Forgotten star cluster now found useful in studies of Sun and hunt for Earth-like planets

ScienceDaily (June 23, 2012) ? A loose group of stars, known for over 180 years but never before studied in detail, has been revealed to be an important new tool in the quest to understand the evolution of stars like the Sun, and in the search for planets like Earth. "We have discovered that a previously unappreciated open star cluster, which is a little younger than our Sun, holds great promise for use as a standard gauge in fundamental stellar astrophysics," said Jason T. Wright, an assistant professor of astronomy and astrophysics at Penn State University, who conceived and initiated the research.

Wright's research team's first paper on the cluster, known as Ruprecht 147 or NGC 6774, has been submitted to the Astronomical Journal for publication. Team member Jason Curtis, a graduate student in Wright's lab, led the work for this paper and will present the team's project in Barcelona, Spain, later this month at the 17th Cambridge Workshop on Cool Stars, Stellar Systems, and the Sun.

When searching for planets with an Earth-like mass and an orbit that allows liquid water to exist on the surface, astronomers often search around stars the mass of the Sun and smaller. "The Ruprecht 147 cluster is very unusual and very important astrophysically because it is close to Earth and its stars are closer to the Sun's age than those in all the other nearby clusters," Wright said. "For the first time, we now have a useful laboratory in which to search for and study bright stars that are of similar mass and also of similar age as the Sun. When we discover planets around Sun-like and lower-mass stars, we will be able to interpret how old those stars are by comparing them to the stars in this cluster."

Penn State University astronomers have determined that 80 of the stars in this photo are members of the long-known but underappreciated star cluster Ruprecht 147. In this image, the brightest of these stars are circled in green, and the less-bright ones are circled in red. These stars were born out of the same cloud of gas and dust approximately 2-billion years ago, and now are traveling together through space, bound by the force gravity. The astronomers have identified this cluster as a potentially important new reference gauge for fundamental stellar astrophysics. Credit: Chris Beckett and Stefano Meneguolo, Royal Astronomical Society of Canada. Annotations by Jason Curtis, Penn State University.

Wright's team has shown that Ruprecht 147 is 800 to 1,000 light years from Earth, which is so close that it is bright enough to be seen with binoculars in late-summertime skies in the constellation Sagittarius. "All of the other nearby clusters astronomers study contain stars much younger than the Sun, and all of the older stars are more than 3,000 light years away. So this cluster, being both old and close, provides a unique opportunity," Wright said. Although it appears to be relatively large on the sky, the cluster can be difficult to spot because it is not very compact and it is located in the densest, brightest region between Earth and the center of the Milky Way galaxy.

To study the Ruprecht 147 cluster, which is much larger on the sky than most objects astronomers study, the Wright's team had to use some specialized, wide-field cameras -- including those on the MMT telescope in Arizona and the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope on Mauna Kea in Hawaii -- in order to get its many stars within the frame of view. "Even with these wide-field cameras, we've had to build mosaics of images to cover the whole cluster and to take very quick snapshots so that we don't overexpose the brightest stars, Wright said. "Most modern telescopes weren't designed for clusters so bright and close."

When the object was first discovered in 1830 by British astronomer John Herschel, he described it as "a very large straggling space full of loose stars." He subsequently included it in the General Catalog of astronomical objects, which he compiled based on the observations of his father William Herschel. "The cluster was rediscovered in the 1960s by Jaroslav Ruprecht, which is how it got its current name, but until now no astronomers paid it any special attention, probably because many presumed it was an asterism -- a chance alignment of unrelated stars," Wright said.

Wright's team's work has proven, for the first time, that the Ruprecht 147 cluster is only a bit younger than the Sun on the astronomical time scale. The stars in Ruprecht 147 are about 2.5-billion years old, or about half the age of the Sun, and about the age the Sun was when the first multicellular life emerged on Earth.

The team's initial observations also have measured the distance to Ruprecht 147, as well as the directions and velocities of its stars to verify that they are moving together through space in three dimensions, both across the sky and in the same angle away from Earth. These observations confirm that these stars are members of a true cluster, not just a random pattern on the sky. Wright's team already has identified 100 stars as members of the cluster, and is working to find more.

