New Obama ad makes middle-class appeal

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ? President Barack Obama's campaign is running a new television ad claiming Republican Mitt Romney's policies would "hit the middle class harder."

The ad says Romney wants to extend tax cuts for millionaires at the expense of middle-income earners.

Romney has called for an extension of tax cuts first approved by George W. Bush for all income earners. Obama wants to let the cuts expire at the end of the year for families making more than $250,000 a year.

The ad says Romney doesn't see the "heavy load" the middle class is carrying.

The new spot is airing as Democrats open their party convention, where they'll focus on Obama's economic plans for the middle class.

The ad is running in Colorado, Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, Ohio and Virginia, key battleground states.

Finding Children Forever Homes: LGBT Foster & Adoptive Families ...

foreverhomes.jpgIn an ideal world, every child would be born into a loving stable family, yet the reality is that many children are not. For the more than 400,000 children living in foster care, the goal is to establish safety and permanency with family members or to find adoptive families to provide "forever" homes. Unfortunately, LGBT families who wish to foster and adopt are often barred from doing so by archaic and discriminatory laws, policies or practices. This need not be the case.

Finding Children Forever Homes: LGBT Foster & Adoptive Families highlights the compelling need to find adoptive families for waiting children, provides an overview of the barriers faced by LGBT families wishing to foster and adopt, and includes targeted recommendations designed to ensure that LGBT families can help fill the need for loving, stable foster and adoptive homes for children.

The brief, which is based on content from All Children Matter: How Legal and Social Inequalities Hurt LGBT Families, was produced in partnership with the the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the Human Rights Campaign (HRC). Both reports were co-authored by the Movement Advancement Project (MAP), the Family Equality Council and the Center for American Progress.

Jamboree-on-the-Air (JOTA) ? October 20th - San Antonio Area Hams

This year?s JOTA event in San Antonio will be held at McGimsey Scout Park in Castle Hills, near Northwest Military @ Lockhill Selma.? Members from the San Antonio Radio Club, Alamo Area Radio Organization and others will be setup for a one day event, Saturday October 20th, from around 8am til 5pm ??, helping Scouts get on the Ham Radio and showing them our hobby.

The Jamboree-on-the-Air, or JOTA, is an annual Scouting event that uses amateur radio to link Scouts around the world, around the nation, and in your own community.

Held on the third full weekend of October each year, this worldwide jamboree requires no travel, other than to a nearby radio amateur?s ham shack. Many times the hams will come to you by setting up at a Scout camporee, or perhaps they already have a ham shack at your council?s camp.

Tell Me More

Scouts of any age can participate, from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts and Venturers. Once at the ham radio station, the communication typically requires speaking into a microphone and listening on the station speakers. However, many forms of specialized communication can also take place, such as video communication, digital communication using typed words on the computer screen transmitted by radio, communication through a satellite relay or an earth-based relay (called a repeater), and many others. The exchanges include such information as name, location (called QTH in ham speak), Scout rank, age, and hobbies. The stations you?ll be communicating with can be other Scouts across town, across the country, or even around the world! The World Scout Bureau reported that the 2011 JOTA had nesrly 750,000 Scout participants from over 6,000 amateur radio stations! A participant patch is available, as is a certificate/log sheet that can also be used to fulfill a Radio merit badge requirement.

When Is It?

The 55th Jamboree-on-the-Air is October 20?21, 2012, but in San Antonio, our event will be Saturday only. The official hours are from Saturday at 00:00 hours local time (right at midnight Friday) to Sunday 24:00 (midnight Sunday evening). So you?ve got the whole weekend to make JOTA contacts.? Even if you aren?t able to help out in person, locally, get on the air and be there when other Scouts around the world are looking for folks to talk with, especially if you are a female ham radio operator!? They love to talk with the girls!? Hmm, wonder why that might be?? LOL

Gay marriage advocates, stop throwing poly people under the bus ...

I?ve said before that I?m conflicted about same sex marriage, because, ultimately, I?d rather see the institution as a whole abolished. On the whole, though, I?ve got no problem with same sex marriage as a transitional demand and have no problem with people choosing to get the state involved in their two-person relationships.

