Trev Meaney Interview Part 1 ? The Lancashire Writing Hub

Trev Meaney

Biography: Trev Meaney is a spoken word/performance poet with 10 years of performance training and experience, including a BA (Hons) Drama and Creative Writing. He?processes a fast paced style with plenty of humour and ranges from political, to social observations to the damn right ludicrous. He has worked on many creative/artistic projects?as well as having performed at Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Kendal Calling Festival, Manchester Comedy Festival, Kendal Brewery Arts Centre, as well as for the Saatchi Gallery, plus many more. He also looks forward to performing at the Cheltenham Poetry Festival and the Cloudspotting Festival this year. In 2011 Trev won the open mic prize slam at Spotlight Lancaster and was published in ?Poetry Rivals? ? Forward Poetry?s end of year anthology. Born in his beloved southern Ireland he has lived in the wonderfully historical city of Lancaster for many years now.

Introduction: The LWH theme for May is Place.? Trev Meaney?s tremendous poem, Eire to me,?is the seventh and final of a collection of Place pieces commissioned by the Pretend Boss.?Trev has written about Ireland and there?s a video of?him performing?his poem if you click on the title or HERE (sorry if the syncing is a bit out).

Also, Trev agreed to be interviewed.? Part 1 of the interview is below and Part 2 will appear in an hour.

I particularly like?Trev because he?s observant, sensitive and?fall-over funny.? I also like him because he laughed?loudly at? something I was reading once (it was meant to be funny) and then came to me afterwards to tell me how much he?d enjoyed the story. Yes, he is that sensitive and yes, I am that shallow. However -?a word?to the wise?-?NEVER agree to be on stage after Trev Meaney; you might as well go home and?shampoo your tea-cosy collection.

KM. Hello Trev. Thank you for speaking to me. First of all, congratulations on being appointed Lancaster Library Poet in Residence!? I attended you first soiree, which was a sensational talent-fest.? What other plans do you have for the library?

TM. Thank you very much! Also thanks for coming along. I have many plans for the library but I am concentrating more on live poetry events, to give both established and less established poets a platform to show their poetry. It?s also an opportunity to showcase the wealth of talent Lancaster has as well as surrounding areas. I am also going to organise some open mic nights. However my partner and I, are expected our first child so I have to hold fire on organising events for a little while. I am also taking an active part in reading groups and working with high schools within the library.

KM. Many congratulations. Babies are the best thing! I hope all goes well. I believe you studied Drama and Creative Writing; where?

TM. Yes that?s right! I studied BA Hons Drama as my major and creative writing as my minor. It was at St Martin?s College, now known as the University of Cumbria.

KM. That?s where I did my Creative Writing degree, too! How spooky! (what with us having nearly the same initials and all). Some people are sceptical about whether creative writing can be taught; would you advise aspiring writers to go to university to learn about the craft? (do you think craft sound a bit poncey??)?

TM. I?m not sure to be honest. All I can say is, yes I did study, therefore I should have learnt the art of writing creatively. However, I didn?t really commit to studying whilst at uni but more so committed myself to lots of late nights and work related avoidance tactics. Perhaps I subconsciously picked up a few techniques up along the way but apart from that, what I have in regards to being creative is basically as they say ?au natural? (in the beauty industry?) and as for writing, grammar, punctuation etc, I probably learnt the basics at school, but then again I wasn?t half cooked through out that period of my life. I reckon if you apply yourself to a creative writing course you will most definitely be taught the fundamental rules and skills, but then it?s up to the individual.

KM. Have you always written?

TM. I used write, very much in secret and would have been horrified had anyone clapped eyes on my poems. It was a case of scribbling some words on a scrap of paper, wondering how profound it might sound and not actually feeling something that was true to me. I used to think ?Oh no, this will never be accepted?there?s not enough references to winter or blossoming violets and a lack of ?clever? words?. I almost felt ashamed, not good enough, not wise enough! But then I saw performance poetry! I discovered incorporating my drama training with my poetry gave me the confidence to express my words. Now I seem to get a bit aroused by the site of a pen and paper.

KM. Gosh! And are there particular individuals who have influenced your writing career?

TM. I?m very much a fan Irish author, Roddy Doyle. I love how everything he describes is jammed packed with comedy, poignancy, sentiment, and general Irish-ness. But that?s a far as it goes really.? I Enjoy a wide spectrum of authors and writers, but mainly to just have a gander at. What I find most influential is my surroundings, the people I see who walk around, unassumingly doing their business whilst I observe. The North is full of potential writing material.

