Strasburg rebounds to shut down Marlins

WASHINGTON (AP) - Stephen Strasburg wouldn't admit his poorest outing this season gave him added motivation. His teammates saw something extra in his dominating performance Sunday.

Strasburg pitched three-hit ball over six shutout innings and drove in two runs to lead the Washington Nationals over the Miami Marlins 4-1.

"He came out a little angry," Washington's Jayson Werth said. "I think he acted like he had something to prove today, and he pitched really good. I like that Stras."

Strasburg (12-5) struck out six and walked one, extending his scoreless streak against the Marlins to 27 innings and lowering his ERA to 2.97 in 127 1-3 innings.

"He's a way better pitcher. Before he was a thrower," Miami manager Ozzie Guillen said. "He's matured. He's better."

In his previous start, Tuesday against Philadelphia, Strasburg tied his career high by giving up six runs. Strasburg has allowed four runs or more four times this season and in his next starts has gone 4-0 and allowed just two earned runs.

"I'm still learning how to pitch and call a game and really pick up on little things that happen in the game that you can use to your advantage," Strasburg said. "Today was a big step forward for me in that process, but there's still a long way to go."

The right-hander is pitching his first full major league season following reconstructive elbow surgery in 2010. Washington officials say they plan to end his season early, and he is thought to have a limit of about 160 innings, although the Nationals have not been specific.

Strasburg's strong day extended from the mound to the plate. In the second inning he came up with runners on second and third and one out, and hit a two-run single to right field. He's batting .343 (12 for 35) with seven RBIs.

"Someone said, `When we shut him down, can we keep his bat? Can we use him as a pinch hitter?"' Nationals manager Davey Johnson said with a smile. "Highly unlikely."

Strasburg gave up a double to Scott Cousins in the first inning, then retired his next nine batters. He never allowed more than one runner in an inning.

"He was great. That was back to the old Stras," Adam LaRoche said. "There was something about when he came to the dugout before the game. We could all sense a different attitude today. I don't know if it was something to prove to himself, that he still had it or to be able bounce back from the last one - whatever it was, he had a little fire in his belly."

LaRoche was 2 for 3 with his own two-run single in the second inning as the Nationals won three of four from Miami and maintained a three-game lead over second-place Atlanta in the NL East. LaRoche is hitting .442 with seven homers and 16 RBIs in his last 14 games.

Drew Storen pitched a one-hit ninth for his first save since Sept. 28. It was the first save chance for Storen since he returned July 19 from right elbow surgery.

"That was a lot of fun," Storen said. "Especially when you're pitching for a first-place team in that situation, it doesn't get much better than that."

Miami's Jose Reyes hit a fourth-inning single that extended his hitting streak to 24 games, the longest in the majors this season. Reyes starts a series Tuesday at his former team, the New York Mets.

Ricky Nolasco (8-11) gave up four runs, eight hits and four walks in six innings. He is 0-5 with a 7.16 ERA in his last five starts, allowing at least four runs in each.

Miami scored in the seventh when Carlos Lee and Greg Dobbs led off with back-to-back doubles against Craig Stammen. The double gave Lee an 11-game hitting streak, the 19th time in his career he's hit safely in at least 10 straight games.

NOTES: Nationals LF Michael Morse singled in the fifth inning to extend his hitting streak to 14 games, the longest for the Nationals this season. ... After striking out swinging in the fourth inning, Harper slammed his bat on the plate, breaking it in half. Miami catcher John Buck said Harper apologized during his next at-bat. "I told him, `Don't worry about it. I did the same thing when I was your age. It was a metal bat, and I was in high school,"' Buck said. "It's a learning experience in front of the eyes of the whole country and the world. I bet you he won't do that any more - at least in the next couple of weeks." ... The Nationals start a 10-game trip Monday at Houston. Washington has the best road record (33-21) in the majors.

New Mars rover to land in intriguing giant crater

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) ? The latest Mars destination is a giant crater near the equator with an odd feature: a mountain rising from the crater floor.

How did it get there?

