Top 3 reasons #TCUK12 is a unique #techcomm conference ? Kai's ...

Posted on by Kai

TCUK is one of my favorite tech comm conferences thanks to its unique blend of varied, yet relevant progamming and a diverse crowd in a small, personable conference.

Logo of the TCUK conferenceTCUK in Newcastle from 2 to 4 October will be the third time I attend the conference, and if anything I?m looking forward to it even more than in previous years. Here are 3 reasons for my anticipation.

1. Interdisciplinary sessions

All tech comm conferences, including TCUK, manage to put on a diverse mix of interesting and applicable sessions. TCUK excels in reaching out into other disciplines.

In previous years, presentations covered fields such as statistics, public speaking, user experience design, and cognitive science. Not only were those sessions engaging, they also took care to show how they?re relevant and applicable to technical communications. (Full disclosure: I was co-presenter at one of those sessions.)

2. Diverse crowd

While larger conferences like the STC Summit and tekom/tcworld can be a bit overwhelming and anonymous, I find TCUK has a very good size: Large enough to draw a diverse crowd of interesting people, yet small enough that I never felt I was lost and still looking at strangers? faces on the third day.

3. Personable vibe

The organizers from ISTC manage to create a professional, communal vibe that all but eliminates the differences between speakers, seasoned attendees and newbies. As far as I know, the organizers want speakers to attend the full conference, if at all possible, to encourage networking.

If you know other reasons that make TCUK unique or if you?re wondering just how good it is, feel free to leave a comment.

Storm lashes Florida, delaying Republican convention

Tropical Storm Isaac lashed southern Florida Sunday and was expected to become a hurricane, forcing a one-day delay of the US Republican convention, after killing seven people in Haiti.

With winds reaching 50 miles (85 kilometers) per hour, the storm brought heavy rain and choppy seas to the Florida Keys after battering Haiti and sweeping across Cuba late Saturday, the US National Hurricane Center said.

A hurricane warning was in effect for the Florida Keys and parts of the state's southwest coast, and the Republican Party announced that severe weather warnings had postponed the start of its four-day gathering in Tampa.

The gathering is now set to nominally open Monday and then immediately adjourn to reconvene on Tuesday, when the weather is expected to clear up.

Early Sunday, the eye of the storm was around 80 miles southeast of Key West, Florida, and it was moving northwest at 18 miles per hour, with forecasts suggesting it would strengthen over the next 48 hours, the NHC said.

In its 2:00 pm (1800 GMT) advisory, the Miami-based NHC said "hurricane" conditions" were possible in the Keys and southern Florida.

It predicted Isaac would become a hurricane as it moves back into the Gulf on a path that would have it make landfall Wednesday on the southern US coast.

Tens of thousands of Republicans will be in Tampa for speeches, parties and the formal nomination of former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney as the candidate to take on President Barack Obama in the November 6 election.

Officials said they did not fear a direct hit on the city but had acted out of concern that high winds, rain and possible coastal flooding could make travel dangerous, particularly for large buses packed with delegates.

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus told CNN the decision was motivated by concern for buses traveling over long bridges and the difficulty of erecting tents to shelter security lines at venue entrances.

He insisted, however, that the show would go on, saying: "We're 100 percent full steam ahead on Tuesday."

Thousands of convention delegates are to stay in hotels along a coastal barrier island, which is likely to bear the brunt of the storm, and a decision was to be made on Sunday over whether to move them to higher ground.

Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn, a Democrat, sought to calm jitters about the weather, saying the storm might bring heavy rain to Tampa on the first of the four-day convention but insisting that "Tuesday is going to be fine."

Governor Rick Scott told CNN his state was prepared for any scenario.

"We're a state that knows how to do hurricanes. We don't like them, but we know how to do them. We do hurricanes well," he told CNN.

The White House said Obama had been briefed on storm preparations and had spoken with Scott, offering federal support for "efforts to ensure the safety of those visiting the state for the Republican National Convention."

Vice President Joe Biden canceled a trip to Tampa and other Florida cities because of the approaching storm, Obama's Democratic campaign said.

And in the Gulf of Mexico, BP evacuated its Thunder Horse platform, the world's largest offshore production and drilling facility.

