Shawn Parr: What Is At The Intersection Where Innovation And ...

There has been a lot of talk about ?intersections? lately?intersections of business and art, intersections of marketing and nature, intersections of technology and health, and so on.

I recently became involved in a conversation about intersections through the new annual event, The Intersection Event, which examines the intersection between business innovation and social change. This year?s event was set inside of Pixar Animation Studios, and next year?s is slated to be held in January at the Googleplex. But more interesting than their backdrops, which are arguably among the most creative in the country, is the question they?re trying to answer: ?Can business innovation and social change effectively create a symbiotic relationship??

I recently had the opportunity to chat with the founder, Randy Haykin, to learn more about this interesting intersection.

How do you define the intersection of innovation and social change?

A great question because this idea of holding an event called ?Intersection? seems to be hitting a chord with a lot of people?they recognize that business innovation and social change are related?but how? As a serial entrepreneur, teacher, and mentor to startups over the years, I?ve seen hundreds of examples of business innovation?in both large and small startups. In the past, much of this innovation has been targeted to making better, faster, cheaper products and services. More products, more companies, more investments equals more money. Unfortunately, in the past, innovation has not been focused on a better lifestyle, improved standard of living, healthy environment, or a safe world for billions of people who live below the poverty line around the world.

As a professor working with many of tomorrow?s future leaders at UC Berkeley and University of Cambridge, I?ve noticed a change in the past five years. Many students no longer just ask, ?How can I make more money?? Increasingly, they are beginning to ask, ?How can I make the greatest impact??

Meanwhile, environmental concerns and poverty have caused many global corporations to focus on ?CSR? (Corporate Social Responsibility) and take responsibility for things beyond profits, such as community, environment, and education. That means the focus both at a university and a corporate level has shifted. We will see a swing in global consciousness as a new set of social entrepreneurs use innovation to effect positive social change. The swing in consciousness is the intersection between innovation and social change. The new consciousness says, ?How can I use new innovative models, products, practices, and thinking to impact those issues that are our greatest enemies as human beings??

With all the changes going on, it is easy to observe examples of the intersection of innovation and social change in all walks of life. Examples of this are already in play: Innovations in social media affect political balance (think Egypt, Syria, and the IAVA); innovations in technology affect biotech, agriculture, food and oil production (think Water.org or Solayzme); innovations in business models affect the ways that goods and services from Africa, India, and Latin America can be brought to the rest of the world (think Kiva.org or World of Good), and there is so much more that it?s dizzying to keep up with it each week.

How do you think social innovation will influence the future?

We are already seeing signs of this. The first wave was the outsourcing of labor among countries in the 1980s. In the 1990s we began to see that the world was interconnected financially and via the Internet. We?ve transformed in the first decade of this century to a truly global economy, one in which companies do create and sell their products on a global scale and, unfortunately, one in which a ?sneeze? in Greece affects the entire global financial scene. Today we are seeing that the effects of the Internet, communication technologies, and social media are transforming the way teams, companies, countries, and continents relate to one another. We are living in a time where there is the potential for rapid social change unlike any other in history.

Against this backdrop, innovation has the potential to shape the future of most of the major social issues of our time.Take global health, for example. Using innovative technologies and techniques, the Gates Foundation has been able to nearly eradicate polio by focusing on a multi-national and holistic solutions. The same is true in education. The old collegiate system of the past is about to crumble in the next 10 years and university ?brands? are likely to give way to new, nimble ways of educating people?it?s the experience that the university provides which will be valued, rather than the diploma or brand. The same will be the case for poverty issues, environmental concerns, and energy consumption.

How do you predict the ?Intersection Event? will shape the future of social innovation?

The ?Intersection Event? is developed by The Gratitude Network as a means of bringing together innovative thinkers from a variety of fields who have an interest in making a difference. The Gratitude Network was designed to fund social entrepreneurs who have revolutionary ideas that can have local, regional, or national impact on social issues.

The Intersection is a unique way to bring together thought leaders from a variety of fields and draw out the intersections in thinking that are most likely to lead to new discoveries, ways of thinking, relationships, and connections. We?ve designed this inaugural event to cover a variety of topics from personal innovation to team creativity to entrepreneurial innovation and then look at ways in which each of these areas impacts social change.
What is the most important lesson you?ve learned?

