on kettles, canteens or the provision of a boiling water supply for drinks. Many used kettles appeared on the scene and were proved to be a major safety concern. Many employers installed hot water urns to allow employees to make themselves hot drinks.

Refreshment breaks in the workplace have always been a source of conflict between employees and management. Employees were often accused of taking extended breaks, or too many breaks. They responded with complaints about the distance they had to go to get a hot drink, or the queue they had to stand in when they got there.

Introducing vending machines in rest areas has proved popular with employees and eliminated the need for kettles in the work area. If the rest and vending area is incorporated into the office area, staff are less likely to take frequent or extended breaks. They can get their hot drink from the office coffee service and return to their desk if that is allowed.

Renting and installing vending equipment for drinks, snacks and hot and cold meals, is a more cost effective option for the employer. He or she pays a rental contract and relies on the service provider to clean, service and keep the machines fully stocked. It is not unusual to find the modern offices have space allocated on their design plans for a seating area which can accommodate vending facilities.

Many employees take advantage of food and drink machines to save time. They do not want to waste time going outside the office for food and drinks, especially in the bad weather. They can usually take their pick and enjoy a wide variety of hot and cold drinks and food.

Incorporating healthy and nutritious options in food and coffee vending is a necessity. Those firms that provide kitchen supplies Pittsburgh area and elsewhere keep on top of customer likes and what are the most popular options. The responsible service providers supply a range of healthy eating options for their clients.

If you need the best coffee vending service in Pittsburgh take a look at this site. We offer office coffee service for reasonable prices an no gimmicks, at the Coffee Bean.

#IDF & #Hamas trade threats via Twitter; IDF Blog Gamifies Social Media War

See on Scoop.it ? Tracking Transmedia

On Wednesday, Israel looked like the clear winner in its social media skirmish with Hamas. But the roles have switched, and Israel is losing?.

?

?One recent IDF propaganda video?allegedly showing Hamas terrorists firing rockets from Gaza?has been remixed with a musical score that could very well be out of a video game. The ?Remix This Video!? option has even been enabled in the video description. No, thanks.

?

The video game references don?t end here. As Jon Mitchell, my colleague at ReadWrite, noted yesterday, the IDF has gamified its liveblog of the war. The IDF blog is now awarding badges for various activities, including how many times you share the blog on social media and how many times you use the search on the site.

?

But perhaps the worst element for Israel has been the contrast in the types of photos emerging from the two camps on Twitter. From the IDF, you have Instagrammed photos of attractive, stylish, and approachable soldiers, smartly rounded up and described as ?surreal? by Buzzfeed?s Katie Notopoulos, doing what young, tech-savvy people do: smiling and having a good time, apparently.

?

In contrast, the photos emerging from Gaza are haunting and raw, like the now-infamous photograph of BBC Arabic journalist Omar Jihad crying into the dead body of his 11-month-old son. The Instagrammed IDF soldiers look insanely out-of-touch when compared to the realities on the ground in Gaza. One can imagine it is a matter of time before the IDF issues guidelines against posting these kinds of images. But it should be rethinking its strategy altogether?.

Bishops OK documents on penance and better preaching, vote ...

By the Catholic News Service

And Catholic Telegraph Staff

?

During their annual fall general assembly in Baltimore Nov. 12-15, the U.S. bishops voted down a document on the troubled U.S. economy, passed documents on penance and better preaching, approved a reorganization of their Communications Department and endorsed the sainthood cause of Dorothy Day.

The bishops were to meet in executive session Nov. 14 and 15, which were not open to the media.

On the assembly?s opening day, the bishops discussed on the nation?s troubled economy and what their response to it should be, but a day later their proposed document ?The Hope of the Gospel in Difficult Times: A Pastoral Message on Work, Poverty and the Economy? did not gain the two-thirds vote required for passage.

When it was introduced Nov. 12, some bishops criticized the document for being too long to be practical and for failing to include a variety of points and historical references.

