Grenade kills policeman, wounds dozens as Kenya riots rage

Angry youths killed a Kenyan policeman and wounded over a dozen others in a grenade attack Tuesday, as riots rocked the city of Mombasa for a second day after the killing of a radical Islamist cleric.

The attack on a police truck came as officers tried to contain protests by hundreds of angry youths who threw stones, damaged cars and chanted slogans in support of slain preacher Aboud Rogo Mohammed.

Foreign embassies -- including those of Australia, Britain and France -- issued travel warnings for Mombasa, a key tourist hub and Kenya's main port.

The cleric -- popularly known as Rogo -- was on US and UN sanctions lists for allegedly supporting Somalia's Al-Qaeda-linked Shebab militants.

He was killed Monday in Mombasa when unidentified gunmen opened fire on his vehicle as he was driving with his wife and children, leaving it riddled with bullets.

Images released by his supporters showed his bloody corpse slumped behind the wheel. His wife and children reportedly survived the attack.

Furious protests erupted after his death, with one person hacked to death, cars torched, businesses attacked and five churches looted or set on fire.

As the rioting stretched into a second day Tuesday, the Shebab called on Kenyan Muslims to "take all necessary measures" to defend their religion.

"Muslims must take the matter into their own hands, stand united against the kuffar (unbelievers) and take all necessary measures to protect their religion, their honour, their property and their lives from the enemies of Islam," the Islamist group said in a statement.

Staff in Mombasa's main hospital reported Tuesday that at least 14 people had been injured in the clashes, while two anti-riot police were also wounded apart from those hit by the grenade attack, police said.

The Supreme Council of Muslims in Kenya condemned the violence, especially the targeting of churches.

"This kind of violence goes against our faith. The protesters shouldn't hide behind Islam or any of its teachings," said the council's secretary general, Adan Wachu. "These are criminals and should be treated as such."

Rogo was the spiritual leader of the Muslim Youth Center (MYC), a group viewed as a close ally of the extremist Shebab.

The Islamist MYC blamed the authorities for what they called a "targeted assassination", but police have dismissed the claim and say they are hunting the killers.

"Our beloved Sheikh Aboud Rogo... was murdered by the (unbelievers) as part of Kenya's policy of extra-judicial killings against prominent Muslim activists," the MYC said Tuesday in a statement.

Police in turn blamed the killing on the Shebab, with police spokesman Charles Owino saying the group had sought "to galvanise support among the youth".

"Rogo's murder was a well-planned attack by members of Al-Shebab to gain sympathisers.... The Shebab have failed to get followers," Owino told AFP.

The preacher was placed on a US sanctions list in July for "engaging in acts that directly or indirectly threaten the peace, security or stability of Somalia", specifically for recruiting and fundraising for the Shebab.

The United Nations Security Council placed a travel ban and asset freeze on him in July, saying he had provided "financial, material, logistical or technical support to Al-Shebab".

Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Monday condemned Rogo's "horrific" murder, adding the government was "committed to bringing whoever was responsible to justice".

Rogo had been accused by the UN of using the MYC group as "a pathway for radicalisation and recruitment of principally Swahili-speaking Africans for carrying out violent militant activity in Somalia."

The cleric is also alleged to have introduced Fazul Abdullah Mohammed -- the late head of Al-Qaeda's east Africa cell, shot dead last year in Somalia's war-torn capital Mogadishu -- to at least one of the men who helped him carry out the twin US embassy bombings in 1998.

The bombings in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam killed 224 people.

The last vacation you'll ever take

So, my idea is pretty simple but it could be fun.

You will all be playing as customers or staff on a cruise ship set out from Key Largo on a round trip voyage around the world with multiple stops at some of the world's most popular vacation places. Somewhere along the line, a beast of unknown nature sneaks aboard, be it a Vampire stowing away, a newly infected werewolf returning to their voyage, or some other type of creature?

So like I said, it's pretty simple. But the good news for you is, on top of accepting player applications, I'm also accepting monster suggestions. Anyone who can suggest a monster that I like the most for this will get to play it as a character.

Eh? Ehhh?

Micky Dolenz 'torn' over song in 'Breaking Bad'

By Shirley Halperin, The Hollywood Reporter

Dave J Hogan / Getty Images

Here?s a combination you probably never imagined coming together on television: beloved '60s pop-rock group The Monkees and many pounds of crystal meth.

Leave it to "Breaking Bad"?creator?Vince Gilligan?and the show?s music team to pair a montage of chemistry in action with the song ?Goin? Down,? the B-side to The Monkees' 1967 hit ?Daydream Believer.?