Gale Crater was gouged by a meteor impact more than 3 billion years ago. Over time, scientists believe sediments filled in the 96-mile-wide crater and winds sculpted the 3-mile-high mountain, called Mount Sharp.

Mount Sharp's stack of rock layers can be read like pages in a storybook with older deposits at the base and more recent material the higher up you go, providing a record of Mars history through time.

Images from space reveal signs of water in the lower layers of the mountain, including mineral signatures of clays and sulfate salts, which form in the presence of water. Life as we know it needs more than just water. It also needs nutrients and energy.

During its two-year mission, the NASA rover Curiosity will trek to the lower flanks of the mountain in search of the carbon-based building blocks of life.

The Merits And Dismerits Of The Solar Energy ? News and Society

It is truly amazing how we are able to live our lives with such an ease thanks to modern technology. Appliances such as refrigerators and freezers, the televisions, electrical heaters and air-conditioning units, the freeview, the computers and mobile phones make our lives a lot easier. However these devices all require a lot of energy. One of the biggest wishes of home owners these days is a solution for powering their homes and their appliances for a lower cost. Many wise home owners have started considering getting solar panels for this very reason.

Solar energy is one of the few, if not the only, sources of energy you can feel good about consuming. Any person can enjoy using solar energy to its fullest potential without affecting the environment in any negative way, while at the same time escaping an expensive energy bill. Below are some facts regarding solar energy pros and cons.

The sun provides our planet with free and infinite energy in the form of radiant light. With this natural energy you can power your entire household and all appliances if you have enough solar panels. Enjoy living a life at ease without worrying about any energy bills. One of the biggest advantages of using power harnessed from the sun is its close to non-existing degree of pollution. Solar panel systems do not emit any CO2 at all. In fact, it?s the most pure, clean and natural form of energy there is!

We are in no doubt gradually running out of the natural resources that this planet has stocked up for us over the past million years. At this time our society is extremely dependent upon fossil fuels in order to produce electrical power for the entire grid. As the amount of fossil fuels remaining on our planet keeps declining, the price of the fuels keeps climbing. Fossil fuels affect our planet in a very bad way by emitting an excess amount of CO2 which in return leads to global warming.

When it comes to using the solar energy, the best way to do it is by using a solar panel which consists of photovoltaic cells to convert the solar radiation into direct current electricity. Manufacturing photovoltaic cells and solar panels as well as having them installed may seem a bit pricy. If your system produces any excess electricity you will want to store this electricity in batteries. Batteries may be expensive as well and they need to be used with proper care in order to maintain their effectiveness.

Syria army pounds rebels in Aleppo

The Syrian army pounded rebel positions in second city Aleppo Sunday ahead of a threatened ground assault after boasting its capture of the last rebel-held district of the capital.

Iran appealed for help from governments with ties to the Syrian opposition in securing the release of 48 of its nationals seized from a bus in Damascus as an Arabic news channel aired footage it said was of the Iranians in the hands of rebel captors who charged that their hostages were Revolutionary Guards.

At least two rebel fighters were killed in early morning clashes in Aleppo, the scene of heavy fighting since July 20, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Troops shelled rebel-held Salaheddin district in the southwest and clashes erupted in the Sukkari, Hamdaniyeh and Ansari neighbourhoods, the Britain-based watchdog said.

The opposition Syrian National Council charged that the army's bombardment of the rebels was hitting key public institutions in the commercial capital, some of historical significance.

"After failing to subdue (rebel forces) in Aleppo... the Syrian regime's gangs have started to target government institutions and buildings," the exiled opposition group said in a statement.

"Some of them have historical and archaeological value."

Aleppo preserves a raft of historical sites, including its renowned 13th century citadel. The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation named the Ancient City a World Heritage Site in 1986, citing its "outstanding universal value."

The SNC accused the army of shelling Aleppo's television building.

"The criminal regime does not hesitate to shell these institutions," the group said, adding: "The rebels were forced to move away from the television building in order to protect the Syrian people's property and heritage."

Rebels tried to storm the state television building on Saturday before being driven back by shelling, the Observatory said.

