AT&T Will Finally Introduce Shared Data Plans ... - Business Insider

AT&T will roll out new shared data plans for customers with multiple mobile devices starting in late August.

New and existing AT&T customers will have the option to sign up for a certain amount of data, which can then be split across up to 10 mobile devices, including smartphones, tablets and laptops. This way, you don't have to sign up for separate data plans for each device.

This announcement comes almost exactly a month after Verizon introduced its own shared data plan, called the Share Everything Plan. Just like Verizon, AT&T's new data option will come with unlimited text and talk times.

As AT&T points out in the announcement, the more data you sign up for, the better a deal you get for your money. The goal here is clearly to encourage customers to get comfortable connecting more devices to AT&T's network.

Here's AT&T's breakdown of the shared data plan's pricing, according to a press release:

Fantasy forest pulls focus from Singapore's skyline

Catherine Brahic, environment editor

147715282.jpg(Image: Chris McGrath/Getty Images)

How do you make a garden stand out against a skyline dominated by towering glass skyscrapers? Throw fluorescent lighting, climbing plants and fashionable neon colours at the problem.

The new Bay South Garden on Singapore's waterfront, open since 29 June, features 18 of these man-made "supertrees", ranging from 25 to 50 metres tall. The resemblance to real trees is more than skin-deep. Their canopies are covered in photovoltaics, and behind the climbers that scale the artificial trunks are pipes and chimneys that evacuate the flue from a nearby biofuel reactor.

The idea, says engineer Meredith Davey of environmental design consultants Atelier Ten in London, was to take the morphology of real trees - which absorb energy and have fluid running through them - and use it to create sustainable structures.

The solar cells power the night lights and the biofuel reactors ensure that an enormous cooled conservatory, also part of the gardens, is carbon neutral. Ash from the biofuel reactor is handed over to the gardeners to use as a natural fertiliser.

"We knew the gardens had to be large, from the opening of the project, to register in the local setting dominated by 200-metre-high towers," says architect Andrew Grant of Grant Associates in Bath, UK. "We could never achieve this using transplanted trees."

Comparisons with the phosphorescent rainforests of the movie Avatar are hard to avoid. The inspiration, however, came from the Karri trees in Western Australia's Valley of Giants - and the magical forest of Japanese anime Princess Mononoke.

The hope, says Grant, was for the gardens to morph from a daytime tropical paradise into a mystical, twinkling otherwordly place. And who could resist that walkway?

Minnesota Finalizes $41 Million Contract For Online Health ...

The?state announced the two-year contract with Maximus, a?Virginia-based company, to design and maintain a state-run insurance?exchange. ?

MinnPost:? Minnesota Announces $41 Million Contract To Set Up Health Exchange
Minnesota announced a $41 million contract on Monday with the Virginia-based Maximus firm to design and maintain a state-run health insurance exchange mandated in the federal health insurance reform law.? The state is one of at least 15 to move forward with a health insurance exchange using executive branch authority, and Gov. Mark Dayton has been a strong proponent for a state-run exchange rather than the more rigid federal option (Nord, 7/16).

(St. Paul) Pioneer Press: Minnesota Signs Online Health Exchange Deal For $41 Million
The Minnesota Department of Commerce has signed a $41 million contract with a Virginia-based company to develop the state's health insurance exchange -- a key piece of the federal overhaul of the nation's health care system. Maximus Inc. will design and develop technical capabilities, including a consumer-friendly website, for the health exchange as well as Minnesota's Medicaid health insurance program, according to a Monday, July 16, news release. "We can now move forward on developing the technology backbone of the exchange, a user-friendly tool that will help more than 1.2 million Minnesotans," Mike Rothman, the state's commerce commissioner, said in the release (7/16).