Spoiler alert: The scene was a key moment during Sunday?s episode, when Walter White (Bryan Cranston) essentially passed the torch to new prot?g? Todd (Jesse Plemons) in an all-night cook. The double-time, kick-in-the-step vocal styling of singer?Micky Dolenz?served as the soundtrack, and an unlikely one at that ??yet, strangely, it worked.

PHOTOS:?The Beatles to The Wanted: The Evolution of Boy Bands?

The sync lit up Twitter?s music-centric community and had the ?Monkee-net abuzz,? Dolenz, who sings ?Goin? Down,? tells? The Hollywood Reporter. Although the singer and drummer was on the road with?his solo show, he found out about the music cue almost instantly via the group?s Facebook fans. ?It?s one of my favorite Monkees songs,? he says. ?Great lyrics by the band and?Diane Hilderbrand. ? A very smart call.?

As it turns out, Dolenz is a fan of the AMC series, and for that reason, he says he?s ?a little torn? about the song?s use in the scene. " 'Goin? Down' has nothing to do with drugs, obviously," he tells?THR. ?And I certainly don't condone meth ??that is nasty stuff that kills a lot of people and ruins a lot of lives. ... On the other hand, I like the TV show, it's very well-made. ? And no, I didn't make a penny.?

Indeed, Dolenz won?t see much if any financial reward to the song?s use. Formed in concept as a made-for-TV group, at least originally, The Monkees' individual members forfeited rights to their recordings and image, which is one reason the band wasn?t informed of the placement ahead of time or asked for a sign-off.

VIDEO:?Davy Jones' Death: 5 Iconic Monkees Moments

?The record company controls the licensing and mechanicals for all the material that you do,? Dolenz explains. ?In movies and TV they don't even have to ask, unless you wrote the song. Like I had no idea ?I'm a Believer? was going to be in 'Shrek.' "

While the long-haired, beads-wearing and paisley-sporting Monkees were no strangers to an affiliation with psychedelics and marijuana (?I smoked my fair share,? Dolenz readily admits), the group?s co-founder insists creative endeavors like their 1968 movie "Head," written by?Bob Rafelson?and?Jack Nicholson, had a greater purpose than simply being an accompaniment to mind-altering drugs. ? 'Head'?was more about the deconstruction of the Hollywood big movie studio monopoly, using the Monkees metaphorically for attacking that system,? he says. ?It had more to do with the cerebral element.? That and leaving the door open for a second movie, so that the makers could say ?from the producers who gave you 'Head.' ?

Adds Dolenz, ?Like they say, any publicity is good publicity ??just spell the name right.? That?s Micky with no E.

Watch the "Breaking Bad"?season finale this Sunday and listen to a remastered version of The Monkees' ?Goin? Down? below:

Building Your Custom Dream Home | The NH Blog

Turn Your Dream Into Reality

We?ve all thought about what our dream home would be like. Imagine yours. Can you see the front of your house? Is there are charming red door or a blue one? Are there two doors? Can you see the lamp post in your front yard? When you custom build a home, you have the complete satisfaction of knowing that you?re designing your dream home exactly the way you like it. You?ll enjoy every brick and every cornerstone because you intended it to be that way.

Unfortunately it can be a lot more expensive to build your own home than you initially thought. If it?s important to you to design your own home, then it?s worth taking the time to save up for the build. It also requires a lot more planning than buying a house. You are the primary decision maker. You choose every tile, fixture, color, siding, and addition. So do your research and keep all of your plans organized from the beginning. Here are a few things you should consider before you begin designing your dream home:

  1. Location. Where are you planning to live? Would you like to be in a remote area near the woods further away from your neighbors? Would you like to be right next to them? Consider the school district, the crime rate, and environmental factors. Remember, this is where you will reside for the foreseeable future.
  2. Wish List. Before starting the process of building your home, make a list of the things you want and don?t want in the house. Perhaps you don?t want a two-story house if you have elderly relatives. Maybe you want a pool. Do you do a lot of cooking? Perhaps a double-oven is a need. Make sure you cover your details before moving into the bigger picture.
  3. Home Size. If you have a family of six, you?ll probably want a house with several bedrooms. If it?s just you and a spouse, maybe a small cozy cottage is enough. Be sure to think long-term. If you anticipate expanding your family, having elderly relatives moving in with you, or entertaining a lot of guests. In summary: design your house to fit all of your lifestyle needs, now and in the future.
  4. Expert Help or DIY. You might consider yourself somewhat handy around the house, but are you skilled enough to construct your own home? Understand your limitations. You may have to seek expert help and hire a contractor. If you do your due diligence, you can find an affordable one that will fit your budget in your local area. Be sure you?re choosing an accredited and licensed contractor. Take the time to visit several open houses and study the various designs. Take as many pictures as you can. This can inspire you to be creative and will help you develop an overall design theme for your home. Plus, it helps the builders visualize what your dream home is intended to be and make it a reality.

