High Power Wireless-N 600mW Gigabit Dual Band Router (R20000G)

The Amped Wireless High Power Wireless-N 600mW Gigabit Dual Band Router (R20000G) is a dual-band 802.11n router from a relatively young company in the networking space, Amped Wireless. The company's focus is more on range than with throughput speeds. Range is a worthy focus; however, testing did not show any great range or performance improvements over similarly-priced dual-bands from Netgear, Cisco Linksys, or Buffalo. Range increases quite a bit though, when the R20000G is paired with Amped Wireless' High Power Wireless-N Directional Dual Band USB Adapter (UA2000) and by updating the router with the latest firmware.

The R2000G offers a good setup process, some advanced capabilities and decent throughput. Still, the $179.99 price is hard to justify when you can get dual-band routers? such as the Netgear N900 and Cisco Linksys EA4500 that can support as much as 450 Mbps under ideal RF conditions on both bands for nearly the same price. The R20000G, on the other hand, supports up to 300 Mbps on both the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands.?Buffalo AirStation AC1300/N900 Gigabit Dual Band WZR-D1800H can now actually support up to 1300 Mbps on the 5 GHz band, thanks to the 802.11ac draft standard it incorporates.

Specs
The 20000G has two external 5dBi antennas which are detachable. The router has 600mW amplifiers to boost transmit power plus low noise amplifiers to increase receiving sensitivity.

As mentioned, both of the 20000G's bands can support up to 300 Mbps. The device is wall mountable and also ships with a stand so it can operate horizontally. The rear panel as four Gigabit LAN ports, a Gigabit WAN port, reset button, WPS button, and a USB 2.0 port for connecting storage devices. Printers are currently not supported but Amped states support will be made available in a future firmware update.

The router has a cooling vent on top of its casing as well as vents on the bottom. Still, it ran a bit warm after a day of uptime.

Setup
While the R20000G does not offer the wireless, practically automated setup of the latest Cisco Linksys EA-branded routers, the setup process is quick and easy and very well documented in the setup guide that ships with the device. Setup requires connecting an Ethernet cable from the computer used to setup the router, to one of the LAN ports on the router.

Once connected, it?s just a matter of opening up a Web browser to setup.ampedwireless.com (or to the router's IP address). This brings up the Smart Setup Wizard within the interface. The wizard can automatically detect the type of WAN connection. My connection was set up in about 10 seconds.

After the WAN is detected you have to re-log back into the interface, but logging back in is a smooth process. When I logged back in, the wizard picked up right where I had left off before I was forced to log out.

Setup then walks you through configuring the system time and wireless settings. By default, the SSID and security are already configured with WPA/WPA2 encryption. If you tweak the wireless settings, such change the SSID, for example, the router requires a reboot. The reboot was initially a lengthy 120 seconds, but a firmware update that came out as I was testing knocked that time down to 30 seconds.

The setup process is very good. The interface and setup documentation is among the most polished and detailed I've seen in the router market. The install guide doesn't just tell you how to setup the router and then leave you on your own; you?re given detailed instruction on how to connect Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android devices. There's even a section that answers questions about common problems that can crop out during a router install.

Paralyzed Rats Walk, Even Sprint After Rehab

Reporting in Science, researchers write that a combination of therapies, willpower and chocolate helped rats with severe spinal cord injuries learn to walk and even run again. Neurobiologist Moses Chao, not affiliated with the study, discusses the rehab method and whether it could work in humans.

IRA FLATOW, HOST:

This is SCIENCE FRIDAY. I'm Ira Flatow. Journalists should shy away from using the word breakthrough; it is a very rare event. But it's hard to ignore that word when you hear about this experimental rehab technique used in rats.

Rats paralyzed after severe spinal cord injury were able to walk, they could sprint upstairs and even avoid obstacles after a combination of therapies. In a study published in Science, Swiss researchers began by electrically and chemically stimulating the rats' spinal cords. Next, they strapped the rats into a robotic harness for support, and they left the rats to will themselves toward a treat. There's a treat, I'm going to get that treat.