State media said the army defended the site from "mercenary terrorist groups."

A senior government security figure warned that "the battle for Aleppo has not yet begun, and what is happening now is just the appetiser... The main course will come later."

The official said more reinforcements had arrived and that at least 20,000 troops were now on the ground. "The other side are also sending reinforcements," the official added of the rebels, who claim to have seized half the city.

The pro-government Al-Watan newspaper said on Sunday that the army had killed "hundreds of terrorists" in Aleppo but that between 6,000 and 8,000 remained in the city.

On Saturday, violence nationwide killed 205 people -- 115 civilians, 38 rebel fighters and 52 soldiers, the Observatory said.

Because of restrictions on the free movement of journalists in Syria, it is impossible to independently verify death tolls and claims of either side.

The Syrian army said on Saturday it had seized the last rebel-held district of Damascus and authorities took journalists on an escorted tour.

A brigadier general told reporters the Tadamun neighbourhood had been retaken after heavy fighting and that the military now controls all of the capital.

"We have cleansed all the districts of Damascus, from Al-Midan to Mazzeh, from Al-Hajar Al-Aswad to Qadam... to Tadamun," said the officer.

Iran appealed to Qatar and Turkey, which both have close relations with the Syrian opposition, for help in securing the release of 48 nationals it says were seized while on pilgrimage to the Sayyida Zeinab shrine in the southeastern suburbs of Damascus.

Al-Arabiya television aired footage on Sunday which it said was of the Iranians in the captivity of rebel Free Syrian Army fighters who charged that their hostages were elite Revolutionary Guards.

Fighters of the Al-Baraa Brigade of the rebel Free Syrian Army have "captured 48 of the shabiha (militiamen) of Iran who were on a reconnaissance mission in Damascus," said a man dressed as an FSA officer in the video screened by the Dubai-based channel.

"During the investigation, we found that some of them were officers in the Revolutionary Guards," he said, showing documents taken from one of the men, who appeared in the background.

Tehran, Damascus's key regional ally, has repeatedly denied it has sent any military units to Syria.

Defence Minister Ahmad Vahidi said on Saturday, before the latest abduction was made public that "Iran has no armed forces in Syria and the Syrian government has not made such a request," according to Iranian state television channel IRIB.

Iran tests upgraded version of short-range missile

(AP) ? Iran claimed Saturday it has successfully test-fired an upgraded version of a short-range ballistic missile with improved accuracy, increasing the Islamic Republic's capability to strike both land and naval targets.

Defense Minister Gen. Ahmad Vahidi said the solid-fueled Fateh-110 has a range of 300 kilometers (185 miles). He claimed the weapon could strike with pin-point precision, making it the most accurate weapon of its kind in Iran's arsenal.

"By reaching this generation of the Fateh-110, a new capability has been added to our armed forces in striking sea and land targets," state TV quoted Vahidi as saying. "Few countries in the world possess the technology to build such missiles."

Iran's military leaders have said they believe future wars will be air- and sea-based and Tehran has sought to upgrade its air defense systems and naval power in anticipation of such a possibility.

Iran has also been pushing to upgrade its missiles, which already can target Israel and U.S. bases in the Middle East. The Pentagon released a report in June noting significant advances in Iranian missile technology, acknowledging that the Islamic Republic has improved the accuracy and firing capabilities of its missiles.

The Fateh-110, or Conqueror, is a single-stage solid-propellant, surface-to-surface missile put into service in 2002. The earlier version of the domestically-produced missile had a range of 200 kilometers (120 miles). The weapon was developed by Iran's Aerospace Industries Organization.

Iran also has a variety of longer-ranged missiles including a Shahab-3 variant with a range of 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles) that can reach Israel and southern Europe. Many of its missiles could in theory carry a nuclear warhead.

Iran considers both the United States and Israel as potential adversaries. Neither country has ruled out a military strike against Iran's nuclear program, which they claim is aimed at developing nuclear weapons. Iran says its program is for peaceful purposes.

Britain's Foreign Office said in a statement that it was concerned by the reports of the missile test.

