Battery life gets boost with Pepto-Bismol ingredient

4 hrs.

A battery technology that was all the rage in the era of disco is getting a fresh look thanks to a dose of the same stuff in a bottle of Pepto-Bismol.

Interest in rechargeable iron-air batteries peaked during the 1970s energy crisis. But the batteries never took off due to their low efficiency and short life spans.

Sri Narayan, a chemist at the University of Southern California, appears to have hit on a formula that makes the batteries 10 times more efficient, a key step for their viability in the 21st century.

"Iron is cheap and air is free," he said in a news release. "It?s the future."

Iron-air batteries use chemical energy generated by the oxidation of iron plates that are exposed to oxygen in the air. This is a process similar to rusting.

The problem was a competing chemical reaction of hydrogen inside the battery that sucked away about 50 percent of the battery?s energy, making it too inefficient for practical applications.

Narayan and colleagues added a bit of bismuth sulfide, part of the active ingredient in Pepto-Bismol, to the battery?s electrode. This shut down the wasteful hydrogen generation, reducing energy loss to just 4 percent.

The loss of hydrogen generation also improved discharge rates.

The improvements advance the prospect of iron-air batteries becoming "a sustainable large-scale energy storage solution,"?Narayan and colleagues write in the Journal of the Electrochemical Society.?

Ultimately, these batteries could store wind and solar energy for use when the air is still and the sun is hiding behind clouds or the other side of the planet.

That, in turn, could allow utilities to bring more wind and solar power online, reducing dependence of other forms of energy such as coal and natural gas.

The research was funded by the Advanced Research Projects Agency, an arm of the Department of Energy. More details are available here.?

Apple seeks severe punishment for Samsung lawyer's actions

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Apple Inc asked a U.S. judge on Thursday to punish Samsung Electronics Co Ltd for a Samsung attorney's conduct by ordering that the South Korean company has infringed Apple's phone design patents, according to a court filing.

Trial began this week in high stakes litigation between the two companies. Apple sued Samsung last year in San Jose, California federal court, accusing Samsung of copying the iPhone and iPad. Samsung has countersued.

U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh on Tuesday had barred Samsung's attorneys from presenting some evidence during opening statements. Later that afternoon, Samsung emailed reporters links to that material, along with a statement that "fundamental fairness requires that the jury decide the case based on all the evidence."

Samsung attorney John Quinn, of the law firm Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, acknowledged in a court filing on Wednesday that he authorized the press statement but said it was not designed to influence the jury.

"The members of the jury had already been selected at the time of the statement and the transmission of these public exhibits, and had been specifically instructed not to read any form of media relating to this case," Quinn wrote.

Apple called his conduct "egregious, because it impugned the integrity of the court," according to its legal brief on Thursday.

Samsung spokesman Adam Yates said the company will be submitting a response. "Apple's filing is baseless," Yates said.

A typical sanction for attorney misbehavior is a monetary fine, but Apple is asking Koh to rule that Apple's phone design patents in the case are valid, and that Samsung has infringed them. Those are issues that the jury has been empanelled to decide.

The trial is set to resume on Friday.

The case in U.S. District Court, Northern District of California, is Apple Inc v. Samsung Electronics Co Ltd et al, No. 11-1846.

IDC: Apple?s iPad Grew Q2 Tablet Share To 68% As It Braces For Windows 8, Amazon And Nexus Competition

new-ipad-black-640x480-jpeg-1After Amazon launched its $199 Kindle Fire tablet last autumn, a lot of observers thought it could prove to be the competition to Apple's iPad that other Android tablets had so far failed to deliver. Some numbers out from IDC today, however, show that as Amazon continues to sell the device in the U.S. alone, that has failed to become the case, as Apple continues to increase its worldwide market share against competitors. Quarterly tablet shipments worldwide (defined by IDC as devices sent through to distribution channels ?like operators, retailers or end users)?totaled 25 million, with Apple, on the back of the new iPad launch in March, blowing everyone out of the water with record-breaking shipments of 17 million+ iPad tablets, working out to a 68% market share (up by nearly 7 percentage points on last year). Ironically, as competition continues to increase, IDC thinks that might only strengthen Apple's position, with "baffled" consumers faced with "too many options" opting instead for the market leader.

Teens and Drugs | CT Natural Health - Connecticut Holistic Health ...

Posted by melissabochet on August 2, 2012 ? Leave a Comment?

Teen drug use is an ages old concern, and as a parent it?s one of my biggest fears. The landscape of our children?s world has changed and it?s a challenge to understand the present drug problems, let alone find a solution. There is a plethora of designer drugs replete with chemical toxins, as well as a profusion of prescribed medications that can make their way into our children?s lives. These come along with a changing economic climate, an increasingly stressful world, and a less healthy society. We have to know 2 things: If our children are at risk of using or are using drugs, and how we can help them.

