Because I'm such a nice person, I decided to put up all the missions here. Only the main ones though!

We are sorry we have not had time to train you, but we have a mission for you. Every single person in Detruit has disappeared. We wish for you to go in and investigate.

Miss Lowe and Miss Fairson will parachute to the top of this building and check it out. It is the town's security center. It is very hard to access from the ground, but relatively easy to access from the roof.

Mr Baxter, Mr Zephir, and Mr Stein will check the mayor's house. It is usually well guarded, but we can assure you that it will not be on that day.

You will each have a communications headset consisting of an earpiece and a microphone. This will allow us to track you. You will also have a weapon of choice.

If you perform well on this mission and co-operate, you will get heavily rewarded.

If you do not co-operate, everyone will be punished.

You leave in an hour. You will wear the clothes we give you, and will use only your powers and the weapons we supply you with. Understood?"

Mason Appears in Recent Rankings

Posted: June 14, 2012 at 4:43 pm, Last Updated: June 14, 2012 at 4:54 pm

By Robin Herron

Just when you thought universities had been ranked in every possible way to cover every aspect of their operations, a new ?list? comes along.

The latest ranking by the London-based Times Higher Education magazine, called the ?100 Under 50? list, which was published May 31, comprises universities around the world that have been operating for no more than 50 years.

Mason, founded in 1972, fits into that category, and it falls at 57 on this new list. Eight other U.S. universities join Mason on the 100 Under 50 list; Mason is the only Virginia school.

The new list is based on the Times Higher Education World University Rankings (Mason sits in the 301-350 range on the current World University Rankings), but it gives a different weight to some of the criteria, especially the ?subjective indicators of academic prestige.? Therefore, in the 100 Under 50 list, the reputation weighting was reduced from one-third to about one-fifth.

The Times Higher Education explains its rationale this way:

?It was argued that older institutions can expect in general to enjoy greater global prestige based on their longer heritage of excellence. Older universities have deeper, wider and more established alumni networks, with graduates more likely to hold senior positions in universities and society at large, all of which can have a greater impact on reputation.?

Other criteria used in the ranking but tweaked for the 100 Under 50 list include research volume, income and reputation; number of research citations; teaching and learning environment; international outlook; and industry income from knowledge transfer.

Another recent ranking by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine of the top 100 U.S. institutions awarding the greatest number of undergraduate degrees in 2010-11 to minority students ranks Mason at 29th for awarding degrees to Asian-Americans; 75th for Hispanic students; and 54th for all minority groups.

?Like many schools, Mason fares diversely in rankings, including the recent ones, though our trend tends to be upward in most cases,? says Mason Provost Peter Stearns. ?The impact of youth on reputation, and funding levels, form our main constraints. Obviously, we need to learn from rankings without taking them too seriously.?

Mason has ranked highly on other prominent lists in recent years, including the following:

  • Mason was ranked in the top five ?Up-and-Coming Institutions? in an annual survey conducted by U.S. News & World Report.
  • Mason was ranked in the top 200 of the Academic Ranking of World Universities, which is produced annually by China?s Shanghai Jiao Tong University?s Institute of Higher Education.
  • Kiplinger?s Personal Finance magazine named Mason to its national list of the top 100 ?Best Values in Public Colleges.?
  • For the third year in a row, the Chronicle of Higher Education, the premier publication for academic news and issues, named Mason one of the ?Great Colleges to Work For.?
  • Mason was ranked number 57 among U.S. and Canadian universities on the ?Webometrics Ranking of World Universities,? which analyzes the web content and presence of a university.
  • Mason ranked 68 among the top 100 of ?America?s Best College Buys? in a report compiled by Forbes magazine and the Center for College Affordability and Productivity. And on Forbes? overall ?Top Colleges? list of more than 600 undergraduate institutions, Mason ranks 273.
  • Mason was recognized as one of the few universities in the nation with little or no disparity in graduation rates between African American and Hispanic students compared with white students, according to two recent reports by the Education Trust.

Romney: Obama denying middle class a 'fair shot'

(AP) ? Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney launched a multistate bus tour through small-town America on Friday, charging that President Barack Obama hasn't given the middle class "a fair shot."

The tour, unusual for Romney, marked an attempt to upend Obama's core argument against his challenger: that the Republican is disconnected from the ordinary folks he aims to lead.

The five-day, six-day excursion by bus ? as well as airplane ? comes after Romney spent the past few weeks courting wealthy donors and raising millions of dollars to fund his presidential ambitions.

"If there's ever been a president who has not given a fair shot to the middle-income Americans of this great nation, it is Barack Obama," Romney declared from a makeshift podium during an "ice cream social" in Milford's town square. "I understand what it takes to get people to work again. I will do that to help the American people from the richest to the poorest and everybody in between."

