BluntDinerz Las Vegas Food and Drink Blog

Vapid Staff but the Food was Pretty Good.

The hostess lazily sauntered towards me, refusing to smile, and she looked at me like I was there to sell encyclopedias. When I began to speak she plainly interjected, "One?"
"Yes, Please," I replied to the back of her head.
She walked me to the counter, and asked me if I would like
to sit at the counter.
I agreed, the counter is cool.
The next person to speak with me got my attention by throwing a straw down in front of me. I looked up, and a male model was staring past me, to my right.
"Can I get you something to drink?" He said, still staring at the camera he wished was filming his very well-groomed face.

"Coffee and water, please."
I got a nod as confirmation and this kid never looked at me once. His gaze transfixed past me even as he walked away.
"There must be a bunch of girls in the casino area behind me..."

Just a casino and some people drinking at a bar across the way, are all I saw. I had to look past a manager who was standing around thinking of something to do to justify his existence.
Maybe he was throwing hand signals that were distracting Camera One.
Before my beverages arrived, but not shortly after I ordered them, another too-cool-for-school server approached me walking just slowly enough to let me know that this is all his decision.

He wasn't quite as detached as Camera One, but he stared past me pretending to look at something as well. His gaze was more intense. Whatever this kid was pretending to look at, he was concerned about it. I could tell. The group of people at the bar didn't seem that interesting to me, but there was something this kid was believing in.

My order was "Corn Flake French Toast," and a Berry Yogurt Parfait with Granola and Fresh Fruit. I was able to keep his attention long enough to give him my complete order before he dashed off. He kept his focus on Snuffleupagus as he snatched my menu and bolted.

While I waited for my food I got to see what happens when vapid meets idiot. A hipster kid walked in and sat down two seats to my left. This guy had the hostesses full attention. She came from out of nowhere, with Someone has dared to pass the podium without guidance from her menu wiping majesty.

"Can I help you sir." She said, shoving a menu in his face.

Having playtime on the swiveled chair, and sloshing his drink all over the counter top, the gravelly-voiced hipster replied, "I don't need a menu."

"He'll be right with you, sir." She said in a tone that made her intentions of not lifting a finger to help him quite clear.

"Can't I just order some eggs or something, man." The hipster asked, sounding a lot like Pauly Shore.

Miss Personality repeated, "He'll be right with you sir." She pranced away quite satisfied that she got the last word.

Camera-One eventually showed up to get a drink order. He had not been given the news that there was a socially-retarded lightweight at the counter in a hurry to order. The hostess must have been too busy gloating to bother communicating with her co-workers.?

Camera-One reminded The Hipster with Zoolander detachment, "He'll be right with you, sir."

The Hipster whined, "I told her I didn't want a menu...." "Fuck this, man."

He walked out grinning proudly.

The staff was unmoved.

The Food didn't take long to arrive, and my coffee came to me hot and fresh. The food wasn't bad at all. Corn flake french toast has a caramel flavor, and the crispy texture was fun. The parfait was very good. Very fresh, and I'm pretty sure it was Greek yogurt. From that point on, my waiter was attentive and much more focused on his job. I appreciated his effort to make me feel comfortable after watching Pauly Shore do his act, but it wasn't enough to change my mind that the service sucks at Twenty four Seven Cafe in The Palms.

Frankly, I can't blame the kids too much. My attention span was about that short when I was their age, and The Palms has never given me the impression of being as slick as they claim. In fact, I find the place to be more on the sleazy side. They've always seemed like the pretenders to me, just pulling the wool over the eyes of a very gullible demographic. Offering all the best amenities, but never fully delivering. Would any of you who know The Palms agree?

The place even looks like a Hollywood movie set. I'd recommend The Palms for girl watching and that's about it. About $22 plus tip was the damage. I'm finding that Asian restaurants seem to be the only place to go for decent late night cheap eats if you don't want a typical egg breakfast or Mexican food. Am I right, or not looking hard enough? Any local readers want throw me a recommendation??

(AP) ? "If Dad calls, tell him I got too close to being dead but I'm O.K. I was real lucky. I'll write again soon."

That poignant message never reached the mother of Army Sgt. Steve Flaherty. He was killed in Vietnam in 1969 before he could mail the letters he was carrying, including one he might have been writing when he died. The letters were taken by the Vietnamese after his death, U.S. officials said in releasing excerpts on Monday.

The letters, chronicling the carnage and exhaustion of war, were given to Defense Secretary Leon Panetta in exchange for a Vietnamese soldier's diary that was taken from his body by an American GI. The letters will be returned to Flaherty's family in South Carolina.

