Amazing Alex (for Android)

Rovio, the maker of app "drug" Angry Birds, has actually managed to follow up with an even better game, Amazing Alex (Free or $0.99 for premium). Even though Rovio acquired the game from an indie developer, it's been given the addictive Rovio treatment: lots of short, fast, physics-based challenges that make it difficult to put down. Apple iOS users are already sucked in. According to Apple, Amazing Alex became the number one paid iPhone app in the U.S. on its first day.

But while testing this on Android, I felt the gravitational force too. There's no flinging or violence against animals in this game. In the terribly-named Amazing Alex, you rearrange toys and household items to create a Rube Goldberg machine. As an item drops on your design, it sets off a chain reaction that sends existing objects richoceting off each other; your goal is to collect the three stars located in every challenge board by hitting them with these objects. For $0.99, you get loads of game time and a good mix-up of challenges to keep your noodle flexed.

Fortunately for most of the world's smartphone users, Rovio launched iOS and Android versions of the app at the same time. Sorry, nothing for the less than two percent of you out there using Windows Phone. I tested Amazing Alex on a Galaxy Nexus with Android 4.0, but with all the objects on screen it'd be more fun playing this on a larger screen.

Dull Storyline But Fun Gameplay
It doesn't really detract from gameplay but I wasn't excited about the storyline or simplistic graphics. Amazing Alex puts you in the role of a generic-looking kid named Alex, a "whiz kid with a boundless imagination and a houseful of fun toys" which is far less creative (and controversial) than the violent birds in Angry Birds.

Every new challenge board presents you with a few items: three point-amassing stars, random objects to build your Rube Goldberg device, and a trigger object?like a balloon or magic eight ball?that starts off the chain reaction. Drag objects around your screen to rearrange re-orient them. When you hit the "play" button, the trigger object starts your Domino effect. Unlike in Angry Birds, you can take as many turns as you need to pass each challenge board. It'd be more fun to limit this, however.

What keeps this game interesting is that every level presents different objects with different levels of kinetic energy. ?Furthermore, a dollar buys you more than 100 challenge boards, spread across four levels?classroom, backyard, bedroom, and tree house. But even after you've completed them all, you're not done yet.

After you pass the classroom level (containing 16 challenges), the app unlocks a fifth level, My Levels, where you can create your own challenge boards and share them with the Amazing Alex community.

Once you've created a level, which can take anywhere from 30 seconds to hours depending on how difficult you make it, you can share a download URL for other Amazing Alex players.

Angry Birds was like a comfort-food app and something I could play on a train without straining my eyes. Amazing Alex, not so much. But if your Angry Birds addiction is wearing off, Amazing Alex is a fun, much more challenging alternative.

Bed Bugs - Getting Rid of Bed Bugs

Bed bugs move easily with communities due to extensive travel by people and a well-established antique furniture market. They also travel with ease between homes in highly populated areas, particularly in cities. Bed bugs are usually around 5mm in length with brown oval-shaped bodies. Bed bug eradication requires a thorough treatment regime to ensure their complete removal.

Symptoms of bed bugs include red/brown marks on the mattress after feeding on their human host as well as a distinctive sweet smell. Bedbugs and their eggs and deposits may be found in any nooks and crannies within a room, particularly within cavities in walls and furniture, along skirting boards and behind light switches.

Bed bugs feed on the blood of humans and the bite is the result of a feeding session, usually at night when the people are asleep and therefore unaware, and while sections of skin may be uncovered whilst in bed. The neck and arms and legs are at risk of bed bug bites when sleeping in a bedroom that is infested. It is essential that a bed bug infestation is dealt with comprehensively.

1) Thoroughly clean and vacuum the room where the bed bug infestation has been found, paying close attention to skirting boards, crevices and cracks using the thinnest nozzle of the vacuum cleaner. Vacuum carpets and behind pictures and radiators etc.. All the furniture must be cleaned and vacuumed. Remove all the bedding from the room such as sheets, blankets, duvet covers and mattress protectors and wash in very hot water to kill any bed bugs and their eggs. Children's toys and similar personal effects should also be thoroughly cleaned. Ensure you empty the vacuum cleaner well away from the home.

2) Use a fumer or fogger to release a pesticide smoke in to the room as a complete killer treatment. Foggers are a critical method for getting rid of bed bugs as they penetrate all areas of a room where bed bugs may reside. Ensure all windows are completely closed and storage units are open before you begin the treatment to allow the smoke to thoroughly penetrate. Leave the room for at least two hours and preferably overnight or through the day. After treatment, ventilate the room by opening windows and doors. If dead bed bugs are evident, vacuum again.