Minneapolis Star Tribune: Minn. To Pay Va. Firm $41 Million To Build New Health Exchange Website Minnesota has awarded Maximus Inc. a two-year, $41 million contract to create the state's new health insurance exchange website. Reston, Va.-based Maximus is a government outsourcing company focused on health and human services agencies around the world and has more than $900 million in annual revenue. The exchange -- one local lawmaker likened it to a Travelocity for health insurance -- will be a one-stop shop on the Web for individuals and businesses to buy health insurance and enroll in Medicaid coverage. It's expected to launch in the fall of 2013 (Bjorhus, 7/16).

Minnesota Public Radio: Firm Chosen To Build Tech Side Of Minn. Insurance Exchanges
The state Commerce Department has chosen a Virginia company to build the technical part of its health insurance exchange. The state-based exchanges are a cornerstone of the federal health care law and in about a year and a half, will allow individuals and small groups to comparison shop for health insurance. Commerce awarded the $41 million contract to MAXIMUS of Reston, Va., which with several subcontractors, will create the Minnesota's exchange. Maximus bills itself as the leading administrator of Medicaid services in the U.S. The subcontractors include IBM, Connecture based in Waukesha, Wis., and Florida-based EngagePoint (Stawicki, 7/16).

In?exchange news from California --

Sacramento Bee: California Health Exchange Seeks To Make Buying Insurance A Breeze
Peter V. Lee wants to make buying health insurance "as easy as buying a book on Amazon."
He heads the nascent California Health Benefit Exchange, the cornerstone of the state's effort to put in place the federal health care overhaul. Lee envisions that 15 months from now, uninsured California residents will log onto any computer to shop for health care the same way they purchase novels. The poorest residents will receive Medi-Cal. Those above the poverty line will find a menu of subsidized private options at different prices, from a "platinum" plan with higher premiums but lower deductibles down to a "bronze" selection that has lower premiums but requires the buyer to accept more risk (Yamamura, 7/17).

California Healthline: How Active Should Exchange Be In Defining Market?
A?new issue brief?from the Pacific Business Group on Health urges exchange board members to play an active role in promoting the quality and affordability of health care in California. Rather than acting as a passive online clearinghouse with a variety of plan options, PBGH urges the exchange to establish quality standards for plans and useful tools to help consumers pick the plan that is right for them. In essence, PBGH is urging the exchange, as it navigates the middle road, to lean more toward the first option as market definer and organizer. We asked stakeholders how the exchange should steer down this path (7/16).

Art show explores religious tradition and taboo - Anglican Church of ...

?

By Ruby Russell, ENInews

?

Berlin ? An exhibition showing this summer in Berlin entitled ?Journey to Jerusalem: Artistic Positions Between Religion, Tradition and Taboo? brings together the work of ten artists who deal with the place of religion in contemporary life.

Spanning photography, painting, video, and installation, the works on show at the Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien until Aug. 19 are often challenging. Stevie Hanley looks at religious taboos through obsessively intricate and often sinister ink drawings, while Nezaket Ekici?s portraits of a woman dressed in a fully-covering chador and petting a piglet are both comic and uncomfortable.

Zohar Fraiman, meanwhile, explores sexuality and the role of women in Orthodox Jewish society in paintings that are heavy with the threat of violence, but avoid the simplistic discourse of female victims and male perpetrators.

The exhibition?s curator, Stephane Bauer, says it aims to explore common themes in Judaism, Christianity and Islam, as well as create a visual dialogue between them.

?In comparison with other shows that deal with this subject, we didn?t want to make blasphemous works, or put out that people are rejecting religion, but rather to deal with the conflicting roles that religion can play,? Bauer said in an interview.

While not all the artists in the show are religious, religion has been an influence on each of their lives, and on their artistic practice. Bauer points out that it is often difficult to identify the religious background of each artist.

?In fact the gap is not as big as when you follow the news or common discourse on the conflict between Islam and Western society,? Bauer said.

Fraiman uses motifs that recall scenes from the New Testament, while Ekici?s ?Islamic Chapel? is a fragile structure built to resemble a Christian place of worship with versus from the Koran cut out of its paper walls and lit from within so that the surrounding space is brought alive with overlapping patterns of light and shadow and partly-revealed scripture.

