Work hazards worse for temp employees

America?s 2.5 million temporary, or contingent, workers ? a growing but mostly invisible group of laborers who often toil in the least desirable, most dangerous jobs ? are hurt more frequently than permanent employees, new research shows.

Fujifilm X100s digital split image display demoed video

Just as Fujifilm is getting under way with its CES 2013 press conference, the folks over at FujiRumors found some footage of Fujifilm's new digital split image display from the newly announced X100s. Earlier this week, the company announced this new way of manual focusing on the X100s, in which the user overlays two images to attain proper focus of an image. This feature seems to hit a high note for range finder camera users as it brings a certain familiarity for focusing work flow. Note that the display in the video is the rear LCD of the camera and not the prized hybrid viewfinder. Overall the movement looks smooth and usable, but we'll confirm when we get our hands on the new X100s.

check out the video after the break.

Kelly wants Notre Dame keeping bar at title height

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) ? Win or lose, Notre Dame's Brian Kelly doesn't want his team aiming any lower than the national championship game in the future.

Kelly said Sunday "it's unacceptable for the standard to be any less than being back here again." First things first, his top-ranked Fighting Irish will face No. 2 Alabama Monday night hoping for their first national title since 1988.

Kelly has been in national title games before. He led Division II Grand Valley State to championships in 2002 and 2003. For the last one, the team stayed mostly unnoticed in a Best Western and there was so much less buildup that it "was just another game."

He says "it's a totally different feeling for this one."

As for his pregame message, Kelly says he typically goes 80 percent by what he senses from his team.

One-third of U.S. consumers plan to buy a new ... - Health Populi

Fitness Tech Buyers Looking to Price, Quality CES Survey 2013Over one-third of U.S. consumers plan to buy a new fitness technology in the next year, especially women. They?ll buy these at mass merchants (females in particular, shopping at Target and Walmart), sporting goods retailers (more male buyers here), online and at electronics stores like Best Buy. These potential buyers consider themselves in good or excellent physical health. They?ll see the latest applications on retail store shelves in pedometers, calorie trackers, fitness video games, digital weight scales, and heart rate monitors that will be launched this week at the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

In advance of the CES, the CEA published Getting Connecting with Emerging Fitness Technologies, a survey conducted by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) just-in-time to launch the Digital Health Summit at the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show.

Some of the top line findings are that:

  • One-half of online U.S. consumers have used a fitness technology in the past year, growing from 47% in 2011 to 56% in 2012.
  • Most people intending to buy a new piece of fitness technology in the next year are in excellent or good health, together 90% of people planning to buy devices.
  • 4 in 5 people using fitness technologies are highly satisfied with these devices, leading people to consider acquiring more such devices.
  • The most important product features for fitness tech?s are functionality (88%), quality (87%), ease of use (87%), durability (87%), and price (86%).

Most Americans say they engage in at least 10 minutes of leisure-time physical activity every week, ranging from walking (by 74% of people) and housework (59%), to gardening and yard work (32%), strength training/weights (23%), running/jogging (20%), cardio via machine (19%), cycling (18%) and exercise videos (15%), among other activities such as yoga/pilates (11%), dancing (11%), and swimming (9%). The most popular places to exercise are home (by 72%), outside (49%), and at a health club/gym (18%). The average duration of exercise is 43 minutes for both light/moderate and vigorous exercise routines. Among online U.S. adults who are physically active according to the ?10 minutes a week? definition, only 1 in 10 is getting enough light or moderate exercise; but, 63% are getting enough vigorous exercise according to the American Heart Association guidelines (which suggest engaging in 30 minutes of moderate exercise 5 times a week, or 25 minutes of vigorous activity 3 days a week).

Why do people exercise? Improving health is the #1 reason, for 76%, followed by looking better (56%), losing weight and reducing BMI (58%), reducing stress (52%), and building muscle/strength (43%). Doctor?s recommendation as motivation for exercise was cite by 18% of people, dropping from 23% in the 2010 survey.

Why don?t people exercise? It?s lack of motivation for one-half of people, and ?health problem? for 26%.

Tracking has become increasingly popular among U.S. adults who exercise. The most commonly tracked fitness measurements are, on a yearly basis:

  • Weight, 84% of active online U.S. consumers
  • Amount of physical activity, 57%
  • Progress toward fitness goal, 51%
  • Heart rate, 48%
  • Calories consumed, 47%
  • Calories burned, 43%
  • Body fat, 37%
  • Metabolic rate, 28%.

While 55% of online U.S. consumers used a fitness tech in the past year, up from 47% in 2010, there are demographic differences across users. More women than men use them, and while more people in the youngest age cohort (18-34) have used fitness techs, there was fast-growth among older adults, up to 55% of whom used a fitness device in the past year.

