What Estate Planning in Lancaster, PA is All About - Submit Editorials

People would often say that when you fail to plan, you plan to fail. This is applicable to everything and anything in the world. Most successful people in the world would emphasize how important and necessary planning is when it comes to succeeding in any endeavor and filed of your life. This goes the same way for estate planning even in Lancaster, PA. Planning is necessary for people who want to buy or sell an estate. It is a significant step towards the ladder of convenience and success at the same time.

The first thing to do is to consider the factors which could possibly affect the estate acquisition or disposal. Most of these factors could either increase the value of the estate or decrease it. This could be possible by reducing the tax and other expenses needed for the whole process. Taxes can even reach up to 40% if worst comes to worst. This is done at the initial acquisition of the estate especially with those who would want to pass down the property to their heirs. But with excellent estate planning in Lancaster, PA, this could be avoided.

The will is the primary necessity in the whole process. The existence of a will which will dictate who takes which will be important to avoid misunderstanding in the family. This is not only limited to the house and lot but as well as all the other properties which the author of the will possesses. Aside from the wealth, it is also necessary for those whose children are still minors. Transferring the authority on who would take care of them and make the major decisions for them when their parents die is important. Choosing their guardian yourself is better.

Aside from the will, one of the factors which could limit the taxes for the estate is trust. Trust accounts are essential in estate planning in Lancaster, PA so as to control the taxes which would be applied to the properties for transfer and acquisition. Conditions on the distribution of the properties and assets will be beneficial to ensure that the financial goals of the family are met. Not only will you be sure that the assets go to the right people but you will also be sure that your family will be secured financially independently.

Some factors may depend state to state but the real issue is that taxes most of the times become a burden in the whole process of acquisition. The good thing however is that there are also some conditions on how much tax should be paid. Properties which cost under 1 million dollars would be exempted from the tax. Those that are over however will cost high taxes which could go up to 55% which is why estate planning is really important.

Rihanna Fired as Face of Nivea

Rihanna has been nixed as the face of Nivea products.

No specific reason or action was cited as the reason, but Stefan Heidenreich, the head of the brand, clearly isn't a big fan of the controversial singer.

Heidenreich publicly expressed disapproval with the skin care line's decision to have the sexy star as its public face, saying "Rihanna is a no-go."

Topless Rihanna Pic

"I do not understand how to bring the core brand of Nivea in conjunction with Rihanna. Nivea stands for trust, family and reliability," he added.

Heidenreich told the singer's ads shot last year - see one of our all-time favorite Rihanna pictures above - should have never been released.

Ouch. Tell us how you really feel.

For her part, Rihanna responded by posting a generic head shot of Heidenreich on her Twitter with the caption, "No caption necessary."

So, yeah. That about sums it up.

Oil rises above $94 for 1st time since May

Oil rose above $94 per barrel for the first time since May on Tuesday, buoyed by hopes for economic stimulus and worries about supply disruptions

Traders waited to see if a tropical storm could affect some of Mexico's crude production. There were also concerns about supplies from the Middle East after two pipelines carrying Iraqi crude to world markets were shut down, while rebels continued to battle government forces in Syria's largest city.

Oil prices also benefited from expectations that Europe, the U.S. and China will take fresh steps to promote economic growth, thereby boosting demand for oil. A rally in global stock markets also persuaded investors to buy riskier assets like commodities.

Meanwhile, analysts expect drivers on the West Coast of the U.S. to soon pay more for gas after a fire shut Chevron Corp.'s big Richmond refinery.

Chevron closed the refinery near San Francisco after a fire broke out Monday. There is no immediate word on when it will reopen. The refinery accounts for about 10 percent of all refining capacity on the West Coast and primarily produces gasoline.

Motorists should expect to soon see pump prices average more than $4 per gallon along the West Coast, said Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst at Oil Price Information Service. The average price for a gallon of regular in California was $3.86 on Tuesday.

Nationally, the average gasoline price rose 1.5 cents to $3.634 per gallon, according to AAA, Wright Express and OPIS. That's about a quarter more than it was a month ago and just 4 cents less than a year ago.

In New York, benchmark U.S. crude increased $1.47 to finish at $93.67 per barrel. It rose as high as $94.42 earlier. Brent crude, which is used to price international varieties of oil, rose $2.45, or 2.2 percent, to end at $112 per barrel, in London.

Authorities say Tropical Storm Ernesto could intensify into a hurricane and has the potential of moving into the Bay of Campeche, which houses two of Mexico's oil production areas. Mexico was the seventh-largest oil producer in the world in 2010 and the third-largest exporter to the U.S. last year, according to the Energy Information Administration.

Other tropical storms also are beginning to form that could affect oil tankers delivering supplies to the U.S.

"People have to realize it doesn't necessarily have to take a major storm to slow down imports into the Gulf Coast," Price Futures Group oil analyst Phil Flynn said.