KM. I know ? you can?t take three steps without tripping over inspiration can you?

to be continued?

Evans finishes 6th in 800 at Olympic tuneup meet

IRVINE, Calif. (AP) ? Janet Evans finished sixth in the 800-meter freestyle Sunday at the Speedo Grand Challenge in the former Olympic champion's final tuneup meet before the Olympic trials next month when she'll try to make the U.S. team at 40.

Haley Anderson, who also competes in open water swimming, won the race in 8 minutes, 33.65 seconds. The 20-year-old swimmer who swims at Southern California will try to make the London Olympics in an open-water qualifier June 9 in Portugal.

Anderson raced former Olympian Kate Ziegler to the wall, with Ziegler touching second in 8:33.97.

"She really pushed it so that made me get in an extra gear," Anderson said.

Ziegler won the 200 and 400 freestyles earlier in the three-day meet, and will try to qualify for her second straight Olympic team at the trials in Omaha.

"I wanted to be a little faster than that," she said.

Megan Rankin, an 18-year-old who trains with Evans, was third.

Evans finished in 8:49.36. She stayed close to the top three in the early stages of the 16-lap race before fading in the second half of the eight-woman race. She was the first woman to win back-to-back Olympic titles in the 800 in 1988 and '92.

"It was a little disappointing, but I think she's tired from training," said Mark Schubert, Evans' longtime coach.

During her comeback, Schubert has tinkered slightly with Evans' famed windmill stroke in which her head and shoulders come up out of the water more than most swimmers.

"We tried to get her head down and get her to swim in and out of her turns a little better, which she's doing," Schubert said. "You don't make huge changes. It's just trying to figure out the right things to do the last four or five weeks before trials."

Three-time Olympian Jason Lezak won the 100 free in 49.96, the only man under 50 seconds in the final. He carried 2-year-old son Ryan on the awards podium.

"I had a real solid first 50 and coming off the wall, I did what I wanted to do," he said. "The last 15 was a little painful, but with rest I'll be able to take it out faster, easier and come back stronger. I was 50.4 at the previous meet and I really wanted to be under 50, so that was good."

British Olympian Ellen Gandy won the 200 butterfly in 2:09.83 to go with her victory in the 100 fly on Saturday. She clutched a check for $600 covering her earnings in her first U.S. meet. She also earned gift cards to a coffee shop and a bookstore.

"I really wanted to get an iPhone, so this will go nicely toward that," she said, adding that she plans to buy the phone before she returns to Australia, where she lives with her family and trains.

Nick D'Arcy, considered a strong medal contender for Australia's Olympic team, easily won the 200 fly in 1:57.16, a meet record. He was the only swimmer to go under 2 minutes in the race.

"For the kind of pressure we're under at the moment training-wise, it's a pretty good swim," he said. "It's about where I expected to be at."

D'Arcy missed the 100 fly final Saturday night because he was in the restroom with an upset stomach when the finalists were called to the starting blocks. He was disqualified in that event, but wasn't prevented from swimming Sunday because the races were running ahead of the estimated timeline.

"It was pretty unfortunate," he said. "We're over here to get in some good racing, but I did a time trial instead and went a 53.7 which is a good time for me, so I was still pretty happy about that."

Earlier this month, Australian Olympic Committee President John Coates defended D'Arcy's selection amid accusations of a secret deal to put him on the team. He missed the 2008 Beijing Olympics and 2009 world championships after being convicted of assaulting former swimmer Simon Cowley in a Sydney bar in March 2008.

D'Arcy was ordered to pay $370,000 in damages and costs, but declared bankruptcy. He earned $300 for his win at this meet.

Cowley, whose face had to be surgically rebuilt after the assault, said in a report in several Australian newspapers that Swimming Australia was involved in a secret deal to allow D'Arcy back into the team despite ethical concerns.

As he was asked about Cowley's comments, D'Arcy told a reporter, "Careful." He then brushed past, saying, "Yeah, thanks for your time."

Vlad Morozov, a former Russian national team member, won the 100 backstroke in a meet record 54.67 over former Australian Olympian Ashley Delaney. He touched in 54.74.

Four swimmers instead of the usual eight made the finals except in the distance events at this meet as a way to get athletes to swim faster in the preliminaries. The swimmer with the fastest time going into the final spins a wheel to determine the prize money that goes to the winner. Second and third-place finishers receive nominal amounts and all four finalists receive a gift card of their choice.