I used to think ?creativity? meant Picasso. What I now know is that some of the most creative energy on the planet is bundled up in the minds of our founders, entrepreneurs, and young leaders. Entrepreneurial spirit has positively affected the U.S. economy dramatically in the past 40 years, and I think it will drive economies in the future. Those parts of the world that apply new rules of how to intersect with these entrepreneurs, by providing the best environment for them to operate out of, will be the long-term growth economies of the 21st century.

What are the most important benchmarks for social innovation?

In the last few centuries, major technological inventions?the birth of automotive and aviation industries, the invention of the telephone, the discovery of DNA?have played a role in social change. But these inventions were not driven by a desire for social change. They produced a social outcome as a by-product. They were mostly inspired by scientific achievement, discovery, or the profit motive.

We can look at milestones in terms of technology, applications of this technology, or ways in which the applications were enabled by a system of funding. The system of funding intrigues me as a former VC the most.

The old method of appropriation was public funding. But in the U.S. today, it is clear that this is no longer working. We cannot solve our present social issues in this country or elsewhere around the world through the use of public funds or government agencies. Bipartisan issues now bog down any progress we can conceive of.

To me, new forms of innovative funding are the things that drive. Following is a list of financial innovations we?ve seen in the past 40 years in the area of social?change:

1976: Grameen Bank & Opportunity International founded
1981: Ashoka founded by Bill Drayton
2001: Acumen Fund founded by Jacqueline Novogratz
2004: Facebook founded by Mark Zuckerberg
2005: Kiva.org founded by Matt Flannery & Jessica Jackley

What philosophy is at the heart of your organization?

That philosophy is this: Some of the greatest inventions the world has seen were developed incrementally as one person built on another?s ideas, sometimes transcending decades or even centuries between them. What makes for a real innovation is that someone takes a previous idea and juxtapositions it in new light, or with a new twist, or in a new context. That means finding the intersection between the original observation or thought and the new environment or situation. The most fertile areas for innovation?and the most new ideas?are likely to occur at the intersection of several great minds.

Earnings Too High To Claim Passive Losses? | Bankrate.com

George SaenzDear Tax Talk,

I got married in 2011. My taxable income is $106,000 and my wife's is $50,000. We just got our taxes done, and because our combined income was more than $150,000, our tax preparer told us we could not use any of our business losses from our rental houses. This fact made our taxes increase for 2011 by $4,700. Is our tax preparation guy correct, or is he missing something?

Thanks.
-- Tom

Dear Tom,
Your tax guy is correct. The more you make, the fewer tax breaks you get. One of those tax breaks that goes away as your income exceeds certain thresholds is the allowance of passive losses against nonpassive and portfolio income such as salary and interest income.

Rental real estate is considered a passive activity, the losses from which are only allowed against passive income. Passive income is income from business activities in which you don't materially participate, including other rental activities.

As always is the case in tax law, there are exceptions. Taxpayers whose modified adjusted gross income, or MAGI, is less than $100,000 can claim up to $25,000 in rental losses. The $25,000 cap is reduced $1 for every $2 a taxpayer's MAGI exceeds $100,000. For example, a MAGI of $110,000 exceeds $100,000 by $10,000 so the $25,000 limit is reduced to $20,000. At $150,000, the reduction to the cap is the full $25,000, which is your situation. Any losses you can't claim are carried over to future years and allowed as a deduction against passive income, including gain on the sale of the property. If your income were to go below the thresholds, then you would also be able to claim the losses, including those carried over.

(AP) ? Florida Sen. Marco Rubio says Republican Mitt Romney will win the White House, but not with Rubio on the ticket.

Rubio was asked about his prospects during an appearance Wednesday in Palm Beach Gardens. He said: "I'm not going to be the vice president."

The tea party favorite also was asked about a suggestion by former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush that Rubio is the clear choice to be Romney's running mate. Rubio responded by returning the favor and saying he thinks the former governor would be a great vice president.

Rubio endorsed Romney last week.

Free apps drain smartphone energy on 'advertising modules'

ScienceDaily (Apr. 4, 2012) ? Researchers have shown that popular free smartphone apps spend up to 75 percent of their energy tracking the user's geographical location, sending information about the user to advertisers and downloading ads.

