Spiritual leaders will give invocations and benedictions each day at the Republican National Convention. Will Mitt Romney ask anyone from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to offer a blessing?

Romney, who will be the first Mormon nominated for president by a major party, never discusses his church while campaigning unless the circumstances require it. Instead, he talks about "my faith" or "shared values" with voters.

Organizers are just starting to announce major speakers for the GOP convention, which begins Aug. 27 in Tampa, Fla. Mark DeMoss, an evangelical adviser to the Romney campaign, said details about religious leaders will be released about a week in advance.

Just like the political headliners, faith leaders usually are chosen to display as much diversity as possible while underscoring the candidate's story. In 2008, Republican nominee John McCain included a retired military chaplain who, like the candidate, was a prisoner during the Vietnam War, along with the pastor of the Southern Baptist church McCain attended in Arizona. Barack Obama accepted the Democratic presidential nomination between prayers from a rabbi from the liberal Reform branch of Judaism and an evangelical preacher, seeking common ground in the culture wars.

"I don't think there's anything to be gained politically by having a Mormon give an invocation," said Gary Smith, the author of "Faith and the Presidency" and a historian at Grove City College in Pennsylvania. "There are many roles that religious people can play in the convention. It would be less controversial to ask an esteemed Mormon friend or leader to do something else."

Any Mormon chosen for a ceremonial honor would be far from the first church member to perform a key role at the GOP national convention.

Mormons are overwhelmingly Republican and active in civic life. Latter-day Saints long have held top positions in federal government and political campaigns. At the 2004 GOP convention, President George W. Bush chose a prominent Mormon leader and author, Sheri Dew, to give an invocation. That wasn't a first either. When organizers announced the roster for the 1988 Republican convention that nominated George H.W. Bush, Mormon representatives were among the invited spiritual leaders.

As is customary at American civic events, prayers at the national political conventions largely avoid theological specifics. The messages are mostly directed to a generic God, using language spiritual enough to please voters of faith without alienating others.

Robert Millet, a Mormon scholar who advised Romney aides when the then-Massachusetts governor was considering his first presidential run, said Romney could ask a leader from his local church community in the Boston area to offer a prayer. In the 1980s and 1990s, Romney served as a bishop, or pastor, of his church in the Boston suburb of Belmont where he lives, then was stake president, which meant presiding over several congregations in the district. Mormons have no full-time paid clergy, and instead are led by an all-volunteer lay male leadership.

But given that the Romney campaign has shut down nearly all discussion of his faith, Millet said he wouldn't be surprised to see more evangelicals offering prayers from the convention stage. While some Christian conservatives have expressed reservations about Romney over his Mormon theology, they have overwhelmingly told pollsters they will vote for the Republican nominee.

"Most Mormons realize the last thing Romney wants people to begin thinking is that he's somehow going to allow Mormonism to impact his presidency," Millet said. "He just isn't going to talk Mormonism."

Convention officials did not respond to requests for comment, but it's likely any religious leader under consideration is getting a thorough vetting.

Doug Wead, architect of evangelical outreach for George H.W. Bush in 1988, had staff dedicated solely to deciding which religious figures should participate. Gallup polls were consulted and memos drafted analyzing who should speak, who should be in camera view and who should be out of the limelight.

"When the camera gets Barbara Bush, who would they see over her shoulder? We would rotate people in and out of there based on when we expected the TV camera would flash on the box where the family was sitting," said Wead, who is now an adviser to Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul.

Along with widely known clergy such as the Rev. Billy Graham, Wead invited professional athletes and others whose born-again backgrounds would generally only be known to other evangelicals.

"You're seeing a basketball player, not a born-again Christian. You're seeing someone in a mid-level Cabinet position, not a Nazarene," Wead said. "That's what I'm sure they'll do with Mormons. They'll have a Mormon in a position that the Mormons watching TV will say, 'Oh, there's Brother Jake.' Ninety-nine percent of viewers don't even see the person as Mormon."

Why do most medical students support the Affordable Care Act?

How do medical students feel about health care reform?

In September 2011, researchers surveyed 1,232 medical students at ten schools across the nation about their opinions on the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Four out of five students (80.1%) indicated their support. Meanwhile, the American Medical Student Association has officially and emphatically voiced its support of the ACA and celebrated the Supreme Court decision that upheld it.