Bridget Beari Design Chat: My "A-HA" moment!

My " A-HA" Moment

My moment has to be 16 years ago while driving around Richmond Virginia with fianc? looking at houses. He is 6'5' and I'm 5'4"; he's from a South Caroline beach town and I like older historic homes; he likes big open spaces and I like charm. We were starting to wonder if we would ever agree on a house.?

While driving we happened upon this Greek Revival stucco with an open house sign. It is in a historic neighborhood of RIchmond which appealed to me. ?The house was not yellow at the time but white. We walked in the front door and both of us knew this was OUR house!?

When I showed my mother pictures of the inside of the house, she was horrified. Navy trim, peach wall to wall carpet, red moire wallpaper.... It was all very 80's but I could see the beautiful moldings, gorgeous Carrera fireplace covered in soot, and prefect proportions. This was my A-HA moment, a chance to turn a house back into something classic and beautiful.?

By mixing my grandmothers Empire sofa with Barbara Barry chairs, I was able to create a room that evoked a sense of past and present. A custom designed coffee table, snake skin mirror and fire screen give the room a contrast of textures and materials. They are the perfect offset to the quilted ball gown draperies that accentuate the tall windows. ??

This house bought together everything we loved: our family antiques, room for our modern art collection, a showcase for my design work, and a sense of restoring history. We have tweaked and changed things throughout the years but this house will always represent my A-Ha moment because it was vision of what could be! It is my studio, my laboratory for ?Bridget Beari Colors, and my LOVE!?

I hope you enjoyed a little glimpse into my life and thoughts! Until tomorrow......

Jogging Tips to Find Better Health, Fitness, and Weight Loss | Music ...

New Era Fitted Caps Millions all over the world love running, or jogging if you prefer, because there are so many great health and wellness benefits. While some places are more conducive to enjoyment, it doesn?t matter because running is something that can be done anywhere and on almost any surface. In this article, we?ll be looking at some important principles to keep in mind when running.

When you choose to run for a living, you need to make sure you stick to your plan. Many people are really enthused with a running routine when they first start, but sometimes people can go overboard with it. This is when these people usually get hurt, and then they?ll put off their running for many months. If you want to get fit from running, don?t do it that way. The way to do it is to go slow at first and then stay on track. It?s good to jog or run at least three times per week, for at least thirty minutes. Don?t worry about how fast or slow you?re going, especially when you?re first beginning. You will always get more out of running if you just do it without worrying about how fast you?re going, instead of going too hard until you burn out. While it?s true that it?s never good to run when you don?t feel well or when you have an injury, you are still going to have to push your body at times. If you are one of those people who always has an excuse not to run, such as not having time, then you?re not going to stick with your running routine for long, that?s for sure.

If you?ve never run anywhere except to the bathroom, then it?s highly recommended by a lot of people to begin small and with power walking. If you are not used to exercise, or haven?t done it for a long time, walking can be a great way to gradually get your body accustomed to moving around. It does not matter at all how fast or slow you begin, the important thing is to get started. When you feel comfortable, you can move from a power walk to a jog, until you reach a pace that seems right for you. You don?t want to overdo it and cause an injury because that will only set you back as you heal. Power walking can be a healthy and beneficial activity in itself, and people who cannot run because of an injury or health problem can power walk instead. We still recommend walking first because it?s a safe and effective way to get used to running.

You need to stay healthy and avoid injuries to get the most out of jogging. Jogging is great for your fitness but it can also cause some injuries.

You need to listen to your body and watch for warning signs to reduce your risk of injuries. Pushing yourself too hard is not a good idea. You should gradually increase you speed and distance, starting slowly. If you feel any sharp pains, stop running, and if the pain doesn?t go away, see your doctor. Pay attention to how you feel while running because if you push too hard, you will end up doing more harm than good. In conclusion, use the techniques for jogging that we just talked about to get your health back to where you want it to be, and also so that you keep your motivation high. Remember that if you hope to get in shape using running, you have to make the activity a part of what you do on a daily basis. That?s why it?s so important to be careful and sensible when you run or jog, so you?ll be able to keep going with a minimum of problems to slow you down.

Top Investing Advice To Succeed In The Stock Market | Online Stock ...

Investing in the stock market can be extremely confusing, even for professional investors. Trading is a great way to make money, but it is also a risky activity. Investing your money wisely will be easy thanks to the advice you?ve read here, so get started today!

