DIY? No Can Do: More Companies Turn to Software for Help with PPC

By Elisa Gabbert September 24, 2012 Posted In: Marketing Strategy Comments: 4 ">Tweet -->

There was a time when being a PPC manager necessarily entailed being an Excel ninja as well. Not a fan of spreadsheets? Then step away from the PPC account, my friend!

In 2001, however, a tipping point occurred ? the majority of companies no longer managed their PPC accounts using Excel. And the trend continues in that direction. According to SEMPO?s recent State of Search report, the number of companies who manage their PPC campaigns DIY-style using free tools like those provided by search engines, Excel, or ?a simple database? fell from nearly half (49%) in 2001 to just 38% in 2012. That?s a big drop! And a much bigger drop than the change from 2010 to 2011 (53% to 49%).

Here?s the survey data from SEMPO (the exact question was ?Do you or your primary search engine marketing service provider use a special technology solution with features such as ?bid management?, ?campaign management?, ?portfolio management? and ?dynamic optimization? for paid search campaigns??):

SEMPO State of Search

As you can see, there?s been a big rise in the number of companies that use a proprietary in-house solution (17% this year compared to just 4% last year) as well as those that license a third-party tool to use in-house, up to 22% in 2012 from 12% in 2011. A full 62% (almost 2 in 3) of companies now use some kind of software to help them manage PPC, whether it's a proprietary or third-party solution and whether they manage it in-house or use an SEM service provider.

Why Are More Businesses Investing in PPC Software?

The SEMPO report doesn?t delve into why this shift is happening, but here are some possible explanations for the shift:

  • AdWords is getting more complicated ? AdWords is constantly launching new features (such as Shared Budgets) or changing the way existing features work (take the ad rotation setting changes from a few months back). Some advertisers may feel they can?t keep up and are falling behind.
  • People are advertising on multiple platforms ? Almost all companies using PPC advertising (97% of them!) run campaigns on Google AdWords, but more than half use Bing/Yahoo (65%) ?and Facebook advertising (56%) as well.
  • The PPC software industry is coming into its own ? Search marketing is still a young industry. The available solutions are improving by leaps and bounds, and advertisers are beginning to realize that it?s a smart investment that delivers ROI ? and/or PPC vendors are getting better at convincing advertisers that software is worth the investment! There are also more and better solutions targeting small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), as opposed to just enterprise-level big spenders.
  • Marketing departments are increasingly feeling the pinch ? With the economy still not fully recovered, it may be that fewer marketers are being held responsible for a larger number of roles. If, for example, a single search marketer is handling both SEO and PPC, they may need advanced tools that offer automation to get more done in less time.

Have You Made the Switch to a Paid Solution?

Are you one of those companies that has made the switch to a third-party or proprietary in-house solution for PPC management? Or are you still working your magic with AdWords Editor and Excel?

Trampolines no place for kids, docs warn

Trampolines are too dangerous for children to use, the American Academy of Pediatrics warned Monday. There were nearly 100,000 trampoline injuries in 2009 -- and safety nets don't offer much protection, doctors say.

Fall Atlanta Home Show Wows Attendees - Atlanta Real Estate Forum

Atlanta new homes and more benefit at Fall Atlanta Home ShowThis past weekend, attendees of? the Fall Atlanta Home Show were wowed. Last weekend?s event is just one of two annual shows at the Cobb Galleria Centre that give local and national home d?cor and improvement experts a chance to strut their stuff for builders, remodelers and homeowners. This year?s show was headlined by HGTV?s Vern Yip, John Gidding and Tonya M. Williams, and it stuffed the Cobb Galleria Center?s exhibit hall with booths, demonstrations and more to benefit Atlanta real estate.

While everything home-related was present, from mortgage banks to emergency shelter manufacturers, it seemed the largest number of exhibitors were outdoor home improvement companies. There were many displays showing off everything from deck materials to elaborate outdoor scenery designs like waterways, outdoor kitchens and fully-featured patios. While such luxuries had fallen out of style with the weaker economy, their booming presence on the show floor was a strong showing of a healthier market.

In addition, trends toward environmentally-friendly building continued to be popular at this year?s show. Additional green options were available all over the show. These included solar energy additions, energy-saving operations, improved insulation systems and recycled products from countertops to insulation. Environmental building and retrofit?s popularity is still on the rise.

If you missed the show, you can look forward to seeing the best in home improvement and design next year, with the Spring and Fall Home Shows at the Cobb Galleria Centre and the North Atlanta Home Show at the Gwinnett Center. Pakistan disowns bounty on anti-Islam filmmaker - The Seattle Times

Originally published September 24, 2012 at 4:49 AM | Page modified September 24, 2012 at 9:33 AM

ISLAMABAD ?