Wright said that most of the work for this initial paper was done by Jason Curtis as part of his dissertation research. Curtis's work includes observations with the Canada France Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) and the Keck telescope in Hawaii, the Lick Observatory in California, and the MMT Observatory in Arizona. "This project is exciting for me as a graduate student because it gives me the opportunity to use the latest astronomy techniques and instrumentation to explore a star cluster that has never before been investigated to this extent," Curtis said. "While this project has given me training in well-established, fundamental methods of astronomy observation and analysis, it also is opening up new doors to cutting-edge astrophysics research." For further studies, Curtis is participating in observations with the Magellan telescope in Chile and NASA's orbiting Chandra X-Ray Telescope.

In addition to Wright and Curtis, other co-authors of the team's first scientific paper include Angie Wolfgang, of the University of California, Santa Cruz; John Brewer, of Yale University; and John Asher Johnson of the California Institute of Technology. The U. S. National Science Foundation provided financial support for this research.

"Our project with this important cluster is just beginning," Wright said "Eventually, it is going to let us find and study nearby stars with a mass like the Sun's, to help in the hunt for Earth-like planets, and to test and improve the models astronomers use to understand the evolution of stars including our own Sun."

Is Banner Advertising Better Than PPC? | Internet Contents

Banner advertising was around long before Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising, and it?s no big news that PPC is the new dominant advertising tool for many businesses. After all, PPC is laser focused and very direct in working to draw a very specific customer type to your site.

Banner advertising has been described by some as being akin to the dodo bird. In essence the feeling among some is that this kind of advertising is nearing a point of extinction and may be remembered with warm fuzzies, but may not be missed.

However, a quick trip into the depths of cyber space and you will find all kinds of banner ads, and major corporations develop and use them.

Do they know something you don?t?

I think what some of these corporations do know is that banner advertising can move beyond simple static graphics. In essence many banner ads today are being developed to include bold interaction that may appear as a game or perhaps as a mini movie.

These banner ads serve a unique niche for the visually oriented consumer.

The use of banner advertising may be used when the advertising business has a fairly clear understanding of the benefit of advertising on a specific site or sites. For instance if a site draws thousands of visitors a day and your product or service fits the demographic of the site then using banner ads that can help the visitor visualize something more then PPC text has the ability to facilitate a better Return on Investment (ROI).

If PPC is the ?everyman? advertising method then the new generation of banner ads is for the expert advertiser. Banner ads can help you motivate potential customers to visit your site from the confines of a site they trust and a site you value for their ability to generate traffic to your site.

Banner advertising is also good for an industry specific website. If there is a site that is in concert with your business goals and directives it might make sense to look into using banner advertising on their site.

While banner advertising is not as laser focused as PPC it can be a significant help if you are willing to do your own research to see what sites may best benefit your business.

There are still banner exchange programs, but they are often meaningless in that they may send some customers to your site, but they aren?t targeted and the individuals may not be especially motivated beyond initial curiosity. Besides you may be required to place banner advertising on your site that doesn?t really fit with your demographic (or potentially objectionable) just to participate in the banner link exchange.

There is also the question of banner ad development. Unless you are especially skilled in graphic design you may need to outsource the banner ad development from a third party.

You may be able to access a low-cost or no-cost banner ad through a site like http://www.logobogo.com, but a banner ad will need to be created in either a visually static display or a flash designed banner with very specific dimensions.

So, to recap ? the banner advertising of today requires a greater sense of business research to find the best fit for your advertising dollar and banner development is something you will need to develop as you begin to look into what possibilities exist in this refreshed advertising medium.

Because they are probably one of the more complicated classes I have decided to make a thread devoted to them. This is where you can post some questions about this class and how they work.

Lets go over the basics shall we?

Q: What makes an artifactor different then other magic users?
A: Good question computer. Artifactors are first off, are not connected to the magic realm.

Q: What does that mean? How can they use magic then?
A: Another good question compie. While they themselves are not magical, they can tap into magic of the item. The magic of the item only exists in the item.

Q: What makes an Artifact an Artifact
A: Another fine question my good computer. An artifact is an item that has somehow gained its own magical properties. It is a rare item, or made of rare materials. It usually has some importance to the wielder.