International stocks should not be overlooked when you want to make sure your portfolio is diversified. Sticking to your own country is a great idea to start, but adding international stocks can help to diversify your portfolio. If you are a beginner or do not feel you know much about international economies, think about buying international mutual funds instead.

Keep going over your portfolios and looking for ways to improve it. Watch what your stocks are doing, which are doing well and which aren?t, and consider what you need to do to keep it in order. You shouldn?t be checking every day, though; instead check every month or bimonthly so that you do not become too anxious with the frequent fluctuations of the stock market.

Don?t get discouraged if your investments seem to lose money at the start. A lot of people find themselves discouraged when the stocks they chose don?t take off. Investing in the market takes knowledge, research, practice, and experience to be like a professional so remember that if you are thinking about giving up.

Opening a Roth IRA is a great investment for residents of the USA. But remember that it needs to be well funded. Generally, those belonging to the working and middle classes qualify. Roth IRA?s provide tax relief and other benefits to investors, and they can therefore turn into vehicles that result in large yields.

You could invest in stocks through vehicles like your retirement plan and 401K. Although, you won?t have access to these funds without penalty until retirement, the plus is you save a lot of money on taxes in these types of accounts Investing in stocks through a retirement fund will build your nest egg for when you really need it.

It is important to realize that unexpected upswings are likely to occur from time to time. However, the same is true for negative events that push down your stock?s price. Therefore, it is crucial you are aware of this when you do invest in a company. Generally one occurrence leads to other consequences bad or good.

On the modest side, the long-term returns for a mix of conservative stocks can be about eight percent, while in good times the yearly returns can reach double digits. There are other options that can even go beyond that amount. Deciding when and how to invest your money requires a great deal of consideration, but when done correctly, you will not regret your decisions.

You might even want to take the time to learn more about accounting and money, in general. While it is not necessary to have an accounting degree, it won?t hurt to take a few basic accounting classes. This will help you invest wisely in the stock market, understanding the scoring systems and basing your decisions on sound information. Even investing gurus such as Warren Buffet espouse the value of educating yourself.

As you can see by now, there are many things that can be done to ensure your money remains safe while you take advantage of the stock market. Rather than taking chances, integrate the information here into your trading strategies to increase the probability of earning a good return on your investments.

Need to tackle hindrances to broadband access ? The Punch ...

Minister of Communications Technology, Mrs. Omobola Johnson

There seems to be a consensus that it is important for Nigeria to quickly deploy broadband infrastructure and harness its benefits for economic development. DAYO OKETOLA examines on what the Federal Government is doing in this regard

Universal access to broadband has become a significant indicator of development and competitiveness globally. Statistics have shown that every 10 per cent increase in access to broadband in developing countries results in a commensurate 1.38 per cent increase in Gross Domestic Products. As such, experts say any country seeking growth, job and wealth creation must address how it can increase its access to broadband.

In view of this, broadband discourse has permeated the Nigerian Information and Communications Technology industry since the $240m Main One submarine cable and $800m Glo I cable landed in the country.

Experts say this is expected because the country?s over 95 million active mobile users have yet to benefit from the huge broadband capacity provided by Main One, Glo One and other subsea cables due to inadequate last mile infrastructure. The cost of Internet access is still high while the speed remains abysmally slow.

As such, ensuring that Nigeria is able to quickly deploy broadband infrastructure and harness the benefits therein have been the crux of the consistent industry engagement and discussions.

While some countries have gone as far as defining access to broadband (or super fast Internet) as a fundamental human right, Nigeria?s broadband access remains low at six per cent.

The Minister of Communications Technology, Mrs. Omobola Johnson, says, ?Despite the fact that we have Internet penetration of 28 per cent (45 million Internet users), only nine per cent (14.5 million people) of the population are actually Internet subscribers and broadband penetration is at a mere six per cent.

?Though access to broadband using mobile phones (smartphones) is increasing, (thereby increasing the number of subscribers) what this statistic tells us is that most Nigerians still access the Internet through public venues (offices, cyber cafes, computer labs). This is as a result of not only the lack of ubiquity of the broadband network but also the cost of access.?

The minister laments that Nigeria currently has one of the highest costs of access in the world at approximately N8 to N10 for 5Mbs of data.

?In fact, recent statistics that I looked at have us as having one of the lowest speeds in Africa,? Johnson adds.

