Samsung Galaxy Nexus and Motorola Droid RAZR set to shine (Appolicious)

Shortly after the release of the iPhone 4S comes Android?s answer to Apple?s latest launch, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus running on the newly revealed Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. It?s a killer combo that marks Samsung as a premier Android developer, and makes Android all the more competitive in the smartphone market. Motorola also had a major launch this week with the Droid RAZR, while LG?s DoublePlay delivers a dual-screen device for business and pleasure.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus

From a facial recognition unlocking mechanism to the integrated voice typing, the new Samsung Galaxy Nexus is full of futuristic features designed to push the envelope. The specs are pretty much as expected, with a 4.65? sAMOLED screen, a 1.2 MHz dual-core processor, a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera and 1GB of RAM. The 4G device has a curved display that?s quite attractive, measuring slightly thinner than the iPhone 4S at its slimmest point. With software becoming the most important aspect of any mobile device these days, the Galaxy Nexus runs Android?s latest version, 4.0 (or Ice Cream Sandwich). It?s a sexy new device that comes with Android?s most powerful OS, up to the challenge of taking on Apple?s newest smartphone.

Motorola Droid RAZR

Motorola isn?t one to be left out, unveiling the Droid RAZR at a joint event with Verizon on the same day the Samsung Galaxy Nexus came out. As far as Android devices go, thin is in, as the Droid RAZR measures even slimmer than the Galaxy Nexus at 7.1mm. Running Android Gingerbread, the RAZR doesn?t get the perks of Ice Cream Sandwich (though it?s likely to be updated), but it does have an 8-megapixel rear camera. The RAZR also boasts a 1.2 GHz processor, 1GB of RAM and a 4.3? super AMOLED advanced QHD display. The device will be available in early November for $299.99 with a new two-year commitment to Verizon.

LG DoublePlay

We first heard about the LG DoublePlay a few weeks back, and the latest T-Mobile offering has finally been officially announced. LG?s DoublePlay is built for multitasking, with two screens for performing various functions. The first display measures 3.5 inches, and the smaller screen shares keyboard space, measuring just 2 inches. Surf the web or play games on one screen, and check emails or text messages on the other. Running Android 2.3 Gingerbread, the DoublePlay has a single-core 1GHz processor with a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash, and 720p video recording. No word on the exact pricing of the DoublePlay, but it?s rumored to hit shelves on November 2 for $149 with a contract.

Salman Rushdie: 'Game of Thrones' is garbage

Helen Sloan / HBO

Peter Dinklage won an Emmy for his portrayal of Tyrion Lannister on "Game of Thrones."

By Ree Hines

It may surprise some to learn that author Salman Rushdie fills much of his free time with the not-so-bookish habit of watching a whole lot of television. Even more surprising? In a recent interview, the unlikely, but very discerning boob tube junkie referred to the critically acclaimed and fan adored show ?Game of Thrones? as garbage.

Dylan Martinez / Reuters file

"In the end, it's well-produced trash," British author Salman Rushdie says of "Thrones."

Take heart, ?Thrones? fans ? if it softens the blow, Rushdie also called it ?very addictive garbage.?

As the ?Satanic Verses? author prepares to break into television himself with his upcoming Showtime series, ?The Next People,? he told Haaretz.com about some of the best and worst shows he?s watched to prepare.

"Everybody loves 'The Wire' and I think it's OK, but in the end it's just a police series,? Rushdie explained. ?I love 'The Sopranos.' 'Deadwood,' which didn't last long, was a series I liked a lot; it had more filthy language than I've ever heard on television anywhere in my life, but it was brilliantly written. I like some of what is on now, like 'Breaking Bad' and 'Dexter.'?

But that?s where his praise for current small screen offerings ended.

"I mean, there is always a lot of junk; most novels published are bad novels, most plays put on are bad plays, most movies that come out are bad movies and that is also true of TV,? he said. ?Nineteen times out of 20 you fall asleep. There was a series called 'Game of Thrones' which was very popular here in the United States, a post-Tolkien kind of thing. It was garbage, yet very addictive garbage -- because there's lots of violence, all the women take their clothes off all the time, and it's kind of fun. In the end, it's well-produced trash, but there's room for that, too.?