Why the overwhelming support? Let?s run through some possibilities.

1. Do medical students believe the ACA will improve quality of care? Surveyors asked students to agree or disagree with the following statement: ?The PPACA will improve health care quality.? Only 31.4% agreed. The rest disagreed (20.9%) or were undecided (47.7%).

2. Do medical students believe the ACA will contain costs? Here, a mere 18.6% of students agreed. Nearly double (36.0%) disagreed, while the remaining 45.4% were undecided.

3. Do medical students believe the ACA will expand access? Here?s where the answers shifted dramatically. Slightly over two out of three students (67.6%) agreed, compared to only 6.5% disagreeing and 25.9% remaining undecided. That means students were over twice as likely to believe the ACA will expand access as they were to believe it will improve quality of care, and over 3.5 times as likely to believe this statement than the one on cost containment.

Finally, there?s a less obvious option.

4. Do medical students feel they should support reform, without good reason? Surprisingly, only a little over half (53.9%) said they understood the major provisions of the ACA. Meanwhile, nearly a third (30.2%) felt they did not understand, while 15.9% were undecided.

That last finding raises an interesting question. How can four out of five students be in favor of something if only half understand what it?s about? The same critique can go in the other direction; it would be just as silly to oppose something one doesn?t understand as it would be to support it. Part of the discrepancy could be due to a bug in the survey design. When the authors asked about support for the ACA, they did not offer an ?undecided? answer ? meaning if there were those who didn?t want to take a stance because they felt they didn?t sufficiently understand the provisions, there was no place to express it. However, there was an undecided option in response to the statement ?The American health care system as it exists today needs to be reformed.? Very, very few marked it. Rather, 94.8% agreed.

Taken together, these stats hint at a possibility that some students may be driven by a fervent reform desire to support any action forward, even if they are not completely clear on the details of what that action will entail. Before we come down too harshly on them, it is worth noting that others have applauded the idea of taking action, even in the face of uncertainty. As Atul Gawande put it:

?The reality of trying to solve a wicked problem [like health care] is that action of any kind presents risks and uncertainties. Yet so does inaction. All that leaders can do is weigh the possibilities as best they can and find a way forward. They must want to make the effort, however. That?s a key factor.?

But that?s not to say there isn?t a problem. There is a difference between accepting uncertainty of outcome and not knowing what the provisions state in the first place, and we would hope, of course, that those going into the medical profession would be knowledgeable about the terms of the policies they will soon be practicing under. Yet the study showed that medical students are surprisingly on par with the rest of the U.S. population in terms of understanding the provisions of the ACA. As a result, some are calling for more education in health policy. My school is somewhat unique in that all first-years take a required course in the subject, but we are not the norm. In the absence of formal education, medical students tend to get their information the same ways everyone else does ? through media coverage, blogging, and other forms of personal information seeking.

So why do most medical students, at least the ones surveyed here, support the ACA? The results suggest that the issue of access to care provides stronger grounds for support than issues of quality and cost containment. But we also can?t rule out the troubling possibility that some might not have a good reason at all.

Vietnam Gay Marriage News Brings Hope, Uncertainty To Gay Vietnamese Americans

The older she gets, the harder it is for Diana Bui to hide her sexual orientation from her big Vietnamese family. At 29, she's well past the traditional age for marriage, and she's running out of excuses to explain her single status, not to mention her short, asymmetrical haircut. So far, she said, only her mother, her brother, and a cousin in Vietnam know she identifies as queer.

But this weekend, that might change. The Washington, D.C., resident is heading home to California for a family reunion, and she's ready to talk with her extended family about a side of her life she hasn't discussed since her early 20s, when she first realized she was attracted to women. After the recent news, the subject feels almost unavoidable.

In late July, to Bui's shock, the Vietnamese government announced that it may change its position and recognize same-sex marriages as legal unions. On Sunday, more than a hundred activists biked through Vietnam's capital, trailing rainbow-colored streamers and shouting, "Equal rights for gays and lesbians," the Associated Press reported.