The bishops also overwhelmingly approved ? in a 236-1 vote ?an exhortation encouraging Catholics to take advantage of the sacrament of penance, or reconciliation.

The bishops? Committee on Evangelization and Catechesis, chaired by Bishop David L. Ricken of Green Bay, Wis, prepared the text. The exhortation, to be made available in pamphlet form, will aim to ease the fears of Catholics who have not gone to confession for some time.

It will be made public in time to allow for dioceses to prepare for Lent 2013.

On a voice vote, the bishops endorsed the sainthood cause of Dorothy Day, co-founder of the Catholic Worker movement.

New York Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan, USCCB president, is promoting Day?s cause; her Catholic Worker ministry was based in New York City. The cause was first undertaken by one of Cardinal Dolan?s predecessors in New York, Cardinal John O?Connor.

Cardinal Dolan and other bishops who spoke Nov. 13, including some who had met Day, called her sainthood cause an opportune moment in the life of the U.S. church.

The bishops also approved expanding the memorial for Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos, a German-born Redemptorist priest who ministered throughout antebellum-era America for more than 20 years. Archbishop Thomas J. Rodi of Mobile, Ala., noted that Blessed Seelos ministered at a time when ?immigrants were not welcomed well in many circumstances,? which he said has contemporary significance.

A year after U.S. Catholics began using a new translation of the missal at Masses, the bishops agreed to begin revising the Liturgy of the Hours ? updating hymns, psalms, various canticles, psalm prayers, some antiphons, biblical readings and other components of the liturgical prayers used at various parts of the day.

Archbishop Gregory M. Aymond of New Orleans, chairman of the Committee on Divine Worship, said the work would probably take three to five years to complete and the aim would be to more accurately reflect the original Latin texts.

The bishops were also urged to broaden their support for their national collections. In a Nov. 13 report, they heard that a decline in diocesan participation in these collections since 2009 has been a loss of $8.7 million to Catholic programs that benefit from the collection.

Bishop Kevin J. Farrell of Dallas, chairman of the Committee on National Collections, described the collections as ?an important mechanism for mobilizing collective action in the church universal and a way for all the faithful to participate in solidarity with the rest of the church.?

The bishops voted for a strategic plan that will guide the USCCB?s work for the next four years, a ?road map? to shape conference programs and activities to strengthen the faith of Catholics and help them actively live out their faith.

During the first year, the focus will be on faith and activities closely tied to the Year of Faith. In 2014 and 2015, initiatives will strengthen parish life and worship. The final year calls for Catholics to be witnesses to the wider world.

The bishops also approved a 2013 budget of $220.4 million and agreed to add a national collection for the U.S. Archdiocese for the Military Services. The budget for 2013 represents a 1.3 percent increase from 2012.

The new collection for the military archdiocese would begin in 2013. Under the plan, it would be taken voluntarily in parishes every three years. Bishop Michael J. Bransfield of Wheeling-Charleston, W.Va., USCCB treasurer, said the 2013 budget includes a surplus totaling more than $749,000. He also told the bishops that there was a projected surplus of $250,000 for 2014, meaning there was no need to seek an increase in the annual diocesan assessment for USCCB operations.

In his presidential address to open the assembly, Cardinal Dolan Nov. 12 told the bishops they couldn?t engage culture, dialogue with others or confront challenges unless they first recognize their own sins and experience the grace of repentance.

The cardinal also said the sacrament of penance was something the USCCB planned to stress for all Catholics year-round with reflections on re-embracing Friday as a day of penance, including the possible reinstitution of abstinence on all Fridays.

The bishops? assembly, which opened nearly a week after Election Day, also included discussions about religious liberty and marriage.

Archbishop William E. Lori of Baltimore, chairman of the Ad Hoc Committee for Religious Liberty, said Nov. 12 the work of defending religious liberty would continue despite ?setbacks or challenges.?

