VP pick Ryan brings long record to dissect

MADISON, Wis. (AP) ? Rep. Paul Ryan's record runs deeper than his signature budget and Medicare ideas.

Mitt Romney's running mate is against abortion rights, has a top rating from gun-rights groups and backed sending troops to the wars. But in conflict with fellow Republicans, he's defended wage laws favored by unions. And he supported the auto industry bailout opposed by Romney and the bank bailout that the party's right flank now opposes.

Ryan's 14 years in Congress leave a long trail of votes for Democrats to pick apart, a process that began with gusto as Romney announced his choice Saturday.

Ryan's intense interest in fiscal issues ? he holds a degree in economics and chairs the House Budget Committee ? helps explain why those matters define him in Washington. But Ryan has always been a reliable vote on proposals dear to social conservatives, enough to earn him a perfect score from a key anti-abortion group back home.

This year, Republicans rallied behind his debt and deficit prescription to curtail federal spending on food stamps, Pell Grants for education and other programs. His debt-reduction proposal calls for cuts in personal and corporate tax rates, but also would pare back deductions and preferences that litter the tax code. So far, it has been little more than a GOP wish list that passed the Republican-led House but hasn't passed the Democratic-controlled Senate.

Ryan wants to fashion Medicare into a plan more like a 401(K), steering future retirees into private insurance plans, with a fixed payment from the government that may or may not cover as much of a retiree's costs as does the current program. It departs from the current "fee for service" framework in which the government pays doctor and hospital bills.

That's a marked shift in the social compact and not the only one he proposes. Ryan also wants to shift Medicaid to the states and sharply limit the growth of federal spending on that program. Medicare and Medicaid together reach some 100 million people.

His votes in Congress have gone against the grain at times. When Republicans have attempted to repeal federal wage protection laws for unions, Ryan has sided with Democrats in opposition. Even so, Ryan ardently campaigned for Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, who fended off a recall attempt spurred by state law changes cast as anti-union.

Ryan, whose district lost General Motors assembly plant a couple of years ago, supported the multi-billion dollar auto industry bailout started under then-Republican President George W. Bush and continued under President Barack Obama. Romney famously penned an opinion piece in 2008 with the headline, "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt," arguing automakers could have gone through a managed bankruptcy and re-emerged without such massive help from taxpayers.

But there's no question that his budget and Medicare plan stand among the boldest ideas in Washington and present the fattest target for Democrats. Mindful of such sensitivities, Romney campaign adviser Ed Gillespie emphasized Sunday that as president, Romney "would be putting forward his own budget" as much as he admires Ryan's, making clear the presidential hopeful is not wedded to his running mate's proposals.

In taking his place on the ticket, Ryan lamented a Washington culture of timidity on the pressing issues of the time.

"We're running out of time ? and we can't afford four more years of this," Ryan said as Romney looked on. "Politicians from both parties have made empty promises which will soon become broken promises ? with painful consequences ? if we fail to act now."

Obama's campaign said Ryan's ideas were the potentially painful ones.

"In naming Congressman Paul Ryan, Mitt Romney has chosen a leader of the House Republicans who shares his commitment to the flawed theory that new budget-busting tax cuts for the wealthy, while placing greater burdens on the middle class and seniors, will somehow deliver a stronger economy," said Obama campaign manager Jim Messina.

Ryan has taken thousands of recorded votes since coming to Congress in 1999, a minefield for any candidate let alone one aspiring to the White House.

Ryan also signed his name to 1,064 bills and resolutions over that span. Many deal with eye-glazing tax policy. Others aim to restrict abortion procedures. He's made a recurring push for line-item veto powers to restrain spending.

A number qualify as parochial measures. For instance, he's sponsored legislation to modify tax treatment of archery equipment and ease tariffs on motorcycle wheels, clearly a nod to Harley-Davidson Motor Co.'s Wisconsin base.

The local touches don't impress Ryan opponents, who say he's padded his national reputation at the expense of his district.

State Rep. Peter Barca, a Democratic former congressman from southeastern Wisconsin, criticized Ryan's record and proposals as inconsistent with the pulse of the area he represents.