Originating from as far afield as Turkey, Russia, the U.S., and Israel, all the artists in the show now live and work in Berlin. Bauer say that he was interested in investigating the role of religion in Germany?s capital, where the Christian faith was long suppressed under the communist regime, and which is still thought of as an ?irreligious? city.

?There is a new aspect of religion in the city,? Bauer said. ?The major discourse says there is an Islamic impulse due to immigration but that?s it. I wanted to show that there is more to it than this, and even in the arts there is a new way to approach this and maybe this way is less about being polarized between the different religions, but could go into an introspection into the role that religion plays in society today.?

The Truth About Marissa Mayer: She Has Two ... - Business Insider

There are two views of former Google VP and new Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer in the industry.

One is that she is a brand name product leader who played a crucial role in helping Google develop its most valuable business?search?and then went on to guide the development of several other popular products including Gmail, Google Maps, and Google News.

This view is the one that was all over the Internet yesterday.

For example:

This view's popularity is the reason Yahoo's board is thrilled to have landed Mayer as its CEO. The board believes it will help her recruit talent into the company. (It probably will.)

The other view, more common amongst long-time Googlers, is that Mayer is a publicity-craving, lucky early Googler, whose public persona outstripped her actual authority and power at the company, where she was once a rising star?thanks to a bullying managerial style?but had become marginalized over the past couple of years.

Yesterday we spoke at length on the phone with a former Google executive who worked with Mayer and says she and others like her have this view.

She told us twice: "This is a great day for Google, and a nail in the coffin for Yahoo."

This source described an executive who "will work harder than anyone" and "is smarter than 99 percent of the people," but "can't scale herself" and "doesn't understand managing any other way than intimidation or humiliation."

This source says that when she worked with Mayer at Google, Mayer "was just a nightmare"?someone who had her own publicist, forced underlings to sign customized NDAs, and maintained "a shadow HR staff and a shadow recruiting staff just for her team."

"No one understood why she had the power that she had, except that she will literally work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week."

"She used to make people line up outside of her office, sit on couches and sign up with office hours with her. Then everybody had to publicly sit outside her office and she would see people in five minute increments. She would make VPs at Google wait for her. It's like you've got to be kidding."

This source says that for a time, Mayer attended executive coaching lessons with Bill Campbell, but that the gossip is he refused to keep teaching her because she was unreceptive to feedback. Another source confirms a falling out between Campbell and Mayer, but doesn't know why it happened.

So which view is more accurate? Is Marissa Mayer Google's golden girl? Or a workaholic tyrant with an uncomfortable management style?

OLIVER LANG/Getty Images

Marissa Mayer has "matured" in her leadership style, says a source close to her

We found a source with a particularly interesting answer to this question.

This person worked closely with Mayer over the years at Google.

This person's answer is that Mayer is, or rather?has been, both.

This source is now a "huge fan" of Mayer's, but says "I used to not be."

"I honestly thought she was crazy [during her early years at Google]."

This person says that Mayer used to be a polarizing executive at Google because of quirks?like how she managed her underlings and fought political battles with other top executives?but that "she is really not so much any more."

"She is 37 now, and she was in her late 20s less than a decade ago. Like all people, she matured and learned. It's not fair to cast her in the mold of when she was 28 or 29. She is a different person and leader now."

Mayer has, for example, stopped asking other executives to line up outside her office for five minute meetings during office hours.

"One of her flaws at Google is that she was too tough with her colleagues in the early years, and these people have memories like elephants."

"I think there was a time that she was more insecure, but she has really matured over the years."

This source says that doesn't mean Mayer isn't still tough."She is strong-willed and has strong opinions. She is willing to say what she believes to be true, which can make her unpopular."

