India slowly confronts epidemic of missing children

?It was living hell these past two years, trying to figure out where we could find him,? said his father, Iqbal Ali. ?I used to run a biscuit bakery, but from the day he disappeared, I got so caught up trying to meet politicians, police and people who claim to do magic to get children back, that I had to shut down my bakery. I had no time for it.?

More than 90,000 children are officially reported missing every year, according to data compiled and released late last year by leading children?s rights group Bachpan Bachao Andolan, which showed the problem was far greater than previously thought.

Up to 10 times that number are trafficked, according to the group ? boys and girls, most from poor families, torn from their parents, sometimes in return for cash, and forced to beg or work in farms, factories and homes, or sold for sex and marriage.

It is an epidemic that, until a few years ago, remained unreported and largely ignored by the authorities.

But years of tireless work by activists, a few crucial victories in court ? and the shocking discovery of the bones of 17 slain girls and young women around a businessman?s home in a suburb of New Delhi called Nithari in 2006 ? have gradually put the issue on the nation?s agenda.

India?s 24-hour news channels have also played a role in highlighting an issue long tolerated by the country?s middle classes. The media frenzy surrounding the Nithari killings was a watershed, reminiscent of the way the disappearance of Etan Patz in Manhattan in 1979 helped spark the missing-children?s movement in the United States.

In recent weeks, footage from surveillance cameras ? a new phenomenon in modern India ? has also been repeatedly broadcast on television here, showing infants being brazenly snatched from train stations and hospital lobbies as parents slept nearby.

?A couple of decades ago, there was no understanding of the issue of missing children or trafficking for forced labor ? child labor was not even considered a crime,? said Bhuwan Ribhu, an activist for the children?s rights group. ?Though things are slowly changing, the biggest issue is the lack of political and administrative will to enforce the law, which is often outside the reach of the common person.?

Irfan suffered perhaps the most common fate ? kidnapped to satisfy India?s insatiable demand for cheap, agricultural labor.

In India and many other developing countries, children often work in agriculture. What is only now becoming apparent is the huge trafficking industry that has grown up outside the law.

Irfan?s story, though, has a happy ending. Last month, after more than two years away, he finally made it home to his joyous parents, after climbing on a chair in the shed where he was held and breaking a window with an earthen vase to escape.

?I was supposed to bathe the buffalo, to feed them, to pick up the dung,? he said, describing his life imprisoned in virtual solitary confinement in a room adjoining a buffalo shed outside the town of Mullanpur, some 200 miles northwest of Delhi.

Sergio Franchi concert thrived despite tornado warnings

View and purchase photos--> [component:byline] -->

STONINGTON ? The 18th annual Sergio Franchi Memorial concert survived thunderstorm and even tornado warnings Sept 8 and though it started more than an hour and a half early, triggered repeated ovations from a crowd of about 3,600, only a little smaller than the norm.

Even though Eva Franchi?s mother Anyu had passed away just seven days before the concert, Franchi hosted the event as usual and dedicated it not only to the memory of her late husband, Sergio ? who inspired her to hold the concerts 18 years ago -- but to Anyu as well.

The concerts have raised more than $1 million in scholarships awarded to talented tenors and sopranos since its inception, but shortly before 1 p.m. Franchi announced that though this year?s version was scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. it would start in 30 minutes to beat the impending storm.

It did.

But 16 talented singers, introduced with the usual flair by Franchi, did not let the bad weather warnings and early start affect their performances. Simply put, they sang their hearts out.

Franchi introduced Soprano Latonia Moore, who sang at her concert last year and was a cover (understudy) for the lead singer in ?Aida? at the Metropolitan Opera in NY last March., by saying:

?Thank God the lead got sick to Latonia got her chance.?

Moore drew raves from The NY Times and other reviewers for her unexpected performance and Saturday, sang ?Ritgorna Vincito? from ?Aida? with the same power and vocal artistry she did at the Met.

Though the program listings were changed because of the approaching storm, Moore came back to sing ?Un bel di? from ?Madam Butterfly to loud applause and was followed by Australian singer Alfio, who repeated his triumph of last year by singing ?Il Mondo? and then brought the house down with a moving ? guitar-backed rendition of ?Mamma? which he dedicated to all mothers everywhere and especially to Anyu.

Jesus Garcia belted out a powerful, big-voiced version of ?Granada, Jon Dominick brought bravos with a deeply moving rendition of ?Old Man River? and Stevin LaBrie lit up the stage with ?Some Enchanted Evening.? Continued...

Giada Valenti sang her signature number, ?La Vie en Rose, which she has performed all over the world with passion and intensity and later returned to sing ?Smile.?

Laurence Broderick was in top form with ?This is My Beloved? and so were Eric Margiore with ?E Lucefan le stele? from ?Tosca? and Corinne Winters and Margiore with a romantic and chemically alive duet performance of ?O soave fanciulla? from ?La Boh?me.?

Filippo Voltaggio with his ?It?s Not Unusual? excited the crowd and so did Jacqueline Ballarin with her unusual presentation of ?Don?t You Know? which she then segued into ?Quando me ?en vo? from ?La Boh?me,? -- the melody on which it was based. She then ended her performance, her voice soaring, with the final bars of ?Don?t You Know? to loud applause.

The three and half hour concert, broken only by a 15 minute intermission, climaxed with long and sustained high notes from the ?Sergio Franchi Young Tenors? including spectacular performances of ?O Sole Mio.?