Pedometers, by far, are the most common fitness device, owned by 31% of U.S. online adults. Fitness video games (18%), portable blood pressure monitors (16%), digital weight scales with body composition metrics (e.g., BMI, by 12%), and heart rate monitors (12%) are the most popular fitness techs in the U.S. Frequency of use of fitness techs has increased since 2010: one-third (32%) of people who use fitness techs in 2010 use them daily versus 26% in 2010.

Over two-thirds of U.S. online smartphone owners have not synced their fitness device to their smartphone; 76% of those with a tablet haven?t synched their device to their tablet. Those who sync tend to be younger people. Most syncing happens during exercise while using the device, or immediately after exercising.

For this survey, the CEA polled a national sample of 1,516 online adults in November 2012.

Health Populi?s Hot Points:?It appears that more people are demanding ? that is, intending to purchase with their own out-of-pocket dollars ? fitness technologies in 2013. This is more evidence of the growing healthcareDIY movement, where people are morphing into health consumers and taking on more responsibility for co-creating their health. If buying a digital pedometer that motivates self-tracking and sustained behavior change means more walking, then look for America?s waistline to shrink as BMIs fall.

Note, though, that it?s people who see themselves are already-fit and in at least good health who mostly intend to purchase fitness devices. While I?m all for bolstering health, and seeing healthy people stay well, that?s not where the burden of chronic disease is. And that?s what consumers 75-80% of U.S. health care costs. It?s real money in the form of about $2 trillion (yes, that?s a ?t?) dollars annually.

Where we can close the circle is in Connected Health, where the data collected by these fitness devices get synced not only with ?my? computer/tablet/phone but with my medical home?s electronic health record. In marrying up the Observations of Daily Living (ODLs) to clinical data in our EHRs, our clinicians, health coaches, diabetes educators and caregivers can work with us to co-create health ? to move the needle on our lab data so that diabetes and heart disease can be managed, keeping us out of ERs, ORs and inpatient hospital beds and safe and well at home and working.

But most people using fitness devices aren?t even syncing yet with their smartphones or computers. So while the CEA report is titled, ?Getting Connected,? we?d best remember how we?re doing so: not much yet, and when we are, we?re getting connected to our own devices.

Still, the changes in the 2012 data show promising movement forward since 2010. This week at the CES, I?ll be reporting from the convention floor and in informative panels where I?ll share with you the latest new consumer-facing health devices and wisdom from people like Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Dr. Oz, Deepak Chopra, et. al. Stay tuned to Health Populi this week for these updates?and stay well!

Dog Days of Winter: Keeping Pets Safe, Warm - Drugs.com MedNews

SATURDAY Jan. 5, 2013 -- With the arrival of winter, dog owners need to be aware of how to keep their canine friends comfortable and safe, an expert says.

"A general rule of thumb is if it is too cold for you outside, it is too cold for your dog," Susan Nelson, a clinical associate professor and veterinarian at the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine's Pet Health Center, said in a university news release.

Several factors, such as size, help some dogs tolerate the cold better than others.

"Small stature and short coats, such as with a Chihuahua, make dogs less tolerant of cold weather. Some of these dogs may not even tolerate cooler temperatures that are still above freezing for very long," Nelson said.

"Larger body mass and longer, plusher coats allow dogs to tolerate lower temperatures for a longer duration -- think Siberian husky," she added.

Giving your dog enough time to get used to colder temperatures is a good idea. Being exposed to a gradual reduction in temperature allows your dog to develop a protective winter coat and adjust to the colder conditions.

While coats, sweaters and boots can give dogs added protection, they also have some disadvantages, Nelson said.

"Watch for choking hazards, such as buttons, on coats and sweaters," she advised. "Ensure they are made of breathable fabrics and that the fabric doesn't irritate the dog. They should only be worn when supervised as the dog could get caught up in them. Also, if the apparel gets wet, it can promote hypothermia that results from chilling caused from the body being in contact with the cold, wet fabric."

Boots can keep snow and ice away from paws, but owners need to make sure they fit correctly, can be put on easily and stay on, and have good traction, Nelson said.

Texans, Bengals Meet in Wild Card Game Again

HOUSTON (AP) ? The Houston Texans were looking forward to enjoying a bye this week before beginning their work in the playoffs as the AFC's top seed.

Instead, a terrible month in which they lost three of four games dropped the Texans to the third seed. It has them in the exact same spot as year ago, hosting the Cincinnati Bengals in a wild-card playoff game Saturday.

The Texans wasted little time this week lamenting their missed opportunities, though, instead focusing on their next task.

"Would we like to be in a different situation? Yeah, but at the same time, it's the playoffs. It's the start of the playoffs. Everything you've done up to this point, it doesn't really matter," Houston's Andre Johnson said. "It only matters what you do now ... we just have to take advantage of the opportunity we have now."

They'll face a Cincinnati team that enters Saturday having won three in a row and seven of its last eight games. The Bengals are in the playoffs for consecutive seasons for the first time since 1981-82. Their last playoff win came Jan. 6, 1991 against the Oilers, the team the Texans replaced in Houston.