Q: How does an item become and Artifact?
A: You have a lot of questions computer. An item comes an artifact through a few ways. Two of the most common ways are
1. A great event has happened, one that has/can change the path of history. Such as a lute belonging to a king that conquered that brought peace.
2. The item has been left over a long time in a place with residual magic. This takes thousands of years. Example. Ted's Rock.

Q: Who is Ted and how did he get his rock?
A: I will tell the story when I explain how Artifactors find their items compie. Calm yourself.

Q: Can Artifactors use magic without their artifact?
A: No. They can not. That is because they cannot connect to the magic realm.

Q: Can Artifactors use more then one elemental type?
A: Yes. The reason is actually because they aren't exactly using magic from the magic realm. But the draw back to this is that their magic isn't as strong as a mages would be. However, this isn't such a bad thing, the more experienced ones can switch mid battle and attack with an opposing element. They can heal minor wounds but not major ones.

Q: What happens if an artifactors artifact breaks?
A: Then my good computer, they can no longer use their magic, and if they ever want to use magic again they better find a new artifact.

Q: How do artifactors find their artifact?
A: You just want to hear the story of Ted and his rock compie. Fine. Artifactors, for a lack of a better explanation, hear an artifact that they can wield. But only they can hear it, not anyone else, and not, necessarily, an other artifactor. Here is the story of how the simple shepherd, Ted, found his artifact.
Bob and Ted was just walking around one day, and suddenly Ted turned to Bob, pointed at the rock and said. "This rock is humming!" Bob looked at him and said "The f kind of nonsense are you talking about Ted?"
"Bro I swear to god this thing is f-ing humming"
"Dude maybe you should try and make shite explode with it!"
So Ted picked up the rock, concentrated hard, and pointed at a sheep.
BOOM
"BRO I JUST TOTALLY MADE THAT SHEEP EXPLODE WITH THIS ROCK"
"TOTALLY RAD DUDE YOU'RE AN ARTIFICOR"
It turns out the rock was sitting directly ontop a pocket of magic deep underneath the earth and had, over time, gathered its energy. How was the rock important to Ted? Well it was often where he would stop by and he had once used the rock, before it had fully turned into an artifact, to protect his sheep from a lion. Yes, Ted did just make one of his sheep explode, but in his defense it was rather cool. Oh, Bob later became a holy warrior and his sword is an artifact. Ted cannot use it though, because he is more attuned to things that remind him of his sheep and not of swords.

Q: That doesn't sound very much like something a fantasy person would say.
A: And that doesn't sound very much like a question, so shut up compie.

Q: Can an artifactor use another artifactors artifacts?
A: Try saying that ten times fast. The answer is...well yes and no.

Q: What does that mean?
A: Well it means that an artifact also needs to have something/be an item of something they feel close too, such as someone close to music may only be able to use music related but it may only be stringed instruments or something. So if two artifactors have a love of stringed instruments it is possible that the can both use that artifact. But it is a very very rare occurrence because of the other determining factors mentioned above.

That is all for now. Any questions feel free to ask. I will do my best to answer them.

You said you would always be there for me...I guess you lied

Google CEO Speechless Before Annual Event

Google CEO Larry Page

Google CEO Larry Page remains silent about coming Google attractions, not because he refuses to speak but because he can't.

During the company's annual shareholders meeting Thursday, Executive Chariman Eric Schmidt announced that Page has lost his voice and will be unable to do any public speaking for at least a month. That means Page won't speak at next week's annual Google I/O developers conference in San Francisco or during the company's quarterly earnings conference call next month.

"That said, Larry will, of course, continue to run the company," said Schmidt, who is stepping into Page's shoes as the voice of Google for the time being.

Google has not released information on Page's medical condition, described the cause of his loss of voice, or said when he will return to public speaking events.

The 39-year-old CEO will communicate via email and other forms of written messaging during his recovery. Schmidt quoted co-founder Sergey Brin who joked that this could "make Larry a better CEO because he will have to choose his words carefully."

