Each and every day, myself, Ruck and Ryan hold discussions about the changes (good and bad) within the realm of online marketing and advertising. As you know, what is here today is gone tomorrow and the evolution of our world morphs and changes at break-neck speed. Recognizing this, let?s take a look at Native Advertising.
Native advertising is the incorporation of high quality content into the experience of a given platform or website. This advertising content does not detract from the user?s experience on the website or platform on which it is being used ? hence its suggested power.
With native advertising you are paying to be a part of the conversation within the subject matter of the content, where in display your are paying to interrupt the experience. Native advertising is not an advertorial on the latest pill-form diet solution or how you can sell back energy and get off the grid with some obscure solar energy motor. It is also not an automated form of advertising, nor will you find it inside of an ad box. Remember, it is instream ? organic content.
Banner advertising has been around since the beginning of the graphical web experience and through that time, these ads have largely lost their effectiveness as they offer no value.?Many users of the web are jaded when it comes to this type of ?in your face? advertising.
While banner ads can be relevant if they mirror the intentions of the consumable content, the media is losing steam. Translation ? banner ads are largely being ignored (rich media banners probably stand the best chance of getting clicks among static and gif). While we don?t expect banner inventory sales to take a massive crash or go away completely, we are suggesting that content based/driven advertisements could start appearing more across the web.
The most recognizable versions of native advertising that exist today are Facebook sponsored stories, promoted tweets and paid discovery (stumbleupon). Undoubtedly, you have seen these forms during your sessions on these sites. The success of this new form advertising is highly dependent upon the user experience. If there is true value within the content, it is the hope and aspiration of native advertising adopters that consumers will be more inclined to click through for more information.

After joining the mobile payment bandwagon last spring with Sail, VeriFone is ready to scale back its efforts in the venture. "Our experience through 2012 with tens of thousands of these micro-merchants tells us that the standalone economics of micro-merchant acquiring are fundamentally unprofitable," the firm's CEO, Doug Bergeron, said in a quarterly conference call. According to the head honcho, the cost of wrangling up new business users through ads and the like "will never justify the razor thin-margins produced by merchants with infrequent volumes and extremely high attrition." As a result of those costs and the risks of fraud associated with payments, the outfit will be handing off the user recruitment side of Sail to banks and "merchant acquirers," and plans to sell some of the platform's related assets. Despite the company's retreat from mobile payments, Bergeron considers the only way others could survive in the space is to provide merchants with auxiliary services, such as digital wallets, which competitors such as Square have begun to dabble in. VeriFone may have soured on mobile payments, but it's highly likely we'll see others give it the old college try as well.

Smokers are at risk for sudden cardiac death, but quitting can reduce that risk over time to levels seen among those who never smoked, a new study found.
Over a follow-up of 30 years, the risk of sudden cardiac death was significantly greater among smokers when compared with those who never smoked, according to Dr. Roopinder Sandhu of the University of Alberta in Edmonton and colleagues from Brigham & Women's Hospital and the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston.
Read this story on www.medpagetoday.com.
Past smokers also had an elevated risk overall, although it steadily declined with an increasing duration of cessation, reaching a level of risk within 20 years that was comparable to risk of those who never smoked, the researchers reported online in Circulation: Arrhythmia and Electrophysiology.
"Our data reinforces the important concept that sudden cardiac death risk associated with cigarette smoking is modifiable," they wrote, adding that "this suggests efforts to prevent sudden cardiac death among women should include aggressive strategies for smoking cessation."
Although smoking is a well-known risk factor for sudden cardiac death and coronary heart disease, few studies have examined the relationships between risk and quantity of cigarettes smoked, smoking duration, and smoking cessation.
Sandhu and colleagues explored those issues using data from the Nurses' Health Study of more than 100,000 women without known coronary heart disease, stroke, or cancer at baseline in 1980; 29.1 percent were current smokers, 26.4 percent were past smokers, and 44.5 percent had never smoked at baseline. The researchers accounted for changes in smoking status during the study.
Through 2010, there were 351 sudden cardiac deaths confirmed through medical records, autopsy reports, and interviews with family members.
In addition to smoking status, both quantity of cigarettes smoked each day and smoking duration were associated in a linear fashion with sudden cardiac death risk after adjustment for several coronary heart disease risk factors, including age, diabetes, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, body mass index, alcohol use, physical activity, menopausal status and postmenopausal hormone use, use of aspirin, multivitamins, and vitamin E, and family history of heart attack.
Even a small-to-moderate amount of smoking -- one to 14 cigarettes a day -- was associated with a higher risk compared with never smoking.
Every five years of continued smoking was associated with an 8% greater risk of sudden cardiac death.
Quitting, however, was associated with a declining risk. Within 20 years of quitting, the risk of sudden cardiac death -- compared with continuing smokers -- was similarly reduced in both past smokers and those who had never smoked.
That reduction in risk after quitting was more rapid among the women who did not develop coronary heart disease during follow-up compared with those who did (less than 5 years versus 15 to 20 years).
In women with coronary heart disease, the authors explained, "severe and/or vulnerable coronary atherosclerotic plaques and resultant myocardial fibrosis and scarring may confer a residual sudden cardiac death risk which persists for some time after smoking cessation."
"In contrast," they wrote, "the more immediate ... risk reduction observed among women without coronary heart disease may, in part, be explained by alleviation of acute pro-arrhythmic effects of nicotine such as reductions in catecholamine release, alteration of potassium handling, and lowering of ventricular fibrillation threshold caused by transient enhanced platelet adhesion."
The researchers acknowledged some limitations of the study, including possible misclassification of cigarette consumption based on self-report, possible error in determining sudden cardiac death, the lack of information about the severity of coronary heart disease events during follow-up, and potential residual or unmeasured confounding.
In addition, the study population was mostly white, female nurses, and the findings may not apply to other groups.