She reiterates that broadband has become a critical ICT infrastructure, saying the goal of the government is to achieve one national network capable of delivering broadband speeds not less than 50 per cent of the average speeds available worldwide at the consumer end within the next five years.

To achieve this, the minister says the government will encourage and enforce the principle of open access/infrastructure sharing to already build transmission networks in order to facilitate an integrated national backbone.

This, she says, has become imperative to expand the building of an integrated national backbone to achieve point of presence in all local government areas in the country. This will be complemented with the adoption of a progressive fibre build up to connect all state capital, as well as the creation of city rings in all major cities.

Some of the things the ministry will do to achieve ubiquitous broadband access in the country, Johnson says, is to remove the bottlenecks and arbitrary additional costs to infrastructure layout such as the cost of right-of-way and conflicting environmental regulations.

Specifically, she says the ministry will collaborate with the Ministry of Environment to resolve conflicting regulations to remove all known and unknown bottlenecks to base station approval.

Emphasising that broadband is a catalyst to economic development, Johnson says government goal is to increase ICT contribution to GDP by, at least, 1.5 per cent by 2015. To actualise this, she says the ministry will facilitate local content development in mobile applications, media and entertainment and support SME untilisation of ICTs. According to her, it is important to get more Nigerian business online as well as increase domestic value added services in the ICT industry.

The minister also says it is important to deepen broadband access for effective and transparent government and governance. This, according to her, will be done by delivering government services via the Internet and improving government to citizen engagement. This will entail creating a single window portal to facilitate easy access to government information.

She says all government MDAs will have functioning websites of the same/similar standards by the end of 2014.

In view of this, the minister discloses that the Federal Government has deployed 86,089 email addresses for government on.gov.ng domain names.

The move, according to her, is in line with the government?s vision to ensure that all its MDAs are migrated from their existing disparate domain names to Nigeria?s Code Top Level domain name .ng both for their websites and official emails.

Apart from the 86,089 email addresses which have been deployed, she says 250 websites of MDAs have been hosted on .gov.ng platform. She also says that the government currently hosts around 200 servers for more than 94 government agencies; adding that 450 government agencies have been connected to a common government network known as OneGov.net.

This seems as an implementation of the call made by the President, Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria, Mr. Lanre Ajayi, that governments at all levels should migrate its services online to boost broadband access in the country.

Also, the General Manager, Federal Public Sector, Galaxy Backbone, Mr. Frank Ugbodaga, while speaking on ?Broadband as a Catalyst for e-Government in Nigeria?, says there has been a rise in application of Internet and broadband resources by government, including the deployment of shared ICT infrastructure and services centres.

The Executive Vice-Chairman, Nigerian Communications Commission, Dr. Eugene Juwah, says Nigeria is not the only country aspiring to enjoy the broadband revolution.

He says, ?Doubling the broadband speed for the economy increases GDP by 0.3 percentage points. This, according to a report, is jointly conducted by Ericsson, Arthur D. Little and Chalmers University of Technology. The report quantified the isolated impact of broadband speed. The percentage points may appear small but if you apply it to the Nigerian GDP at N40tn, you obtain an incease of more than half a trillion naira in the first instance and N120bn in the second.?

The NCC boss laments that while the regulatory environment in the country has remained stable and attractive to global investment community, there still remain a number of challenges affecting broadband infrastructure roll out.

He says one of the most difficult challenges to widescale broadband infrastructure deployment is the issue of right-of- way.

On the solutions, he says instead of imposing one off charge for right-of-way, state governments may adopt a new regime of periodic revenue stream from their right-of-way assets.

One the way to realise this, according to him, is for the states to contribute to the asset on a participatory basis.

Alternatively, he advises that state governments may choose to barter their right-of-way assets for a specialised service from infrastructure operator. For instance, he says access to righ-of-way can be traded for a security surveillance network provided from the infrastructure.

Juwah identifies the prevalent multiple regulation and taxation by state government as a major hindrance to broadband infrastructure deployment, adding that available infrastructure are characterised by operational issues such as monopoly ownership, exorbitantly high pricing and discriminatory access.

He says, ?The current development has made very little impact with the estimated penetration of broadband in Nigeria varying from less than two per cent to less than five per cent. In fact, it is evident that there is practically no broadband market in Nigeria, the huge broadband capacities on our shores notwithstanding. The challenge of the distribution of this capacity inland is the obvious task the Reflash must confront. ?