Vietnamese Defense Minister Phung Quang Thanh and Panetta made the exchange in a ceremony in which the Vietnamese also agreed to open three new sites in the country for excavation by the United States to search for troop remains from the war. Acidic soil in Vietnam erodes bones quickly, leaving in many cases only teeth for military teams to use to try and identify service members.

Ron Ward, U.S. casualty resolution specialist at the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command in Hanoi, said there are at least four U.S. troops believed to be lost in the three areas that are being opened. That leaves eight sites still restricted by the Vietnamese, he said.

Memories of the Vietnam War are fading for many Americans, and the war is the stuff of textbooks for others. But it is brought vividly alive in Sgt. Flaherty's letters. The mail from the Columbia, S.C., native to his mother, Lois, and two women identified only as Mrs. Wyatt and Betty, offer emotional accounts of his fear ? and also his determination.

"I felt bullets going past me," Flaherty writes to Betty. "I have never been so scared in my life."

"We took in lots of casualties and death," he writes. "We dragged more bodies of dead and wounded than I can ever want to forget."

"Thank you for your sweet card. It made my miserable day a much better one but I don't think I will ever forget the bloody fight we are having. ... RPG rockets and machine guns really tore my rucksack."

By 1969, the war was sharply dividing Americans back home, but Flaherty tells Mrs. Wyatt he still believes in the mission.

"This is a dirty and cruel war but I'm sure people will understand the purpose of this war even though many of us might not agree," he writes.

In another section of the letter to his mother, Flaherty reassures her that he will get some rest.

"I definitely will take R&R," he wrote. "I don't care where so long as I get a rest, which I need so badly, soon. I'll let you know exact date."

Flaherty, who was 22 when he was killed in March 1969, was returned home for burial. Assigned to the 101st Airborne, he died in the northern section of South Vietnam.

It's clear he saw some heavy combat.

"Our platoon started off with 35 men but winded up with 19 men when it was over," he tells his mother. "We lost platoon leader and whole squad."

Officials said parts of Flaherty's letters were read in propaganda broadcasts by the Vietnamese during the war.

This is the first time such a joint exchange of war artifacts has occurred, they said.

Vietnamese Col. Nguyen Phu Dat had kept Sgt. Flaherty's letters, and last August he mentioned them in an online publication.

Early this year, Robert Destatte, a retired Defense Department employee who had worked for the POW/MIA office, noticed the publication, and the Pentagon began to work to get the letters back to Flaherty's family. Flaherty's sister-in-law, Martha Gibbons, 73, of Irmo, S.C., said she learned of the letters' existence about six weeks ago.

Gibbons said her husband met Flaherty when the boy was a 6-year-old living in a Japanese orphanage and her husband persuaded his mother, with whom they lived, to adopt the child. He grew up to be a well-liked, athletic boy, who dropped out of college to join the Army despite a baseball scholarship.

"He decided to enlist in the Army and go fight for his country in Vietnam and he didn't make it back, " said Kenneth L. Cannon, 80, of Prosperity, S.C., Flaherty's uncle. "It was very hard to take. It was hard."

Cannon said the family was told that he was in a field, taking a break to eat lunch or write letters.

"He never let us know how afraid and scared he was," Gibbons said. "He was in danger. We knew it was bad. We just didn't know how bad, I guess."

She's thrilled the information has been released.

"I had a very emotional morning all over again. But it was a wonderful emotion this time. It's good for both countries. It's good for all the soldiers who were killed for both countries." Gibbons said the family would store the letters with Flaherty's medals, scrapbook and flag.

Defense officials reviewing the packet of papers given to Panetta said it appears there are three sets of letters, including the four written by Flaherty. It was not clear how many other service members' letters were there, but officials were going through them Monday

The small diary belonged to Vu Dinh Doan, a Vietnamese soldier who was killed in a machine gun fight, according to defense officials. They said a Marine, Robert "Ira" Frazure of Walla Walla, Wash., saw the diary ? with a photo and some money inside ? on the chest of the dead soldier and took it back to the U.S.

The diary came to light earlier this year when the sister of a friend of Frazure's was doing research for a book and Frazure asked her help in returning the diary. The sister, Marge Scooter, brought the diary to the PBS television program "History Detectives."

The show then asked the Defense and State departments to help return the diary.

There are nearly 1,300 cases of troops still unaccounted for, and officers briefing Panetta said about 600 of those remains could be recoverable.

Ward said that opening the three new sites will enable the U.S. to try to find:

? Two Air Force members who were lost when their plane was shot down in Quang Binh Province in central Vietnam in 1967.

? An Army private first class who went missing when he was out with his unit on a search-and-destroy mission in 1968 in the tri-border area of Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam.

? A Marine whose plane went down in Quang Tri Province. Another Marine on the plane ejected and was rescued.

Summer Wines - What You Need to Know | Flavors and More ...