"Just hearing about what's happening in Vietnam is giving me more motivation and a little bit more courage and, oddly enough, support," Bui said. "I don't have to feel like I'm this disease or this is just a phase."

If Vietnam does legalize same-sex marriage, it will be the first country in Asia to do so. Like most Vietnamese Americans of her generation, Bui was raised by war refugees who risked their lives to come to the U.S. and still tell stories of suffering under the oppressive government back home. To this day, the government is frequently criticized by the international community for human rights abuses and, until recently, it listed homosexuality among the country's "social evils," along with prostitution and drug use.

When Bui first saw the news about the same-sex marriage shift online, she read the story three times in a row, just to make sure it was real. When she was growing up in the Vietnamese-American community around Los Angeles -- the largest Vietnamese population outside Vietnam -- being gay was not acceptable. She knew some people who came out to their families and were kicked out of their homes.

"As immigrants, we weren't that economically successful, but the one thing we do have is reputation and respect for the community," Bui said. "So that's how success is measured: whether or not you have family, kids, a husband or wife."

The first time she heard her parents talk about gay people, she was 15 and the family was gathered in the living room watching comedian Ellen DeGeneres come out of the closet. "They kept asking, 'How did this happen to her? Did it start when she was young?' There was this assumption that it all came from Western culture," Bui recalled.

This experience is common among lesbian and gay children of Vietnamese immigrants. A few years ago when Tran My Le told her parents she was gay, her mother, a Buddhist, tried to take her to an herbalist to cure her.

"She thought it was because I grew up in America, and that it was a Western construct or a disease and if I had been born in Vietnam, then I wouldn't have to deal with it," said Le, who is now 21 and lives in Los Angeles, where she does organizing with API-Equality, a gay rights group for the Asian and Pacific Islander communities.

Le refused to see an herbalist, and she never talked about the subject again, although she does bring her girlfriend over to the house for dinner. Her parents keep trying to set her up with promising young men in the community. "We're considered invisible right now," Le said.

Gina Masequesmay, a professor of Asian-American studies at California State University-Northridge, said that it's common to hear Vietnamese immigrants talk about homosexuality as a "Western" condition. But historically, gay people have existed peacefully in Vietnam.

"What is Western is to come out, not that you're gay," Masequesmay said, adding that in the past, a married man in Vietnam could take a male lover, and it would not be controversial as long as he fulfilled his "duty as a father and a husband."

The pressure to live up to these traditional standards still weighs on many gay American children of Vietnamese immigrants, and for some, legalizing same-sex marriage in the old country won't change that. Tracey Nguyen, a 23-year-old living in Berkeley, Calif., and working for API-Equality, has yet to tell her parents that she identifies as queer. Though they know she's working for a political advocacy group, she leaves out the part about gay rights. She hasn't discussed the recent news from Vietnam and is not sure she ever will.

"My parents came here in the '80s, and they always hopped from job to job, and with all their hardship and their escape from Vietnam, I want to make it worth it for them," Nguyen said. "I feel that coming out would hurt them."

In Vietnam, Justice Minister Ha Hung Cuong has framed the idea of legalizing same-sex marriage as a purely practical matter. "I think, as far as human rights are concerned, it's time for us to look at the reality," he said in a recent interview broadcast on national TV and radio, according to AP. "The number of homosexuals has mounted to hundreds of thousands. It's not a small figure. They live together without registering marriage. They may own property. We, of course, have to handle these issues legally."

But both Nguyen and Masequesmay are skeptical about the government's motivations. (The Justice Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Huffington Post.) Masequesmay sees it as part of a strategy to convince the international community that the Vietnamese government is forward-thinking. Three weeks before the justice minister gave his interview, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said she has raised U.S. concerns about human rights in Vietnam, including the detention of activists, lawyers and bloggers for "the peaceful expression of opinions and ideas."

"Marriage can be a football for countries to kick around. But so what if you recognize same-sex marriage if you don't have other rights or protections?" Masequesmay said. "All it says is, as long as you're gay, we might give you marriage, but you better not protest on any other issues, or jail."