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon launched a $2.2 billion initiative on Tuesday to stamp out cholera over the next decade in impoverished Haiti, where an epidemic has killed thousands of people and been blamed on U.N. peacekeepers.
Cholera - an infection causing severe diarrhea that can lead to dehydration and death - has killed some 7,750 Haitians and sickened almost 620,000 since October 2010. It occurs in places with poor sanitation and can be treated with clean fluids.
An independent panel appointed by Ban to study the epidemic issued a May 2011 report that did not determine conclusively how the cholera was introduced to Haiti. But the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in June 2011 found that evidence strongly suggested U.N. peacekeepers from Nepal were the source.
The World Health Organization projects up to 112,000 cases in Haiti during 2012.
"Haiti has seen a dramatic fall in infection and fatality rates. But this will not be a short-term crisis. Eliminating cholera from Haiti will continue to require the full cooperation and support of the international community," Ban said.
Ban said Haiti needed $500 million to implement the first two years of the initiative, which will also address the spread of the cholera outbreak to neighboring Dominican Republic.
"The main focus is on the extension of clean drinking water and sanitation systems," Ban said. "But we are also determined to save lives now through the use of an oral cholera vaccine."
"Because global vaccines are in short supply, we will first target high-risk areas: densely populated urban areas and rural areas far removed from health services," he said. "As production increases, the vaccine effort will expand its reach."
Ban announced that $215 million in existing funds from donors would be used to support the initiative, while the United Nations would contribute $23.5 million on top of $118 million the U.N. system has already spent on the cholera outbreak.
"I will use every opportunity in the months ahead to mobilize even more funding," Ban said.
Haiti's Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe told Reuters in September that the epidemic was "regrettable" but had been brought under control. {ID:nL1E8KQ8WX]
Haiti is still struggling to lift itself from the rubble left by an earthquake in January 2010 that killed about 300,000 people and left more than 1.5 million homeless. Lamothe said 1.2 million of those had been moved back into homes, while the United Nations said 390,000 were still living in tent camps.