By Marsha Fottler -

Michael Green

Michael Green is one of America?s premier wine and spirits celebrities, serving as the Gourmet Magazine wine and spirits expert for 19 years along with making appearances on?the Today Show, Food Network, MSNBC, and CNN.?His wine stories as they relate to food, travel, business and lifestyle have appeared the New York Times, Fortune Small Business, and Entrepreneur Magazine, and his advice is sought by the corporate world as well as everyday wine drinkers who value his sensible (and sensuous) approach to buying, collecting and drinking wines for every day and celebratory occasions. He is an icon in the wine and spirits industry.

Michael serves as the Wine and Spirits Director and lead presenter for the Food Network Atlantic City Food & Wine Festival and is the headlining wine and spirits personality on the national Buick Discovery Tour.?He travels the world thrilling audiences with his spirited wine and mixology performances, sharing his love of wine, spirits and authentic experiences.

Michael is also?an accomplished playwright and is currently working on a new spirits-themed off-Broadway play. Michael?s first play, ?Wine Lovers: The Musical? is currently touring the U.S. His new play, set during Prohibition, is slated to begin production.

Michael will be contributing wine articles regularly to Flavors & More. We recently asked him for some advice about choosing wines for summer meals or parties. Here?s what Michael said:

?

Q. When you think of summer wines, what characteristics do you want?

A. I seek out wines that are light, clean, crisp and dry. Modest alcohol content in a wine is also a good idea in the summer especially outdoors. If I am inside and the air conditioning is cranked, that?s another story!

?

Q. Should all summer wines be served chilled?

A. Many folks serve their wines at a temperature that is not going to show the wines to their best advantage. In general, the lighter the wine, the cooler it can be. Too cold and it will accentuate the wines acidity and mask the aroma nuances. Think Coca-Cola at room temperature and Coca-Cola cold. There is a difference! For lighter whites and Champagnes, I look for 40 to 45 degrees. For more complex whites I will serve them cool not cold, as high as 55 degrees. As for reds, I prefer to serve these wines at cellar temperature, around 58 to 60 degrees. If the red wine is lighter, say a Beaujolais or a oven Tempranillo from La Mancha, I will chill it even more. When in doubt, follow the ?Michael Green 15-Minute Rule?. Take your white wines out of the fridge 15 minutes before serving; but put your red wines into the fridge 15 minutes before serving. Try it and if you have any doubts about the positive effect, taste the same wines at two different temperatures. You?ll notice the difference.

?

Q. What?s your opinion of Sangria? What?s the right wine to use?

A. I love Sangria if it is well made. As for the wine, an all-purpose red with no oak treatment is fine. Use fresh fruit and fresh juices. If you want to elevate or customize your Sangria, add some brandy. If you prefer white Sangria, look for un-oaked whites such as Airen from Spain or Pinot Grigio.

?

Q. What are your two or three favorite moderately priced or budget priced wines for picnic foods such sandwiches, salads, chips?

A. German Riesling, La Mancha Joven Tempranillo, and Rose (and I am not talking only about dry rose). A white Zindandel can be wonderful. With the salt and fat from chips and sandwiches, a touch of sweetness can be just the flavor you want for contrast and balance.

?

Q. What about steaks or burgers on the grill for an al fresco summer dinner? ?A. Zinfandel, Beaujolais, Chinon, Joven (young Tempranillo). All should be served chilled.

?

Q. How about chicken and fish on the grill, a couple of favorites for those dining options?

A. You want to think light, crisp and dry so choose a German Riesling, Rose, Chinon, or Joven Tempranillo.

?

Q. You?re on vacation relaxing on the deck watching the sun slide into the water. What?s in your wine glass?

A. You assume I take a vacation? Oh, yeah, my work is usually a vacation. When I?m relaxing on the deck I want Airen, Sauvignon Blanc or German Riesling. I tend to be a white wine sort of guy in the summer because I live in New York City where it is brutally hot in the summer. I?m looking for something refreshing and light.

?

Q.You?ve been invited to a friend?s house for a summer tapas party of small plates and sharing platters. What wine are you bringing?

A. Unless I am asked to bring something in a specific category, I?m apt to bring a bottle of dessert wine. One bottle can serve as many as 10 and it is a festive way to end the evening. If I am asked to bring the wines for the meal ? say tapas ? I would head to Spain, figuratively. Lately, I?m a fan of the of the wines of La Mancha, home of Manchego cheese, saffron, garlic and yummy wines. I believe in serving regional wines with regional food.

?

Q. Do you have a favorite summer drink made with wine?

A. A well-made Sangria.

?

Q. What are three pricey wines you want to add to your summer inventory of wines to sip in June, July and August.

A. A great White Burgundy, a Barolo and a well made Pinot Noir. Serve with air conditioning.