Tri Do, a gay Vietnamese-American physician and researcher based in the San Francisco Bay area, reacted to the news differently. In his work on HIV prevention in Vietnam over the last decade, he has seen some signs of progress and acceptance in the government and in the society generally. "I see what's happening now as a natural progression in the country and in the government," he said. "Although what the government does and what people feel and think on the ground can be a very different thing."

Bui, too, was skeptical of the government's motivations at first, but now she is focused on the people close to her. She hasn't decided what exactly she'll say to her family, but she thinks she'll say something. "There's no way that people can't talk about it," she said. "Not anymore."

Russian general denies report he died in Syria

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A Russian general met reporters at the Defense Ministry in Moscow on Wednesday to deny reports that he had been killed by rebel forces in Syria and was shown on television looking well.

"I want to confirm that I am alive and well. I am in good health and I'm living in Moscow," Vladimir Petrovich Kuzheyev, a reserve general, was quoted as saying by Itar-Tass news agency.

Russian television briefly showed footage of Kuzheyev, in a blue shirt and no tie, at the Defense Ministry.

A Syrian rebel group said it had killed a Russian general working as an adviser to Syria's Defense ministry in an operation in the western Ghouta region on the outskirts of the capital Damascus.

The video, sent to Reuters, showed what the rebels said was a copy of the general's ID, as issued by the Syrian military, and named him as Vladimir Petrovich Kochyev.

The difference between that spelling and the name of the general who appeared in Moscow may be due to the way the Cyrillic letters were transcribed.

Kuzheyev did not make clear whether he had been in Syria. But Interfax news agency quoted a security source as saying he had been there advising the Syrian Defense Ministry before being transferred to the reserves in 2010. It said he now lived in Moscow.

Russian news agencies quoted the Russian Defense Ministry as saying the report of his death was a "bald-faced lie."

Russia is one of the few countries that has backed Assad diplomatically ever since the popular uprising against his rule began 17 months ago. It is believed to have several hundred military personnel in Syria.

Planning for Easter Assemblies ? What Ever It Is

Schools who are looking for ideas and inspiration for Easter assemblies can find many wonderful educational resources online as well as a great selection of music for Easter Assemblies and nativity play productions. Most schools no matter what faith they are will celebrate Easter and Christmas so children get to learn about the significance of these events. Even schools that mainly have children from other faiths such as Jews or Muslims will often learn about Christian beliefs and will be taught about Easter and Christmas in special Easter assemblies or by doing a nativity play.
Most schools that are not associated with a specific religion or are catholic or Christian schools will most definitely celebrate Easter at school with Easter Assembliesand Christmas with a Nativity play as the majority of children who attend these schools will also be celebrating these events and will be keen to find out more about them. Schools will often use a variety of music to help children to learn and to also add a fun element to learning. Music is a great way to make people feel happy and to allow them to express different emotions. There are companies who specialise in creating music CD?s for educational settings. Many educational music CD?s are available that are especially for Easter assemblies or for use in Nativity play productions and these allow teachers to easily teach pupils songs for them to sing for various activities and productions.
Lots of schools will use educational music CD?s to help plan and prepare for Easter assemblies and other events like the school nativity play. Most of the modern CD?s that are available today for use in Easter assemblies will have all the relevant backing tracks so there is no need for a piano making it much easier to learn and prepare for the assembly. Some CD?s designed to offer inspiration for Easter assemblies not only have Easter songs on but they also have readings, prayers, stories, activities and ideas to make a fun and exciting assembly. Companies who sell CD?s for Easter assemblies and for Nativity play productions will tend to sell CD?s for different age ranges of children.

Why Businesses are Increasingly Turning to the Internet | Blog ...

We all know that the internet is a multifaceted instrument, simply because it has the ability to serve many purposes at one time. The internet allows us to socialize, gather information, communicate, and much more. Therefore, we can claim that it has become integral part of our daily lives. In today?s world, you will come across many companies who have started to use the internet to boost their sales and profits. If you are wondering why businesses are turning towards the internet, then you have come to the right article. Here, we explore the main reasons for this trend.

The global audience
The internet allows you to publish and share your information with more than 200 countries all the time. It is a very cost efficient way of sharing information with a large audience. A large audience is more likely to give more business to a company. Moreover, with the internet, the owner?s don?t have to worry about the website shutting down and being unresponsive, because the internet is operational 24 hours, 7 days a week, throughout a year.