"This move calls into question again Iran's stated commitment to a purely peaceful nuclear program," the ministry said Saturday. "We remain concerned that Iran continues to develop missile technology with the clear intention of extending the range and sophistication of its missiles."

Israel is about 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) away from Iran's western borders, while the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet is based in Bahrain, some 200 kilometers (120 miles) from Iranian shores in the Persian Gulf.

Iran's military leaders have threatened that Israel "would disappear from the Earth" if it attacks Iran. Military commanders have also warned that 35 American military bases in the Middle East are within Iran's missile range and would be destroyed within seconds after any U.S. attack on Iran.

Iran launched an arms development program during its 1980-88 war with Iraq to compensate for a U.S. weapons embargo. Since 1992, Iran has produced its own tanks, armored personnel carriers, missiles, torpedoes and a fighter plane.

Jacksons say estate executors harming the family

(AP) ? Janet, Randy and Rebbie Jackson say the executors of Michael Jackson's will are causing harm by damaging "fundamental family relationships" and isolating matriarch Katherine Jackson "from anyone questioning the validity of Michael's will."

The Jackson siblings released a statement late Friday through an attorney amid a fight over their brother's will with the executors of his estate.

On Thursday a judge named TJ Jackson, a cousin to Michael Jackson's three children, as co-guardian with Katherine Jackson, who was named their sole caretaker in the disputed will.

Janet, Randy and Rebbie Jackson accuse the executors of a "relentless" negative media campaign and say they have been barred from visiting their 82-year-old mother or Jackson's children.

"The effect of that notice not only is to damage fundamental family relationships, it is also to isolate Katherine Jackson from anyone questioning the validity of Michael's will," reads the statement by Janet Jackson's attorney, Blair G. Brown, released on behalf of Janet, Randy and Rebbie Jackson.

They say they will continue to contest Michael Jackson's will because "the executors have never explained how Michael could have signed his will in California on a date that irrefutable evidence establishes that he was in New York."

Representatives for the executors of the will did not immediately respond to calls and emails requesting comment. However, representatives for executors John Branca and John McClain released a statement some weeks ago saying, "Any doubts about the validity of Michael's will and his selection of Executors were thoroughly and completely debunked two years ago when a challenge was rejected by the Los Angeles County Superior Court, the California Court of Appeals and, finally, the California Supreme Court."

Janet, Randy and Rebbie Jackson say they will continue to contest Michael Jackson's will, adding, "they stand nothing to gain financially by a finding that the will is invalid."

"The individuals who have the most to lose by a finding that the will is invalid are, of course, the executors and those on the executors' payroll."

The siblings say they will "press forward in their search for the truth in order to carry out the wishes of their brother Michael."

Which missing features do you most want Apple to add to iOS?

Which missing features do you most want Apple to add to iOS?

Shortly before WWDC 2012 and the unveiling of iOS 6, Rene wrote a monumental article on the "higher hanging fruit" that Apple could still add to the iPhone and iPad to make them more competitive. Sure, iOS isn't for geeks, but that doesn't mean Apple can't show the geeks some love! I for one wish they'd added a few of the things on his list!

Since WPCentral is asking what users want on Windows Phone, I figured I'd ask if anyone here at iMore feels like I do -- that Apple could give us more! How about you?

Even if you just look at what Android, Windows Phone, and BlackBerry have announced for this year, never mind the existing features, there's a lot Apple could do to add some sizzle to iOS and make those who've chosen non-Apple devices a little more envious of iPhone and iPad owners.

So I'm asking -- if you could have any feature or features added to iOS, what would they be? A new Home screen experience? Maybe actionable notifications? How about direct document access? A permanent widget area? A better fast app switcher? How about some theming options? Or a universal Spotlight search that hooked into Siri?

Synergy, contracts/intents, better navigation gestures, a Flash video player, Gatekeeper, app demos and update pricing? The list can go on and on, but I only want your most important missing features!

No poll this time, just wide open comments and your chance to sound off and tell Apple what you think their feature priorities should be! What do you want to see Apple add to iOS?