In other trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange:

? Wholesale gasoline rose 6.91 cents to finish at $2.9913 per gallon.

? Heating oil rose 5.71 cents to end at $2.9980 per gallon.

? Natural gas rose 5.6 cents to finish at $2.9640 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Antarctica rescue drama: US expeditioner ailing

By F. Brinley Bruton, NBC News

Updated at 8:30 a.m. ET: A medical team?was heading to Antarctica on Wednesday in a bid to rescue an ailing American expeditioner.

The Australian?team of five?landed in Christchurch, New Zealand, on Wednesday?night. Team members were monitoring the weather in Antarctica before flying on to?McMurdo Station in their?Australian Airbus319?aircraft?by the end of the week, conditions permitting, officials with the?Australian Antarctic Division?(AAD) and?the?U.S. National Science Foundation?told NBC News.

The Australian Antarctic Division is a branch of the government's environment department.

Debbie Wing of the National Science Foundation told NBC News that a a U.S. C-17 aircraft was on standby in case the Airbus could not manage the trip.

From the archives: Why Antarctic rescues are so dangerous

The National Science Foundation had asked for help on the emergency mission and were in charge of the operation, AAD spokeswoman Patti Lucas Lucas told NBC News. Australian officials did not have any details as to the expeditioner's age or sex, she added.

McMurdo Station, established in 1955, is the largest Antarctic station, according to the?National Science Foundation.

According to the U.S. Antarctic Program's website:

"McMurdo Station ... the main U.S. station in Antarctica, is a coastal station at the southern tip of Ross Island, about 3,864 km (2,415 miles) south of Christchurch, New Zealand, and 1,360 km (850 miles) north of the South Pole. The original station was built in 1955 to 1956 for the International Geophysical Year. Today's station is the primary logistics facility for supply of inland stations and remote field camps, and is also the waste management center for much of the U.S. Antarctic Program. Year-round and summer science projects are supported at McMurdo."

AAD director Tony Fleming earlier told the AFP news service?that all countries with an interest in?Antarctica?"work together very cooperatively in these sorts of emergency situations in Antarctica to provide support when and as required."

Vast Antarctic ice sheet 'in play' with global warming

A 58-year-old New Hampshire woman who's been working at the South Pole on Monday flew out of the research station she'd been living in for a year. Renee-Nicole Douceur fell ill at the end of August and asked to be airlifted out. NBC's Anne Thompson reports.

Similar evacuations from the icy continent rare, with the last such rescue having happened in October 2011, when an American scientist suffered a stroke at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station and had to be airlifted out.?

Around 30 countries operate permanent research stations in Antarctica, the AFP reported.?

Study Accidentally Finds Chemotherapy Makes Cancer Far Worse :

Activist Post
August 7, 2012

A team of researchers looking into why cancer cells are so resilient accidentally stumbled upon a far more important discovery. While conducting their research, the team discovered that chemotherapy actually heavily damages healthy cells and subsequently triggers them to release a protein that sustains and fuels tumor growth.

Beyond that, it even makes the tumor highly resistant to future treatment.

Reporting their?findings?in the journal?Nature Medicine, the scientists report that the findings were ?completely unexpected?. Finding evidence of significant DNA damage when examining the effects of chemotherapy on tissue derived from men with prostate cancer, the writings are a big slap in the face to mainstream medical organizations who have been pushing chemotherapy for years as the only option available to cancer patients.

The news comes after it was previously revealed by?similarly breaking research?that expensive cancer drugs not only fail to treat tumors, but actually make them far worse. The cancer drugs were found to make tumors ?metasize? and grow massively in size after consumption. As a result, the drugs killed the patients more quickly.

Known as WNT16B, scientists who performed the research say that this protein created from chemo treatment boosts cancer cell survival and is the reason that chemotherapy actually ends lives more quickly.

Co-author Peter Nelson of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle?explains:

WNT16B, when secreted, would interact with nearby tumour cells and cause them to grow, invade, and importantly, resist subsequent therapy.

?The team then complimented the statement with a word of their own:

Our results indicate that damage responses in benign cells? may directly contribute to enhanced tumour growth kinetics.

Meanwhile, dirt cheap substances like turmeric and ginger have consistently been found to effectively shrink tumors and combat the spread of cancer. In a review of 11 studies, it was found that turmeric use reduced brain tumor size by a shocking 81%. Further research has also shown that turmeric is capable of halting cancer cell growth altogether. One woman recently hit the mainstream headlines by?revealing her victory?against cancer with the principal spice used being turmeric.

This accidental finding reached by scientists further shows the lack of real science behind many ?old paradigm? treatments, despite what many health officials would like you to believe. The truth of the matter is that natural alternatives do not even receive nearly as much funding as pharmaceutical drugs and medical interventions because there?s simply no room for profit. If everyone was using turmeric and vitamin D for cancer (better yet, cancer prevention), major drug companies would lose out.