Recently, Rushdie has made a lot of room for it.

"I watched all that because if I am going to work in this field, I need to know what it is going on,? he added. ?I have been making myself have whole-series marathons to get the point of how it goes. I will soon start writing my little series." ???

What do you think about Rushdie's "Thrones" comments? Do you agree with him, or has he totally missed the show's appeal? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

Tanier: Parcells' tree thriving, but Dungy's the future

Few can match Parcells' overall success, but Dungy coaches are the future

Dallas Cowboys v New England PatriotsGetty Images

Bill Parcells, right, has perhaps the most successful coaching tree of any coach around. Having Bill Belichick on it helps a lot.

ANALYSIS

updated 10:40 p.m. ET Oct. 18, 2011

Mike Tanier

Once upon a time, just a few years ago, the NFL was flooded with Baby Belichicks.

Eric Mangini was the genius behind the Jets, then the Browns. Josh McDaniels was Denver's wunderkind. Romeo Crennel had just finished a four-year stint in Cleveland. Charlie Weis was not in the NFL, but as Notre Dame?s head coach, he was very much on the radar.

The Bill Belichick coaching Family Tree was in full bloom, but it entered dormancy swiftly. McDaniels and Mangini proved to have too many of Belichick?s faults (dictatorial attitude, risk-taking personnel style) and not enough of his virtues (the credibility and long-range vision that make being a risk-taking dictator pay off). Crennel and Weis slinked back to Coordinatorville.

The Belichick Family Tree may soon start sprouting again, but its sudden rise and fall serves as a reminder that analyzing ?coaching trees? is hardly an exact science.

More web than tree
Neat flowcharts like this one make coaching trees seem easy: Bill Walsh begets Mike Holmgren, who begets Andy Reid, who begets John Harbaugh. But many of the branches bear tenuous relationship with reality.

Who really thinks of Norv Turner as a Mike Nolan disciple? Who had more influence on Rex Ryan: Brian Billick or Ryan?s father, Buddy? (Listen to six seconds of a Rex Ryan press conference before answering). Many coaches can claim membership to multiple families. Raiders coach Hue Jackson worked under Marty Schottenheimer, Marvin Lewis, and John Harbaugh, among others, at various times in his long career. These trees are more like English hedgerows ? tightly knotted, complicated, and bustling with alarming interrelationships that are not easily untangled.

So the following countdown of the most important coaching families in the NFL is freshness dated to October, 2011. It is also based on some dead reckoning about who can be considered an influence over whom. Come January, there will be a fresh set of hires, and we may be talking about a new family tree (the Mike McCarthy branch?) or distancing ourselves from an assumption we are making now (that Jim Schwartz has officially turned the Lions around, for instance).

Despite the guesswork and the speculation, there are still some things we can learn by doing a little coaching genealogy: some trees are healthy, some are sickly, and some are just producing better fruit right now.

1. Bill Parcells Family
Two direct descendants of the Tuna, Belichick and Sean Payton, are among the league's most respected and successful coaches. Another recent Super Bowl winner, Tom Coughlin, served under Parcells with the Giants from 1988 to 1990, and his Parcells connections helped him land his current job as a the Giants coach (his Mara family-pleasing Boston College connections also had a little to do with it.) Two struggling coaches, Tony Sporano and Steve Spagnuolo, also have Tuna ties, Spags as a second-generation family member through Coughlin.

Ironically, while Parcells is often characterized as an iron-fisted despot, he was really a master delegator who assigned a great deal of responsibility to his subordinates. Both Belichick and Payton had almost free reign to develop their offensive and defensive schemes, and they enjoyed a degree of autonomy that served them well once they took on more responsibilities, though Belichick needed two tries to work the kinks out.

