Jon Urbanek, ?senior vice president of sales and marketing for employer markets for Florida Blue.

At Florida Blue, the Supreme Court?s decision to uphold the Affordable Care Act means the increased focus on reaching consumers will continue.

?We?re going to shift into more of a quality or value-based reimbursement,? Urbanek said. ?We need to agree on key quality things physicians should be doing, and help them with the information and provide them with incentives.

?We need to be working with the providers,? Urbanek said. ?We?re not going to get any further with hospitals, doctors and health plans beating each other up over rates. We need to start working together.?

gus - No Communication, No Relationship: 5 Ways to Make a Great ...

Tell me and I?ll forget, show me and I may remember, involve me and I?ll understand.?It may be an old adage, but?for?non-profits seeking to connect with supporters, sponsors, donors, and volunteers, it?s a good one to keep in mind.?People are busy. They?re out there?taking care of?their own needs and if you want?their attention?you?d better have a compelling story.

?

Shouting about how great you are, no matter how?big your megaphone, isn?t going to do it. You need to buildrelationships.?Building relationships means communicating. No communication, no relationship.

?

Yes?it?s hard.?Resources?are?stretched?and it?s?a dilemmatrying?to decide?which communications channel mattersmost.?In person is best but hardly?feasible?all the time. So do you send?email?blasts,?direct mail,?or?spend time updating your?Facebook and Twitter?feeds??Or?maybe you should start a?blog? And don?t forget mobile!

?

The?fact?is, no one communication?channel is a silver bullet to success;?you?need to?share your story across multiple channels if you want to get noticed.?Why? Because?it?s highly unlikely that?your stakeholders are?all?sitting around together?at your local?Timmy?s?waiting for your email?to arrive?or?monitoring your Facebook feed. They?re busy and they?re not going to spend time looking for you?which means?it?s up to you to figure out?how to reach them.

?

These days,?most non-profits?find?an active?Facebook page and occasional email blasts are effective tools for letting people know what you?re up to. But your website is still your most important digital presence. It?s where people?go to try?to learn more about you?and is often the?first encounter?people?have with your brand?so the?welcome mat had better be out!

Still have doubts about sprucing up that?site? Studies show that most donors visit a non-profit?s website before deciding whether or not to donate.?According to a?2010report by Cygnus Applied Research*, 72 percent of Canadians give online. What?s more,?a whopping?90 percent of Canadians under the age of 35 indicated that they would make online charitable donations?that year. The researchers conclude?that online giving has surpassed the tipping point in this country.

?

So how is your website?looking? Most nonprofits believe that their?websites are not quite up to par and,?havingviewed?hundreds of?well intentioned but poorly executedsites?languishing?in cyber oblivion,?untended and neglected, I agree. It?s not pretty out there.

?

So what makes a good?website??First of?all, you can?t do anything unless?you know who you are, what you?re trying to achieve?and?who your target audience is.?Then share your vision and inspire others by creating a compelling story about your organization or cause. And never forget that a good story has a hero your audience?can relate to.People give to people, not organizations,?and yoursupporters and?donors must feel that they are part of your story.

?

Then,?consider the following:

?

1.

Overall impact and appearance. Looks aren?t everything, but if your website is having a terminal bad hair day, you?re going to have a hard time attracting new friends. Take the time to do a little research. See what everybody else is doing, discover what others are doing well and then do it even better.

?

2.

Content.?Provide good, well written?content?(i.e. no spelling or grammar?errors!)?created with your target audience in mind. If you want to persuade people to join your cause, think about?what it is about your story that will matter to them.?And switch things up frequently. Why?would someone?visit more than once if your content never changes?

?

3.

User Experience. You can have the most beautiful site in the world but if your audience can?t find what they?re looking for, you may as well go home.?Includea?search?engine?and clear navigation so people can find their way?around.

?

4.

Findability. If people?can?t find you, then, well, it?s over before it begins.

?

5.

Sociability.?It?s all about relationships, right? So have a team page with?friendly?photos?of the gang?and tell people who you are.

?

And one more?

?

6.

