Powerful Angels blast Yankees for 8th straight win

(AP) ? Dan Haren stood at his locker and tried to run through all of the Los Angeles Angels' superlatives in his head, from those two tape-measure homers to several sparkling defensive plays ? and his own stellar pitching, of course.

Haren feels like the Angels are putting together a highlight reel during each night of their eight-game winning streak, and he's grateful to watch it from the mound.

Albert Pujols and Mark Trumbo homered, Haren pitched into the eighth inning, and the Angels extended their longest winning streak in nearly three years with a 5-1 victory over the New York Yankees on Tuesday night.

"We're being who we are, and this is who we expected to be coming out of spring training," said Haren, who won at home for the first time this season.

Rookie Mike Trout hit a run-scoring triple and made two jaw-dropping defensive plays for the Angels, who have won 11 of 15. After a rough start to a season of high expectations, Los Angeles (26-25) is above .500 for the first time since opening day.

"We're on a good roll now, and we've got to ride this as long as we can," Trumbo said.

Pujols hit a two-run shot for his 453rd career homer in the third inning, breaking a 34th-place tie with Carl Yastrzemski on baseball's career list. Trumbo followed up his game-ending shot Monday night by putting a solo shot deep into the fake rock pile behind center field at Angel Stadium in the sixth inning, a drive estimated at 443 feet.

Howie Kendrick also had a run-scoring single for the Angels, who hadn't won eight straight since July 2009. They haven't won nine in a row since 2005.

"When you're not swinging the bat, you're going to look dead," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "We probably looked dead for a month. (Showing) life is just a by-product of starting to swing the bats."

Haren (3-5) gave up eight hits with seven strikeouts and no walks, coming through with a strong start after the Los Angeles bullpen had to pitch nine innings in relief of injured ace Jered Weaver during Monday's 9-8 victory. After a four-game losing streak, the three-time All-Star has won two straight starts in overwhelming fashion, with 21 strikeouts and no walks in 16 innings.

Andy Pettitte (2-2) yielded nine hits and five runs over seven-plus innings in another solid start for the Yankees, but his teammates couldn't counteract the Angels' plate power and defensive prowess.

Trout and Peter Bourjos also made spectacular outfield catches on long drives by Nick Swisher, slamming into the wall to rob him of extra-base hits in the second and seventh innings. Bourjos tracked down yet another long drive by Swisher in the eighth, making the catch on the run to strand two New York runners.

"What are you going to do, man?" Swisher asked. "I swung the bat super well, and didn't have anything to show for it. They've got some track stars out there in center and left. Maybe I need to start hitting it to right. Keeping us to one run is pretty impressive."

Swisher had a run-scoring single when he wasn't getting robbed by the Angels' young outfielders, but the Yankees lost their second straight after a five-game win streak.

"It's pretty hard to say you're going to see an outfield that fast," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "Their defense was what kept us from scoring runs tonight. ... I thought our guys did a good job to give us a chance."

Ernesto Frieri struck out Robinson Cano with the bases loaded to end a hair-raising ninth inning. The Colombian right-hander recorded his 24th and 25th strikeouts in 12 hitless innings since the Angels acquired him on May 3, but Frieri also issued two walks with one out. After Trout made a diving catch in left, Frieri hit Alex Rodriguez to load the bases before fanning Cano.

Derek Jeter went 2 for 4 with a walk on the 17th anniversary of his major league debut with the Yankees, who passed the midway point of a nine-game road trip. The captain leads the AL with 70 hits, including 20 multihit games.

Pujols' two-run shot in the third inning was his fifth homer in eight games, his seventh in the past 14 days and his eighth of May. The three-time NL MVP has followed up his homerless April with a taste of the ferocious power Los Angeles expected to get from its $240 million investment, including 23 RBIs in his last 23 games.

Torii Hunter played right field and went 1 for 4 with a sixth-inning single in his first game since leaving the Angels on May 14 to deal with his teenage son's arrest in a sexual assault investigation. The veteran outfielder missed 15 games.