At Thursday's meeting, shareholders approved an April proposal that allows Page, Schmidt, and Brin to issue new shares without losing any of their own voting power, Bloomberg reported. However, that change won't happen until a class action lawsuit by shareholders is resolved.

HBT: M's pick named college player of the year

Mike Zunino was selected by the Mariners with the third overall pick in the draft two weeks ago and today Baseball America named the University of Florida catcher their college player of the year.

Zunino hit .322 with a 1.069 OPS for the Gators, ranking fourth in the country with 19 homers, 10th with 67 RBIs, and 11th with a .669 slugging percentage. He also received praise for his leadership and defense behind the plate.

He hasn?t signed with the Mariners yet because the Gators were only recently eliminated from the College World Series, but the slot amount for the No. 3 pick is $5.2 million.

UCLA pitcher Trevor Bauer was Baseball America?s college player of the year in 2011 and the 21-year-old right-hander is already at Triple-A after being selected third overall by the Diamondbacks. Other winners during the past five years are Anthony Rendon, Stephen Strasburg, Buster Posey, and David Price.

Effective Advice In Web Marketing ? The Options | Offers2book.com

If you have been doing an Internet business for some time, you are probably aware of how important it is to have your followers trust you. Trust is a pillar of successfully marketing on the web because without it everything really does fall apart. Situations where money changes hands is not always where this is needed the most. For instance, try building an e-mail list when your audience doesn?t actually trust you at all. Failure is inevitable for anything that you do online, including list building, if your audience does not trust you at all.

Growing a responsive email list is one of the best ways to built trust with your customers. You have lots of options for creating trust in those people who aren?t on your list. Either way, people always discuss online businesses they trust, so you can use this to advantage. The only way you can be effective with your list is to build relationships. This means building bonds with everyone on your list at all times. So you will be consistent in your messages and give them valuable content. Don?t just think of the people on your list as an easy source of profit, but give them what they want. In time, they will warm up to you and the trust will be there. Over the years, this approach has been proven to work.

There are several things that you can do, or not do, that will make you trustworthy in the eyes of potential customers. Hiding and secrecy are things that will get you red flagged by Internet users every day. It is beneficial to be visible on the Internet, even though you do not have to be outgoing at all. Social media is a perfect way to get this done. If you want to do online marketing, there really is no better way to get noticed than with social media. But you can bet that if someone new comes to your site and likes what they see, they will Google you. An excellent way to find out about you is to look at your social media profile page. They will do this as well. If they do not find anything or it all looks closed and cloaked, then that is another story.

It is never a good idea to create the impression that you are trying to hide something. It tends to not work out for you at all. Most people have seen this, especially if they have been online for many years. Most people will look at this and believe that a scam is what they have found. In most cases, people will suspect that something bad is happening. You don?t want that to occur. But this is not about something accidentally done or overlooked. If an IM marketer is not for real or something is up, then there will not be a lot of openness. You need to think about these things, especially in regard to your own website.

In conclusion, you have to realize that people may take a while to trust you entirely. It is important that you do not force the issue of trust ? it needs to be earned. You can learn how to do certain things to encourage it, and that is what the above tips are all about.

Judge tosses out 3 more counts against Sandusky

Jerry Sandusky made no comments as he arrived for court Thursday in Bellefonte, Pa.

By Kimberly Kaplan, NBC News, and M. Alex Johnson, msnbc.com

The judge in the trial of? Jerry Sandusky threw out three more of the child sexual abuse charges Thursday against the former Penn State University assistant football coach?as jurors prepared to begin their deliberations.

Defense attorneys were delivering their closing argument after Judge John Cleland gave the jurors their final instructions in Centre County court in Bellefonte, Pa. After closing arguments from the prosecution, deliberations could begin as early as Thursday afternoon.

Kimberly Kaplan of NBC News reported from Bellefonte, Pa. M. Alex Johnson is a reporter for msnbc.com. Follow M. Alex Johnson on Twitter and Facebook.

Two grand jury reports originally returned 52 counts accusing Sandusky, 68, the former longtime defensive coordinator for the Penn State University football team, of having used his connection to one of the nation's premier college football programs to "groom" 10 boys, whom he met through his Second Mile charity for troubled children, for sexual relationships.