Obama used the power of the presidency to overshadow Romney's big day.

The president announced that the government will stop deporting hundreds of thousands of young illegal immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children. Romney waited until late afternoon to address the issue although the news had been out since morning. When he did, he distanced himself from the sharp rhetoric he used during the primaries.

Romney once vowed to veto the so-called DREAM Act, stalled legislation once backed by Republicans and Democrats that would help some of those young immigrants become citizens. But on Friday, he emphasized the need to help those who were brought to the country involuntarily. He would not say whether he would reverse Obama's decision if elected.

Romney's response infuriated some New Hampshire conservatives and underscored his delicate standing in the party following a divisive GOP primary, even as he seeks to broaden his appeal.

"Romney's got to stop pussyfooting around this," Rachel Swinford, a 59-year-old New Boston, N.H., jewelry maker, who backed Rick Santorum during the primaries. "We're stuck with Romney. But compared to Obama, I mean, what choice do we have?"

Romney also faces challenges in his attempt to appeal to the middle class and people in small-town America. The tour is aimed at a segment of America he has little direct experience with. The son of a governor, Romney has lived largely in upscale suburban settings and is worth as much as $250 million.

Democrats lashed out at Romney's message on multiple fronts, including in the skies above his two New Hampshire bus stops. One small plane towed a banner that said: "Romney's Every Millionaire Counts Tour," while another hired by the Romney campaign towed a competing message: "Romney for president - 2012."

A team of Democratic mayors also charged that the Republican's business career and term as Massachusetts governor was defined by efforts to help the wealthy at the expense of the middle class.

"This 'middle class under the bus tour' is going to give us a chance to highlight those differences," Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa told reporters during a conference call organized by the Obama campaign.

The bus tour ? Romney planned to fly each night to the next state ? is Romney's first traditional campaign swing aimed at undecided voters in six battleground states ? New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Wisconsin, Michigan and Iowa ? that Obama won in 2008 and that may decide the presidential election in November.

Speaking earlier Friday at the New Hampshire farm where he launched his campaign a year ago, Romney told supporters they don't have to "settle for these years of disappointment and decline." He promised a revived America.

Americans are "worried and anxious. They are tired of being tired. And they are tired of a detached and distant president who never seems to hear their voices," Romney said, as he stood on the bed of a farm's tractor trailer and read from a teleprompter.

He invoked the names of famous American writers and entrepreneurs like Mark Twain, John Steinbeck and Thomas Edison while lamenting the decline of Rust Belt cities like Detroit, Pittsburgh and Cleveland.

The tour will take Romney to places "off the beaten path," his campaign said, including at least 14 small cities and towns over the five days of the tour. It will bring Romney back to the kind of retail politicking he hasn't engaged in since the early days of the Republican primary, when he campaigned in diners and coffee shops across Iowa and New Hampshire.

With that opportunity, however, comes risk.

Romney sometimes ran into trouble in less scripted environments and the bus tour is bound to test him again. At one stop at a New Hampshire before the state's primary in January, a gay veteran confronted Romney about his opposition to gay marriage. Romney also has long faced questions about his ability to connect with the average people he meets.

Romney senior strategist Russ Schriefer suggested Romney has no problem connecting with voters. "I think if you look at the polls, they like him enough," he said.

A Gallup/USA Today poll conducted in early May found that 63 percent of voters said Obama was likable while 28 percent said the same about Romney. In another poll, most of those surveyed felt Obama better understood their problems.

Blake Williams, a 26-year-old automation engineer from nearby Saco, Maine, suggested that Romney's long career in business can make it difficult for him to connect with middle-class people. But he said that won't affect his vote.

"We need somebody to get the job done, not charm people," Williams said as he waited to shake Romney's hand at the farm.

Georgians Uneasy About Sending Troops Abroad

There is an increasing groundswell of opposition in Georgia to the country?s troop commitments in Afghanistan, where 16 of its soldiers have died since they were first deployed there in 2009.

By the end of this year, the Georgian contingent in the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan, ISAF, will increase by 750 to reach nearly 1,700. This makes Georgia the largest non-NATO contributor of forces to ISAF. They are currently deployed in the restive southern Helmand region and around the capital Kabul.

At the time of Georgia?s brief war with Russia in August 2008, it had some 2,000 soldiers deployed in Iraq. Defence experts argue that with relations with Moscow still tense, it is unwise to increase the number of troops serving abroad.

The government has not announced how long the deployment will last, but NATO plans to withdraw its forces by the end of 2014.

The absence of 1,700 members of a military numbering 37,000 might seem insignificant, but the forces in question are an American-trained elite. And in addition to those on active service in Afghanistan at any one time, another 1,700 are undergoing training ahead of their rotational deployment, and the same number are resting up after returning home.