NOTES: After struggling with his control earlier in the season, Haren has walked one batter in 22 2-3 innings over his last three starts. ... Pujols' homer was his first off Pettitte in 25 career at-bats. ... Ivan Nova takes the mound for the Yankees in Wednesday night's series finale. The Angels go for the sweep behind Ervin Santana.

Pros of having investment qualities are obvious. Hypothetically talking, imagine having a six-plex inside a slow-changing, yet successful part of Atlanta where you billed each tenant $1,000. Your monthly lending for the building can be $3,000 however youll have that additional $3,000 cushioning monthly.

Another advantage of property investments is the generous duty kickback you might obtain. If you delight in acquiring your lump sum duty return towards the end of the year, then maybe investing and offering qualities whenever you want that quick bit of money is proper for you.

Also, there isnt a penalty for opting out early or age rules regarding whenever begin making use of your earnings. You dont need to be wealthy or super business savvy to incorporate property ownership into a pension planning goal. Its been named ?the equal chance wealth designer.?

A Perfect Mix: Kids and Gardening - Style Sheet - HGTV Canada

There are countless ways in which gardening is beneficial to children. It's fun, healthy, educational and empowering. They might not realize its worth, but really, that's not the point.

A young grower, deservedly proud of her wheatgrass. Photo by Jennifer Tibbitt.

Few approaches to education can be more effective than the hands-on variety; without doubt, gardening is all about being hands-on. What a special, fun opportunity for kids: they get a space of their own, they are encouraged to get dirty and mucky (bonus: play with water), and they get front-row seats ? rows of seeds, mind you ? at the wonder of growth.

As with any instructional process, it is important that the teachers approach the pupils with patience and care. Gardening is always a work in progress, and is best not ?shovelled? in on the day before a major deadline. Youngsters derive the most benefit (and, again, not just educational but fun) from being involved at every step possible.

Kids and Gardening: The basics

  • Start small (1 pot) for really little kids, gradually doling out more space as they grow older.
  • Pick a crop: little kids can handle bigger seeds, smaller seeds for bigger kids; let them grow whatever they desire.
  • Challenge tweens and teens to plant a variety of crops, harvest and then cook. It will encourage healthy eating.
  • Congratulate them on all their hard work in the garden ? they should be proud!

Kids and Gardening: The age groups

Young kids: Start any time
Whether it's by helping you make a mess digging in the dirt and dropping a seed into the ground, letting them water the soil, or giving them a pot to plant up ? kids can start gardening at any age. And the sooner, the better. Teach them the simple first steps: how to cover the seed with soil and gently water. Sunflowers, nasturtiums, peas or beans are all good starter seeds, as the reward (growth) is quick to come.

From kids to tweens: Let them make their own decisions
As young gardeners gain confidence, they can claim more space, whether it be a plot of their own or a few more balcony pots. Let them grow whatever catches their imagination, be it flowers, veggies or basket upon basket of strawberries. Errors will be made, tears might ensue (especially if basket upon basket of strawberries should fail to grow), and there can even be anger (at all ages!). Still, life lessons apply, such as learning from your mistakes and problem solving. And all that hard work results in beautiful plants they can, and will, be proud of.

Teens: A different kind of green?
Particular challenges can arise when kids hit their teen years (not just in gardening, of course). Perhaps somewhere, sometime they hear that digging in the ground isn't hip, or maybe their interest wanes. Nevertheless, be patient: They often return after a brief wander out in the world. Sometimes a little incentive helps ? as in, cash. I recall, during my eye-rolling teen years, the best garden in the neighbourhood was the one where we got paid 25 cents per weeded row (I guess that ages me!).

Look, a teenager who's not playing video games! Photo by Jennifer Tibbitt.

FOR KIDS OF ANY AGE: Don?t be bossy
Cast aside any bossy tendencies, as children quickly tire of the same old parental lecture (older kids especially). It?s up to you to work beside the kids and be -- here's that term again -- patient. Don?t forget that you are sowing the seeds of a future green-thumber, so let them make a mess! (Make a bit of a mess yourself, and remember how fun it was to be young!) And if you find them following you around the garden while you weed and water? Congratulate yourself for bringing another gardener into the fold.