The most prevalent drugs are marijuana, prescription drugs and alcohol. If your children have told you they aren?t using drugs, but you?re still concerned they may be doing so, there are warning signs to look for. The following is intended only as a guide, as many of these signs may be the result of other physiological changes related to your children?s development through their teenage years. If your children are too young to consider drug use remember that if you keep them optimally healthy, you will help them avoid drugs in the future. It is my professional opinion that health conditions in childhood can lead to self-medication in later years.

Regardless of age, make a point of observing your children, and make note of how often these warning signs occur. If a number of them occur at the same time, it might indicate your child is on drugs. Here is a partial list:

A drop in school grades

Changes in eating patterns

A reduction in organized extracurricular activities (such as an unexplained dropping-out of sport or other activities or interests)

Bloodshot or glassy eyes

Agitation, anxiety, jitteriness

An unexplained change of friends

Tiredness, laziness and loss of motivation

Sleeping problems, including not sleeping

Unusual or irregular behavior

Aggressive behavior

Unexplained mood swings

A reduction in or minimal interaction with the family

You notice that valuable items or money are missing

Kids might get involved with drugs because of peer pressure, and/or for emotional reasons, which are often caused by a chemical imbalance or hormone imbalance, such as depression, anxiety, or a physical health problem they think can only be helped with drugs. It?s important to know about each of these in order to understand how best to help our children and to realize that natural solutions exist for these conditions.

The most prevalent reason kids start experimenting with drugs is peer pressure. Teach your children how to say no to pressure so they don?t feel they have to say yes. For example: ?Are you crazy? We could go to jail. What would happen if our parents found out??

The second reason children try drugs relates to the anxiety of growing up which can include poor self-esteem, rejection by peers, or a traumatic event. One solution is to help your child find something s/he can do well at, such as sports, dance classes, yoga, exercise, working out, etc. If you need to participate, don?t resist. It will help you feel better, too, and will create a bond between you and your child. Children often take cues from those closest to them and you would always like that to be you.

Prescription drugs also can lead to drug dependence. In fact, prescription drug overdose as a cause of death has recently become more prevalent than illegal drug overdose.

If, as often as possible, you use natural solutions to resolve your family?s health problems, you will help your child avoid prescription drug abuse. Keep in mind that numerous studies have revealed that children often get their drugs from their parents? medicine cabinet, and they also can get prescription drugs from friends. Prescription drugs are the most lethal type of drugs. Even though it may at times be necessary for us to use prescription drugs, it sets an example that children follow. The overuse of medication is clearly on the rise: According to IMS Health, a healthcare information company, doctors issued 124 million prescriptions for the generic version of the painkiller Vicodin in 2008 compared to 97 million in 2004, and prescriptions for the generic version of OxyContin have doubled, increasing from 14 million to 28 million during that same time period.

According to an article published in the St. Petersburg Times, pain killers and antidepressants kill more people than cocaine and heroin combined. The article stated that ?prescription drug overdoses are likely to overtake car crashes as the leading cause of accidental death here?? Dr. Leslie Walker, chief of adolescent medicine at Seattle Children?s Hospital, says that prescription painkillers have become more widely available than ever before. Studies conducted by the Partnership for a Drug-Free America found that 40 percent of American adults believe it is safe to take prescription drugs without a prescription, with an attitude of, ?Why else would doctors prescribe them??

?The easy availability of addictive opioids, depressants and stimulants on the net has, for many children, made the Internet a greater threat than the illegal street drug dealer,? says Joseph A. Califano Jr., Chairman and Founder of the Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University (CASA). You don?t need to actively surf the Web to find these sites. Many of them solicit using spam e-mails that invite the consumer to buy prescription drugs without a prescription. If you haven?t gotten these e-mails, a Google search for ?opiates but no prescription? produces more than a million hits for sites, many of them offshore, offering controlled substances delivered to your door in a plain wrapper. All you need is a credit card.

Next let?s look at stress and various chemical imbalances which may lead to drug use. Because stress is a major factor in disease and can directly affect a person?s moods, we need to understand more about it. Children as well as adults often turn to drugs to lift their moods when there are more effective, less dangerous, natural solutions. To get some idea of how stress can affect your moods and health, consider that the stress glands of the body (called the adrenal glands) secrete 50 different hormones. For example, the adrenal hormone cortisol controls your blood sugar by breaking down fat so you don?t experience fatigue or low blood sugar. When this hormone is out of balance you can experience mood swings, depression and have problems with weight. Another adrenal gland hormone, called noradrenaline, is secreted when you are under stress. This hormone takes blood from the digestive tract and puts the blood into your arms and legs. This can cause digestive problems. Furthermore, the adrenal hormone DHEA controls your estrogen reserves. When this hormone is out of balance it can lead to sleep problems, PMS and menopausal symptoms, etc. At Sophia Natural Health Center, we test for adrenal function to insure that your child?s adrenal glands are functioning properly. Most Natural Medicine Specialists should be able to do this.