"He's an articulate, good-looking guy," Barca said. "He'd talk like a moderate in Wisconsin but it wasn't until his last budget that people saw how extreme his views are."

Still, Ryan has won seven congressional elections, most handily. He has never run statewide, meaning the campaign to snatch the Wisconsin electoral votes that went to President Barack Obama last time will be a test of his appeal beyond his back yard.

Ben Maisani, Boyfriend of Anderson Cooper, Spotted Smooching Another Man

Move over, Robert Pattinson. Make room at the bar for Anderson Cooper.

The CNN anchor may need to drown his sorrows in a few suds, following the publication of a few photos that certainly make it look like Ben Maisani has gone all Kristen Stewart on his live-in boyfriend.

Anderson Cooper at the Daytime Emmys

The Daily Mail has posted shots of Maisani locking lips with an unidentified brunette in Grand Central Park. They were reportedly taken this past week and follow rumors that the journalist was hoping to marry his loved one as soon as Labor Day.

Cooper and Maisani - who owns the bar Eastern Bloc in Manhattan's East Village - have been together for approximately three years. They live together in Cooper's NYC townhouse.

Last month, following years of speculation, Cooper came out as gay in one of the classiest, most well-written statements we've read yet on this issue.

NY cops kill knife-wielding man near Times Square

By NBCNewYork.com

Cell phone video shows police chasing a man they shot near Times Square Saturday afternoon.

Updated 2:15 p.m. Sunday: NEW YORK -- Police shot and killed a man who threatened them with a large knife near Times Square Saturday afternoon.

Officials said the man, who police observed smoking marijuana on 44th Street and 7th Avenue, became agitated when officers approached him. He then pulled out an 11-inch knife and raised it over his head. Officers ordered him to drop the weapon, but he refused, police said.

As the man backed down 7th Avenue, police pepper sprayed him six times to try and disarm him, but the man continued to threaten officers with the knife. Police said that as he neared the corner of 37th Street, he lunged at officers with the knife, forcing them to shoot him. Two officers fired a total of 12 shots, striking the man in the chest, groin, left arm and left calf.

The man was identified Sunday by police as 51-year-old Darrius Kennedy of Hempstead, Long Island.

See the cellphone video and original story at NBCNewYork.com

Police say Kennedy has 10 prior arrests, one of which resulted in him being hospitalized for a psych evaluation in October of 2008, after police took him into custody for knocking garbage cans over in Times Square. In November of 2008 Kennedy was arrested for threatening motorists and cops with a screwdriver on Broadway and West 66 street, police said.

No officers or bystanders were injured in Saturday's incident, which took place in an area crowded with pedestrians.

Witnesses to the shooting described a chaotic scene in Midtown.

"I was standing at the corner of 42nd Street and saw this guy running in middle of street, police chasing him" said Edgar Delgado, who works in the area. "He had a machete type knife. He didn't want to stop. Police told him to drop the knife. He didn't. They shot him."

A witness' cell phone video acquired by NBC 4 New York shows police pursuing the Kennedy along 7th Avenue and then opening fire.

"It was scary because a shooting starts here someone could get hurt quickly," Delgado said.

Bites Fil Beit Ramadan: Chicken with green and black olives - Daily ...

Ramadan offers a whole new challenge to cooking Egyptian food. The breaking of the fast, Iftar, is the main menu of the day and consists of an array of dishes. Traditionally the meal starts with juice, to prepare the stomach for the feast that is to come, and a savoury soup. Appetisers are up next, followed by a main course and a sweet dessert completes the meal.
Iftars are meant to be shared and inviting your close friends and family for a home-cooked dinner-cum-breakfast can be daunting. But not to worry; during the month we will be giving you suggestions for full menus with a complete recipe for one of the dishes.
Happy Ramadan!