San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore J. Cordileone, chairman of the Subcommittee for the Promotion and Defense of Marriage, said Election Day was ?a disappointing day for marriage,? which points to the need to ?redouble our efforts.?

The chairmen of four U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops? committees will begin work soon on drafting a document that reiterates the teaching authority of local bishops while urging them to use new technologies to share Catholic theology. The end result is expected to complement a 20-year-old document on the teaching authority of diocesan bishops, said Cardinal Donald W. Wuerl of Washington, chairman of the bishops? Committee on Doctrine.

The bishops Nov. 12 agreed in a voice vote to the appointment of a working group that includes the chairmen of the committees on doctrine, evangelization and catechesis, and canonical affairs and church governance to draft the document. No timeline for development of the document was announced. Originally, the bishops were to consider a document titled ?Contemporary Challenges and Opportunities for the Exercise of the Teaching Ministry of the Diocesan Bishop,? which was developed by the Committee on Doctrine. It called upon bishops to take advantage of new technologies ? including social media, blogging and cellphone technology ? to respond and explain church teaching when an aspect of church teaching is portrayed inaccurately, particularly by theologians.

In an effort to strengthen its communications and public relations efforts, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops approved the hiring of a director of public affairs as efforts begin to reorganize the conference?s Communications Department. The position would work to unify messages on the activities and stances of the USCCB ? not individual dioceses or bishops ? and better carry out church campaigns related to the new evangelization, said Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan of New York, USCCB president. The Nov. 13 vote on hiring the director of public affairs was 202-25 with four abstentions during the bishops? annual fall general assembly in Baltimore. Cardinal Dolan told the assembly that whoever fills the position also would likely speak on behalf of the USCCB to the media and provide background on church teaching to public officials and in other venues. The person appointed to the position would be responsible for developing a ?more intentional, focused, comprehensive and unified communications strategy? based on church teaching and focused on promoting the new evangelization, according to a supporting document distributed a day before the vote.

?The strategy,? the document said, ?should create strong and powerful messages that result in a higher level of understanding and acceptance by Catholics and other audiences.? Auxiliary Bishop Christopher J. Coyne of Indianapolis cautioned that when hiring someone who may speak on behalf of the USCCB, it should be clear that the person only represents the conference. He also urged that the new director of public affairs to be well versed in church teaching, structure and ecclesiology and be able to talk about such topics authoritatively. He also said that any bishop who might publicly question or refute a response from the public affairs director would undermine the USCCB?s communications effort. In response, Cardinal Dolan said the director?s role as spokesperson ?would not be his or her full-time major occupation, but it would be part of it.? During those times when speaking on behalf of the conference, the person would be restating positions taken by the USCCB as a whole rather than staking out new positions or engaging in debates in the media, he said.

The chairman of the U.S. bishops? Committee on Migration joined the broadening chorus calling on President Barack Obama and Congress to ?seize the moment? and pass comprehensive immigration reform next year. In a statement issued Nov. 13 during the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops? annual fall general assembly in Baltimore, Los Angeles Archbishop Jose H. Gomez, committee chair, called on Obama and congressional leaders to work together on a bipartisan immigration reform bill.

He also encouraged people to make their voices heard in support of an immigration system ?which upholds the rule of law, preserves family unity and protects the human rights and dignity of the person.? With the strong turnout of Latino voters in support of Obama?s re-election Nov. 6, politicians from both parties have said they are willing to revive and follow through on the long-stagnant efforts to fix the problematic U.S. immigration system. An estimated 11 million people in the U.S. lack legal immigration status. Most of them have no path to legalization that does not involve returning to their home countries to wait in lines that can take decades to clear. Many of those people live in families in which some members are U.S. citizens and others have legal immigration status

Congratulations, Sec-Gen Jinping, and President Rajapaksa!