The Pakistani government on Monday distanced itself from an offer by one of its Cabinet ministers to pay $100,000 to anyone who kills the maker of an anti-Islam film that has sparked violent protests across the Muslim world.

The film, "Innocence of Muslims," has enraged many Muslims for its portrayal of the Prophet Muhammad as a fraud, a womanizer and a child molester. At least 51 people, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya, have been killed in violence linked to protests over the film, which also has renewed debate over freedom of expression in the U.S. and in Europe.

Adding to the anger in the Muslim world was a decision by a French satirical magazine to publish lewd pictures of the prophet last week, prompting French authorities to order the temporary closure of around 20 overseas missions out of fear they'd be targeted by demonstrators.

Some of the most intense and sustained protests have come in Pakistan, where the role of Islam in society is sacrosanct and anti-American sentiment runs high. But even in that atmosphere, the bounty offered by Railways Minister Ghulam Ahmad Bilour has drawn criticism.

Bilour said Saturday that he would pay $100,000 out of his own pocket to anyone who kills the man behind the inflammatory film, Nakoula Basseley Nakoula. The filmmaker was forced into hiding after the 14-minute movie trailer rose to prominence.

Bilour also appealed to al-Qaida and Taliban militants to help eliminate the filmmaker.

Pakistan's Foreign Office said in a statement Monday that the bounty on the filmmaker's head reflected Bilour's personal view and was not official government policy.

The minister belongs to the secular Awami National Party, an ally in the government of President Asif Ali Zardari. His comments struck a nerve within his own party, which is considered anti-Taliban and has lost several leaders in the fight against the insurgency.

A party spokesman, Haji Adeel, said the statement was Bilour's personal view, and that the party had sought an explanation from him.

"We are a secular party," he said. "We consider al-Qaida and Taliban as our enemy."

Pakistan's government declared last Friday a national holiday - "Day of Love for the Prophet" - and called on people to take to the streets to protest the film peacefully. But the demonstrations turned violent, and at least 21 people were killed.

In Iran, the head of the government-controlled cinema agency said his country should boycott the 2013 Oscars and not field a candidate for the foreign film category in protest against the anti-Islam video. The agency, headed by Javad Shamaghdari, oversees the committee that makes the selection.

He was quoted by the semi-official Mehr news agency as saying Iran should "avoid" the Hollywood festival.

The committee has already picked "Ye Habbeh Ghand," or "A Cube of Sugar" - a film about a family wedding turning into a funeral when the groom's relative dies - as Iran's entry as best foreign film. But the government must endorse the selection for it to become official.

Shamaghdari has in the past been known for his calls to "deprive" Western film festivals of movies made by Iran's cinema industry.

Iranian director Asghar Farhadi in February won the Oscar for best foreign film for his movie, "A Separation" - the first such prize for Iran.

Nearly two weeks after demonstrations began with protesters scaling the walls of the U.S. Embassy in Egypt, the film continued to draw people out into the streets in protest.

In Sri Lanka, about 5,000 protesters marched through the nation's capital demanding the U.S. ban the film and punish its creators. The demonstrators blocked traffic as they marched on a main road in Colombo, carrying signs and banners that read "Punishment for those involved" and "Our hearts are wounded and chests full of anger."

Protest organizer Kamil Hussain urged the U.S. to ban "Innocence of Muslims" and remove it from YouTube, saying "insulting a religious leader is not freedom of speech."

A small protest also took place in northern Nigeria, where hundreds of Muslims marched peacefully through the streets of the city of Kaduna. Demonstrators scrawled graffiti on walls reading: "Death to the Americans, Death to the Israelites."

Demonstrations in Nigeria, a nation largely split between a Christian south and a Muslim north, have been peaceful, though one protest was broken up by soldiers firing into the air.

In Lebanon, a military prosecutor indicted 45 people related to attacks on policemen and a KFC restaurant during protests against the film, judicial authorities said.

On Sept. 14, security forces opened fire in the northern city of Tripoli, killing one person and wounding 25 after a crowd attacked the KFC and a Hardee's restaurant.

Prosecutor Saqr Saqr charged the 45 on accusations including attacking policemen, damaging security vehicles and burning a restaurant, the officials said. They spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations. Since one person was killed in the incident, some of the accused could get life in prison, if convicted.

In Sweden, an appeals court acquitted three men accused of plotting to murder a Swedish artist who had depicted the Prophet Muhammad as a dog. Upholding a lower court's ruling, the appeals court in Goteborg said Monday there was no conclusive evidence that the three men of Iraqi and Somali origin had planned to kill Lars Vilks in September last year.