Lonely and Adrift | Ask the Therapist

I?m feeling very lonely, I don?t have any friends. When I do get friends, if they make one mistake I get rid of them and always find faults. My past 2 relationships I messed up, the 1st one was for 3 years, and during that time I was living with my dad,he lost his job for over a year and we had no money and became very reliant on him he broke up with me when I needed him most. After we broke up I met someone else, whom I love a lot but because I still dwelled on my old relationship we broke up too.my parents split up when I was 16,I?m the youngest,I have 2 older brothers. My mum has never been the same, and she drinks a lot and is very lonely.I can?t forgive myself for mistakes I?ve made, all my family live abroad in different countries except my mum,I live alone.I moved around a lot since I was 9..and never kept friends, and now I find myself all alone.I find it hard to tell my family.

A. I am not certain of your exact question so I can only provide general advice. The problem area that you identified involves relationships. You believe that you are to blame for the demise of your relationships. That may or may not be true.

The fact that when a friend ?makes a mistake, you get rid of them? would be problematic in virtually any relationship, romantic or otherwise. There are some mistakes that are unforgivable and would likely warrant the ending of a relationship. For instance, a new friend physically harming you would understandably warrant the ending of a relationship.

Without knowing what mistakes your friends made, it?s difficult to determine if you were correct to end the friendship. Everyone makes mistakes. Many mistakes are forgivable but there are exceptions.

Generally speaking, if you continue to end relationships after a friend makes a minor mistake, then you will be unable to establish long-term relationships. This is a problem because it is human nature to desire relationships. In the absence of meaningful relationships, you will likely be unhappy.

My recommendation is to meet with a therapist who could thoroughly evaluate your behavior in relationships. A therapist can also objectively assess how and if you are contributing to your relationship problems. The positive aspect of therapy is that you can be retrained to think differently and to act differently toward others. In other words, therapy affords you the opportunity to learn new skills and behaviors that will improve the quality of your relationships and thus your life.

Finally, you stated that you ?can?t forgive yourself for the mistakes? you have made. As mentioned above, everyone make mistakes. Many of the mistakes people make stem from essentially not knowing alternative and more appropriate ways to behave. Acknowledge your mistakes, determine what led to your mistakes and make a concerted effort not to repeat them. That would be a much healthier, action-oriented approach to problem-solving than your current approach, which involves self-blame. A therapist could assist you in developing these problem solving skills. I hope that you will consider therapy. Please take care.

Romney, Ryan hit the road in an energized campaign

WAUKESHA, Wisc. (Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney took vice presidential running mate Paul Ryan home to a tearful welcome in Wisconsin on Sunday in a celebratory event that produced a flash of anger from Romney over what he considers dishonest campaigning by President Barack Obama.

Ryan, a Wisconsin congressman elevated to Romney's No. 2 on Saturday, wiped away tears and choked up as he and Romney made a dramatic entrance on stage in front of a crowd of around 8,000 to the theme song of the movie, "Air Force One."

Clearly reveling in the moment as the native son come home, Ryan told them: "I'm a Wisconsinite through and through."

"My veins run with cheese, bratwurst, a little Spotted Cow ... and some Millers," he said to laughter. "I like to hunt here, I like to fish here, to snowmobile here. I even think ice fishing is interesting."

The November 6 election is more than two months away, but Sunday's rally had the intensity of a typical late-October campaign event. It showed how Romney's selection of the Wisconsin congressman as his running mate has injected new energy into a campaign that had struggled to move beyond Democrats' efforts to cast Romney as a wealthy former private equity executive who cannot relate to middle-class Americans.

Romney hopes the enthusiasm produced by the No. 2 pick will generate a spark that will help him erase a lead Obama has produced in recent polls of voters.

"What a homecoming for a terrific guy," Romney told the Waukesha crowd. "I guess you think I made the right decision, the right choice? I know I did."

When a heckler tried to disrupt the event, Romney unleashed frustrations at the Obama campaign over a television ad produced by a pro-Obama group that all but suggested Romney shared some of the blame for the death of the wife of a steelworker, who lost his job and health insurance when Romney's Bain Capital bought the company.

The ad has been roundly condemned by independent fact-checkers, but the Obama campaign has not called for the ad to be pulled. While the Romney campaign has engaged in negative tactics as well, his aides felt the ad crossed a line.