Xi Jinping`s elevation to the role of the Secretary General of the Communist Party of China at the 18th National Congress makes him effectively the leader of one-fifth of the world`s humanity. This is a one-fifth that has fond, longstanding and fraternal relations with this country -- which have been cemented with such great exuberance during the seven year tenure of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, whose ascension to office after his election victory in 2005 took place exactly seven years ago on this day.

China is at the cusp of world leadership, and if the country is not the number one world power, she is definitely the nation that ranks near number one if not number one in fact -- in being great friends with Sri Lanka.

China has wholeheartedly supported this country in international forums, and this has been at variance with the regressive polices of some other powerful countries which have not fully understood the difficulties of coming out of a long-running period of armed conflict. China on the other hand stood by us through thick and thin, and that`s due to the Chinese sense of pragmatism which is imbued in the Chinese Communist Party`s current day ruling credo.

Xi Jinping the new Chinese leader, a `princeling` who is the son of a Chinese revolutionary who fought shoulder to shoulder with the late chairman Mao, showed the world a glimpse of this hard-headed Chinese sense of `can-do`, when in a short but power-packed speech on assuming office, he talked about improving the quality of lives of the Chinese people. Not for him, the theatrical flourishes that were in the past almost a trademark quantity for any perorations by Chinese statesmen ...

Instead, he spoke of cleansing the Chinese Communist party of bribery and corruption, and therefore instantly established his credentials as a man with his feet firmly rooted in the realities of his time.

Sri Lankans will to a man and a woman, no doubt wish the Chinese citizens greater prosperity and even better lives than now, under the guidance of the new Communist party chief and his seven member politburo. China is the next global superpower, definitely, if she is not already one ...

The Chinese governance ethos is closer to our hearts, and close to the imagination of President Rajapaksa whose seven year tenure was infused with the same pragmatic vision envisioned by the Chinese leader in crisp and friendly tones at the Communist Party National Congress just the other day.

Therefore China is extremely kindred to us -- and this bond of fraternal kingship between the people and leaders of these two countries is preceded by excellent bi-lateral relations that go back for what seems to be millennia ...

But the Chinese today are a powerhouse. The economy is the second strongest in the world, having overtaken that of Japan not so very long ago, and China is on a world-changing trajectory, a journey triumphed by the fact that this country`s citizens comprise one fifth of the globe`s people.

These sheer numbers enhance China`s potential economic clout almost exponentially. But what`s heartening is that with this gathering economic heft, China has not lost her way.

The Chinese have by and large not tried to police the globe, and have on the contrary identified with the practical difficulties that a country such as ours faces. There were no grand flourishes that alluded to global dominance, when Xi Jinping spoke on his ascension to office, though the new Chinese leadership can well afford to speak with a swagger.

This tendency of humility also points to China`s instinctive sense of pragmatism as the country assumes a position of near unprecedented global responsibility. In all, the new politburo and the new leader`s words about getting down to the job, are a happy augur to the Chinese people -- all 7 billion of them - and by extension to the people of China-friendly Sri Lanka, and the people of the world. We wish the Chinese people a prosperous future on this occasion of the inauguration of a brand new leadership, as we also warmly wish China`s dear friend President Rajapaksa on the seventh anniversary of his own ascension to office. Subha Anagathayak!

Jindal: Liking people is key to expanding GOP tent

FILE - This July 27, 2012 file photo shows Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal speaking in Hot Springs, Ark. The Grand Old Party needs to get with the times. That's according to many Republicans who talked of the party's challenges following the GOP's electoral shellacking. (AP Photo/Danny Johnston, File)

(AP) ? Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal says the Republican Party needs to go back to basics to attract the broad coalition of voters credited with putting President Barack Obama back in the White House.

Kindergarten basics.

"If we want people to like us, we have to like them first," Jindal said on Fox News Sunday.