The thing is, I am very unhappy with how some people are asking for this. They?ll argue against the ?slippery slope? argument by throwing poly people under the bus. ?No, we?re only asking for two people in love to get married, not poly or incest or bestiality. You silly conservatives, thinking you?d catch us out,? they say.

Now, I understand that they?re fighting against a daft argument in the first place. The thing is, this riposte is fairly fucking offensive to poly people.

Firstly, it kind of sucks to get mentioned in the same breath as incest and bestiality. These things are not the same, and personally I find them rather squicky. But, more importantly, these things are not the same, and I?d rather they weren?t all lumped together, unless you?re in consensual polyamorous relationship with your brother and a very enthusiastically randy shih-tzu.

Secondly, polygamy is always, always, always conflated with polyamory. Again, these things are not the same: polygamy refers to a specific type of multiple-partner relationship which is a subtype of polyamory. It?s a set-up which is generally steeped in religion and bad gender politics and is therefore easier to dismiss than other types of poly relationship. However, by not pointing out that this is only one multiple-partner arrangement, one throws all poly people under that bus.

Now, there might be more harms inherent in polygamous relationships than there are in other forms of poly, due to its ties with religion and patriarchy. However, there are more harms inherent to certain types of any sort of relationships. Should we ban marriages where there?s a significant age difference? What about where one partner has a record for domestic violence? Of course not, that?d be bloody silly. So why are the gay marriage advocates throwing all poly people under the bus because some?relationships are fucked up?

Then there?s the nicer, more watered-down argument. That marriages including more than two people would be?too hard,?that poly marriages would be more of a redefinition of marriage than same-sex marriage. Now, this is all well and good, except same-sex marriage also involves a redefinition, and that?s exactly where the struggle lies. In my opinion, we might as well go the whole hog while we?re doing this (if we?re not just going to abolish the whole archaic institution). The thing is, I?m not asking that they make our struggle a part of theirs. I?m just asking not to get chucked under the bus in the process.

And it?s entirely possible to refute the slippery slope argument without throwing anyone under the bus. This widely-circulated infographic does so fairly adeptly. Because, yes, that?s all same-sex marriage will lead to: gay people getting married. Depending on your politics, that may or may not be enough, but either way, pointing out that simple fact and nothing else will expose the underlying bigotry in the anti-SSM camp. All ethical issues aside, throwing poly people under the bus derails this very simple and powerful point.

So I plead with the gay marriage advocates: stop throwing us under the bus to get what you want.

Poll: Obama, Romney tied as Democrats go into convention

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama enters an important campaign week tied with Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, a Reuters/Ipsos poll found on Sunday, leaving the incumbent an opportunity to edge ahead of his opponent at the Democratic National Convention.

With the Democrats set to nominate Obama for a second term this week in Charlotte, North Carolina, the race to the presidential election on November 6 is tight with 45 percent for Obama and 45 percent for Romney among likely voters, the survey found.

The findings were from the seventh day of a rolling online poll conducted for Reuters by Ipsos to judge voters' attitudes around the political conventions.

Obama campaigned in Boulder, Colorado, the state where he accepted the Democratic presidential nomination four years ago, while Romney was off the campaign trail in New Hampshire, about to begin preparations for three debates with Obama in October.

The Democrat is seeking to generate the same kind of enthusiasm that propelled him to the White House in 2008, a task that is much more difficult this time with Americans struggling under 8.3 percent unemployment.

While White House aides said on Sunday television talk shows that Obama would offer an economic path forward when he gives his acceptance speech this week, in Boulder he was still on the attack against Romney, criticizing the Republican National Convention in Tampa last week.

"Everything you heard from them ... you have heard before," the president told a large and supportive crowd at the University of Colorado. "They have tried to sell us this tired trickle-down, you're-on-your-own snake oil before," Obama said.

Obama's challenge is to show why four more years of his presidency would be better for the U.S. economy than his first term has been. His aides struggled to answer the question on Sunday, as to whether Americans are better off now than they were four years ago.

"We've made a lot of progress from the depths of recession. We have a lot more work to do," said White House adviser David Plouffe on ABC's "This Week."