Speaking in 2010, five months after the first Georgian troops went to Afghanistan. President Mikhael Saakashvili noted that his country was the biggest per capita contributor of troops.

Officials dismiss suggestions that gaving a contingent in Afghanistan leaves a gap in the military, insisting a deal is in place whereby the troops will be sent back home swiftly the moment they are needed.

That is not enough to placate critics like Irakli Aladashvili, editor-in-chief of the defence magazine Arsenal.

?In the Georgian-Russian war of 2008, the 2,000 Georgian servicemen serving as part of the international force in Iraq were only sent back on the third day,? he said. ?That?s the context in which almost a whole brigade is being deployed to the ISAF mission. Sending that number of servicemen could be a heavy burden for national security.?

Public opinion seems to be against the idea, especially as casualties have risen. The most recent death of a Georgian soldier was that of Valerian Khujadze, killed by a landmine in Helmand in late April.

In an recent online poll by the www.live.ge site, 95 per cent of nearly 2,000 respondents opposed the troop presence.

Giorgi Antadze of the Euro-Caucasian University in Tbilisi said the signs were clear ? ?the public cannot understand why the authorities are sending another battalion to one of the hottest of the world?s hot spots when there are already Georgian troops there?.

Georgian units have taken part in a number of other international missions since 1999, first in Kosovo, then for a 2004 Afghan election, and then in Iraq. Officials say it is important for Georgia to support peacekeeping efforts, and also to build stronger ties to partners like NATO and the United States.

Some experts argue that these relationships need more work than just offering military manpower.

?An increased military contribution in Afghanistan is just one of many necessary preconditions for joining NATO,? Tengo Pkhakadze, director of the International Centre for Strategic Studies in Tbilisi, said. ?It?s by no means a guarantee [of membership] for Georgia. NATO?s requirements include attaining a high degree of democracy, an independent judiciary, freedom of the press and fair elections.?

Using new media, Chinese try out food activism

Shanghai grad student Wu Heng hadn't planned to become a food activist but he couldn't stop himself after reading a news story about cooks slathering pork in chemicals to make it look and smell like costlier cuts of beef.

"I never knew you could make fake beef!" said Wu, who described being shocked and disgusted by the revelation. "I suddenly felt I needed to do something, to create a platform so consumers could know about this kind of thing."

The result of Wu's epiphany a year ago is the cheeky and informative food scandal database 'Throw It Out the Window,' a homegrown resource that tries to alert the Chinese public to the many dangers lurking at the supermarket and on the restaurant table.

The site and other tech tools like it, including a new iPhone app that gives daily news feeds about the latest food scandals, underscore the deep anger in China over the country's persistent food safety problems and a new willingness among ordinary people to take the matter into their own hands.

Driven partly by the government's foot dragging on food safety, such grassroots activism is unusual in a country where citizen action is discouraged, and often dangerous.

After reading about the fake beef problem a year ago, Wu, 26, dashed off an online appeal seeking help for the new project, his exuberance clear from the 17 exclamation points in his May 11, 2011 blog title that ended with a rallying cry: "Come on, we can change something."

A few dozen volunteers now help Wu maintain the site, which is updated daily with Chinese language news reports about food dangers. It's become so popular, it crashed from all the traffic on May 3. Wu says 5 million people visited his site over the last month and a half.

On Thursday, the site had reports about maggots in hot dogs and a workshop that was churning out fake honey made from water, white sugar, thickener and coloring.

Wu, whose studies focus on modern Shanghai and are unrelated to food, said his crash course in contemporary food problems has steered him away from meat and milk, which seem plagued more than others by quality issues.

On Wednesday, leading Chinese dairy company Inner Mongolia Yili Industrial Group Co. announced it was recalling a line of baby formula because of unusual levels of mercury.

Wu titled his "Throw it Out the Window" site in a nod to a story he'd read about U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt allegedly throwing a breakfast sausage out the window of the White House after reading about the state of meat processing in Chicago. Roosevelt's signature on legislation in 1906 paved the way for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

China has its own State Food and Drug Administration but responsibility for food safety is shared across a patchwork of agencies and offices, including ministries of health and agriculture, meaning problems frequently fall through the cracks. The government has shown itself so incapable that Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao was again this week promising more action.

Wen called for greater public involvement in food safety and even said whistle blowers should be rewarded.

But such whistle blowing and activism pose a tough test for the Chinese government, which doesn't tolerate any political activism and only allows rights work for some issues, including health and food, within very narrow limits.

Those who have tried to expose food problems or pushed too hard for compensation in the aftermath of scandals have faced persecution.