Discussing The Mars Landing With My 137-Year-Old Grandfather

Yes, it was an amazing landing, an engineering triumph, a 150-million-mile slam dunk, spectacular in every way, except ... I think my grandpa would be disappointed. I'm not sure of this, since he died 50 years ago, but I have a hunch.

It starts with a handwritten letter he wrote back in 1907. He was a travelling salesman. He sold men's hats, and his job was to visit retailers all over the country. "One evening," he wrote, "train riding between Chicago and Kansas City or St. Louis, sitting the club car, I read a magazine, The Century..."

A letter from Robert Krulwich's grandfather. Courtesy of Robert Krulwich/NPR

An article caught his eye. It was written by "Dr. Percival Lowell, Harvard, in charge of the Flagstaff Observatory". It was about Mars, and whatever Lowell said, my grandfather was wowed. It "opened my eyes", he writes.

Hmmm. I figured it shouldn't be hard to read what my grandpa was reading, so I put "Percival Lowell", "The Century" and "1907" into a browser up it popped: "Mars as the Abode of Life," yes, written by Lowell, and oh wow! What a story he told my grandfather!

Percival Lowell's drawings of "canals" on Mars.

Lowell had built an observatory in Arizona, had spent his nights surveying the red planet, had found evidence of some enormous construction project visible on Mars with lines of "surprising straightness," "amazing uniformity,"and "immense length" that persisted over the months.

Lowell was more storyteller than scientist. He ignored technical issues like the thinness of the Martian atmosphere, the different chemistry of its air, and concentrated instead on the drama building in his head.

Mars is at this moment inhabited.

Lowell decided that creatures on Mars ? he didn't call them human, all he would say is that they could plan, organize and build on a global scale, were running shy of water, and getting increasingly thirsty. The planet, he said, showed evidence of drying, and these entities, to stay alive, had built a series of structures to move water from the melting poles to inhabited regions near the Martian equator.

He called them "canals" ? this at a time when engineers on Earth had just built the Suez canal, and were still building the Panama canal. Canal building was hot, hot, hot technology in the early 20th century, and these Martians were designing on a scale that dwarfed human accomplishment, suggesting to him that not only is "Mars at this moment inhabited," but these canal builders were "of an order whose acquaintance was worth the making" ? if we could get to them in time, before they perished.

From what he could tell, he told his readers, Martian life was at that very moment winking out, that these canal builders would soon die of thirst, there was no present way to span the distance between the two planets, so these remarkable neighbors he had just discovered would, "cosmically speaking, soon ... pass away." Civilization on Mars, Lowell thought, "...has not long to last," and all we could do is watch them contend with their fate across the void ? and perish.

Percival Lowell.

I don't know if my grandfather believed all of Lowell's narrative, but from the rest of his letter, I can tell he didn't overtly challenge the premise, that there were other intelligent creatures in the solar system, not mentioned in the Bible (that was, for my grandfather, a sore point) and that all this had "opened his eyes."

That was 1907. More than a hundred years have passed. Today, the stories we tell about Mars have gotten, or seem to have gotten, umm, smaller.

Lowell's canals turned out to be illusions. Two probes in 1976 found no convincing sign of Martian life, at least not on the planet surface. There remains the possibility that there is life under the ground on Mars, or failing that, that there was once life there, millions of years ago. The life we're imagining now is not a tool-making, canal building intelligence, but something more modest: a one celled carbon-based critter that lived in water and then died. Or maybe a methanogen, a bacteria that pooped (or still poops) gas.

A one ton machine has been plopped onto a low plain where water would have once been, and as my NPR colleague Joe Palca carefully and elegantly points out (when I grow up, I want to be Joe Palca), our goal is not to find Martian life, but rather to find building blocks of life, to see if life on Mars is or was possible.

We're not hunting for a Martian. We're not looking for a live body (or even a dead one). We are hunting for chemical traces that might have once supported the existence of a single-celled Martian ? maybe.

Ah, the difference a century makes.

What's The Point?

But if my grandfather were to lean across the seat in his club car and say, "Why bother?" I'd say to him with the same breathlessness of Percival Lowell, we still want to know what you wanted to know: Are we alone? Are we the only ones? Is there life anywhere else? Even if we can't talk to it, pity it, admire it or fear it, still, any "it" would be a revelation.

"It" may have been our ancestor. Some "Its" from Mars might have bounced to Earth and become the seed of us. "It" may have started there, stayed there, died there, but at least we know it was there, which means life can happen in more than one place. "It" may have a different chemistry, a different logic than we do, in which case, we have evidence of truly alien life forms.

"It's" story may be less operatic than Lowell's version, but if there ever was an "It", no matter how simple, how small, I want to know. We all do. Even (if he doesn't know already wherever he may be) my Grandpa.