Isaac was near hurricane strength early Saturday when the eye of the storm passed over Haiti, where hundreds of thousands of people are still living in squalid, makeshift camps following a catastrophic 2010 earthquake.

An eight-year-old Haitian girl died when a wall collapsed at her home and a 51-year-old woman died when her roof collapsed, according to officials, who later said five other people had also died in the storm.

More than 5,000 families had been evacuated to temporary shelters ahead of Isaac as aid groups provided clean water and hygiene kits to try to limit the risk of contaminated water and the spread of disease.

More than 150 Haitians detained in Bahamas after boat runs aground

NASSAU (Reuters) - More than 150 illegal Haitian migrants are in custody in the Bahamas, after their sail boat ran aground on Andros islands during stormy seas, officials said on Sunday.

Jack Thompson, the Bahamas' director of immigration, said in a statement that the Haitians had been detained and were being held in a warehouse and a Roman Catholic Church center on Andros.

The Bahamian authorities said they believe up to 200 migrants may have been aboard the boat, which ran aground on Saturday.

The U.S. Coast Guard has provided a helicopter to transport Bahamian officials to Mangrove Cay, Andros, to assist in a search and rescue operation.

Haiti is the poorest nation in the Americas and there is a long and tragic history of people drowning while trying to escape its crushing poverty in rickety boats headed for the United States.

The Haitians were apprehended on Saturday near Mangrove Cay, seven days after leaving Cap Haitien in Haiti, officials said.

The survivors have already been examined by doctors and found to be in good health, apart from several suffering from dehydration.

Thompson said the authorities believed some migrants may have drowned, but search and rescue efforts were being hampered by tropical storm Isaac's heavy winds and rough seas.

"We are strategizing on how to proceed. Once the weather subsides, we stand ready to take the appropriate action," he said.

Solid Advice If You Are Finally Looking To Quit Smoking ?

When you are trying to quit smoking and feel the urge for a cigarette, have a drink of water instead. Water is wonderful for removing toxins from your body. This includes the toxins that smoking puts in your body. Have a drink of water instead of a cigarette and know that you are rinsing your body of toxins, instead of adding more.

Add exercise to your regular routine if you are trying to smoke. Physical activity can help you to deal with the nicotine cravings you will experience. Exercise can help to lessen these withdrawal symptoms. Get out and walk the dog or dig in your garden, and you will have an easier time quitting smoking.

Be sure that when you?re trying to quit smoking that you try to limit beverages that make you crave tobacco. For some people this means cutting back on coffee or alcohol. If you consume these drinks you might feel urges to smoke, especially with alcohol. Stay away from these things or limit your intake for a while if you?re quitting smoking.

When you are fighting the urge to smoke, go and do some exercise. Not only will your body benefit while you are keeping fit, the physical activity can help to keep the urges at bay. Anything that can be used as a distraction while you are working through the crave is a great tool to use.

If you are finding that you aren?t enjoying food and drinks as much as you used to, consider quitting smoking. Smoking can cause damage to the taste buds in your mouth, meaning that you don?t recognize tastes in the same way. If you quit, your taste buds will soon recuperate, meaning you will be able to enjoy your favorite meals once again.

While part of the idea of quitting smoking is to save money, treat yourself to a reward now and again with the money that you haven?t spent on cigarettes. These treats give your something to look forward to and serve as a reminder of the things you may not have been able to buy as a smoker.

Begin walking during the times you would normally have a cigarette. This will replace the bad habit with something more positive and aid your overall health. You will miss the cigarette less if you have found another activity to replace it with. This will work especially well in the mornings and after meals.

Positive thinking makes a big difference when it comes to quitting smoking. You will be able to better conquer temptations if you recognize every day without smoking, as an achievement in itself. By keeping track of small goals, you can keep your self-esteem high and hopefully, conquer that habit for good!

After you are on one for a while, you will find smoking having no effect on your mood. You will just stop because it does not do anything for you anymore.

As you develop your quit plan, you will also want to develop a diet plan. Quitting smoking tends to lead to weight gain for a lot of former smokers. You can avoid this by paying close attention to your diet while you quit. Drink plenty of water and follow a meal plan. If you do gain weight though, remember that gaining a few pounds is worth it, if it leads to you dropping the smoking habit.

