Nora Ephron Leukemia: Explaining The Iconic Writer's Illness

Academy Award-winning writer and director Nora Ephron has passed away after battling an aggressive form of leukemia, according to news reports. She was 71.

Ephron was behind iconic films such as "You've Got Mail," "When Harry Met Sally," "Sleepless in Seattle" and "Julie & Julia."

CBS News reported that Dr. Gail Roboz, who is Ephron's oncologist, said she died from acute myeloid leukemia. She passed away at Weill-Cornell/New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

However, the International Business Times reported that a Washington Post columnist was told that she actually died from the blood disorder myelodysplasia, which she had been diagnosed with earlier.

Leukemia is cancer that occurs in the blood-forming tissues, such as the bone marrow, according to the Mayo Clinic. In people with leukemia, blood cells aren't produced properly by the bone marrow; over time, these abnormal cells grow and overcome the healthy cells.

There are expected to be 47,150 new cases of the disease this year, and 23,540 deaths, according to the National Cancer Institute.

The main types of leukemia are grouped into four kinds: two chronic, and two acute, each depending on what kind of cell is affected -- either the lymphoid cells, or the myeloid cells. Acute leukemia is aggressive and requires quick treatment, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, while chronic leukemia occurs more slowly and can go undiagnosed for some time.

Ephron was reported to have acute myeloid leukemia. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society said that treatment is imperative immediately after diagnosis with this kind of leukemia.

Risk factors for leukemia include genetic diseases, blood disorders, having been exposed to radiation or certain chemicals, having gone through cancer treatment previously, smoking, and having a family history of the disease, according to the Mayo Clinic.

The disease is especially deadly among young people -- it is the most common cancer and cause of death from cancer in people younger than age 20, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The disease is treated with chemotherapy, radiation therapy, stem cell transplants to replace disease bone marrow with healthy bone marrow, biological therapy to boost the immune system and targeted therapy to attack the cancer cells, the Mayo Clinic reported.

Damian Dovarganes, File/Associated Press ? FILE- In this Monday, June 18, 2012, file photo, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer unveils its?Surface?, a new tablet computer to compete with Apple?s iPad at Hollywood?s Milk Studios in Los Angeles. Microsoft announced Monday, June 25, 2012, that is paying $1.2 billion to buy Yammer, an Internet startup that has built a social network similar to Facebook for the business world.

By Associated Press, Updated: Monday, June?25, 5:43?PM

SAN FRANCISCO ? Microsoft is buying Internet startup Yammer for $1.2 billion in an attempt to bring Facebook-like sharing features to its widely used suite of business software applications.Yammer specializes in creating private social networks so employees within the same company can keep tabs on what colleagues are working on. That?s similar to how Facebook?s online social network allows friends and families to track what?s happening in each other?s personal lives.

The deal, announced Monday, comes nearly two weeks after word of Microsoft?s negotiations with Yammer first leaked out in published reports. The acquisition represents Microsoft?s latest attempt to adapt to a major shift in the technology industry, one that is fueling demand for more Internet-connected services and social-networking tools. The upheaval is threatening to marginalize Microsoft Corp., the world?s largest software maker, and ultimately diminish the amount of money coming in from sales of its Windows operating system and a wide range of applications designed primarily for personal computers. As part of its effort to remain relevant, Microsoft paid $8.5 billion last year for Internet video chat service Skype in the largest acquisition in its history.

In another bold move, Microsoft last week unveiled its own tablet computer, Surface, to compete with Apple Inc.?s iPad. Microsoft has designed Surface to run on the upcoming Windows 8, the biggest change to the company?s operating system in nearly two decades.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is counting on Yammer?s sharing tools to ensure that long-established Microsoft applications, including its word processing and spreadsheet programs, remain vital components for getting work done. Google Inc. has emerged as a threat with a toolbox of similar programs that run primarily over the Internet rather than on individual machines.

?Think of Yammer as a fundamental part of our Office family,? Ballmer said on a Monday conference call.

Microsoft will have much of the same autonomy given to Skype since that deal closed eight months ago. Yammer will continue to be run from its San Francisco headquarters by its co-founder and CEO, David Sacks. It will also continue to provide its services separately from Microsoft?s offerings.

Microsoft did not give a time frame for when the deal should close.

Gartner Inc. analyst Larry Cannell said Microsoft?s latest acquisition was smart and reflected ?a recognition that the social capabilities in Microsoft?s products have been deficient.?

Investors couldn?t muster much enthusiasm for the deal on another somber day for the stock market. Microsoft?s stock fell 82 cents, or nearly 3 percent, to close at $29.88.

Although other companies such as Jive Software Inc. and Salesforce.com Inc. are building social networks for businesses, Yammer shares the most DNA with Facebook Inc.

When it started in 2008, Yammer raised its initial funding from Peter Thiel ? Facebook?s first major investor. Thiel formerly worked with Sacks while they were both executives at PayPal, an online payment service that eBay Inc. bought for $1.5 billion in 2002.

Beijing?s new leaders will face pressure from a growing grass-roots army of online activists.