Optimize your site for mobile devices?iPhones, Androids, and tablets?and make sure you show people where to find you on Facebook, Twitter, via email, etc.?so they can socialize, connect,?and?share ideas?and?the?passion?you have for your cause.

Holiday boaters: Remember the manatees : Outdoors & Recreation ...

Save the Manatee Club is asking the Florida boating community to participate in manatee safety this busy Fourth of July holiday and beyond.

The club offers a variety of free public awareness materials to protect the endangered marine mammals.

Waterproof banners are free to Florida boaters. These bright, bold yellow banners act as cautionary signs and alert other boaters when manatees are present in the area with the easy-to-see directive, ?Please Slow, Manatees Below.?

Free yellow dock signs for shoreline property owners in Florida, boating decals, and new waterproof waterway cards containing safe boating information also are available from the Club. All provide the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission?s (FWC) hotline number (1-888-404-3922) for reporting manatee injuries, deaths, or harassment.

Cathie and Randy Bieber enjoy cruising from Palm Beach to Miami for weekend getaways aboard their 44-foot boat. They recently contacted the Club for a yellow boating banner.

?This banner will be a great asset, and we?ll display it frequently,? said Cathie. ?We always keep a sharp eye out when cruising on the Intracoastal for our friends, the manatees. We are very excited to have this opportunity to help these peaceful, gentle giants.?

Save the Manatee Club also offers free, family-friendly public awareness manatee signs and posters for sites where human/manatee interactions are a problem. These materials have been distributed around Florida to state, municipal, and county parks, marinas, and other places where harassment of manatees is a concern.

According to Katie Tripp, director of science and conservation for Save the Manatee Club, the public awareness signage combined with responsible boating and ?manatee manners? can save manatee lives.

?Manatees rely on knowledgeable, thoughtful boaters and waterway users for their protection from injury, harassment, or death,? Tripp said in a press release. ?Our organization can?t fully protect manatees or their aquatic habitat without the support of the boating community. Manatee-safe boating is paramount during busy holidays when more boats are out and the risks to manatees are increased.?

The free signs, banners, decals, posters, and waterway cards can be obtained by contacting Save the Manatee Club via email at education@savethemanatee.org, by regular mail at 500 N. Maitland Ave., Maitland, FL 32751, or by calling toll free at 1-800-432-JOIN (5646).

?Manatee Protection Tips for Boaters? can be found on the Club?s website at www.savethemanatee.org/boatertips.htm.

Interacting mutations promote diversity

Thursday, June 28, 2012

\Genetic diversity arises through the interplay of mutation, selection and genetic drift. In most scientific models, mutants have a fitness value which remains constant throughout. Based on this value, they compete with other types in the population and either die out or become established. However, evolutionary game theory considers constant fitness values to be a special case. It holds that the fitness of a mutation also depends on the frequency of the mutation. Scientists from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Pl?n and the University of British Columbia in Vancouver developed a model to address the scenario of mutations being frequency-dependent but having random fitness parameters. The results demonstrate that the dynamics that arise in random mutants increase the genetic diversity within a population. Fitness, though, may even decline.

Population geneticists generally study mutations with constant fitness values. However, frequency-dependent selection is a recurrent theme in evolution: it enables the evolution of new species without geographical separation (sympatric speciation) or a relatively rapid change in the immune system of a population.

A mutation may be advantageous for low frequencies, for instance, but the fitness of the mutant decreases with rising frequency. A reverse trend in the fitness value is also conceivable. "Our computer model combines aspects of population genetics and evolutionary game theory in order to obtain a new perspective on genetic evolution," says Arne Traulsen from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology. Whereas mutations have a random yet fixed fitness value in many mathematical models, this new model also enables a change in random fitness values with the frequency of the different types.

The results of the simulations show that frequency-dependent selection leads to higher genetic diversity within a population of individuals even though diversity per se is not favoured. The interaction of different mutations and the emergence of new mutants support the development of dynamic diversity in the population. One mutant does not always need to replace all other mutations or the original population. "It is possible for different mutations to exist in parallel such that a new mutant does not to completely replace the residents," says Weini Huang, lead author of the study. What is particularly interesting is the fact that diversity in this model remains naturally limited.