2. Tony Dungy Family
Mike Tomlin of the Steelers, Jim Caldwell of the Colts, and Lovie Smith of the Bears can all thank Tony Dungy for their head coaching jobs, in more ways than one. Dungy created a market for his Tampa-2 trained defensive assistants while blazing new trails for black head coaches. In addition to Tomlin, Caldwell, and Smith, Raheem Morris of the Buccaneers has strong Dungy ties, and Ron Rivera can be considered a second-generation Dungy scion, through his seasons with Lovie in Chicago.

Members of the Dungy Family Tree are all defensive coaches, and all run some variation on the Tampa-2 defense except Tomlin. Dungy could well be remembered a decade from now as the Bill Walsh of Defense, the Johnny Appleseed of both a defensive principal and a personal demeanor (authoritative, yet soft-spoken) that took over the whole league.

3. The Holmgren Family
The photograph of Mike Holmgren?s 1992 Packers staff is remarkable: Andy Reid, Steve Mariucci, Jon Gruden, and a bunch of other future head coaches standing around a staircase. The photograph was a staple of television broadcasts for so long that it is hard to believe how few first-generation Holmgren spawn are still in the league. There?s Reid, and there?s Pat Shurmur, whom Holmgren just hired in Cleveland, who was also a Reid assistant. Everyone else (Gruden, Dick Jauron and Ray Rhodes) is in a broadcast booth or the coordinator pool.

Reid now has his own family: Shurmur, John Harbaugh in Baltimore, Leslie Frazier in Minnesota. But Frazier is a defensive coach, and Harbaugh came up through the special teams ranks, so they are not traditional West Coast Offense gurus who trace their philosophies through Holmgren to Bill Walsh. This is a diffuse coaching tree that has gone a long way from its roots. Still, it left its mark. For about 15 years, the Holmgren-flavored Walsh offense dominated NFL strategy.

4. Old Line Bill Walsh Family
This is where lineages get tangled. Walsh launched the careers of so many assistants in the 1980s and early 1990s that numerous young coaches can claim kinship to Walsh through coaching branches that otherwise appear dead. Jim Harbaugh, for example, apprenticed under Bill Callahan. Mike Shanahan was an assistant under George Seifert, Walsh?s successor in San Francisco; Gary Kubiak of the Texans is a Baby Shanahan. Pete Carroll, John Fox, and Mike McCarthy can trace their roots back to Walsh via one branch or another.

This is a successful batch of coaches, but their kinship is more along the lines of third cousins than blood brothers. Shanahan and Kubiak may be able to trace their run-heavy strain of the West Coast Offense back to the Walsh era, but calling Carroll, a defensive coach who developed his current style at USC, a ?Walsh disciple? is pretty inaccurate. The fact that so many coaches, with so many styles, can claim Walsh as some sort of influence is a testament to Walsh?s unique legacy, but it tells us little about the coaches themselves, or what they may have in common.

KIT technology significantly reduces production costs of lithium-ion cells

This release is available in German.

The latest development by engineers of KIT is inspired by nature. To fill the porous electrodes of lithium-ion batteries more rapidly with liquid electrolyte, they use a physico-chemical effect that also provides for transport in trees. The new process increases the throughput of battery production and reduces investment costs. These and other innovations will be presented by KIT at the eCarTec International Electromobility Fair in Munich (hall A5, stand 323) from October 18 to 20.

The electrodes inside modern batteries are as porous as a sponge. Unlike household sponges, however, pore size is in the micrometer range. As a result, the electrode has a very large surface area and provides much space for the chemical processes during electric charge and discharge. This is necessary for developing batteries for electric vehicles that can cover large distances and be recharged rapidly. "But the pores have to be filled completely with the electro-lyte in order to work optimally," explains Dr. Wilhelm Pfleging from KIT. The liquid electrolyte is the transport medium, in which the charged ions can flow between anode and cathode in the battery. "Without electrolyte, there is no charge equalization inside and no current flow outside." The materials used in electrodes and the elec-trolyte of conventional high-energy batteries for automotive indus-try, however, provide for a bad wetting of the electrode surface by the liquid electrolyte only.