There is another tool you can use to fight the drug culture we live in besides trying to lead a drug-free life yourself. This other tool is knowledge, which will fill the void about the dangers of such drugs as marijuana, prescription drugs and alcohol. Free booklets are available at the National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information (ncadi.samhsa.gov/) and National Institute on Drug Abuse (nida.nih.gov/) websites.

If your child or any member of your family is abusing drugs and you need outside help, here is an organization that can help with rehabilitation and prevention: Narconon International www.narconon.org at 1-877-362-9682. This is the only drug rehabilitation program with a 75 percent success rate.

As a Wellness Professional, I believe there are three major causes of health problems:

  • Stress and related hormonal imbalances
  • Bio-chemical imbalances due to the 82,000 chemicals which we can come into contact with each week through our water, food, and air
  • Undetected physical damage, which can occur from past traumas leading to pain, headaches, and numerous other symptoms.

We believe everyone, children and adults, should be evaluated to find out how these three causes could be impacting their health. Not only can these conditions lead to drug abuse or addictive behavior, they are important to one?s overall health. By keeping ourselves and our children healthy we are drug-proofing them in many ways. By staying healthy and keeping a healthy household, we can protect our children from the impacts of drugs.

8 free benefits now covered on women's health insurance plans ...

(CNN) ? Beginning Wednesday, all new health insurance plans will be required to provide eight preventive health benefits to women for free.

The benefits include contraceptives, breast-feeding supplies and screenings for gestational diabetes, sexually transmitted infections and domestic violence, as well as routine check-ups for breast and pelvic exams, Pap tests and prenatal care.

The services are a requirement of the health care reform law Congress passed in 2010. A new report released Monday by the Department of Health and Human Services estimates 47 million women are in health plans that must offer the new benefits.

10 lesser known effects of the health care law

?Women will be able to have access to essential preventive services that will provide early detection and screening for those situations where they?re most at risk, and also provide opportunities to care and services that they need as wives and mothers,? Sen. Barbara Mikulski, D-Maryland, said at a press conference Monday.

An additional 14 free preventative service benefits for women have already taken effect as a requirement of health care reform, including mammograms to screen for breast cancer in women over 40 and screenings for osteoporosis in women over age 60.

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius trumpeted the need for the reforms.

?Before the health care law, many insurers didn?t even cover basic women?s health care. Other care plans charged such high copayments that they discouraged many women from getting basic preventive services. So as a result, surveys show that more than half of the women in this country delayed or avoided preventive care because of its cost,? Sebelius said Monday. ?That?s simply not right.?

Not all insured women will have access to the new services. Certain insurance plans that existed prior to the passage of health care reform may have ?grandfathered? status and may be exempt from offering the benefits.

?You may or may not have them offered to you, and if they?re offered, you may have to pay cost sharing. In other words, you may have to pay a portion of the costs,? said Gary Claxton, a vice president on health policy at the Kaiser Family Foundation.

It?s not immediately clear how many women are in such plans. A 2011 survey by the Kaiser Family Foundation found 56% of covered workers are in ?grandfathered? plans. Experts anticipate the number of those plans will shrink as significant changes are made to them, resulting in a loss of ?grandfathered? status.

Women can call their employers to ask whether they are in ?grandfathered? health insurance plans, Claxton said.

Adidas steps up 2012 forecast

German sportswear giant Adidas posted a better-than-expected second-quarter net profit Thursday and stepped up its full-year forecast thanks to earnings from Euro 2012 and the Olympic Games.

The group said net profit in 2012 was now projected to grow by 15 to 17 percent to reach between 770 and 785 million euros ($943-962 million), from its previously forecast 12 to 17 percent.

"Management continues to forecast Adidas group sales to increase at a rate approaching 10 percent on a currency-neutral basis in 2012," it added in a written statement.

Despite the uncertainty in the global economic outlook and consumer spending, the group said its sales would be helped by its "high exposure to fast-growing emerging markets as well as the further expansion of retail".

"In addition, this year's major sporting events will provide positive stimulus to group sales," it added, highlighting the football Euro championships in June and July and the London Olympics, currently underway.

Adidas said its net profit grew 18 percent to 165 million euros in the period of April to June, beating forecasts by analysts polled by Dow Jones Newswires who had pencilled in a 13-percent increase.

Revenues increased by 15 percent to 3.5 billion euros in the second quarter of 2012, it added.

BVRLA launches new guide to vehicle funding ? Automotive ...

THE British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association has published its new ?Guide to Vehicle Funding?.

?