Fitness, on the other hand, does not necessarily rise with frequency-dependent selection in contrast to constant selection. By way of example, a mutation may arise within cells which halts the production of substances that are passed on to other cells. This can initially be advantageous; however, if it reaches fixation, the average fitness of the cell population declines. Advantageous mutations can thereby be lost and deleterious ones become established.

New Population Study Reveals Communal Ignorance, Spotlights ...

By Guest Blogger Jason Lieberman, disability advocate and Vice President and Treasurer of?Matan: For Every Child. For Every Community. The Gift of Jewish Learning, who was?diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy at 11 months.

While earning a BA in American Studies, I learned the importance of community studies and censuses as indicators of both the relative standing of communal subgroups, and communal needs and priorities. As I studied Nonprofit Management, earning an MPA, I learned their importance, as primary tools for funders, setting allocation priorities, and organizations, setting program and service objectives. Therefore, as a disability advocate, firmly entrenched in the Jewish community, I eagerly anticipated the publication of the?2011 Jewish Community Study of New York.

I was disappointed, not by what it said, but by what it omitted. Rather than showing our engagement, and growing communal impact, through its omissions, the study demonstrates the extent to which communal ignorance persists concerning people with disabilities and their families? impact on all aspects of Jewish communal life.

By my count, the study mentions the terms ?disability? and ?disabilities? each four times, all in sections referring to human services requested or unemployment and poverty, and the term ?special needs? once, in reference to requesting human services. ?Disabled? appears three times in the demographics section, but only as a cause for unemployment and poverty. ?Furthermore, while education appears 38 times, and Jewish education 11 times, special education, of either the Jewish or secular variety, was not mentioned. ?Additionally, while the study mentions engaging Jews of almost every other subgroup, we are ignored in that context.

Taken together, these facts suggest that the study?s authors view people with disabilities and their families as solely needing care, rather than people capable of being engaged, empowered and integrated community members. This, is not only untrue, and a disservice to the disability community, but, by ignoring over 20% of the population?s impact on both the community?s challenges and opportunities, most likely causes inaccurate assumptions and conclusions. In doing so, the authors powerfully demonstrate the need for more effective advocacy.

Let us, the Jewish disability community and its allies, therefore, use this report as a call to action, mobilizing through education, empowerment and advocacy, for fuller Jewish communal appreciation, recognition and integration of people with disabilities and their families.

? Jason Lieberman

(AP) ? Count 'em: 7 seconds.

That's how long French Open runner-up Sara Errani "played" at Wimbledon on Wednesday against qualifier CoCo Vandeweghe of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. ? enough time to wrap up a 6-1, 6-3 victory in the first round.

How's that possible? Because action was suspended by rain a night earlier, with the 10th-seeded Errani at match point as the 132nd-ranked Vandeweghe served.

When they resumed, after the customary several-minute warmup ritual of baseline strokes, volleys, overheads and serves, Vandeweghe tossed up a ball and hit it into the net. Moments later, she hit her second serve into the net, too, to complete the double-fault that ended the match, right then and there ? leaving both women smiling and spectators guffawing. Errani joined in the laughter as she packed away her racket bag, and kept right on giggling during her news conference.

Asked by an Italian reporter to recount what happened, Errani said, justifiably: "There's not much to tell."

Asked by another whether she'd bothered to take a shower, Errani assured him she planned to later.

"I had talked to my coach to plan what I wanted to do in the match," Errani said, "but there was no need."

All in all, it was exactly the sort of unusual happening that Day 3 kept producing in what's shaping up as a wet and wild week at the All England Club. Another: Prince Charles visited his nation's most famous tennis club, something he hadn't done in 42 years.

Four of the top 13 seeded women were sent packing Wednesday, including 2011 U.S. Open champion Sam Stosur, 2011 French Open champion Li Na, and former No. 1-ranked Caroline Wozniacki.

The fifth-seeded Stosur's 6-2, 0-6, 6-4 loss to 72nd-ranked Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands means Australia will have zero men or women in the third round for the first time since 1939.