SC GOP reopens filing for Charleston Senate seat

CHARLESTON, S.C. --?

The Republican Party is preparing for a do-over primary for the state Senate seat long held by Lt. Gov. Glenn McConnell.

The party hopes for another primary after a judge ruled earlier this month that its former nominee, Paul Thurmond, did not properly submit paperwork to appear on June ballots.

Circuit Judge Ernest Kinard ruled Thurmond was not an elected official and therefore not exempt from submitting a form when filing his candidacy. The son of the late U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond is a former Charleston County councilman.

Kinard called for a special primary to determine the nominee on Nov. 6 ballots for the Charleston County seat. But that decision is being appealed.

Candidates can re-file for the seat from Tuesday through Sept. 4. The primary would be Sept. 18.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? When man first harnessed fire, no one recorded it. When the Wright Brothers showed man could fly, only a handful of people witnessed it. But when Neil Armstrong took that first small step on the moon in July 1969, an entire globe watched in grainy black-and-white from a quarter million miles away

We saw it. We were part of it. He took that "giant leap for mankind" for us.

Although more than half of the world's population wasn't alive then, it was an event that changed and expanded the globe.

"It's a human achievement that will be remembered forever," said John Logsdon, professor emeritus of space policy at George Washington University. Those first steps were beamed to nearly every country around the world, thanks to a recently launched satellite. It was truly the first global mass media event, Logsdon said. An estimated 600 million people ? 1 out of every 5 on the planet ? watched.

The two historical events likely to be long remembered from the 20th Century are the moon landing and the first atomic bomb, said Smithsonian Institution space curator Roger Launius.

"There is no way to overestimate that significance in human history and he is forever linked to that," Launius said of Armstrong, who died Saturday at age 82.

??????????????? Just as the voyage of Christopher Columbus split historic eras 500 years ago, so will Neil Armstrong and Apollo 11, said Rice University historian Douglas Brinkley, a specialist in 20th Century history.

??????????????? "We may be living in the age of Armstrong," said Brinkley, who conducted oral histories for NASA, including sessions with Armstrong.

The late science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke wrote that the Apollo 11 moon landing was "one of the great divides in human history; we are sundered from it forever by the moment when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin stepped out on to the Sea of Tranquility. Now history and fiction have become inexorably intertwined."

Since that day, there's been a common phrase: "If we can send a man to the moon, why can't we ... ?" with the blank filled with a task that seems far less difficult.

Armstrong's small step was that leap in confidence telling the world "if we can do this, we can do anything," said Howard McCurdy, a professor of space and public policy at American University and author of the book "Space and the American Imagination."

"He took something that 20 years earlier was pure fantasy and turned it into reality and if we could do that for space we could do it for anything," McCurdy said Saturday.

The Apollo 11 moon landing was the finish line in a decade-long space race started by the Soviet Union. And so the first steps on the moon coming from an American civilian had many meanings. Getting there first showed American technological superiority, but Armstrong mentioned mankind ? not Americans ? demonstrating that this was a moment for the people of Earth, McCurdy said.

Armstrong and Aldrin left a plaque on the moon that read:? "Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the moon. July 1969 A.D. We came in peace for all mankind."

For all mankind. And that's how the world took it.

"The success for America (is a) success for every living man" reported the Swahili-language newspaper Nguromo of Dar.

And if that wasn't enough, Armstrong and Aldrin also left a patch to commemorate NASA astronauts and Soviet cosmonauts who had died in pursuit of space.

"It was special and memorable but it was only instantaneous because there was work to do," Armstrong told an Australian television interviewer this year.

The Cold War may have slightly muted the significance of the event at the time, but over the years the importance of the moon landing has only grown, Logsdon said.

It's permeated into culture. The moon landing is in movies, television, books, songs and it was even Michael Jackson's signature dance step. That's probably because in some ways that moonwalk touched something that has been hard-wired into humanity: the need to explore. For 25,000 years, humans have been migrating and pushing into new places. Armstrong took it to new heights.

John Glenn, the first American to orbit the Earth, noted it was "the first time any human being set foot on a place other than Earth, and that's a pretty big step."
