Thomas: Americans still arguing over gov't limits

(AP) ? Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas says the same arguments the Founding Fathers fought over during the creation of the United States are still raging today.

The comments came Wednesday night at the National Archives in Washington, which is celebrating the 225th anniversary of the Constitution this month.

Thomas says America's founders argued over the limitations of the federal government's reach and power.

The justice says that debate, in his words, "is embedded in the formation of this country."

Thomas says that while the Constitution is not perfect, it belongs to all Americans and that he grew up believing that it was "perfectable."

The Supreme Court begins its new term on the first Monday of October.

Nintendo Wii U arrives in the US on Nov. 18 in two versions for $300 and $350, Europe on Nov. 30

Nintendo Wii U arrives in the US on Nov 18 in two versions for $300 and $350, Europe on Nov 30

The Nintendo Wii U will launch in the US on Sunday, November 18, Nintendo America president and CEO Reggie Fils-Aime revealed in a New York City press conference this morning. It'll arrive in Europe on November 30, though no price was given for our friends abroad. Like its Japanese release, the console comes in two varieties: a base level bundle in white with just 8GB of internal memory for $300 and a premium bundle in black with 32GB of internal memory for $350.

Each version contains the console itself, a WiiPad, a charging stand, a play stand, and a stand for the console. The premium version, however, adds a subscription to Nintendo's Premium Network, which offers various rewards for digital purchases -- it also gets a full 32GB of internal memory, which is a pretty major step up over the 8GB model. It's hard to imagine either having enough internal storage compared with current-gen consoles, but the Wii U's memory is expandable via USB.

Fils-Aime also said that Wii remotes are getting rebranded for the Wii U, and will be available in retail shops shortly. Check out the official PR and an additional shot of the basic set after the break.

HP Envy Spectre XT review: a sleek and speedy Ultrabook with a killer keyboard

DNP HP Envy Spectre XT a 13inch Ultrabook

HP's Envy 14 Spectre hit almost all the right notes when we reviewed it back in March, thanks to its high-res display, sleek metal-and-glass design and brisk performance, but a stiff trackpad and the steep $1,400 price were clear downsides. The new Envy Spectre XT, a 13.3-inch Ivy Bridge-powered Ultrabook, has a thinner, lighter profile than its big brother, and a lower $1,000 price tag to match. That's still not chump change, though, so does the XT deserve a spot in the top tier of Intel-approved ultraportables? Join us past the break for the full breakdown.

Ramiro Pozos Gonzalez, Mexico Drug Gang Leader, Reportedly Captured

  • Los Zetas

The Zetas are thought to have become the largest cartel in Mexico recently, operating in over half the country's states. <b>Leader:</b> The notoriously brutal gangster Miguel Angel Trevino Morales (alias "Z-40") is believed to be the new leader of the Zetas drug cartel following a showdown with Heriberto "El Lazca" Lazcano. Trevino is infamous for human "cookouts" in which he stuffs people in oil drums and lights them on fire. "If you get called to a meeting with him, you're not going to come out of that meeting," a U.S. official said of Trevino. <strong>Territory:</strong> The Zetas control a swath of territory on Mexico's east coast extending along the Gulf of Mexico. <strong>Rivals:</strong> The Zetas are bitter rivals with the Sinaloa Cartel. In turn, the group is allied with the Beltran Leyva Cartel and the Tijuana Cartel. <strong>Notable incidents:</strong> In August 2011, gunmen stormed the Casino Royale in Monterrey and lit it on fire, killing dozens. In February 2012, 30 prisoners linked to the Zetas broke free from Apodaca jail during a riot. 44 inmates from the rival Gulf Cartel were killed. In May 2012, the Zetas cartel allegedly was involved in dumping 49 decapitated bodies on a busy highway near Monterrey. <em>Photo: Army soldiers flank Daniel Ramirez, alias "El Loco," during his presentation to the media in Mexico City, Monday, May 21, 2012. • Sinaloa Cartel

Mexico's second major cartel reportedly operates in over a dozen countries, including trafficking cocaine and other drugs to the United States. <strong>Leader:</strong> Mexico's most-wanted drug lord, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, remains at large after he escaped from prison by hiding in a laundry truck in 2001. In 2012, Guzman appeared on <em>Forbes</em>' list of billionaires for the fourth year in a row. <strong>Territory:</strong> The Sinaloa Cartel operates in northwestern Mexico (map). <strong>Rivals:</strong> Arch-nemesis of Los Zetas, the Sinaloa cartel is allied with the Gulf cartel and the Familia Michoacana. <strong>Notable Incidents:</strong> A 755-foot smuggling tunnel running under a U.S. border fence was suspected to be operated by the Sinaloa cartel. The Sinaloa cartel may have been responsible for massacres in the border city of Nuevo Laredo in May 2012. The bodies of 23 people were found decapitated or hanging from a bridge, followed hours later by the discovery of 14 human heads in coolers near city hall. <em>Photo: In this June 10, 1993, file photo, Joaquin Guzman Loera, alias "El Chapo" Guzman, is shown to the press after his arrest at the high security prison of Almoloya de Juarez on the outskirts of Mexico City. • Gulf Cartel