Inexpensive
Companies use the internet for their products or services, because they know that it is one of the most inexpensive ways of promoting the business, especially when it is compared to other promotional techniques. With the inflation rate rising and the economy trembling, traditional advertising can no longer be opted by every company. However, every company, whether it is big or small can use the internet to promote their business because it only cost a few thousands of dollars to spread information to millions of internet users.

Apart from saving on the advertisements, companies that operate online tend to save ample amounts of money because they do not need to create a physical office or purchase any type of hardware. Moreover, online business also have a very low operating expense, thus starting and maintaining one is relatively easy to do.

Advanced product advertising
The internet is a great place to advertise certain products and services. The advancement in technology, has allowed the internet to support heavy multimedia applications, which make the advertisements exciting and captivating. Today, companies can promote their products or services through audio clips, video clips and still images. Companies can alter these clips and images, according to their requirement. Such features of the internet, allow companies to create adverts that give customers the details they need. With such power, customers are more likely to make a favorable decision.

Networking Opportunities
In the past, business? interacted by physically meeting up in different locations to share thoughts on certain issue. Not only it was difficult, but also time consuming and expensive to do. However, now with the help of internet, companies can interact with millions of people around the globe, through live chat rooms or forums. These discussions can last for as long as the parties wish, because when it?s through the internet, fewer resources are at stake. With such networking abilities, companies have a higher chance of growing and experiencing the market.

Customer Management
By using the internet, companies can now manage their customers with ease and provide them the service they are looking for. The internet allows companies to give immediate feedback and support to the customer via e-mail, live chats, social networks or an online forum. Immediate feedback helps retain unsatisfied customers and increases customer loyalty towards the brand, product or service. Apart from being able to give immediate feedback, businesses can use the internet to gather feedback and use it to their advantage. They can even offer updates and advice on how to use the product or service to full extent. Such acts will allow the company to efficiently manage their customer base and increase their revenues.

Higher Efficiency
Businesses prefer to operate via internet because they have access to many applications that help manage their business efficiently. The internet is filled with services that can help a company manage its common financial, inventory and human resource related issues. These services can be paid or free ? however for accurate guidance it is suggested you opt for the paid ones. Such services help businesses deliver the high performance, suiting customer?s desire.

Build Company Image
Another reason companies are using the internet is because it helps build the company?s image. Today, if a company does not have an online presence, then many of us will doubt the company?s operation and existence. A professional website surely adds to company?s image, especially if the company adds relevant content.

Easy to Start
We see a rapid increase in online businesses, because it is very easy to start an online business today. Earlier, companies required some expertise to set up and maintain a website, but now they do not. The internet is filled with website platforms, which require minimal skills, time and effort from the company. Thus, literally anyone can start and operate an online business, hence the rapid increase in this trend.

For simplicity sake, only major reasons have been discussed and even from the few reasons, it is clear why businesses have turned to the internet. Research shows that even though the world is suffering from a serious recession, online companies tend to be growing at an average 25% per year. Such companies are experiencing high sales and profits. It is obvious, that the internet has created a new economy, which will continue to change the way business takes place. The internet has allowed companies many benefits, which they hope, keep reaping fruit by staying and expanding their online presence. This trend has also lead to an increase in competition amongst the companies, therefore businesses that do not operate online, tend to have a lower survival rate. Therefore, in order to run a successful business and survive in the competitive environment, you must join the online committee.

Curiosity: A Mars robot for our times

IT MAY be the first time that a crowd has gathered in front of the big screens in Times Square to cheer on a robot - in this case, NASA's Mars rover, Curiosity, which successfully touched down earlier this week (see "Where next? Curiosity's scientific priorities on Mars"). The New York crowd's jubilation was repeated around the world, both in the flesh and online.

The combination of tweets purportedly sent by the rover, pictures posted from Mars and live video of the very human reactions at mission control, provoked such enthusiasm as to cast doubt on the argument made by advocates of human spaceflight that robotic explorers can never be as engaging as astronauts.

It may be a long time before we put humans on the Red Planet. But for a generation raised online, interacting with robots this sophisticated, the wait may prove surprisingly easy to endure.