Cincinnati offensive tackle Andrew Whitworth said he isn't worried about the more than 20-year streak of playoff futility. He wants to focus on the improvement this young team has made.

"Last year, we did what it took to get into the playoffs when a lot of people predicted us to be 0-16," Whitworth said. "This year, we got back in to the playoffs when a lot of people didn't think we could. We're here. The next step is winning a playoff game. Hopefully, we can let that be a chip on our shoulder."

Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton was sacked four times and threw three interceptions in last year's 31-10 postseason loss to the Texans. Houston defensive end J.J. Watt returned one of those interceptions 29 yards for a touchdown that gave the Texans a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Dalton, who grew up in suburban Houston, believes he's grown since that game and learned from the mistakes he made.

"I definitely feel like I'm a better quarterback this year," he said. "I've got more control of the offense. There's a lot more stuff that I'm doing at the line of scrimmage, and making checks and doing different things this year than I was doing last year. But that's helped me become a better player."

Another player who has certainly improved in Year 2 is Watt. The defensive end led the NFL with 20 ? sacks this season, has 107 tackles, including 39 for losses, 16 passes defended and has forced four fumbles.

Bengals coach Marvin Lewis got creative this week when asked how he planned to stop Watt.

"I wrote a letter to the commissioner to petition for 13," Lewis joked. "I figure if we put a guy on each side of him and a guy in front of him, we've got a good opportunity."

Then Lewis got serious.

"He's been an incredible player and he's fun to watch if you're not preparing to play the Texans," Lewis said. "He's a great model for young players to look at and be like. He really is something."

Houston defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, who has been coaching in the NFL since 1976, couldn't say enough about Watt's performance this season.

"This is the best defensive line play of anybody since I've been in football," Phillips said. "He is by far the best defensive player. He should obviously be the defensive player of the year in the league."

The AFC South champion Texans are also in the playoffs for the second straight year, the only two times in franchise history. Houston lost to the Ravens in the second round after beating the Bengals last January.

The Texans believe that experience will help them this time.

"I feel like we've come a long ways," Watt said. "Obviously, this isn't new to us. This is something we've been through before. We're excited. We can't wait. We had a taste of the playoffs last year and we're really excited to get back in it this year and to go to work."

Third-string quarterback T.J. Yates was behind center last year after injuries knocked out Matt Schaub and Matt Leinart. Now, Schaub, a nine-year veteran, will get his first postseason start.

He's looking to bounce back from a tough month in which he threw three interceptions with just one touchdown pass. He'll try to do it with two big weapons in Johnson and Arian Foster. Johnson led the AFC with a career-high 1,598 yards receiving, and Foster finished second in the AFC in rushing with 1,424 yards.

"They have three or four guys who have been playmakers in this league for a while," Bengals cornerback Leon Hall said of the Texans. "It starts with Foster. Obviously, they have Johnson outside. It starts with knowing that we have to stop the run. If you don't stop the run, you're on your heels for the rest of the game."

Schaub and Houston's offensive line will have their hands full with a defense that boasts two solid pass-rushers in tackle Geno Atkins and end Michael Johnson. The pair has combined for 24 sacks this season, and the Texans have given up three or more sacks in each of the last three games.

"Pressure and those types of things, we have our work cut out for us," coach Gary Kubiak said. "We're going to have to play better than we have the past few weeks."

Liquipel 2.0 nanocoating debuts with improved water protection, matches IPX7 and beyond (video)

Liquipel 20 nanocoating debuts with improved water protection, corrosion resistance and durability

We were rather stoked when Liquipel brought its "watersafe" nanocoating service from California to South East Asia in fall 2012, but it turns out that the Santa Ana-based company had another surprise lined up for us later on. At Startup Debut 2013 in Las Vegas today we saw the announcement of Liquipel 2.0, which claims to have "significant advancements in durability, corrosion resistance and water protection" than its predecessor. Specifically, the new version is "up to 100 times more effective... while maintaining component integrity and RF sensitivity." Obviously we had to see it to believe it, and to our surprise, this time Liquipel had a demo that let us submerge a 2.0-coated iPhone 5 under two feet of water -- you can see us going bonkers with it in the video after the break.

According to Managing Director Sam Winkler, a device thoroughly treated with Liquipel 2.0 can actually achieve a liquid protection rating of at least IPX7: immersion at a depth of 1m for 30 minutes. While the iPhone 5 we tortured did eventually take in too much water and thus disabled the touch panel, it quickly came back to life after we shook off some of the water. Winkler added that his company's now offering its 4ft x 4ft "Liquipods" for shops that want to provide the Liquipel treatment themselves, but it'll be a while before all existing partners -- mostly outside the US -- can be upgraded to 2.0. That said, interested customers can already get the 2.0 treatment in the US.

One final note: it turns out that Jaybird also uses Liquipel during the assembly of its sports headphones. Hopefully we'll see more products treated with the same goodness in the near future.