But, says this source, there are lots of people at Google who want to work for her. For example, there's the story of Jen Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick went on maternity leave while working for Mayer. When she came back, she had a new boss. Google had gone through a massive re-org, and Mayer had been moved to a different organization. Mayer then asked Fitzpatrick to join her new team. If Mayer was a tyrant, this would have been a great opportunity for Fitzpatrick to say no, and escape. But she didn't; she joined Mayer's staff.

"She has her flaws, but she has really grown through the years," says the source.

It seems entirely clear to us that Mayer has alienated some people who have worked with her over the years?and that these people probably have plenty of good reason to be chaffed.

But it also seems clear that much of this alienation stems from the fact that Mayer has always worked harder than any of her colleagues and her reports?and has often been smarter than both?but has not always known how to deal with this disparity in a productive way.

According to a source we trust, she has matured and learned to deal with this issue.

In this particular way, Mayer reminds us of another famous Silicon Valley executive who alienated lots of people who worked for him: Steve Jobs.

Funny enough, the anti-Mayer source we quote above also sees the parallel, though she didn't phrase it very flatteringly in an email.

"Marissa is a nightmare of a human being, but she gets things done. If being a good person were necessary to be a CEO, we wouldn't have Apple ... and lots of other CEO roles would be empty."

Before the comparisons between Mayer and Jobs go much further, of course, Mayer has to do what Jobs did with Apple: turn around a once-great company that has stumbled to a point of near irrelevancy.

If Mayer can do that?and lots of smart industry people think she can?the last thing you'll read about her is how she keeps her office hours or whose feelings she hurts in the process.

Briefed on details and quotes from this story, Mayer and Yahoo declined to comment.

How To get Employees To Deliver Good Customer Service ...

Have you ever wondered what makes an employee deliver good customer service?? This is a question all companies should be asking. Well, for one, I recommend incentive programs for good behavior. Why, because everyone wants to know ?what is in it for them?? the answer of their job is no longer a motivating factor. So you have to creatively up the stakes and let them know what is in it for them.

Before telling what is in it for them, clearly give good training of what your company consider good customer service and make it very clear. I recommend placing it in the employee manual. Then state what they will acquire for such great service like:

1. quarterly commissions on sales

2. trips of value (long weekend getaways)

3. movies tickets

4. theatre tickets

5. sports tickets (football/baseball etc)

6. cash rewards

7. dinner for two at a good restaurant

8. concert tickets

9. gift certificates

10. paid vacation (by the day or week so they can accumulate) etc.

How to measure their efforts are in phone customer service to screen the calls that most companies usually taped, really listen in and reward accordingly. Have the customer fill out satisfaction forms, trust me if they are not happy with service they will gladly fill them out. Just make sure they are easily accessible with out the aid of an employee. This may mean you will have to run a small campaign to let customers know you care to hear from them and you really want their feedback. It would not hurt to reward them for a truly helpful suggestion either or simply write them a responsive letter to the action taken. The other thing you can do is make the employees responsible for selecting the ?employee of the month? person and give just one reward away per month. Again the trick is to make it worth there while but not put you out of business. Also posting their picture and name for all to see give egos a boost too. And to keep it a constant race to please the customer, who ever gets the most nominees at the end of the year gets a higher raise than normally given or a extra week of vacation paid the following year etc.

But know if you simply treat your employees well and make them love their job and the company, they will give good customer service. Good customer service is an extension of how the employees feel about their job and the company. So if this is a big problem you may want to ask the employees what they would like to see changed in the company concerning them. See what you can do to implement the changes and moral will rise and so won?t the quality of service to the customers. It can be simple things like the color of the dressing room or the office, lighting, smell of a room, the type of chairs they sit in, the work space they have, the condition of the bathroom, use of a water cooler and hot water for free coffee/tea etc. Should you need to find out what they are thinking yes hold a meeting, but make it a free rewarding lunch and discuss the changes needed. And, if that does not work, it might just be a simply, ?thanks for working today I really appreciate your effort? that makes the whole difference. Just remember to answer what is in it for them and you will gain good customer service from your employees.