Self-taught gardener Jennifer Tibbitt has developed a natural view of gardening based upon native and non-native plants, organic enrichment, heirloom varieties and using the existing terrain and growth to lead a garden in new directions. Originally a prairie wildflower, Jennifer has gardened coast-to-coast, from Vancouver to Halifax. After settling in Toronto, she established Dirt Mamas in 2000.

Lebanese Hostages In Syria Could Spark Tensions

BEIRUT -- The mysterious case of 11 Lebanese Shiites who were taken hostage in Syria last week is raising fears of renewed street battles in Beirut as Lebanon increasingly gets drawn into the swirling chaos next door.

The Syrian crisis already has spilled across the border into Lebanon over the past three weeks, sparking deadly violence in a country that remains deeply divided over the 15-month-old uprising against Syrian President Bashar Assad.

But the Shiites' abduction is potentially explosive, in part because it enflames Lebanon's fragile Sunni-Shiite fault line. It could also spark retaliatory attacks against the thousands of Syrians in Lebanon.

In recent days, members of Lebanon's powerful Shiite militant group, Hezbollah, have deployed at the entrances of Beirut's southern suburbs, a heavily Shiite area, to prevent any moves by angry protesters.

Hezbollah is a staunch ally of the Syrian regime, where a predominantly Sunni uprising is trying to oust the Assad family dynasty. The families of the kidnapped Shiites blame Syria's Sunni rebels for abducting the men.

"The kidnapping is clearly intended to drag Hezbollah into the Syrian quagmire," said Ziad Baalbaki, a 37-year-old Lebanese insurance broker in Beirut. "The whole thing is fishy, everyone is worried what will happen if they are not released or they turn out to be dead."

The Lebanese men were on their way back from a pilgrimage in Iran on May 22 when gunmen intercepted their buses in the northern Syrian province of Aleppo, according to the women on the pilgrimage who were allowed to go free and arrived in Lebanon hours later.

Since then, no one has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping. There were reports Friday that the hostages were about to be released, prompting a rush on the airport by family members. But the men never arrived, and it became clear the release plans went awry.

One opposition figure who said he spoke to the kidnappers told The Associated Press that the hostage takers decided not to release the men after Syrian forces began attacking rebel areas in Aleppo. Now, he said, the kidnappers are demanding Syrian authorities release 500 opposition detainees, including Lt. Col. Hussein Harmoush, one of the first officers to defect after the uprising began. Harmoush was later arrested by authorities during a special operation.

The opposition figure spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals.

Lebanese officials and Syrian activists have said the men are being held in an area near the Turkish border, but there is little credible information about their fate. Shiite leaders in Lebanon have scrambled to deny various rumors that might aggravate the situation ? including reports that one of the hostages is related to Hezbollah leader Sheik Hassan Nasrallah.

"The information indicates that they are alive and in good health. This is what the Syrian opposition and Turkish officials confirm," Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri told An-Nahar daily Monday.

Shortly after news of the abduction broke last Tuesday, dozens of angry protesters blocked major roads with burning tires and threatened to kidnap Syrians in Lebanon as a form of retaliation. The protesters went home only after Nasrallah went on TV, calling for calm and saying no Syrians in Lebanon should be harmed.

"They were kidnapped because they are Shiite, not for any other reason," said Mohammed Mir, a Lebanese Shiite. "Had they been returning from Haj in Saudi Arabia (a Sunni country) would anyone have dared to kidnap them?"

In the Bir el-Abed district south of Beirut on Monday, five female relatives of the kidnapped men sat silently inside the office of the religious tour agency Badr al-Kubra, which organized the pilgrimage.

The room was decorated with large posters of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Nasrallah, and the group's late military commander Imad Mughniyeh, who was assassinated in a car bomb in Damascus in 2008.

The women refused to be interviewed, saying they were worried it would hurt the negotiations taking place for the hostages' release.