Cleland had already thrown out one of the counts, and Thursday, he dismissed three more.

Two were charges alleging involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with one of the 10 alleged victims, which Cleland said the evidence didn't support. Had the jury convicted Sandusky on those two counts, Cleland said, he would have been required to set the convictions aside.

The third count was a duplicate of another count, he ruled.

Sandusky made no comment as he arrived at court Thursday morning with his wife, Dottie, who testified Tuesday?that she never heard or saw her husband engage in any inappropriate behavior with children during their 45 years of marriage.

Sandusky had been widely expected to?testify?Wednesday before his lawyers abruptly rested their case after a lengthy conference in the judge's chambers.

A source close to Sandusky said "there was no one factor that led to the decision," but?NBC News reported Thursday?that?Sandusky decided not to testify after his lawyers were warned that prosecutors would call his adopted son, Matt, as a rebuttal witness if he did so. The sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, told NBC News that Matt Sandusky was prepared to deliver damaging testimony about his father.

NBC's Savannah Guthrie discusses why the prosecution didn't call Jerry Sandusky's adopted son as a witness if he was able to provide damaging evidence.

In his final instructions, Cleland told jurors that they had great leeway in determining whether Sandusky's alleged behavior, while possibly troubling, may not have been criminal. ?

"It is certainly a crime for a man to have oral sex with a boy," he said, but "... other forms of physical contact are more problematic."

For example, he said, "It's not necessarily a crime for a man to take a shower with a boy. It's not necessarily a crime for a man to wash a boy's hair or lather his back or shoulders or to engage in back rubbing."

The bottom line was Sandusky's intent, "not the child's reaction," he told the jurors, who heard eight of the 10 alleged victims testify that they were traumatized by Sandusky's alleged advances.

"Any behavior motivated by sexual behavior was a crime," but if Sandusky "did not act out of sexual desire, then he did not commit a crime, even if he did exercise bad judgment."

In other words, "You must distinguish a display of innocent affection from lust," Cleland instructed.

The trial, which opened two weeks ago, is the culmination of an investigation of Sandusky?that led to the firing of head coach Joe Paterno, a college football legend who won more games than any other major college coach in history. Sandusky, who was at his side for many of those victories, was for many years presumed to be Paterno's heir-apparent.

Paterno died in January, a few weeks after the Penn State Board of Trustees dismissed him for not having done enough to stop Sandusky's alleged abuse.

Coup Claims As Paraguay President Removed

Paraguay's Congress has removed President Fernando Lugo from office after a rapid impeachment trial - which he said was tantamount to a coup but pledged to accept.

Mr Lugo was found guilty of mishandling armed clashes over a land eviction in which 17 police and peasant farmers were killed last week.

In line with Paraguay's constitution, he was quickly replaced by Vice President Federico Franco, a fierce opponent of the president. The centrist Liberal Party politician was sworn in on Friday evening.

Mr Lugo, a former Roman Catholic bishop who quit the Church to run for president on a social reform programme, said: "Although the law's been twisted like a fragile branch in the wind, I accept Congress' decision."

Mr Lugo, who compared his sudden impeachment to a coup, also urged supporters to ensure any demonstrations in his support were peaceful.

Several thousand of his supporters gathered outside Congress in the sleepy capital Asuncion and tried to break through police lines as the verdict was given. Police fired teargas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.

The Senate voted 39-4 to remove Mr Lugo the day after lawmakers in the lower house agreed in a sudden, near-unanimous vote to impeach him.

Mr Lugo, 61, a mild-mannered leftist who speaks the Guarani Indian language, vowed to champion the needs of poor Paraguayans when he was elected four years ago.

His election ended six decades of rule by the Colorado party in one of South America's poorest and most unstable countries.

The speed of the impeachment trial raised concerns among other governments in the region and they dispatched their foreign ministers to Asuncion. Some warned of possible sanctions if Mr Lugo was ousted.

Mr Lugo's election raised expectations among his supporters that he would tackle rampant corruption and gaping income inequalities in the soy-exporting nation of six million people.

However, he has struggled to carry out his reform agenda, including his promise to redistribute land to peasant farmers, due to the opposition's tight grip on Congress.