And after six weeks of that training, the rats learned to walk and even run again, and what the team observed was that new neural connections had formed between the brain and the spinal cord, bypassing the injury. Wow.

Dr. Moses Chao is professor of cell biology, physiology and neuroscience at New York University School of Medicine. He's also president of the Society for Neuroscience and was part of the advisory board for the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation. He's not affiliated with the study, and he joins us from Washington to comment on its significance. Welcome to SCIENCE FRIDAY.

MOSES CHAO: Thank you, Ira, it's a pleasure to be here.

FLATOW: Is this as surprising to you as it sounds to us?

CHAO: Well, the success of the recovery from spinal cord injury is quite a surprise, but the findings are really built on many basic research work in the last decade.

FLATOW: Describe it to us, what kind of injury that the rats had and what actually happened in the treatment.

CHAO: So this was an injury that was in the spinal cord, the lower spinal cord, and it was actually two different lesions. They were pretty close together. It's not a complete lesion of the spinal cord, so these are really incomplete injuries, but it was enough to cause paralysis in these animals.

FLATOW: And so they electrochemically stimulated the rat's spinal cord.

CHAO: That's right. The treatment was quite interesting because the investigators combined three different methods. One is the electrical stimulation. And the second was treadmill training. They had taken these rats and put harnesses on them and induced them to go through a treadmill. And the third treatment was use of a number of chemicals, neurotransmitters, to really elicit locomotion of the spinal cord.

FLATOW: And the rats were stimulated to go after a piece of chocolate?

CHAO: Yes, either chocolate or cheese. This was to try to induce voluntary movement on the animal's part.

FLATOW: And that seemed to be a critical part of the success here.

CHAO: Yes, that's part of it, surely. Besides the three methods, I think the rats were induced to take part in more voluntary movements.

FLATOW: And the rats that had no goal, had no enticement, they did not do as well.

CHAO: That's correct.

FLATOW: Wow, and so just by willing themselves to go after this, they could help regenerate some of those nerve cells?

CHAO: That's right. So we don't know how much regeneration there was, but certainly signals from the brain to the spinal cord were involved in this - in these new connections, and some of the signals from the brain have to involve voluntary decision-making on the part of the animal. So that's quite an impressive result, that is the brain, the brain's plasticity or ability to change or change its movements was certainly part of the treatment here.

FLATOW: So there was a connection between the willing part of the brain and the growing part of it.

CHAO: There probably is, yeah. We - that was not really investigated, but it was shown in experiments by this group that was reported in Science that stimulation of neurons in the brain could have effects on muscle in these animals. So there was a definite connection between signals in the brain and the spinal cord and also muscle.

FLATOW: Of course the next question I'm going to ask you is the $64 question, and that is: What about humans?

CHAO: Yeah, so that's going to be very interesting. There's already a lot of training on treadmills of patients in rehab that's been carried out for many years at UCLA and also at Louisville. In general, the training is in patients where the injury is not very severe, it's a mild injury to the spinal cord.

But in these human trials, it's very clear that treadmill training can improve locomotion in these patients. So that's been going on for a number of years. For this study, though, the injury was more severe, it was not a complete injury, as I mentioned, but the hope is that by stimulating some of the connections that were perhaps lost, together with the treadmill training and the neurotransmitters, you could get recovery in terms of locomotion.

FLATOW: In other words don't give up so quickly on the more severely injured people.

CHAO: Exactly.

FLATOW: And do you have to create a support system for people, like you have literally a support system to hold the rats up?

CHAO: Yes, in fact, the treadmill training that's usually carried out is with a harness or, in the case of Christopher Reeve, who went through some of this training, he went in a swimming pool and tried to move his legs. So people are immobilized during this kind of training. But in recent work, it's been found that the patients do improve.

FLATOW: So where to go next with this kind of work?

CHAO: Well, I think the fact that these neurotransmitters and the electrical stimulation give these positive effects means there must be a lot of actions through the electrical stimulation and the neurotransmitters to facilitate locomotion and to activate the motor system.