"It turns out the free apps aren't really free because they contain the hidden cost of reduced battery life," said Y. Charlie Hu, a Purdue University professor of electrical and computer engineering.

Because smartphone batteries must be small and lightweight, power consumption is a major issue, the researcher said. He has led work to create a new tool called eprof -- for energy profiler -- to analyze how much energy a smartphone app consumes.

New findings show that 65 percent to 75 percent of the energy used to run free apps is spent for advertising-related functions.

"We performed an in-depth case study, the first of its kind, of six popular smartphone apps, including Angry Birds, Facebook and Android Browser," said Purdue doctoral student Abhinav Pathak.

The free Angry Birds app was shown to consume about 75 percent of its power running "advertisement modules" in the software code and only about 25 percent for actually playing the game. The modules perform marketing functions such as sharing user information and downloading ads.

"We believe it is mainly to provide information about the user's geographical location so the ads can be more targeted or customized to that location," Hu said.

Findings will be detailed in a research paper being presented during the EuroSys 2012 conference on April 10-13 in Bern, Switzerland. The paper, written by Pathak, Hu and Ming Zhang, a researcher at Microsoft Research, also suggests a general approach for improving the energy efficiency of smartphone apps.

An application may contain tens of thousands of lines of code, broken down into many components called subroutines, threads and processes. Eprof maps how much energy comes from each component, representing a new way for researchers to study smartphone energy consumption without using a power meter, an expensive and cumbersome piece of laboratory equipment.

"This is the first tool of its kind ever developed for modern smartphones," Pathak said. "We've seen around 1 million apps written since smartphones emerged roughly five years ago, but there has been no systematic way for the developer to see how much energy the different components consume. Using this tool, you can see what should be changed to improve energy efficiency."

The smartphone power drain is caused by a combination of factors including inefficient programs and software glitches called "energy bugs," Hu said.

"Eprof tells you how much energy is spent where," he said. "This may be due to energy bugs or other reasons."

In one case, a piece of advertising software embedded in a free app failed to turn off its connection to the Internet, a function called a socket, requiring another piece of code to resolve the problem and wasting energy.

Inefficient power usage is most likely to occur in interactive programs, which are prevalent in smartphone apps such as games and applications that heavily use built-in phone gadgets like GPS, the camera, compass and "proximity sensor."

A particular source of power inefficiency is a phenomenon called "tails." In principle, after an application sends information to the Internet, the "networking unit" that allows the phone to connect to the Internet should go to a lower power state within a fraction of a second. However, researchers found that after the advertising-related modules finish using the network, the networking unit continues draining power for about seven seconds.

"The past assumption has been that, whenever you see usage you have power consumption, and when there is no usage there is no power consumption," Hu said. "This does not hold true for smartphones."

The tails are a phenomenon of several smartphone hardware components, including 3G, or third-generation wireless systems, GPS and WiFi, not flaws within the app software itself. However, software developers could sidestep the problem by modifying apps to minimize the effect of tails, Hu said.

"Any time you use the 3G network, there will be a tail after the usage," Hu said. "The ad module in Angry Birds obviously uses 3G for network uploading and downloading, while the game itself did not, which is why we blame the ad module for the tail."

Battery drain in smartphones has emerged as a fundamental problem.

"We've been hearing about major problems lately in power usage," Hu said. "A smartphone battery is generally expected to last a day before recharging, but we're hearing about mysterious instances where the battery runs out in a few hours. Users have been complaining about this on Internet forums."

Findings in the paper suggest a way to improve energy efficiency with a technique that has been shown to reduce the energy consumption of four apps by 20 percent to 65 percent.

The ultimate goal is to develop an "energy debugger" that automatically pinpoints flaws in software and fixes them without the intervention of a human software developer, Hu said.

Eprof mirrors a tool created three decades ago called gprof, which tracks how much time is consumed by software components.

"If a program runs for three hours, gprof tells you how much time is spent on each subroutine," Hu said. "We've taken this to a whole new level with eprof to show how much energy is consumed."

The same researchers first created a model making the new profiler tool possible and presented a paper about the model at last year's EuroSys conference. The model estimates how much power a smartphone is using while an app is running.