"It's a pretty woeful performance by all of us," said Stosur, the last of nine Australians in the tournament.

Wozniacki, who hadn't departed any Grand Slam tournament in the first round in more than five years, blew two match points in the second set and was beaten 5-7, 7-6 (4), 6-4 by 37th-ranked Tamira Paszek of Austria. It was the first match of the fortnight played with the Centre Court's retractable roof closed.

"I had over two years where I was winning these matches," said No. 7 Wozniacki, who is dating 2011 U.S. Open golf champion Rory McIlroy and is still seeking her first major title. "I feel lately it's going the other way a little bit. It's not the first match this year where I have match points and not winning. You know, it's frustrating."

No. 11 Li lost to 52nd-ranked Sorana Cirstea of Romania 6-3, 6-4 in a second-round match, and 13th-seeded Dominika Cibulkova was beaten by 31st-ranked Klara Zakopalova of Czech Republic 6-4, 6-1 in the first round.

Adding to the anything-can-happen vibe, at least for the better part of an hour: No. 1 Maria Sharapova trailed 38th-ranked Tsvetana Pironkova throughout the first set, fended off five set points, and was ahead 7-6 (3), 3-1 when their second-round match was suspended by darkness.

That was one of four singles matches halted in progress, while four others were postponed entirely, adding to the backlog created by showers.

Before the rain came, Prince Charles sat in the Royal Box at Centre Court, watching six-time champion Roger Federer stumble once and awkwardly tweak his left knee but otherwise easily reach the third round by beating 68th-ranked Fabio Fognini of Italy 6-1, 6-3, 6-2.

"I'm fine. No pain, which is good," Federer said. "It could be dangerous with the left knee. I'm happy it was only basically a bruise to the ground, and not anything in the knee itself."

Federer and Fognini offered slightly stilted bows on their way off the court. Afterward, Federer chatted with and the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall for a few minutes, discussing tennis, polo and Federer's young twin daughters.

"They do brief you beforehand," said Federer, owner of a record 16 major championships, but none in the last 2 1/2 years. "I guess you don't do anything stupid. You behave. Obviously we were asked to bow, which is obviously no problem to do."

He said the royals "thought I played great ... which was unnecessary, but of course, I do appreciate it."

His performance was hardly out of the ordinary, of course. Nor was the 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 victory turned in by top-seeded and defending champion Novak Djokovic against 20-year-old American Ryan Harrison under the roof in the day's last match. Or straight-set wins by Andy Roddick to reach the second round and Kim Clijsters to get to the third.

Djokovic's second-round match against Harrison actually was much tighter than the score implies. Each man hit eight aces. Djokovic had one more winner, 31-30, and one more unforced error, 15-14. What made the difference? Djokovic converted 3 of 3 break points, and Harrison went 0 for 6.

"I was in trouble in the second set," Djokovic acknowledged. "It could have easily gone the other way."

But there were other interesting happenings.

Heather Watson, a British player ranked 103rd, became the first woman from the tournament's host country to reach the third round since 2002 by eliminating Jamie Hampton of the United States 6-1, 6-4.

Sloane Stephens, an unseeded 19-year-old American making her main-draw debut at the All England Club, saved five set points in the opener and wound up eliminating No. 23 Petra Cetkovska of the Czech Republic 7-6 (6), 4-6, 6-3. In the third set, Stephens was behind love-30 in four consecutive service games, before coming back to win each of them.

"I do still have some lapses," she said. "They're less now than I used to have in the past. I really don't get as upset when I lose points now. I'm not that emotional anymore."

No. 21-seeded Milos Raonic of Canada needed only slightly longer than Errani to finish off his rain-interrupted victory, coming back after a night's sleep to take the one game he was missing for a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 defeat of Santiago Giraldo of Colombia. Raonic is scheduled to face Sam Querrey of the United States in the second round Thursday.

Errani is supposed to back out there Thursday, too, facing Anne Keothavong of Britain.

Seems safe to say Errani will need to put in a little more time and effort on court ? weather permitting, of course.