They drew repeated standing ovations and Franchi clearly moved by her singers and the crowd that showed up in force despite the dire weather forecasts, thanked them from coming and said her 250-acre estate would continue to be the site of what she called the Connecticut version of the Met ? though tickets cost just $30.

slideshow GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) ? Jeff Driskel accounted for two touchdowns, helping No. 14 Florida beat Kentucky 38-0 Saturday and extend its winning streak to 26 in the series.

The Gators (4-0, 3-0 Southeastern Conference) also recorded their first shutout in conference play since a 52-0 victory against Mississippi State in 2001.

Florida struggled early in the game, not a great sign with No. 2 LSU up next in two weeks. The slow start also was a rarity against the Wildcats (1-3, 0-1). The Gators had outscored Kentucky 94-3 in the first quarter in the last four meetings, sealing games before some fans settled into their seats.

It took a little longer Saturday.

The Gators scored three times in the second quarter, enough to put Kentucky away and extend the nation's longest winning streak in a current series between two teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

The Wildcats played without quarterback Maxwell Smith. He sat out with a shoulder injury. Backup Morgan Newton missed open receivers early and often, giving Kentucky little chance at an upset.

Explosive situation at Trump planned golf course in Bx.

High levels of explosive methane gas have been discovered next to Bronx homes that abut a dump the city is turning into a golf course for Donald Trump, a Daily News investigation has found.

As construction of the $97 million links has accelerated this year, methane in quantities the state considers potentially volatile has been repeatedly detected in test wells just yards away from homes.

Residents of this working-class neighborhood had no idea ? and weren?t too pleased.

?That concerns me. What are we breathing?? asked Stephanie Machuca, whose Balcolm Ave. condo sits about 25 feet from a green-capped well that registered excessive amounts of methane in May.

The Trump golf course is now under construction on top of a dump that was closed in 1963. The decomposing garbage that?s still underground creates methane, a highly volatile gas that?s been percolating under Ferry Point for years.

CONTRACTING COMPANY TIED TO BRIBERY SCANDAL WON MULTIMILLION-DOLLAR JOB TO BUILD DONALD TRUMP GOLF COURSE IN BRONX

Concerns that this methane could migrate into adjacent basements surfaced in 2000 when a proposal to turn the trash heap into a golf course first emerged.

In response, the city installed wells on the site and around the edges of the course next to the neighborhood to measure the amount and track the location of the gas.

Inspectors have since regularly checked the wells to make sure the methane doesn?t surpass what?s called a lower explosive level (LEL). They report the results to the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

?As a matter of practice of safety, if you have a basement that was 100% LEL and you turned on a light, you risk having an explosion,? said Ken Bresner, a DEC official tracking Ferry Point?s methane.

Occasionally the test results showed higher levels of methane. But in recent months, the tests have regularly detected concentrations at the project?s edge far in excess of the LEL, records show.

The state is aware of this rash of high methane levels. In response, it has decided not to shut down construction but to increase the frequency of monitoring. ?We?re concerned about movement of landfill gas.

This has been an ongoing concern,? Bresner said.

It?s not clear exactly why this is happening, but Bresner noted the recent construction at the site ?could potentially disrupt gas under the surface.?

In the last few months, construction of the links ? which will be run by Trump on a 20-year lease ? accelerated dramatically, with tons of soil dumped on top to shape the contours of the 18-hole course.

(Reuters) - Cancer drugmaker Astex Pharmaceuticals Inc said it would discontinue the development of its experimental small-cell lung cancer drug, Amuvatinib, as the drug failed to achieve a high enough response rate in patients in a mid-stage study. Shares of the company were down about 10 percent at $3 in premarket trade. They closed at $3.32 on Thursday on the Nasdaq. The main goal of the trial, known as ESCAPE, was to show that the drug had a response rate of not less than 10 percent in treating lung cancer patients. Amuvatinib fell short with a 9.5 percent response rate. ...

Dawn Spacecraft Finds Signs of Water On Vesta

Would you prefer they say they found DHMO?

I mean, for public release, saying "water" makes more sense.

And anyway, water consumption for human use would be minimal, if it all. That water, unless it is deep underground, has been bombarded by cosmic rays for eons, it may be too radioactive in the form of Tritium to be safe.

Most likely, it will be used as fuel/reaction mass or as shielding from Cosmic Rays..

(AP) ? Kevin Costner, Amy Poehler, Bryan Cranston, Zooey Deschanel, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and other Emmy-nominated actors celebrated their success at a series of parties around Tinseltown.

Most began their evening at the Emmy Performers nominee reception Friday at the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles. That's where nominees received certificates acknowledging their acting achievements.

The nominated actors posed for a class photo, with many proudly holding their certificates above their heads.

"This is like graduation," said Elizabeth Moss, nominated for her work on "Mad Men."

"You get to meet so many people you might not get to see at the Emmys," beamed the newly blonde actress.

Also among the guests: Martha Plimpton, Loretta Devine, Mare Winningham, Julia Ormond and Eric Stonestreet. Cranston, Louis-Dreyfus and "Modern Family" star Ty Burrell hopped over to the Women In Film party in Beverly Hills after noshing on kale salad, roasted chicken and grilled skirt streak at the official Emmy reception.

The Emmy Awards will be presented Sunday at the Nokia Theatre and broadcast live on ABC.