And we need to know a little bit more about the mechanism by which electrical stimulation and these neurotransmitters can sort of awaken these networks of neurons in the spinal cord. But there's a lot of work going on right now, and I'm very hopeful that we'll be able to understand these mechanisms.

FLATOW: Dr. Chao, thank you for taking time to be with us today.

CHAO: Well, thank you.

FLATOW: Dr. Moses Chao professor of cell biology, physiology and neuroscience at New York University School of Medicine and president of the Society for Neuroscience.

Recession stormclouds menace world economy

Damian Dovarganes / AP

In this Thursday, May 31, 2012, job seekers gather for employment opportunities at the 11th annual Skid Row Career Fair at the Los Angeles Mission in Los Angeles.

By John W. Schoen, Senior Producer

The gears of the global economy are all slowing in unison.

The latest evidence came with Friday?s startling employment report from the Labor Department: Job growth slowed in May to just 69,000 and was much weaker in April than initially reported. The news followed?a string of reports from Europe to China?showing that growth in world's major economies is fading away.

"Wow, this is ugly,? said Malcolm Polley, president of Stewart Capital Advisors, in response to Friday?s jobs data. ?Some had believed that we had decoupled from China slowing and all the problems in Europe, but that seems to be shortsighted. We're slowing alongside the rest of the world."

There was little good news to be found in Friday?s numbers. After adding more than 200,000 jobs a month in the first quarter, the pace of hiring slowed sharply, to an average of just 73,000 per month in April and May. Analysts say the economy needs to create roughly 125,000 jobs a month just to keep the unemployment rate steady.

The hiring slowdown last month sent the unemployment rate up to 8.2 percent from 8.1 percent, reversing a steady decline that began last summer. Overall, total employment remains about five million jobs lower than the level seen in December 2007, at the start of the latest recession.

The weak hiring complicates President Barack Obama's fight to win re-election, offering his Republican rival Mitt Romney a powerful issue.

"Today's weak jobs report is devastating news for American workers and American families," Romney said in a statement.

The White House called on?Congress to do more to help the economy create jobs.

"Congress has to take some action because while we see the unemployment rate where it is, it's not acceptable,"?Labor Secretary Hilda Solis said on?CNBC.

Hiring was weak across the board in May.?The private sector added just 82,000 new jobs. Governments continued to cut payrolls, slashing another 13,000 positions, as cities and states struggle to balance their budgets.

After unseasonably warm weather boosted hiring earlier this year, construction employment shrank by 28,000 in May, the fourth straight decline. Manufacturing, which has been enjoying a revival in the U.S. this year, added only 12,000 jobs.

Those with jobs saw their hours trimmed and their paychecks lose ground to inflation. Gains in average weekly earnings fell from a recent high of 3.1 percent to just 1.7 percent. Consumer prices were 2.3 percent higher in April than a year earlier.?

?Slicing the lifeblood of spending nearly in half accomplishes only one thing: It slows spending,? said Tom Porcelli, chief U.S. economist at RBC Capital Markets.

Consumers are getting a break at the gas pump as prices slide from a peak of almost?$4 a gallon reached in April. But their paychecks still aren?t covering the bills: A?separate report Friday showed that as personal spending continues to outpace incomes, consumers are borrowing or tapping savings to make up the difference. The savings rate continued to decline in May, falling a tenth of a point to 3.4 percent, to the lowest level in more than four years.

As consumer confidence fades and demand slows, businesses are also pulling back. Investment in machinery and computers has fallen in the last two months, and some regional surveys are showing slower growth in factory activity.

There?s reason for caution. As Europe's financial crisis widens, businesses face bigger uncertainty closer to home with the looming impact of higher taxes and deeper government spending cuts. As the November election approaches, Congress is all but ignoring the year-end deadline to avert the so-called ?fiscal cliff? that economists estimate could shave as much as half a percent from U.S. gross domestic product, which expanded at a tepid 1.9 percent in the first quarter.

As the U.S. has slowed, Europe?s economy has come to a dead stop, with weak growth in Germany offsetting deepening recessions in Greece, Spain and Italy.