3) Use a pesticide spray with non-staining properties to treat all surfaces to prevent bed bugs returning, including all hard and soft furnishings such as the mattress. Natural alternatives are available. If you have any respiratory problems consider using a mask. Allow the spray to dry before using furniture again.

4) To prevent bed bugs returning, a dusting powder should be applied to entry points in the room, for example around windows and where radiator pipes meet the floorboards. The residual effect of the powder will deter bed bugs from returning, killing them on contact.

Bed bugs can be persistent, and several treatments may be necessary to ensure complete eradication. Bed bugs may move to another room in your home adjacent to the one being treated and the process above should be repeated as soon as possible in all rooms known to be infested with bed bugs.

US ?the enemy? says Dotcom judge

By Hamish Fletcher, Monday Jul 16, 2012

The judge due to hear Kim Dotcom?s extradition case has referred to the United States as ?the enemy? in a discussion about copyright law.

District Court Judge David Harvey has heard parts of the case against the Megaupload founder, who was arrested with three colleagues in January after a request from the United States. The FBI has accused Dotcom and others working at Megaupload website of the world?s biggest case of criminal copyright violation.

Judge Harvey is not due to hear the internet mogul?s extradition case until next year but made his views on copyright known during the launch of the ?Fair Deal? campaign last week.

The campaign is opposing any changes to New Zealand?s copyright laws that may form part of the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement.

The TPP trade deal is currently being negotiated?.?

Suicide bomber kills 23 at Afghan wedding

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? A suicide bomber blew himself up among guests at a wedding hall Saturday in northern Afghanistan, killing 23 people including a prominent ex-Uzbek warlord turned lawmaker who was the father of the bride.

The attack was the latest to target top figures from the country's minority groups and dealt a blow to efforts to unify ethnic factions amid growing concerns that the country could descend into civil war after foreign combat troops withdraw in 2014.

Ahmad Khan Samangani, an ethnic Uzbek who commanded forces fighting the Soviets in the 1980s and later became a member of parliament, was welcoming guests to his daughter's wedding Saturday morning when the blast ripped through the building in Aybak, the capital of Samangan province.

Three Afghan security force officials also were among those killed. About 60 other people, including government officials, were wounded in the attack, which left the wedding hall's black-and-white tile floor covered with shattered glass, blood and other debris.

Chairs adorned with pink fabric lay strewn across the site. Dead bodies were piled into the back of Afghan security force vehicles. Afghan Army helicopters ferried some of the wounded from the wedding hall, which has a facade of pillars painted a festive light green and pink.

The bride and groom survived, but never got the chance to exchange vows.

An eyewitness described a gruesome scene after the explosion.

"I came out and saw 40 to 50 people everywhere on the ground ? wounded and killed," said Salahuddin, who uses one name which is common in Afghanistan. "I could not exactly count the number of people killed. I could see people with missing legs and body parts all around me."

It was the latest in a string of deadly attacks around the country that threaten to undermine international hopes of an orderly handover to Afghan forces by the end of 2014. In one of the worst, Taliban fighters attacked a lakeside hotel north of Kabul on June 22, killing 18 people. Two days earlier, a suicide bomber killed 21 people, including three U.S. soldiers, in the eastern city of Khost.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for Saturday's attack.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid told the Associated Press in a phone call that the Taliban neither confirmed nor denied responsibility for the attack. In announcing their spring offensive on May 2, the Taliban said they would continue to target those who back the Karzai government and the U.S.-led international military coalition.

Jan Kubis, the United Nation's top official in Afghanistan, said the U.N. had documented an increase in the number of government and elected officials who have been targeted by militants in the past six months. He did not provide statistics, but two government officials were assassinated on Friday ? the Afghan Ministry of Women's Affairs director in Laghman province and the mayor of Shindand district in Herat province.

"Such inhumane brutality that is against the teachings of Islam and against international law should stop immediately," Kubis said in a statement.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai condemned the bombing, saying it was "carried out by the enemies of Afghanistan." He ordered a team from Kabul to fly to the area to investigate.

Karzai needs minority groups ? loosely known as the Northern Alliance ? to back his efforts to reconcile with the Taliban who are mostly from the majority Pashtun ethnic group. While Pashtuns make up 42 percent of the population, collectively the minority Tajiks, Hazaras, Uzbeks and other smaller groups outnumber them. Without minority support, the country risks a de facto partition into a Pashtun south and a "minority" north.

Minorities aren't against finding a political resolution to the decade-long war, but worry that Karzai, a Pashtun, will make too many concessions to the Taliban to achieve a peace deal.