Produced in association with Peugeot and Deloitte, the business advisory firm, the digital publication has been produced to help business decision-makers choose the most appropriate way of financing their vehicles.

?

Incorporating all the tax changes made in this year?s Budget, the guide helps readers compare the key features and accounting treatments of different funding methods including contract hire, finance lease, contract purchase, hire or lease purchase and outright purchase.

?

?Credit is not as easy to find as it used to be, but locating independent information about different funding methods is almost as great a challenge,? said BVRLA chief executive, John Lewis.

?

?With companies focusing so hard now on the whole life cost and tax-efficiency of their fleets, it is more important than ever to choose the right type of vehicle finance.?

?

Dan Rees, senior manager in Deloitte Car Consulting, added: ?Vehicle funding is an essential fleet decision. Various changes to tax rules have meant that there can be a big difference between the least and most expensive options, which is accentuated by the financial position of the acquiring company and the type of vehicle.

?

?We recommend checking the financial comparison between buying or leasing a fleet car, particularly if this hasn?t been reviewed for some years. It is also important to ensure that the right cars are being acquired. Some vehicles have a better after-tax whole life cost than others, so it is always worth looking beyond the price to the total financial impact on the business taking into account hidden tax costs. This publication will provide help and guidance to industry professionals.?

?

The guide can be accessed on the BVRLA website at: www.bvrla.co.uk/Article/Detail.

Why Write Product Reviews To Make Money?

Write product reviewsManufactured products are being used everywhere. Everyone makes use of at least a few products every day, from clothing items to electronic gadgets to consumer electronics such as microwave ovens and LCD TVs etc. Products also include digital gadgets, software, games, utilities, websites, services, and so on. All of these products are being used by consumers worldwide. What makes users stick to one brand or manufacturer through the years is their quality. And while manufacturers are constantly trying to improve their quality, they also want more and more people to know about their products. This is where product reviews come in. Product reviews help companies publicize their products, and expand their reach. For this purpose, some companies pay people to write products reviews. Let?s look at how you can write product reviews and earn money.

Why write product reviews?

Word of mouth is the most powerful form of advertising. People will go for a product if enough people are recommending. And if someone they trust recommends it to them, then it?s most likely a yes. This is why companies are paying people to recommend their products to others.

Another reason companies are turning towards product reviews is, people no longer trust?advertisements, due to the spammy nature of some. Product reviews are a surer way of getting more customers. But whatever the reasons, it?s a good source of income online. You can exclusively start writing product reviews, and earn a living out of it!

How does it work?

You can find two basic types of product reviews. First, there are some revenue sharing websites that ask you to write a product review for them. Those reviews are published on their websites only. They are articles, which get search engine traffic much like blog posts. The revenue these sites generate from your reviews, you are given a share from it. There are pay-per-review websites as well. These pay you a fixed amount for each review you write. These reviews will either be published on the host site, or they will allow you to publish it on your own site if it has good traffic.

To earn money by writing reviews, you can either join some review websites, or you can create a website of your own, and write some reviews on it.

Top 5 review websites to join

1. Shvoong

Shvoong accepts for almost any category of products, such as gadgets, toys, travel destinations, movies, books, health products, and so on. It is a revenue sharing website where you pay them a part of what you earn through your review.

2. ReviewStream

This is another great website. Like Shvoong, it will accept reviews on almost any product. But it is a pay-per-review website, which means it will pay you initially for a review. This amount could be as low as 50 cents, or as high as $10 or more.

3. Ciao

Ciao is sort of an amalgam of Shvoong and ReviewStream. Initially, it pays you a small amount (around 25 cents) for a review, but you can also earns through other means such as when someone views your review, or rates it as helpful. You earn some cents for every such action.

4. SharedReview

Social networking-cum-review publishing. A great place to find reviews for products, and of course, to write some.

5. ePinions

Revenue sharing website. Works just like Shvoong and Ciao.

Review on your own website

Besides writing reviews on other websites, you can also write some on your own website. If you don?t have your own website or a blog, you should create one now. For this method, you will need to write different sort of reviews. While the review websites let you review products from various brands and companies, here, you will have to choose a particular company, and stick to it for the review. There are some web apps and services that pay you to write reviews for them once you sign up with them.

Most companies nowadays have affiliate programs of some sort. You can also participate in the affiliate program, and promote the product using your affiliate ads. That way, although the company doesn?t require you to write a review, you can still convince people to purchase the product through you, hence earning you some money. This is in fact a great affiliate marketing strategy. Some affiliate programs even require you to write a review for the product. In any case, you have to do your homework if you want to make any sales.

?Writing reviews isn?t difficult. Often times, the companies will tell you what they expect from the reviews, and what you should mention. All the information will be given to you. You just need to shape that information into professional words, and you?ll be earning money in no time at all! )