Former Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez has a more nuts-and-bolts approach to bringing in some of the largest and fastest growing groups of Americans: He's forming a super PAC to support Republican candidates who back comprehensive immigration reform, including legalizing the status of an estimated 11 million immigrants in the U.S. without authorization.

The 2012 elections drove home trends that have been embedded for years in the fine print of birth and death rates, immigration statistics and census charts. Nonwhites made up 28 percent of the electorate this year, compared with 20 percent in 2000, with Hispanics comprising much of that growth. Obama captured a commanding 80 percent of the growing ranks of nonwhite voters in 2012, just as he did in 2008. Republican Mitt Romney won 59 percent of non-Hispanic whites, and although he dominated among white men ? outperforming 2008 nominee John McCain among that group ? he couldn't win.

Republicans have spent much of the time since the election wrestling with ways to appeal beyond their base of white men and married women. Nonetheless, in a conference call to big donors last week, Romney credited Obama's win to "extraordinary financial gifts from government" he said the president gave groups in his base coalition: Latinos, African-Americans and young people.

Both Jindal and Gutierrez backed Romney's bid for the White House, but distanced themselves from his post-election comments.

Jindal, the incoming chair of the Republican Governors Association and a potential presidential candidate in 2016, on Sunday said slighting people simply isn't good politics.

"You don't start to like people by insulting them and saying their votes were bought. We are an aspirational party," he said.

Jindal said the Republican Party needs to convince voters it is the party of the middle class and upward mobility. Its conservative principles "are good for every single voter" and it "has to campaign for every single vote," he added.

"We also don't need to be saying stupid things," Jindal said, referring to GOP Senate candidates in Missouri and Indiana who lost their races after comments about rape that were widely criticized.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, the GOP group's incoming vice chair, said also on Fox News Sunday that governors are key to bringing a diversity of voters to the GOP. Thirty states have elected Republican governors, an indication that "the trust factor is there."

"We've got a message that works for young people, that works for people who come to our country from other countries, and, basically for anyone who wants to live their piece of the American dream," Walker said. "I think that starts with our governors as great messengers."

Gutierrez, who served under President George W. Bush, said the country cannot grow without immigrants and the Republican Party is a natural home for them.

"We are the party of prosperity, of growth, of tolerance," Gutierrez said in remarks taped Friday for CNN's "State of the Union." ''These immigrants who come across, and what they do wrong is risk their lives, and they come here and they work because they want to be part of the American dream. That is what the GOP is."

Gutierrez said he is working with Charlie Spies, who created the largest super PAC supporting Mitt Romney, Restore Our Future, on a super PAC to back candidates that support "a path, a process for legalization of workers who are here undocumented."

"First they have to be legalized," Gutierrez said. "Then you have to find a way to get into a line for the green card. ... There will be requirements. And we'll have to negotiate some sort of requirements."

Gutierrez said Republicans for Immigration Reform is about people from all over the world, including Hispanics, Asians, West Africans and Ethiopians.

"If we get this right... the 21st century is ours," Gutierrez said, referring to the GOP. "If we get it wrong, shame on us."

End U.S. Junk Food Subsidies Your Health Journal ... - Len Saunders

From UPI?..

U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, challenged members of Congress this week to end tax deductions for companies that sell junk food to children.

?Did you know that we?re actually giving tax deductions out to big companies that go ahead and advertise and market products that contribute to childhood obesity?? Kucinich asked in a floor speech on the day that Hostess Brands filed in bankruptcy court for permission to liquidate the company.

Kucinich introduced a bill ending deductions for junk-food companies and said such a move would help avoid the so-called fiscal cliff, The Hill reported Saturday.

Economists have warned the budget plan agreed to in 2011 ? allowing the debt ceiling to be raised in exchange for spending cuts and an end to tax rate cuts enacted during the administration of former President George W. Bush ? would send the economy over a ?fiscal cliff.?

The combination of spending cuts and higher tax rates would put the recovering economy back into a recession, economists have warned.