Consequently, much time and expenditure in battery production have been spent so far for making the electrolyte move into the smallest pore, if possible, and for maximizing battery capacity. The liquid is forced to enter the material by expensive and time-consuming storage processes at vacuum or elevated temperatures. "Our new process allows to reduce this time from several hours to a few minutes," confirms Pfleging. To achieve this amazing effect, he relies on nature. By a mechanico-chemical technology, the elec-trodes are modified such that the electrolyte is sucked into the bat-tery as water is sucked into high trees. As a result, the electrolyte spreads very rapidly over the complete material and performance data of batteries based on this principle are much better.

"This novel electrode modification drastically reduces the technical expenditure and production times needed for filling lithium-ion cells with electrolyte," acknowledges Andreas Gutsch. Under the Compe-tence E project, he coordinates the activities of more than 250 scientists at KIT to utilize the large innovation potential of a number of partial improvements and to further develop the entire system. "Now, an interdisciplinary team of physicists, chemists, materials researchers, and process engineers has succeeded in making an important step towards low-cost batteries." A patent has already been applied for. The process is planned to be integrated in the production lines of battery manufacturers as quickly as possible. "We are pushing licensing to close the innovation gap between development and industry as rapidly as possible. Several renowned companies have already asked for license contracts. At KIT, we are conducting excellent research for application, not for the drawer."

Hugo Chavez travels to Cuba for medical tests (AP)

CARACAS, Venezuela ? Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez returned to Cuba on Sunday to undergo a series of medical tests to evaluate his cancer treatment.

The president, who finished what he described as his fourth and final round of chemotherapy in Cuba last month, said he will be undergoing what he described as "rigorous examinations."

"I have faith that we'll get through these tests," said Chavez, speaking at Simon Bolivar International Airport before boarding a plane for Cuba.

Chavez, 57, underwent surgery in Cuba in June to remove a tumor from his pelvic region. He has not revealed what type of cancer he is battling, but he has said that tests have shown no signs of a recurrence.

The self-described revolutionary said he expects to return to Venezuela with a few days with "good news."

He did not elaborate.

Chavez, a former paratroop commander who was first elected in 1998, has repeatedly vowed to beat cancer, fully regain his health and sail to a victory in next year's presidential election.

He recently announced that doctors predict his hair will soon grow back, and even joked about growing an afro before he begins campaigning for next year's Oct. 7 vote.

Many Venezuelans, particularly the president's critics, are skeptical of his assurances that he's recovering. Some suspect that Chavez has not revealed all the details regarding his illness, concealing them like a confidential state secret, because he's in grave condition.

"The president must understand the country cannot continue with this uncertainty regarding his illness," said Gustavo Azocar, an opposition politician and radio talk show host who believes Chavez is unfit to continue governing. "He has attempted to hide the true circumstances of his health."

Azocar argues Chavez should step down.

"The president is not in physical condition to continue as president," Azocar said. "He should focus on his medical treatment and follow the instructions of his doctors."

Veteran newsman John Miller joins CBS News (Reuters)

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) ? John Miller, a veteran of both government and television, is coming back to the small screen as a senior correspondent for CBS News.

Jeff Fager, Chairman of CBS News, and David Rhodes, President of CBS News, made the announcement on Monday, emphasizing that Miller will contribute in the mornings.

CBS' "The Early Show" lags behind its networks rivals, NBC's "The Today Show" and ABC's "Good Morning America," in the ratings.

Though the press release says Miller will have a "major role" in the mornings, it also notes that he will report for all CBS News shows, including "60 Minutes."

"This is very exciting news for us. John is a man of many talents and one of them is that he is an extraordinary reporter," Fager said in a statement. "It will be great to get him back on the air again, even better that he will be on CBS."

As Fager mentions, Miller has not been on the air for a few years thanks to his latest stint in government. He has worked in the Office of the Director of National Intelligence since 2005.

This jump back to reporting is but the latest instance in which Miller, who began working for a WNEW, a local new York station, back in 1973, has alternated between government and television.

He has also served as a correspondent for ABC News, co-hosted ABC's "20/20" and worked for the New York City Policy Commissioner.