One of the oldest cartels, the Gulf Cartel recently has lost influence, but is backed up by the Sinaloa cartel. <strong>Leader:</strong> Jorge Eduardo Costilla Sanchez, alias "El Coss." The U.S. has a $5 million bounty on his head. Costilla Sanchez once allegedly held FBI and DEA agents at gunpoint with AK-47s and threatened to kill them. <strong>Territory:</strong> The cartel operates out of the state of Tamaulipas, with other bases in Matamoros, Nuevo Laredo, and Reynosa, according to InsightCrime. <strong>Rivals:</strong> The Gulf Cartel is allied with Sinaloa and enemies of Los Zetas. <strong>Notable Incident:</strong> In June, footage purporting to show masked members of the Gulf Cartel beheading Zetas members surfaced online. <em>Photo: From left: Andrea Escamilla Juarez ("La Negra," 21), Rene Cortez Zapata ("El Nicanor," 45), Nestor Hugo Del Angel Ferretis ("El Tango," 29), Jose De Jesus Mosqueda Mora ("El Chucho," 41), Jorge Fernando Larios Nossiff ("El Camaron", 57), and Ricardo Abraham Velazquez Del Castillo ("El Ricardillo, 24), all alleged members of a cell belonging to the Gulf Cartel criminal organization, are shown to the press by federal police in Mexico City, Friday, Dec. 9, 2011. • Juarez Cartel

The Juarez Cartel reportedly smuggles tons of narcotics into the U.S., using local gangs to act as enforcers. <strong>Leader:</strong> Vicente Carrillo Fuentes, aka "The Viceroy," has a $5 million bounty on his head from the U.S. government. <strong>Territory:</strong> Based in Ciudad Juarez, across the border from El Paso, Texas. <strong>Notable incidents:</strong> In July 2011, Antonio Acosta Hernandez ("El Diego") told police he had ordered the killings of 1,500 people. In 2010, a report suggested that an associate group of the Juarez Cartel was training beautiful, young women as assassins. <strong>Rivals:</strong> Sinaloa cartel. <em>Photo: Jose Antonio Acosta Hernandez, 33, is presented to the media by federal police officers in Mexico City, Sunday July 31, 2011. According to federal officials, Acosta, nicknamed "El Diego," is a key drug cartel figure, who acknowledged ordering 1,500 killings. Authorities identified Acosta as head of La Linea, a gang of hit men and corrupt police officers who act as enforcers for the Juarez Cartel. (AP Photo/Marco Ugarte)</em>

  • Tijuana Cartel

The Tijuana Cartel, aka the Arellano Felix Organization, operates in the strategically important town of Tijuana, bordering San Diego, California. The cartel was depicted in the film 'Traffic' (2000). The cartel has been weakened by infighting. <strong>Leader:</strong> Fernando Sanchez Arellano, alias "El Ingeniero." (The "Engineer.") <strong>Territory:</strong> Baja California <strong>Notable Incident:</strong> The cartel allegedly dissolved bodies using chemicals or burned them in the desert to cover their tracks. <em>Photo: Seized drugs and packages of marijuana and crystal meth are displayed during a presentation to the press in Tijuana, Mexico, Wednesday, March 24, 2010. • Knights Templar

The Knights Templar are a bizarre, cult-like group. The Guardian writes: "Propaganda from the Knights Templar blends a mix of Michoacan regionalism, Christianity and revolutionary slogans." The Knights Templar are a major trafficker of methamphetamine. <strong>Leader:</strong> Servando G?mez Mart?nez, alias "La Tuta," denied in a filmed address that the Knights Templar are a cartel. G?mez Mart?nez is also called "El Profe" ("The Professor"), and InSight reports that G?mez Mart?nez was still a publicly-employed teacher as of 2010. <strong>Notable Incident:</strong> The group recently was blamed for coordinated firebombings of a PepsiCo subsiadary. It was a Mexican drug cartel's first attack on a transnational company. <strong>Rivals:</strong> Los Zetas. <em>Photo: Juan Gabriel Orozco Favela, alias "El Gasca," an alleged member of the Knights Templar drug cartel, is escorted by Mexican Army soldiers as he is presented to the media in Mexico City, Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2011. (AP Photo/Alexandre Meneghini)</em>

  • Beltran Leyva (Disbanded)

The Beltran Leyva largely disbanded following a power struggle after the death of its leader, Arturo Beltr?n Leyva. <strong>Leader:</strong> H?ctor Beltr?n Leyva, alias "El Ingeniero," or "El H," is wanted for up to $5 million in the U.S. He is the brother of former cartel leader Arturo Beltr?n Leyva. <strong>Territory:</strong> Northern Sinaloa. <strong>Rivals:</strong> Allied with Los Zetas after splitting from Sinaloa in 2008. <strong>Notable incident:</strong> Former cartel chief Arturo Beltr?n Leyva died in a shootout involving 200 Mexican marines in late 2009. <em>Photo: In this photo released by Mexico's Navy, Navy marines arrest alleged drug kingpin Sergio Villarreal Barragan, alias "El Grande," center, in Puebla, Mexico, Sunday Sept. 12, 2010. • La Familia Michoacana (Extinct)