"There's no question but if you follow the campaign of Barack Obama, he's going to do everything in his power to make this the lowest, meanest negative campaign in history. We're not going to let that happen. This is going to be a campaign about ideas about the future of America," Romney said angrily.

"Mr. President, take your campaign out of the gutter," he said. "Let's talk about the real issues that America faces."

Romney, 65, seemed relieved to have a sidekick to end what he has called the "two against one" dynamic of the race, with Obama and Vice President Joe Biden on one side and Romney on the other.

"It's a far more compelling dynamic than just being out there on my own," Romney told reporters late Saturday.

But it also was evident that Romney's selection of Ryan - who is known for his sweeping budget plan to reduce government spending and debt by trimming taxes and revamping Medicare and other social programs - is going to raise a series of hurdles for his campaign as it sprints toward Election Day.

In choosing Ryan, Romney is all but attaching himself to Ryan's controversial budget plan, which has been blasted by Democrats who say it would dismantle popular social programs that help the elderly and the poor.

Ryan's selection also suggested that Romney is tackling a prickly task during an intense, nasty and likely close race for the White House. He is asking Americans to consider tough questions about the future of Medicare, the government-backed health insurance program for the elderly, and a range of other government programs.

During an interview that Romney and Ryan gave to CBS's Bob Schieffer on "60 Minutes" on Sunday, Ryan responded to criticism of his Medicare plan by noting that it would apply only to those younger than 55.

"My mom is a Medicare senior in Florida," Ryan said. "Our point is, we need to preserve their benefits, because government made promises to them that they've organized their retirements around. In order to make sure we can do that, you must reform it for those of us who are younger. And we think these reforms are good reforms."

Romney and Ryan will now head off in different directions, Romney to resume bus tour in Florida and Ryan goes to Iowa on Monday.

SEEKING A NATIONAL DEBATE?

In previous elections, candidates who have started a not-so-popular conversation with American voters have run into problems.

In 1984, for example, Democrat Walter Mondale emphasized the need for higher taxes and was swamped at the ballot box as voters re-elected Republican Ronald Reagan.

If Romney's campaign wants to foster a national debate over social programs and government entitlements, the big challenge will be doing so under the white-hot glow of the final weeks of a presidential campaign that so far has been defined by sound-bite messaging and out-of-context attacks by both sides.

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus cast Romney's campaign as the one being honest with Americans about the nation's fiscal future and said Obama's team is more interested in attacking Romney.

Selecting Ryan shows that Romney "has the leadership and courage to present to the American people a real contrast and a real debate that the American people deserve," Priebus said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

Even so, Romney's campaign stressed that the presumptive Republican nominee would propose his own fiscal plan, suggesting it did not want the former Massachusetts governor to be tied to everything in Ryan's budget.

"The thing you have to remember about these campaigns is that Governor Romney is at the top of the ticket, and that Governor Romney's vision for the country is something that congressman Ryan supports," Romney spokesman Kevin Madden said.

DEMOCRATS TAKE AIM

Democrats' efforts to cast Ryan - and, by extension, Romney - as a threat to Medicare could be key in the election.

Ryan's plan calls for an end to the guaranteed benefit in Medicare and replaces it with a system that would give vouchers to recipients to pay for health insurance.

The risk in such a plan is that if healthcare costs rise faster than the value of the vouchers, seniors would have to pay the difference.

Obama's senior campaign adviser David Axelrod said on "Meet the Press" that the Medicare changes supported by Ryan would send the healthcare program, which polls indicate most Americans do not want changed, into a "death spiral."

Independent groups that typically support Democrats have been more dramatic in their criticism.

Romney rejected the notion that Ryan's plan would kill Medicare.

Ryan "has a plan ... to make sure we can save Medicare," Romney said. "And guess what, he's one of two sponsors - and guess what, the other is a leading Democrat," a reference to Oregon Senator Ron Wyden.

Wyden, however, disagreed with Romney's characterization of his work on the Medicare issue, saying that he has voted against Medicare changes proposed in Ryan's budget.

Wyden told The Huffington Post that he merely had worked on a "policy paper" with Ryan that was designed to "start a conversation about how Democrats and Republicans might work together to uphold the Medicare guarantee."