(AP) ? Kim Kardashian has settled a lawsuit against Old Navy claiming the clothing retailer violated her publicity rights by using a lookalike in an ad.

Kardashian sued over the spot in July 2011, claiming the company's use of a model who looked like her might confuse consumers about her actual endorsements, which include a clothing store and shoe line.

No details about the settlement were filed with the court.

"The lawsuit was resolved to the mutual satisfaction of the parties," said the reality TV starlet's attorney Gary Hecker, who declined to elaborate.

A spokesperson for Old Navy parent company The Gap Inc. was not immediately available.

The lawsuit was over the commercial titled "Super C-U-T-E." The ad began airing in February 2011 and was still being used in some of the company's promotions months later, Kardashian's lawsuit stated.

It featured Canadian singer-model Melissa Molinaro, who an attorney for Old Navy said at a January hearing was famous in her own right. Her appearance in the ad wasn't intended to draw similarities to Kardashian, the retailer maintained.

Hecker contended that some news outlets and Twitter users noted similarities in the women's appearances.

Kardashian, 31, was seeking unspecified damages and an order barring Old Navy from using a lookalike model again.

Ant-inspired Internet - the 'Anternet' - may be coming soon

1 day

Ants get stuff done without anyone in control. Understanding how they do what they do could help us design more robust and efficient networks, according to a biologist who studies ant colony behavior.

A recent study shows that harvester ants, for example, regulate how many ants are out searching for food in a way that resembles how Internet protocols regulate the amount of data being transferred according to the amount of available bandwidth.?

The protocol, called the Transmission Control Protocol, sends out packets of data and waits until it receives an acknowledgement that the packet was received before sending out more packets.

An acknowledgement that comes back slower than the data was sent is a sign of traffic congestion, so the data source scales back its rate of data transmission. If the acknowledgment comes back faster than it was sent, the reverse is true and the data transfer speed is increased.

Harvester ants behave the same way when searching for food. The rate at which foragers leave the nest to look for seeds corresponds to the rate at which ants return and thus to food availability, according to Deborah Gordon, a biologist at Stanford University in California.

Individual ants try not to return to the nest empty-handed. When seeds are plentiful, the foragers return quickly, meaning more ants will leave the nest to find food. If they return slowly, the system is throttled down.

Gordon?s colleague, Balaji Prabhakar, a professor of computer science at Stanford, made the connection between the ant behavior and the way the Internet protocol works. They published their findings on the so-called "anternet"?in the Aug. 23 issue of PLoS Computational Biology.?

In this case, humans designed an algorithm to solve a traffic congestion problem on the Internet before they found the solution in an ant colony.

If we study the ants first, ?we are likely to learn about some new solutions to large-scale network problems,? Gordon told me Monday.?

This may be particularly true, she said, as the Internet becomes larger and unwieldy and expensive to operate as more and more data is moved to the cloud.

?We already know that ants are good at a particular kind of problem that we are trying to solve,? she said. ?That is, how to operate systems with lots of information and moving around complicated pathways and no central control.?

One solution to operating more complex networks may be the introduction of randomness into the system, as ant colonies do.

?It will still work well enough and it?s a lot cheaper and more effective than trying to [specify everything centrally], so you can actually use less information to get the same result,? she explained in a follow up email.

Doing that means accepting that a certain level of randomness is helpful to the functioning of a system, not damaging.

?That?s what the ants can teach us. They have ways of [organizing networks] that use more randomness and more redundancy,? Gordon said.

How (and why) you should enable two-step verification on your Dropbox account

20 hrs.

After some security woes, the folks at Dropbox have finally made two-step verification available to their users. Here's what that means, why it's important?and how to use it.

Two-step (or two-factor) verification means that logging into an account?requires two proofs of identity ? typically a password and a temporary code sent to a cellphone or generated by an app.?This process keeps?your account safe even if your password is somehow compromised (or if the cellphone which receives the temporary codes is misplaced). Without both items, it's not possible to log into the account.

In order to enable two-step verification on your Dropbox account, you'll need to sign into the Dropbox website and open your account menu (by clicking on your name, in the upper-right corner). Once in there,?open the settings and click on the "security" tab. In the "account sign in" section, you'll find the option to turn on two-step verification.?You'll be asked to enter your Dropbox password and then get the option of receiving your temporary security codes via text message or by using a mobile app. You'll also be prompted to write down a?backup code, which you should keep somewhere safe?? so that you have it in case your phone ever disappears.

And that's it. After you've gone through these steps, you'll use your password and a temporary security code to log into Dropbox. And you'll rest easily, knowing that your account is far more secure.

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.