On Friday, fresh data showed that eurozone unemployment has hit a record high. Job losses there are expected to continue to climb as the ongoing financial crisis forces businesses to pull back and compels debt-burdened governments to lay off workers.

Some 17.4 million people were out of work in the 17-nation bloc in April, or 11 percent of the working population, the highest level since records began in 1995, the EU's statistics office Eurostat said on Friday.

"This 11 percent level is going to continue edging up in the coming months and probably until the end of the year," said Francois Cabau, an economist at Barclays Capital who sees the eurozone's economy contracting 0.1 percent this year.

Despite efforts by Europe?s central bank to lower interest rates and revive growth, borrowing costs have risen and banks have tightened credit as they hoard cash to weather the crisis. Consumer and business confidence has been sapped by ongoing uncertainty about the financial fallout from Greece, which threatens to destabilize Europe?s banking system and plunge the eurozone deeper into recession.

Slowing demand from consumers and businesses in the developed world are creating headwinds for China?s economy, the last source of growth to support the global economy. Despite wage gains, Chinese consumers still make up a relatively small portion of the Chinese economy, so domestic spending is not strong enough to offset falling demand for exports.

?It is increasingly obvious that we are in the midst of a global economic slowdown,? said Porcelli.

The ominous economic data from around the world raises the prospect that central banks will act to try to revive growth. But it remains to be seen how effective those polices would be. The U.S. Federal Reserve has already undertaken two rounds of pump-priming with massive purchases of bonds to force rates to record low levels.

?(Fed Chairman Ben) Bernanke?s hat is pretty well out of rabbits,? said David Rosenberg, chief economist at Gluskin Sheff.

"This is not just a soft patch, but we may actually roll over into a mild double dip recession," says Barton Biggs, Traxis Partners, responding to this morning's dismal jobs report and its impact on the economy.

Product Bookshelf ? An MBA perspective on business models

Business Models: A Strategic Management Approach brings many familiar management models to bear on the elements of a business model. Author Allan Afuah examines effective business model design by exploring internal and external components as well as industry factors. He looks at market positioning , competitive landscape, resources and capabilities, pricing, revenue options, financing, and planning activities related to effective business model design.

Many of the elements Afuah covers (costs, resources, partners, revenue model, customer segments) map well to Alex Osterwalder?s Business Model Canvas. However, this textbook doesn?t cover distribution channels, which are a key element of the Business Model Canvas. Afuah approaches business models from corporate strategy, functional, operational and financial perspectives, but does not spend much time on marketing and sales. Unlike Osterwalder?s Business Model Generation,?Business Models won?t walk you through creating and testing a business model?it?s more like an owner?s manual than a cook book.

Positioning

For Afuah, ?a business model is a framework for making a profit? and each element of the business model is evaluated in terms of its ability to contribute to that goal. To make a profit, a firm must either offer its products at a lower cost than its competitors or occupy a premium position in the market through differentiation so Afuah begins by examining positioning.

A firm can position itself as either a low-cost provider or as a differentiated by features, reputation, physical location, timing, and other factors. Low-cost positioning is typically the result of optimization around cost structure, supply chain, and operations. Differentiation is in relation to competitors and benefits customers perceive as important.

The book illustrates positioning relative to competitors along dimensions that are relevant to customers using multi-dimensional scaling. The customer?s perceptions of benefits form the X and Y axis of a graph; products and companies can then be graphed for relative position.

Pricing and Revenue Models

Pricing is an important consideration because positioning alone does not provide the means necessary for a profitable business model. Afuah covers common pricing strategies such as skimming and penetration along with rationale for price cuts and increases. Although value pricing pricing at the customer?s reservation price is ideal, its usually possible, so many companies default to cost-plus pricing.