Many commanders from the minority groups fought the Taliban after they seized Kabul in 1996 and joined with the U.S. to oust the hardline Islamic movement from power in the 2001 U.S.-led invasion. Whatever support for peace talks that Karzai has won from minority groups is likely to erode if militants continue to pick off their leaders one by one.

The death of Samangani was the latest of a handful of Northern Alliance and other minority leaders assassinated in the past two years.

One of the most prominent was Gen. Daud Daud, an ethnic Tajik, who oversaw police activities in nine northern provinces and was killed by a Taliban suicide bomber in May 2011. Daud had also served as governor of Takhar province in the north, deputy interior minister for counternarcotics and was a former bodyguard of Ahmad Shah Massoud, the charismatic Northern Alliance commander who was killed in an al-Qaida suicide bombing two days before the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

Makhdum Muhibullah Furqani, a lawmaker from Samangan, said the attack was likely organized by the Taliban or by the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan. The IMU, which was formed in 1991, originally aimed to set up an Islamic state in Uzbekistan, which borders Afghanistan. It later expanded its goal to seeking an Islamic state across Central Asia.

"For sure, it's the act of the Taliban or IMU," he said. "This was a suicide bomber who killed all these people. It was not an ambush or an IED (improvised explosive device) attack which would say this is a private dispute."

Mohammad Nawab Sherzai, criminal investigations director in Aybak who was helping provide security for the wedding, said most of the local guests had already gathered on the upper floors of the three-story wedding hall when the bomber struck. Samangani and other relatives and elders had moved to the first floor to welcome additional guests arriving from Mazar-i-Sharif, the capital of neighboring Balkh province.

"Suddenly, the attacker, who was among the guests from Mazar-i-Sharif, got very close to Samangani. He detonated his suicide vest," Sherzai said. "It was a big explosion. There were bloody bodies all around the first floor. The explosion was so strong. There were people even on the third floor who were wounded."

"There was dark smoke all around. After about 10 minutes, the people were able to see the bodies and start helping with the wounded," he said.

Samangani became famous during Afghanistan's fight against the Soviets, who left the country in 1989 after a 10-year occupation. He became a member of parliament last year and was considered a key leader in Samangan and northern Afghanistan. He was a former military commander under Northern Alliance general Abdul Rashid Dostum, a powerful Uzbek warlord.

The three Afghan security force officials killed were Afghan National Police Gen. Sayed Ahmad Sameh, the commander for the western region and a relative of Samangani; Gen. Mohammad Khan, the intelligence chief in the province; and Mohammadullah, an Afghan National Army division commander who also uses only one name.

Also on Saturday, two NATO service members were killed in the east ? one in an insurgent attack and the other as a result of a non-battle related injury. The U.S.-led coalition did not disclose any other details. So far this year, 235 NATO service members have died in Afghanistan.

Electric sports car: Toyota takes on Tesla

Most automakers are being cautious with their initial electric offerings, but customers are begging for something more exciting. Toyota is rising to the challenge with plans for an electric sports car to rival electric automaker Tesla.

By Antony Ingram,?Guest blogger / July 14, 2012

This Feb. 19, 2012 file photo shows a line of 2012 Prius sedans at a Toyota dealership in the south Denver suburb of Littleton, Colo. Toyota is developing an electric sports car, according to reports.

While electric-only automaker Tesla pushes ahead with its Model S sedan, the upcoming Model X crossover and others on the horizon, other electric automakers are taking a more cautious approach with their first forays.

The Mitsubishi i, Nissan Leaf and others are worthy additions to the market, but some customers are begging for something a little more exciting--and Toyota could be the brand to deliver it.

Autocar reports that the Japanese carmaker is planning an electric sports car, following the launch of an electric city car.

Both vehicles would take lessons learned from Toyota's beautiful 2000GT EV conversion that wowed crowds at the recent Goodwood Fesitval of Speed.

Toyota is running an electric example of the exceedingly rare 1960s sports car, which actually uses a manual gearbox--a little like the Morgan Plus E concept car shown at this year's Geneva Motor Show.

Toyota's Hiroyuki Ogawa told Autocar, Toyota has "...a desire to use a manual gearbox in our electric and hybrid sports cars". He describes the current CVT from Toyota's hybrids as "efficient but not fun", and suggests a manual transmission gives a better feel for the driver.

A manual gearbox is also likely to find its way into a hybrid sports car in the next three years, according to Ogawa.

Will Toyota's electric sports car plans encourage Nissan to follow suit with its ESFLOW concept? We certainly hope so.