A masked gunman who opened fire in the crowded Clackamas Town Center mall in suburban Portland, Ore., killing two individuals and seriously injuring a third before killing himself, has been "tentatively" identified by police, though they have not yet released his name.
The shooter, wearing a white hockey mask, black clothing, and a bullet proof vest, tore through the mall around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, entering through a Macy's store and proceeding to the food court and public areas spraying bullets, according to witness reports.
Police have not released the names of the deceased. Clackamas County Sheriff's Department Lt. James Rhodes said authorities are in the process of notifying victims' families.
The injured victim has been transported to a local hospital, according to Clackamas County Sheriff Craig Roberts.
PHOTOS: Oregon Mall Shooting
Nadia Telguz, who said she was a friend of the injured victim, told ABC News affiliate KATU-TV in Portland that the woman was expected to recover.
"My friend's sister got shot," Teleguz told KATU. "She's on her way to (Oregon Health and Science University hospital). They're saying she got shot in her side and so it's not life-threatening, so she'll be OK."
Witnesses from the shooting rampage said that a young man who appeared to be a teenager ran through the upper level of Macy's to the mall food court, firing multiple shots, one right after the other, with what is believed to be a black, semi-automatic rifle.
More than 10,000 shoppers were at the mall during the day, police said. Roberts said that officers responded to the scene of the shooting within minutes, and four SWAT teams swept the 1.4 million-square-foot building searching for the shooter. He was eventually found dead, an apparent suicide.
"I can confirm the shooter is dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound," Rhodes said. "By all accounts there were no rounds fired by law enforcement today in the mall."
Roberts said more than 100 law enforcement officers responded to the shooting, and at least four local agencies were working on the investigation, including the FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, which is working to trace the shooter's weapon.
READ: Guns in America: A Statistical Look
"For all of us, the mall is supposed to be a place where we can take our families, especially during the holiday season," Roberts said. "Things like this are not supposed to happen."
Roberts also said that shoppers, including two emergency room nurses and one physician who happened to be at the mall, provided medical assistance to victims who had been shot. Other shoppers helped escort individuals out of the mall and out of harm's way, he said.
"There were a huge amount of people running in different directions, and it was chaos for a lot of citizens, but true heroes were stepping up in this time of high stress," Roberts said. "E.R. nurses on the scene were providing medical care to those injured, a physician on the scene was helping provide care to the wounded."
Mall shopper Daniel Martinez told KATU that he had just sat down at a Jamba Juice inside the mall when he heard rapid gunfire. He turned and saw the masked gunman, dressed in all black, about 10 feet away from him.
"I just saw him (the gunman) and thought, 'I need to go somewhere,'" Martinez said. "It was so fast, and at that time, everyone was moving around."
Martinez said he ran to the nearest clothing store. As he ran, he motioned for another woman to follow; several others ran to the store as well, hiding in a fitting room. They stayed there for an hour and a half until SWAT teams told them it was safe to leave the mall.
Witness Amber Tate said she was in the parking lot of the mall when she saw the shooter run by, wearing a mask and carrying a machine gun, headed for the Macy's.
"He looked like a teenager wearing a gun, like a bullet proof vest and he had a machine, like an assault rifle and a white mask and he looked at me," she said.
Other witnesses described the shooter as being on a mission and determined, looking straight ahead. He then seemed to walk through the mall toward the other end of the building, shooting along the way, according to witness reports.
Witnesses told KATU they heard "pops" and then saw the mall Santa fall to the ground. The man dressed as Santa, who did not give his name, told KATU that he wasn't concerned at first by what sounded like balloons popping.
"Then when I heard about 18 more shots, I decided it was a semi-automatic and I hit the floor and my employees must have just scattered and got out of there because when I got up there was nobody there but me," he said.
Others interviewed said that Macy's shoppers and store employees huddled in a dressing room to avoid being found.
"I was helping a customer in the middle of the store, her and her granddaughter and while we were looking at sweatshirts we heard five to seven shots from a machine gun fire just outside my store," Jacob Rogers, a store clerk, told KATU.
"We moved everyone into the back room where there's no access to outside but where there's a camera so we can monitor what's going on out front," Rogers said.
Evan Walters, an employee of a store in the mall, told ABC News Radio that he was locked in a store for his safety and he saw two people shot and heard multiple gunshots.
"It was over 20, and it was kind of surreal because we hear pops and loud noises," he said. "We're next to the food court here and we hear pops and loud noises all the time, but we don't -- nothing like that. It was very definite gunshots."
Former FBI agent and ABC News contributor Brad Garrett said the shooter's mask is typical for mass shooters, who often dress up in costume or wear something other than their regular clothes when they open fire in public.
"The biggest thing for a mass shooter is the control and empowerment for the shooting," he said. "It isn't uncommon for shooter to wear a costume, or sometimes simply to dress in black. In this case, apparently, he wore a hockey mask. He went there being someone other than who he is in reality because it gives him power."
Garrett called the shooting today one of the worst scenarios for law enforcement, as malls are more crowded than ever during the holiday shopping season.
"The thing about mass shooters is that they almost always are premeditated. They are planned," Garrett said. "This shooter I'm sure went through some period of steps before he actually reached going to mall, and there'll be signs or systems either through friends, online, through relatives that will play into understanding why he committed this act."

LONDON (AP) ? Jumpin' Jack Flash! A batch of love letters written by Mick Jagger to a 1960s muse have sold at auction for 187,250 pounds ($301,472).
Sotheby's says a private collector bidding by phone on Wednesday snapped up the Rolling Stones frontman's 10 letters to singer Marsha Hunt.
Hunt is an American-born singer who was the inspiration for the Stones' 1971 hit "Brown Sugar" and bore Jagger's first child.
The letters, touching on everything from the moon landing to John Lennon and Yoko Ono, were written in 1969 from the Australian set of Jagger's film "Ned Kelly."
They had been expected to fetch between 70,000 pounds and 100,000 pounds ($113,000 and $161,000).
Sotheby's books specialist Gabriel Heaton said the letters reveal "a poetic and self-aware 25-year-old with wide-ranging intellectual and artistic interests."