Once a pricing strategy has been established, sources of revenue can be identified:

  • direct product or service sales (product sales, subscriptions, fee-for-service, markup, commission)
  • post-sale services
  • indirect content sales (e.g., advertising is sold to create media like TV, radio, and magazines)
  • product financing (e.g., automobile financing, GE Capital)
  • collect-early, pay-later financing (e.g., Dell Direct where the customer pays first and then the PC is manufactured)
  • intellectual property royalties (e.g., licenses)

Afuah uses the familiar Growth-Share Matrix and the GE/McKinsey matrix as tools to evaluate revenue models. These are essentially portfolio management tools which can help with investment decisions.

Segmentation

Afuah covers customer segmentation to ensure a match between revenue model and market. Consumers can be segmented by demographics, psychographics, behavior, geography or a combination of factors. Selecting the right target involves asking questions about market size, affordability, competition (Five Forces), and internal readiness.

?

Internal and External Factors

From an operational perspective, examining the value chain within which a company exists is important. The concept of a value chain spans the Partners and Activities boxes on the Business Model Canvas. Reviewing the value chain can give insight into cost reduction opportunities as well as new value creation possibilities.

When discussing resources and capabilities, which are equivalent to the Key Resources box on the Business Model Canvas, Afuah uses the VRISA (value, rareness, imitability, substitutability, and appropriability) framework as an evaluation tool. A higher rating on these attributes increases the chances of a profitable business model.

To successfully execute on a business model, organizational structure, systems, processes, and people need to be aligned. Changing a business model means changing your operating model.

?

Business Model Evolution

Afuah presents an interesting framework for business model evolution: block, run, and team-up. Blocking consists of defending a firm?s business model from competitors; running requires continually innovating a business model to stay ahead of the pack; teaming-up involves finding complementary partners to strengthen a business model. In all cases, companies must innovate. Innovation and change can be incremental, radical, disruptive, systemic, or dynamic. Disruptive innovation is best described in Clayton Christensen?s The Innovator?s Dilemma. Systemic change is a value chain perspective that seeks to take into account all consequences and impacted elements of innovation. Dynamic change describes the idealized scenario of ?curve-jumping? where, once a technology or product matures, a new one is waiting to take its place.

Costs

Like the Business Model Canvas, Afuah calls out costs as a separate category to evaluate. He advises using a value chain, value network, or value shop approach to assess cost structure. A value chain portrays the flow of resources that the firm participates in and allows the firm to understand its role in the final customer deliverable. A value network depicts the broader ecosystem of players involved in the industry. A value shop can help identify the range of services and value that an organization provides.

Afuah identifies a set of five cost drivers ordered by stage of the business system: research & development, product design, manufacturing and operations, marketing and sales, and distribution. Each cost driver is affected by the industry the company is in along with internal considerations.

?

The Seven C?s

Because ?too often, firms spend time performing strategic planning without really understanding the reasons behind success or failure?, Afuah includes a ?Seven C?s? framework. These seven components form the backbone of the book and are elaborated in each chapter.

  • Competitive Position ? is the firm lowest cost or differentiated?; what market segments are served?; what are sources of revenues?; what is the pricing model?
  • Connected Activities ? what is the value chain?; how does it contribute to profitability?
  • Competitive Forces ? how do Porter?s Five Forces play into profitability?; what other macro environmental factors are relevant?
  • Critical Industry Value Drivers ? what drives cost?; what influences differentiation?
  • Capabilities ? VRISA analysis
  • Change and Sustainability ? how does the firm innovate its offerings and business model?
  • Cost of Activities ? what are primary costs and how can they be reduced?

?

The book also covers various financing and valuation models for determining the funding required for operating a business. To finance a business, a business must choose the right type of investor and present a convincing case for funding. Afuah includes some considerations for selecting the timing and type of investment to seek.

In terms of planning, Afuah advises using a standard strategic planning process and using the Seven C?s model as the basis of the business plan.

?

The book concludes with a set of ten in-depth case studies which dissect the business model challenges of companies including Borders, eBay, and LEGO. Although not targeted at startups or business model reinvention specifically, the book uses many familiar management theories as building blocks of a comprehensive business model. As an academic treatment of business models, it works well and provides many diagnostic and discovery tools. It?s a thorough workbook for evaluating all aspects of a profitable business model.