Yammer has relied largely on word of mouth to attract more than 5 million registered users at more than 200,000 companies worldwide. The service depends on employees to use its free tools to set up a private network within their company. Once the network is getting wide usage, Yammer then tries to sell more sophisticated features to the companies. As a privately held company, Yammer hasn?t disclosed its revenue. In a Monday note about the Microsoft deal, Nomura Securites analyst Rick Sherlund estimated Yammer?s revenue at $15 million to $20 million last year. The company has been expanding so rapidly that it had been considered a prime candidate to pursue an IPO by next year.

The stock of Yammer rival Jive Software has gained 65 percent since it went public six months ago, though it fell 74 cents Monday to close at $19.75.

The IPO market has gone into a deep freeze since Facebook flopped in its closely watching stock market debut last month. Instead of soaring as had been widely anticipated, Facebook shares plummeted during the first few weeks of trading. Although the stock has rallied recently, it remains 16 percent below the IPO price of $38, which had minted Facebook Inc. with a market value of $104 billion. Facebook shares dropped 99 cents, or 3 percent, Monday to close at $32.06.

Sacks said the frosty conditions in the IPO market didn?t influence Yammer?s decision to sell to Microsoft. The negotiations between the two companies began before Facebook?s IPO, according to Saks and Ballmer.

?Our thinking was based on the fit with Microsoft and the fact that we think Microsoft is a great partner for us in expanding the service and taking it to the next level,? Sacks said.

The sale will provide a hefty return for Yammer?s early backers. The startup has raised about $142 million in venture capital.

Traxpay Takes $4M From Earlybird, Wants To Be The PayPal Of B2B Online Payments

Screen shot 2012-06-26 at 16.47.55The online and mobile payments markets have seen a number of disruptions -- from slashing fees for processing to turning mobile handsets into card processing devices -- but many of those efforts have been aimed at the consumer segment. Today, Traxpay, a German payments startup focused on online payments in the business-to-business segment, is announcing its own advance in this space: it has raised $4 million in a round led by Earlybird, one of the bigger VCs in the region. Traxpay will use the funds to continue building out its business in Europe and start its expansion to the U.S. later this year, as part of its ambition to become the PayPal of B2B online payments -- a $250 billion market. Separately, the company also announced that it has appointed a new CEO, John Bruggeman, who has previously held senior positions at enterprise software companies?Cadence, Wind River and Mercury Interactive, as well as Netscape.

New national poll shows women favor mandate more than men

As the Supreme Court prepares to issue its ruling on Thursday, Americans are divided along party, ideology and gender lines on a key provision of the healthcare law.

A new National Agenda Opinion Poll by the University of Delaware's Center for Political Communication reveals women are significantly more likely to support health insurance requirements than men. Additionally, Democrats and liberals overwhelmingly favor insurance mandates, whereas large majorities of Republicans and conservatives oppose them.

The national telephone survey of 906 Americans was conducted by the Center for Political Communication from May 20 to June 6. Professors David C. Wilson and Paul Brewer supervised the study. Wilson, the center's coordinator for public opinion initiatives, said "the results suggest President Obama may actually have more political capital for his health insurance requirement than is widely reported."

The survey first asked "Do you favor or oppose a requirement that all people have health insurance?" Pollsters then went on to ask the same question four other ways inserting the terms: federal requirement, state requirement, federal requirement signed by President Barack Obama and state requirement signed by former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.

Gender Gap

Women were significantly more likely to support health insurance requirements than men, particularly at the federal level. Women show their strongest support for a federal health care requirement signed by Obama. They support state level requirements at the same level as men, whether Romney is mentioned or not.

Brewer, the center's associate director for research, said, "No matter what the Supreme Court does, its ruling will go against the views of a sizable portion of the public. Public opinion about a mandate is deeply polarized along partisan and ideological lines."

Partisan Divide

The versions asking about "a state requirement" (supported by 54 percent) or "the state requirement, signed by former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney" (supported by 56 percent) received lower support than the federal version mentioning Obama.

A closer look at the results reveals wide gaps between Republicans and Democrats and between liberals and conservatives on all five versions of the question. For each version, support among Democrats and liberals is much greater than support among Republicans and conservatives.

Democrats and liberals are more likely to support a state requirement than a federal requirement, but when Romney's name is mentioned they support a state requirement less. Republicans and conservatives tend to support requirements by Obama and Romney more than the generic idea of a state or federal requirement without a political figure's name attached.

"The findings among Republicans and conservatives suggest they do not draw the same distinction between state and federal mandates that Romney has drawn in his campaign," Wilson said.

About the study

The National Agenda Opinion Project research was funded by the University of Delaware's Center for Political Communication.

Results are based on telephone interviews with a nationally representative sample of 906 adults living in the continental United States. Telephone interviews were carried out using a dual sampling frame consisting of both landline (n=551) and cell phone (n=355, including 158 without a landline phone) extensions.

The survey was managed by Princeton Survey Research Associates International (PSRAI), and the data were collected through English only interviews by Princeton Data Source.

The data were collected from May 30 to June 5, 2012. Statistical results are weighted to correct known demographic discrepancies. The margin of sampling error for the complete set of weighted data is 3.9 percentage points. This estimate includes a calculated "design effect."

Readers should be aware that in addition to sampling error, question wording and practical difficulties in conducting surveys can introduce error or bias into the findings of public opinion polls. To see the topline results, visit: www.udel.edu/ocm/pdf/ToplineResults.pdf