The case has the potential to inflame sectarian tensions in Lebanon and trigger retaliatory attacks against tens of thousands of Syrians nationals now in Lebanon. The overwhelming majority of rebels fighting Assad's regime are Sunni Muslims, while Assad and the ruling elite in Syria belong to the tiny Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

Tensions from Syria have already spilled into Lebanon and clashes between Alawites and anti-Assad Lebanese Sunni groups in Lebanon's second largest city of Tripoli killed eight people earlier this month.

Aleppo-based activist Mohammed Saeed said the kidnappers have "impossible demands" from the regime in return for the release of the hostages, such as setting free all Aleppo province detainees and the withdrawal of the Syrian army from some areas.

"They are dealing with them (hostages) as if they are members of the regime," Saeed said.

Fast Company ? Creative Thinking Ideas from the 100 Most Creative ...

Following up the previous post on the June 2012 Fast Company list of The 100 Most Creative People in Business 2012, today?s list of creative thinking ideas from the Fast Company issue focus on disruptive and divergent thinking along with suggestions for enhancing your creative perspective. As with the other lists in this series, these creative ideas were inspired by the profiles in Fast Company. My intent was to pull a single creative thinking idea or creative lesson from each of the 100 profiles.

One interesting note about the Fast Company 100 Most Creative People in Business list is that the numbered rankings don?t seem to have any real meaning. At least I draw that conclusion from how certain groups of people who have similar characteristics (i.e., apps developers, two-person teams, fashion industry leaders, etc.) are given consecutive numbered rankings. That would be just TOO much of a creative coincidence.

Despite this indication the numbered rankings are so much hooey, each of the thirty-three creative thinking ideas below references the person whose profile inspired it, along with the person?s number on the 100 Most Creative People in Business list.

Here?s hoping these creative ideas get you thinking?and provide ideas for enhancing your own creative efforts.

(AP) ? It was after a second-round victory at the 2007 French Open that Maria Sharapova famously compared her movement on red clay to a "cow on ice."

And nowadays?

"I do occasionally still feel like it," Sharapova said Tuesday, "and I'm sure I look like it, too."

Not quite. Certainly not in the first round of this year's French Open, anyway.

Looking rather comfortable moving around on the slow surface and getting off to a quick start at the only Grand Slam tournament she's never won, Sharapova produced a perfect score at Roland Garros on Tuesday, beating 78th-ranked Alexandra Cadantu of Romania 6-0, 6-0 in 48 minutes.

Truth is, the second-seeded Sharapova never gave her opponent much of a chance, compiling an 18-0 edge in winners. Sharapova won 51 points and lost only 18.

She didn't need to expend much energy out there, but she figures that she's in good enough condition to handle what can be a grueling place to play the seven matches required to earn a Grand Slam title.

Sharapova won Wimbledon in 2004, the U.S. Open in 2006, and the Australian Open in 2008. The best she's done at the French Open, however, was the semifinals twice, in 2007 and last year.

Getting more and more efficient on clay, Sharapova is coming off a second consecutive Italian Open title on the surface last week.

In the past, Sharapova knows full well, a demanding three-set match at Roland Garros might leave her too sapped to be at her best in the following round.

"For the next match, it was just like the balloon popped or something, like ... you could tell my energy level wasn't there (and I) wasn't moving so good," she said. "And that has improved a lot, and helps me mentally, knowing that I don't feel like I'm saving myself so much."

The way Sharapova looks at it, she needed to focus on having better fitness and consistency from point to point, and from match to match ? and she has.

"Over the years, you learn what your body can take, what it can't, what you need, how you recover better, little by little," she explained. "I mean, look, I'm not ever going to be lifting 50-pound weights anytime soon ? or ever ? but it's little things, little muscles, little explosive steps that I feel like I've improved."

The 22-year-old Cadantu has never beaten someone ranked in the top 60, falling to 0-6 in such matches. She's also now 0-2 in Grand Slam matches.

And the Romanian's assessment after seeing Sharapova up close?

"She has a good game," Cadantu said. "She can make it here."