La Familia Michoacana, a pseudo-religious gang, has been largely disbanded. <strong>Leader: </strong> Nazario Moreno Gonz?lez, alias "El M?s Loco" ("The Craziest One"), died in December 2010. <em>Photo: Martin Rosales Magana, aka "El Terry" and alleged leader of the Mexican La Familia drug cartel, is escorted by police officers during his presentation to the media in Mexico City, Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2011. Obama pulling away from Romney in polls but Mideast looms

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama is pulling away from rival Mitt Romney in polls in what might be a turning point in the U.S. presidential campaign, but volatility in the Middle East is allowing Republicans to cast the Democrat as weak on foreign policy and could threaten his momentum.

In the latest survey to show Obama ahead, a Reuters/Ipsos online poll on Thursday gave the Democrat a 7 percentage point lead, 48 percent to 41 percent, among likely voters.

Survey aggregator Real Clear Politics' average of national polls gives Obama a 3.3-point advantage while Gallup's seven-day tracking poll of registered voters has Obama leading by 6 points, one more than a Fox News survey of likely voters.

After months of a neck-and-neck race for the November 6 election, the recent data has stirred speculation that Obama may have reached a breakaway moment helped by the Democrats' convention in North Carolina last week when they laid out a case for his re-election.

"This election is far from over, and we're not inclined to make a final call until the first debate on October 3, but this seems clear: the election is slipping away from Romney," said Greg Valliere of Potomac Research Group which analyzes Washington for investors.

But in a reminder of how campaigns can shift easily, Republicans began building a strong argument against Obama for failing to stop the rise of Islamists in Egypt and Libya, where the U.S. ambassador was killed in an attack this week.

It is unclear whether Obama's lead in the polls is a residue of positive feeling from the convention, or due to more specific reasons like voter concern at the Republican ticket's plans for Medicare or Democratic ads attacking Romney's business record.

Poll leads at this stage in the race can evaporate quickly, as Republican Senator John McCain's did in the 2008 campaign.

But Obama seems to be doing something right to be able to stay ahead despite high unemployment, underscored by poor jobless figures last week. The Reuters/Ipsos poll showed Obama with a slight lead of 38 percent over 35 percent on which candidate has a better plan on jobs.

"You'd rather be in Obama's shoes today than Romney's," said Peter Brown, a pollster for Quinnipiac University.

In key states, the numbers looked grim for Romney this week too.

An EPIC-MRA poll showed Obama up 10 points in Michigan, Romney's birthplace and a state where conservative groups supporting him pulled back advertising dollars this week.

A poll released on Tuesday showed Obama up 4 points in Ohio, one of the top three battleground states.

    MIDDLE EAST CLOUDS GATHER

With the home front reasonably stable for him, Obama now has one eye on the Middle East as Republicans accuse him of weakness in the face of protests at U.S. diplomatic missions over a film many Muslims consider blasphemous.

The region has a history of upsetting U.S. presidential races as in 1980 when the Iran hostage crisis played a part in the defeat of Democratic President Jimmy Carter.

Although the current crisis is nowhere near as serious, demonstrators attacked the U.S. embassies in Yemen and Egypt on Thursday and American warships headed toward Libya after the U.S. ambassador there was killed in related violence.

Obama appeared to slip up by saying that Egypt, which receives $1.3 billion a year in military assistance from the United States, is not an ally.

"I don't think that we would consider them an ally, but we don't consider them an enemy," Obama told Spanish-language network Telemundo on Wednesday.

Former election opponent McCain appeared on a series of morning television shows to accuse Obama of lacking resolve.

"The fact is the United States in the Middle East is weak," the senator told MSNBC. "We are seen as withdrawing, and we are paying a price for that weakness, whether it be unraveling in Iraq, the tragedy in Syria, the tensions with Israel, the Afghan situation unraveling. There is a lack of leadership there."

Obama vowed that those responsible for killing the ambassador in Libya and three other Americans would be brought to justice.

"No act of violence shakes the resolve of the United States of America," Obama told an audience of 8,400 in Golden, Colorado.

Romney was accused earlier this week of being too hasty to criticize the president in the middle of a foreign crisis, as well as giving wrong information about the Obama administration's reaction to the storming of the embassy in Egypt.

He recalibrated his argument against Obama on Thursday, stopping short of repeating charges that Obama is apologizing to America's enemies.

"As we watch the world today, sometimes it seems that we're at the mercy of events, instead of shaping events, and a strong America is essential to shape events," he told supporters at a rally in Fairfax, a Washington suburb.

Although foreign policy dominated headlines this week, the Federal Reserve's decision to launch another aggressive stimulus program on Thursday presented a further opportunity for Romney to return the presidential campaign to economic issues, long considered the former private equity executive's strong suit.