The men were carrying knives when they were arrested after inquiring about Vilks at an art exhibition where he had been expected to appear but did not do so. Vilks lives under police protection after his 2007 drawing led to death threats from militant Islamists.

Gautam Gambhir is a genuine match-winner, says MS Dhoni ? Cricket

Gautam Gambhir is a genuine match-winner, says MS Dhoni ? Cricket News Update

Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the Indian captain, is extremely happy to see Gautam Gambhir finding his lost form during the ICC World T20 2012 and believes that the left-handed opener is a genuine match-winner.

After a superb One Day International (ODI) series in Sri Lanka, scoring a hundred and a couple of half-centuries, the cricketer from Delhi struggled to deliver the goods during the Test series against New Zealand at home, which resulted in a lot of criticism.

However, the stylish opener answered his critics in style by smashing a 38-ball 45 against England on Sunday, which included five boundaries. The left-hander helped India post a very competitive total of 170 runs on the board for the loss of four wickets, which turned out to be more than enough for the Poms, who were dismissed for just 80.

Gambhir finding his form before the Super 8 stage is crucial in Dhoni?s opinion, who believes that the opener possesses the ability to make a serious impact on a match.

"I am very happy for Gautam as he had planned his innings beautifully. He is someone who has had to struggle a lot to play for India. He is quite an aggressive character. He is a match-winner for us," the Indian captain expressed.

Rohit Sharma is another batsman who has not enjoyed a successful year in international cricket but is ranked as one of the world?s most naturally gifted players. Despite being criticized by many former cricketers, the skipper persisted with Sharma and promoted him up the batting order on Sunday.

The right-hander did not disappoint, scoring a fantastic 55 off just 33 balls, in which he struck five fours and a massive six over the cover boundary.

Dhoni expressed that Rohit was asked to bat at number four because the situation demanded some quick runs.

"We got a good start and the platform was ideal to send Rohit up the order. If the situation demands and we have a 70-75 runs added in the first 10 overs, you might see him again going up the order," he stated.

India have successfully qualified for the Super 8 stage, where they are likely to face Australia, South Africa and Pakistan.?

Cancer Researchers Accidentally Discover New Nylon Process

They were trying to treat brain cancer. But, in a happy accident, a group of brain cancer researchers at Duke University invented a better and perhaps greener way to make nylon, as described in Nature Chemical Biology.

A brief history lesson: In the 1930s, American chemical companies scrambled to develop synthetic fibers to replace the natural ones shipped from Asia and South America (which they couldn?t get anymore because of a trade dispute). DuPont first produced nylon as a replacement for silk in 1935; after it appeared on the market as the bristles of a toothbrush and in women?s stockings, a Fortune magazine article called nylon the miracle fiber, "an entirely new arrangement of matter under the sun."

The problem with the miracle fiber is that it?s made from adipic acid, which itself is made from petroleum. And the acid?s production creates a byproduct of nitrous oxide, which contributes to global warming. Five million gallons of adipic acid are produced every week from fossil fuels.

Theoretically, scientists could make the acid from simple sugars with a series of enzymes, thereby avoiding petroleum. Most of the enzymes used in chains like this are produced in large quantities by yeasts or bacteria, small easily cultured organisms that grow and multiply quickly. But the enzyme for one step in the chain, 2-hydroxyadipic dehydrogenase, is found in the cytoplasm of human cells but has never been produced in the lab.

That?s where cancer research comes in. Four years ago, researchers at Duke discovered a genetic mutation in a common cancerous brain tumor that changed the form of another enzyme, isocitrate dehydrogenase. They applied this mutation to an enzyme in yeast and out came the elusive 2-hydroxyadipic dehydrogenase?the missing link in the nylon chain.

This process is a long way from actual production. But if it were made in this new way, the nylon as we know it in carpets, car parts, and parachutes would look just the same because it would be the same?its key ingredient would come from sugar instead of fossil fuels.

China cancels events marking ties with Japan

Tokyo, Sep 23 (IANS/RIA Novosti) China has cancelled events planned to celebrate 40 years of diplomatic relations with Japan amid an escalating territorial dispute between the two countries, the Japanese media reported Sunday.

The ceremony to mark the 40th anniversary of the normalisation of China-Japan relations was scheduled for Sep 27.

But the Chinese side has already informed Japan's authorities of its cancellation, reported Jiji Press, referring to a source close to the event's organisers.

The relations between the two countries have recently plummeted to their worst level in years over a chain of islands claimed by both countries.