Democrats argued that Obama inherited a bad economy from Republican President George W. Bush.

"What's happened since an election in 2008 and right now, again, is this huge economic calamity caused by a series of bad decisions that were made before the president ever got there," Obama campaign senior adviser Robert Gibbs said on CNN's "State of the Union. "This election was always going to be close because we live in a closely divided country."

A week ago, a Reuters/Ipsos poll said Obama led Romney 46 percent to 42 percent. The Republican's own convention gave him a small boost, vaulting him into an even position with Obama but no further.

Now Obama, who is to accept the nomination on Thursday, could get his own convention bounce. Ipsos pollster Julia Clark said Obama's numbers would likely improve during his convention.

"The fact that Obama and Romney are still tied signals to me that we're not going to see any sort of sustained bump for Romney," Clark said. "As we go into next week's convention, Romney will struggle to maintain even footing with the president - we'll likely see a shift back towards Obama."

While each candidate won overwhelming support from voters in his own political party, Romney was leading Obama among all-important independent voters by 33 percent to 28 percent, the poll found.

Romney's improvement on key attributes continued on an upward trajectory in the poll. On such issues as he "represents America," "is a good person," and "is eloquent," Romney was essentially tied with Obama. On who is more likable, Romney had improved but still trailed Obama 32 percent to 48 percent, the poll found.

ROMNEY SEEN AS MORE PERSONABLE

Republicans used their convention to play up the former private equity executive's family and personal life.

In Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, Mormon churchgoers at a service attended by Romney on Sunday thanked the former Massachusetts governor for raising the church's profile in his race for the White House and praised his nomination acceptance speech.

Romney, who would be the first Mormon president if he wins the election, sat smiling with his wife, Ann, as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints lauded his performance at the convention.

"To be honest the convention was pretty good for Romney," said Clark. "I think one of the big tests of the Republican convention was to make him more of a human, make him a little more personable, make him more likable. I think they succeeded there."

There has been no real movement in terms of candidate perceptions on any substantive policy areas such as healthcare, or even on which candidate is better in protecting American jobs. This underlines the notion that conventions are about style rather than substance, Clark said.

The poll suggested voters are waiting to hear what Obama has to say about the most pressing issue of the campaign, the U.S. economy.

Seventy-six percent of Americans believe the country is on the wrong track and 73 percent have a similar belief about jobs, the survey showed.

On the president's signature issue of his first term, healthcare, 62 percent believe the healthcare system is on the wrong track. Obama led an overhaul in 2010 of the U.S. healthcare system that Republicans deeply opposed.

Interest in the political conventions is high. The poll found 82 percent of registered voters have seen, heard or read at least something about the Republican convention.

But this dropped to 73 percent among independents and 66 percent among non-aligned registered voters, those who are undecided about how to vote or who say they will not vote.

This suggests that the groups candidates most need to target are not yet engaging with the electoral process, Clark said.

The rolling poll measures sentiment during the two-week convention season by polling over the previous four days.

For the survey, a sample of 1,441 American registered voters was interviewed online. The precision of the Reuters/Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll has a credibility interval of plus or minus 2.9 percentage points for all respondents.

Democrat ejected for impersonating congressman

A delegate from California has been turfed out of the Democratic convention for allegedly lying to police and claiming to be a member of Congress after a late-night drunken incident.

The delegate reportedly returned to his hotel in Charlotte, North Carolina after partying hard on Saturday night with another man who had to be carried in and was placed unconscious on the floor of the lobby.

Paramedics were called, and when police showed up the delegate allegedly lied, saying he was a congressman to try to persuade police that the other man, who had had too much to drink, should be allowed to sleep it off in his hotel room.

Asked to show his credentials, the delegate's lie was exposed. The unconscious man was taken to hospital but later released. The delegate, who was not arrested, was asked on Sunday to end his participation in the convention.

"Oftentimes at conventions, people who have not seen each other for a long time gather and sometimes people have too much to drink," party spokesman Tenoch Flores told the Sacramento Bee.

Democratic delegates from across the United States are converging on Charlotte to formally nominate Barack Obama as the party's presidential candidate in November against Republican challenger Mitt Romney.
